Research uses PCR technique to detect Brucella canis in dog population

 

 

Researchers from Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso, Brazil, demonstrated that PCR is an efficient technique for detection of Brucella canis in dogs, a disease that has a prevalence of 24.1% of analyzed cases. The research was published in Ciência Rural journal, v.42, n.6, June 2012.

The aim of the study was to investigate the occurrence of brucellosis caused by Brucella canis in dogs in Cuiabá, State do Mato Grosso, Brazil, and possible risk factors associated during the period of 2007 to 2008. For this, study was analyzed 375 samples based on simple random sampling, covering the four districts of the municipality.

Results indicate the prevalence of 24.1% of B.canis in this municipality. The disease showed association with clinical signals of keratitis and conjunctivitis and could be detected by PCR technique.

According to the researcher Valeria Dutra, the results can be used to speed up the diagnosis of canine brucellosis and can serve to implement disease control programs in the state of Mato Grosso. "The diagnostic technique used is more rapid, sensitive and specific than the conventional one, and the data will serve as a warning to control an important zoonosis in this state and in Brazil", se says.

The innovation of the research is on hold in on canine population of a determined region, which had not been done in other studies. Also, the use of a molecular tool and  not only serology and  demonstrates clearly that PCR technique is efficient in this type of diagnosis.
