Case report shows outbreaks of incoordination in cattle after vaccination against foot and mouth disease (FMD)

Researchers from Universidade Federal de Campina Grande, Paraíba, and of Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, Pernambuco, Brazil, reported cases of incoordenation in cattle after vaccination agains foot and mouth disease (FMD) in these states. The study was published in Ciência Rural journal, v.42, n.10, of October 2012.

The signs of incoordination were observed by researchers in about 45 days after vaccination, performed intramuscularly in the thoracic and lumbar regions. A total of 24 animals were affected, with six in the state of Paraiba and 18 in the state of Pernambuco. Six animals were killed and four were euthanized. In animals euthanized there was abscedative  myositis with the presence of irregular multifocal yellowish areas to coalescing white and milky liquid in the region of Longissimus lumborum left in two animals and yellowish firm mass compressing the spinal cord of two animals. The cases were related to the misapplication of the vaccine.

According to researcher Ana Luisa Alves Marques, the dissemination of the results of this research avoids the incorrect application of vaccines to be used in other states. "The misapplication of medications and vaccines may cause harm to the physical integrity of the animals, as well as economic losses to producers," she points out.

The innovation of this study is to report the damage caused by improper use of the vaccine against foot and mouth disease, mandatory in almost all Brazilian territory. "There are similar report in Mato Grosso do Sul state, but to the northeast it is something unpublished that needs to be publicized so that such situations do not repeat," says Ana Luisa.
