The binuclear [Fe(CNBu t)(CO)4(HgSO4 )] adduct was obtained in the reaction of HgSO4 with [Fe(CNBu t)(CO)4] in methanol. This adduct, without a similar in the homoleptic pentacarbonyliron, was characterized by analytical and spectroscopic data. Further Mössbauer and molar conductivity studies have confirmed it's adduct nature.Resumo em Inglês:
Chlorinated polymers (PVC, PVDC and E-CTFE) were irradiated with white light produced at the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Source (LNLS). The emitted gases were analyzed by mass spectrometry. The spectra were dominated by peaks related to hydrochloric acid, HCl, and chlorine (35Cl). The measured HCl intensity is used to evaluate the sensitivity of the polymers over a broad energy range. PVDC showed the greatest light sensitivity as compared to PVC and E-CTFE.Resumo em Inglês:
Agricultural wastes from cactus Cereus peruvianus and Opuntia ficus indica were investigated for protein production by solid substrate fermentation. Firstly, the polyelectrolytes were extracted and used in water cleaning as auxiliary of flocculation and coagulation. The remaining fibrous material and peels were used as substrate for fermentation with Aspergillus niger. Glucoamylase and cellulase were the main enzymes produced. Amino acids were determined by HPLC and protein by Lowry's method. After 120 hours of fermentation the protein increased by 12.8%. Aspartic acid (1.27%), threonine (0.97%), glutamic acid (0.88%), valine (0.70%), serine (0.68%), arginine (0.82%), and phenylalanine (0.51%) were the principal amino acids produced.Resumo em Inglês:
The photofragmentation of a core-excited halogenated compound, Halotane (C2F3HClBr), generally used as anesthetic by inhalation, has been studied using high energy photons and electrons near C 1s ionization edge (~ 300 eV), using time-of-flight mass spectrometry in multicoincidence mode. We observe strong differences between the molecular fragmentation induced by photons and electron impact.Resumo em Inglês:
A simple and inexpensive time-of-flight mass spectrometer, dedicated to the study of gas-phase ionization processes induced by high energy electrons (0.5 - 3.0 keV), is described. The spectrometer design is based on the Wiley-McLaren principle, with a total length of about 18 cm. As a demonstration of the performance of the apparatus, mass spectra for Ar, CH4, CO2, and SF6, obtained at 1 keV electron energy, are presented.Resumo em Inglês:
In the last decade, many method has been developed to obtain oxysufides. However, theses materials were obtained by reaction involved gaseous toxics, CO, CS2, H2S and S. In the present work, the synthesis of lanthanum oxysufides actived by europium (III) through an alternative method has been made. This method involve the rare earth sulfate reduction under an atmosphere of argon contained 10% hydrogen using the thermogravimetric technique. The results showed the formation of the phase TR2O2S (TR = La and Eu) at temperatures which depend upon the heating rate, respectively 650 - 830ºC at 5ºC min-1 and 680 - 800ºC at 10ºC min-1. The oxysufides obtained are characterized by infrared spectroscopy. The method developed is more economic than the usual industrial methods and the environmental problems during the synthesis are also better controled.Resumo em Inglês:
It was evaluated the applicability of Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin models to copper adsorption in three classes of soils. Fractions of each soil were added to test tubes containing growing concentrations of the metal in solution. The tubes were shaken and the copper concentrations were determined in the extracts by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). The models offered a good fit for the experimental data indicating that presence of silicated clay had high influence on copper sorption. The Langmuir isotherm showed high influence of the organic matter in the absorption phenomenon. It was evidenced the importance of further studies related to Temkin model.Resumo em Inglês:
The equilibria, the spectra and the identities of the species of Cr(VI) that are present in aqueous solution have long been an active subject of discussion in the literature. In this paper, three different chemometric methodologies are applied to sets of UV/Visible spectra of aqueous Cr(VI) solutions, in order to solve a chemical system where there is no available information concerning the composition of the samples nor spectral information about the pure species. Imbrie Q-mode factor analysis, followed by varimax rotation and Imbrie oblique projection, were used to estimate the composition of Cr(VI) equilibrium solutions and, by combining these results with the k-matrix method, to obtain the pure spectra of the species. Evolving factor analysis and self modeling curve resolution were used to confirm the number of the species and the resolution of the system, respectively. Sets of 3.3×10-4 and 3.3×10-5 mol L-1 Cr(VI) solutions, respectively, were analyzed in the pH range from 1 to 12. Two factors were identified, which were related to the chromate ion (CrO4(2-)) and bichromate ion (HCrO4-). The pK of the equilibrium was estimated as 5.8.Resumo em Inglês:
The aquatic humic substances (AHS) investigated in this study were conventionally isolated from Rio Negro waters - Amazonas State/Brazil by means of the collector XAD 8. A special five-stage tangential-flow ultrafiltration device was used for analytical fractionation of AHS. The fractionation patterns (6 fractions each) showed that metal traces remaining in AHS after their XAD 8 isolation have different size distributions. For instance, the major percentage of traces of Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb (determined using ICP-AES) was preferably complexed by molecules with relatively high molecular size (30-100 kDa) and the following complexation order was characterized: F2 >> F1 = F4 = F5 > F3 > F6. Moreover, the species formed between AHS and metals prepared by spiking, showed distribution patterns changing as a function of the complexation time (ageing process), indicating a slow transformation process and an inner rearrangements in the binding sites within the AHS molecules.Resumo em Inglês:
Fuller's earth and acid activated smectitic clays are largely used as bleaching earth for the industrial processing of vegetable, animal and mineral oils and waxes. The paper comments about the nomenclature used for these materials, the nature of the acid activation of smectitic clays (bentonites), activation laboratory procedures and presents a review of the acid activation of bentonites from 20 deposits from several regions of Brazil. The activated clays were tested and show good decolorizing power for soybean, castor, cottonseed, corn and sunflower oils.Resumo em Inglês:

Calculation of uncertainty of results represents the new paradigm in the area of the quality of measurements in laboratories. The guidance on the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement of the ISO / International Organization for Standardization assumes that the analyst is being asked to give a parameter that characterizes the range of the values that could reasonably be associated with the result of the measurement. In practice, the uncertainty of the analytical result may arise from many possible sources: sampling, sample preparation, matrix effects, equipments, standards and reference materials, among others. This paper suggests a procedure for calculation of uncertainties components of an analytical result due to sample preparation (uncertainty of weights and volumetric equipment) and instrument analytical signal (calibration uncertainty). A numerical example is carefully explained based on measurements obtained for cadmium determination by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Results obtained for components of total uncertainty showed that the main contribution to the analytical result was the calibration procedure.Resumo em Inglês:
Aromatic nitration is one of the most relevant class of reactions in organic chemistry. It has been intensively studied by both experimental, including works in the condensed as well as in the gas phase, and theoretical procedures. However, the published results do not seem to converge to an unique mechanism. Electrophilic substitution and electron transfer, in an exclusive way, are both proposed as the main mechanism for the reaction. We review these proposals and discuss the most recent findings.Resumo em Inglês:
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a class of 209 chemical compounds with the molecular formula C12H10-nCl n, where 1 <= n <= 10. They were commercially produced as complex mixtures for various uses, being employed principally as dielectric fluids in capacitors and transformers. They are not easily degraded due their chemical and physical stability and tend to bioaccumulate in the organisms. After the discovery of their xenobiotic activity, restrictions were imposed for their use, as well as for their discards. Nowadays the development of recovery processes for contaminated environment urges to be done due to the extension of reached areas.Resumo em Inglês:
A low cost spectrophotometric cell for use in flow analysis was manufactured in acrylic and adapted to a commercial spectrophotometer. The application of this cell was performed in the determination of chromium (VI) in steel samples using the reaction with the alkaloid brucine in presence of oxalic acid and 0.6 mol L-1 sulfuric acid. A flow cell assembled on the original geometry of a graphite tube to achieve permanent chemical modifier is proposed. The graphite tube operates as the working electrode. A stainless steel tube, positioned downstream from the working electrode, was used as the auxiliary electrode. The potential value applied on the graphite electrode was measured against a micro reference electrode (Ag/AgCl) inserted into the auxiliary electrode. Palladium solutions in acetate buffer (100 mmol L-1, pH = 4.8), flowing at 0.5 mL min-1 for 60 min was used to perform the electrochemical modification. A mercury solution (1 ng) was used to evaluate the performance of the permanent palladium modifier.Resumo em Inglês:
Crude extract of Tibouchina granulosa, Rhododendron simsii and Phaseolus vulgaris L. were prepared and used as alternative indicators in quantitative analysis teaching in standardization of NaOH solutions and in the determination of acetic acid contents in vinegar. Effect of using such natural extracts as indicators was very attractive to the students and the quantitative results were compared with conventional indicators with good agreement. Concepts of data statistics can successfully be discussed using the interest revived by the use of natural indicators.Resumo em Inglês:
