Commercial ELISA kit is an alternative for the diagnosis of fasciolosis in bovine livers
Researchers from Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo and of Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, compared diagnostic testes and demonstrated that commercial ELISA kit is a viable alternative for the diagnosis of fasciolosis in bovine livers. The study was published in Ciência Rural, v.42, n.11, of November 2012.
Researchers collected stool and evaluated macroscopically 81 cattle livers, 45 of which had their livers condemned for liver fluke. Two fractions of each stool sample collected were separated and one of them was stored in a freezer for later completion of the ELISA. The other fraction was processed according to a sedimentation technique for diagnosis of fecal Fasciola hepatica eggs.
The ELISA kit proved to be more sensitive compared to fecal test, as it had a sensitivity of 75.6% compared to 51.% of the other test. The results obtained by the commercial ELISA kit did not differ from those obtained at slaughterhouse, but fecal test differed from slaughterhouse in detecting positive animals.
According to researcher Isabella Martins, the study demonstrates that the commercial ELISA kit is an alternative for the diagnosis of fasciolosis in bovine livers beyond fecal test, already traditionally used.
