Jornal Vascular Brasileiro - ten years

Marcio Meirelles

Former President of the Brazilian Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery (SBACV) - São Paulo (SP), Brazil.

In the middle of the road there was a stone,

there was a stone in the middle of the road.

Carlos Drummond de Andrade

As we learned soon enough, there were many stones in the middle of our road, of different sizes and shapes. Ones were difficult to overcome; others were more "delicate". There were political, economic and scientific stones; at last, stones for anyone's liking (and some disliking).

This is how the Jornal Vascular Brasileiro started. But fortunately, some stones were in our favor. The "inventor", creator and first editor of our journal, for instance, was a "stone" - hard, but precious: Prof. Telmo Pedro Bonamigo. Therefore, humbly following the footsteps of a 2,000-year old story of success, the journal of the Brazilian Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery (SBACV) was also to be built on... a stone.

It was not an easy decision to found a journal that would depend completely on our Society. People would say it would be unprofitable, there would be no sponsors, no regularity etc.

Two decisions were promptly made. The journal could not rely on advertisement; SBACV would be in charge of financing the journal, ensuring its periodicity, with the certainty that it would take off due to its quality and that sponsoring companies would be willing to cooperate. The other decision was that its title and presentation would make it very clear: it was a Brazilian journal; nevertheless, it would be destined to overcome boundaries "from Brazil to the World", as we pretentiously liked to say. JVB was not created to only be "another journal", small and limited. It was part of the project to fight for its full indexation.

Other stones appeared in our way. One was the federal Agency for Scientific Research decision detrimental to academic publication in national journals; another was the impossibility of the first Editor to continue his brilliant work, due to professional obligations.

In both situations, the vigor and versatility of our Society membership prevailed. Professor Winston Bonetti Yoshida took over the position of Editor-in-Chief, and, with persistence, skills and unwavering dedication,, moved on without discontinuing the project.

The Journal is about to complete ten years of existence. Indexation in Medline and in the Information Sciences Institute (ISI) - the next goals - depend on a moderate increase in the production of original articles. We are close to this goal, and we are sure that we can reach it with extra effort.

Therefore, we do have one more stone in the road. And this one we shall also overcome.

Congratulations to SBACV and to the Jornal Vascular Brasileiro. Let's move forward together, towards full indexation.
