We are now releasing the October 2012 issue of IBRACON Structures and Materials Journal (Volume 5, Number 5). Seven articles on relevant topics of concrete materials and structures are being published. The issue starts with a comparative analysis on the static modulus of elasticity tests of plain concrete cylindrical specimens. The second article discusses models for combined shear and torsion, aiming at the evaluation of the required transverse reinforcement, according to the Brazilian Standard Code ABNT NBR 6118:2007.  The next article presents the development of an innovative strengthening method for RC beams, based on a high performance cement-based composite of steel fibers (macro + microfibers), applied in a transition layer intended to better control the cracking of concrete and to avoid the premature detachment of the strengthening. The fourth article draws on the fatigue structural safety assessment of a reinforced concrete bridge in the Carajás Railroad. Relevant aspects related to punching strength of reinforced concrete flat slabs without shear reinforcement are discussed in the fifth article, with experimental results organized in a database with 74 slabs with results according to recommendations of ACI 318, EUROCODE 2 and NBR 6118 and also through the Critical Shear Crack Theory, incorporated in the new Fib Model Code. The sixth article presents the analysis of the mechanical and durable properties of recycled aggregate concrete, using construction and demolition wastes. The issue closes with an article presenting experimental results of a research program with ceramic block masonry under compression.
