Over the last two years, the Revista Brasileira de Parasitologia Veterinária (RBPV) has been investing in publication quality and, hence, in greater visibility for the studies published. It has not been an easy task, but certain steps have been important, given that through starting to publish all articles in English, and going online with free access, the RBPV has started to compete with other Brazilian and international journals in fields related to this journal. After all, researchers want to publish their studies in journals that have an impact. In other words, the ISI impact factor today has great importance as a quality assessment system for journals and consequently for the studies published in them. The RBPV's impact factor is still low, but on a rising trend. The number of citations in the database of more than 6,000 scientific journals over a two-year period is divided by the number of articles published by the journal over the same period. Within this context, journals that also publish review articles ought to increase their classification, since they use the impact factor as a measurement. Nonetheless, much good sense needs to be used in the process of classifying the quality of studies submitted for publication. It is worth reflecting: should every study published in a high-impact journal also be considered to have a high impact? The results from many studies published in medium-impact journals are cited more than others in high-impact journals. In reality, the direct correlation between a high-impact study and high quality under certain different criteria may be illusory. We believe that the RBPV must continue to make increasing efforts to appraise texts more rigorously and publish studies that truly bring out results that are important for research within the field of Veterinary Parasitology. We also hope, in the near future, to have other criteria for assessing the impact of a study. The RBPV is endeavoring to achieve the quality factor in its studies, but always with the idea of fair assessment for all studies submitted, taking into consideration the importance and application of the results, the experimental design, the reliability of the data presented, non-repetition of results already published in other papers and respect for animal wellbeing and for nature. Ultimately, the RBPV's greater objective is to increasingly seek to value researchers within the scientific community, in response to the trust that researchers have already placed on the journal, as a medium for serious publication and release of data.
