    Cerqueira, N. L.

In studying the material collected by the Bolivian Yellow Fever Service between 1933 and 1942, five new species of mosquitoes were encountered (Rhynchoataenia) nitens [female], Psorophora (Janthinosoma) circumflava [female], Psorophora (Janthinosoma) melanota [male], Psorophora (Grabhamia) dimidiata [male] and [female], and Aedes (Howardina) aurivittatus [female]. In addition, new evidence bearing on certain species of Haemagogus has been presented and discussed. On the basis of this evidence, the validity of H. capricornii is confirmed, while H. spegazzinii Brethes, formerly considered synonymous with H. equinus Theob., is revalidated. H. janthinomys Dyar. futhermore, is shown to be synonymous with it. Illustrations are presented for the first time of the male genitalia of H. capricornii and H. uriartei, and also of a new aspect of the female genitalia of Haemagogus, taking as a character the frequency of the number of setae of the ninth tergite, comparative figures for which are given. Finally, notes are presented on the geographical distribution of the theree species of Haemagogus considered.
  • Lista dos mosquitos da Bolívia: (Diptera, Culicidae)

    Cerqueira, N. L.

One hundred and twenty-six species of mosquitoes, corresponding fifteen genera, have been found in material collected by the Bolivian Yellow Fever Service between 1933 and 1942. This number is three times that given for the country in existing literature and would be even largar if it were possible to identify a consierable group of Culex mosquitoes composed principally of female specimens. All species studied come from Departmetns and Provinces where cases of yellow fever have been found. Consideration has been given to certain species which do not agree exactly with existing descriptions, and supplementary descriptions have been made for the male or female of two additional species for which only description of the opposite sex had existed.

The formula of a new medium for mounting insects on slides is presented, having as base colophonium and copal dissolved in a mixture of alcohol, camphor, essence of turpentine and eucalyptol. The modification of this solvent by the addition of glacial acetic acid for purposes of preliminary fixation is also described. The new medium has the same permanence as those which it is designed to replace, and its cost is much less. Its characteristics and advantages follow. It gives an acid reaction. Being non-aqueous, it does not foster the growth of molds. It dries sufficiently slowly to permit dissection to be made. It clears specimens not previously treated with potassium hydroxide within 24 to 48 hours, thus making early study possible. The medium does not retract. Its refraction index at 26ºC is 1.467. Mounted material can be dismounted without heating. And finally, it offers no interference to staining when the stain employed are of acid reaction, and can be used in histological preparations.

The A., after an intorductory history of his experience in leprosy, discusses the more convinient routine method of classification of leprosy cases, basing it in the facte that every case is mixt, i. e. when the skin shows any lesion the nerves of that region are also affected by the bacilli. Studying by a new thecnics, which he baptised before as "Lleras' method", the scarching of the agent of leprosy in tuberculoid cases, by examination of sub-corium lymph obtained from the lesion, he discovered new forms of the Hansen bacillus, which describes briefly, arriving at the following conclusions: 1. The A., after discussing about the evolution and clinical classification of leprosy, describes new forms of the HANSIN bacillus, discoverd in the lymph extracted from subcutis of leprosy lesion. 2. In 100 % of tuberculoid cases (total studied 29) the A. found, in the subcutis lymph, bacilli, granules, clubs or other forms of HANSEN bacillus. 3. Such bacteriological findigs and the proved mutation of tuberculoid leprosy into lepromatous type, demolished the basis of the so-called "polar" classification of leprosy. 4. Considering the proved facts already referred to, the A. arrived at the conclusion that 50 % of all papers published about tuberculoid leprosy, within the last ten years, are fanciful. 5. The presence, in the subcutis of lepers, of metamorphosic forms of HANSEN bacillus, is the cause of common relapses of negativated cases by treatment, which fact suggests a new therapeutics method to destroy such elements in loco, and exiges more strict examination before release of interned patients.
  • Gastrite espontânea do camondongo e cogumelos do gênero Geotrichum Link

Torres, C. Magarinos; Leão, A. E. Arêa; Salles, Jônio F.

    Resumo em Inglês:

Slight acute catarrhal gastritis associated with fungi of the genus Geotrichum LINK was found to occur in apparently healthy white mice. This is of practical importance considering that the mouse is extensively employed in experimental work on nutrition.
  • Lactacidemia: métodos de dosagem do ácido lático

    Mello, Maria Isabel

    Resumo em Inglês:

A critical study of three methods for the determination of lactic acid (EDWARDS, MENDEL & GOLDSCHEIDER, MILLER & MUNTZ) is presented and some modifications are proposed. It was shown t hat more accurate results could be obtained with Edward's technic when an Iena glass filter is connected with the absorption tube. Before the dropping of the permanganate solution it is necessary to pass a current of air through the reaction flask to avoid the oxidation of the non-lactic acid substances which interfere with the reaction. The absorption tube must be maintained at 18°C during the destillation and the titration of the bisulphite binding aldehyde at 4°C. When the sample contains more than 5 mg it is useful to work with greater quantities of the bisulphite. More permanganate is consumed when the lactic acid concentration is higher. The sensivity of the method permits the titration of 0.04 mg to 5 mg of lactic acid in the sample. The calculated error of the method gave 0.018 % and the normal values for blood determined in 20 human cases averaged 10.30 mg per 100 ml (Table VI). MENDEL and GOLDSCHEIDER'S method was modified in the following details: Somogyis deproteinization was performed instead metaphosphoric acid as in the original method; to avoid the evaporation of the acetic aldehyde during the heating time with sulfuric acid a special glass stopped tube is proposed (Fig. 2). The reaction with sulfuric acid and veratrol is performed in an ice bath. Blood proteins precipitants were tried and Somogyi's lattest tecnic showed better results (Table V). Colorimetric readings were done in the PULFRICH photometer using filter S 53 and a 10 mm cup. The method is accurate within an error of 0.23 % and samples of 5 to 70 microg. could be easily determined. Normal values for human blood averaged 10.78 mg per 100 ml. More accurate results were obtained with the technic of MILLER & MUNTZ. Slight modifications were introduced: deproteinization with copper sulfate and sodium tungstate; satured p-hydroxydiphenyl solution according to KOENEMANN which is stable for 5 months when stored in the ice-box. Using the PULFRICH step-photometer the error is 0.17% with samples varying from 0.1 to 10 microg. of lactic acid. The filter employed was S 57 with the 5 mm cup. The method was adapted to 0.1 ml of blood. Normal values for human blood gave an average of 10.58 mg per 100 ml.
