EDITORIAL
Brazilian Journal of Mother and Child Health: ten years
The commemoration of the 10th year of the publication of a scientific periodical may not be an especially portentous event, but it is certainly worthy of some comment, when the periodical in question is produced in an underprivileged region of a developing country. Furthermore, the Journal has grown considerably in this period, now receiving 300 manuscripts a year, compared to 27 in its first year of publication, in 2001. Eighty percent of articles submitted are now rejected, which is a sign of great progress. The Journal also receives articles from all over Brazil and from overseas. Some of these international articles have not been accepted for reason of flawed methodology or lack of scientific merit, while others are of excellent quality and worthy of publication. Articles falling into the latter category have included:

Researchers from various backgrounds have expressed great interest in the Journal and, in 2007, various articles were published in the editorial forum's Global Theme Issue on Poverty and Human Development, edited by the Council of Science Editors and funded by the Fogarty International Center and the National Library of Medicine. These articles are in the Vol. 7 (4): 457-93.
During this fruitful period, we have received positive evaluations from other organizations and the Journal is indexed in eleven databases, including Sociological Abstracts, CABI's Full-Text Repository and the Scientific Electronic Library On Line (SciELO) and Scopus. In the case of SciELO, which covers more than 50 Brazilian periodicals and more than 100 in Latin America as a whole, the Journal now ranks among the ten most highly regarded in the area of health and medicine.
None of this would have been possible without the full support of our sponsor, the Instituto de Medicina Integral Prof. Fernando Figueira (IMIP) (formerly known as the Instituto Materno Infantil de Pernambuco) and the tireless efforts of our team of editors, reviewers, technical staff and consultants. Needless to say financial support from organizations such as the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq), the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES), and the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology has been indispensable.
Finally, we should not neglect to mention the crucial historical importance of our predecessor, Revista do IMIP, which, for 14 years (1986 -2000) was published regularly by the institution, despite the enormous difficulty of doing so. This was a noteworthy experience.
For all these reasons, we believe that congratulations are in order. We shall continue to make every effort to grow in quality and to consolidate our position as a major Latin American scientific periodical with an international presence.
