Partial salpingectomy is an effective form of contraception in pregnant  and non-pregnant queens



Researchers from Universidade Rural de Pernambuco (UFRPE), Pernambuco, Brazil, demonstrated that partial salpingectomy is an effective and of fast implementation contraception method in queens, even in situations of pregnancy, common in castration campaigns. The study was published in Ciência Rural journal, v.42, n.3, of March 2012.

The study compared the method of partial salpingectomy used in human medicine particularly with the method of ovariohysterectomy (OSH). For this, 40 cats were divided in two groups of 20 animals. In group 1, the researchers performed partial salpingectomy, while in group 2, they performed the technique OSH. There were 10 pregnant and 10 non-pregnant cats in the first group. The animals were evaluated by researchers with seven, 60, 180 and 365 days.

According to the results, the time between the two surgical procedures was significantly different, being OSH the longest. The pregnant cats submitted to partial salpingectomy had normal pregnancy and delivery. Animals in the first group cycled, mated and did not get pregnant. The researchers also measured the increase in weight of animals submitted to the procedures and identified that the ones submitted to OSH had significant weight gain.

The importance of this research is to show a new surgical alternative contraceptive in cats, even before the situation common in pregnancy campaigns castration. According to researcher Amanda Camilo Silva, besides being an effective contraceptive technique, the technique avoids the abortion and harmful effects to the conceptus are minimal.
