Complexes with the composition Ln(NO3)3.2DTPO.4H2O (Ln = Nd and Er) were synthesized and characterized by infrared and visible absorption spectra (solid state and solution). The results of the absorption spectra in the solid state suggest that metal-ligand bonds are essentially electrostatic in all complexes. The absorption spectra of the nitrate salt solution presented smaller values of the oscillator strength when compared to the spectra of the complexes in the same solvent.Resumo em Inglês:
The NMR conformational study of 4',7-di-hydroxy-8-prenylflavan 1 was carried out in acetone-d6, DMSO-d6 and CDCl3 which enabled the proposition of three conformations, namely 1a, 1b and 1c, differing in the position of the prenyl group. Geometry optimizations performed using AM1 method showed that 1a (deltaHf = -86.2 kcal/mol) is as stable as 1b (deltaHf = -85.1 kcal/mol) and 1c (deltaHf = -85.4 kcal/mol). When the solvent was included, the calculations showed that the solute-solvent interactions could be explained either in the light of the electronic intermolecular delocalization or the electrostatic character between solute and solvent. Theoretical calculations (HF/6-31G*, deltaFT/BLYP/6-31G*, and deltaFT/B3LYP/6-31G*) showed that the combination of these types of interactions present in each solute-solvent system, dependent on the chemical properties of the solvent, lead to different spatial arrangements of the prenyl group, which in turn determined the conformation of 1.Resumo em Inglês:
Heavy-metal concentration in sediment is an important parameter for identifying pollution sources and assessing pollution levels in aquatic ecosystems. In this context, the present study aimed at determining concentrations of heavy metals in sediments from the Vitória estuarine system, Brazil. Twenty nine stations were surveyed to assess the spatial distribution of heavy metals. The metals for silt-clay fractions (<63 µm) were analyzed through atomic absorption spectrometry. A discriminant analysis segregated the stations in four groups representing four areas within the estuarine system. The Espírito Santo Bay showed the lowest metal concentrations, while the Vitória harbor canal showed the highest. We concluded that concentrations of heavy metals reflect natural conditions and the contribution of human activities from sewage and industrial effluents. It was not possible to directly associate metal concentrations to specific pollution sources.Resumo em Inglês:
Electroflotation (EF) with aluminum electrodes was applied in the treatment of Brazilian industrial coconut wastewater. The results show that EF with polarity inversion is a very good treatment when compared to others. The removal of pollutants in the wastewater after EF with polarity inversion was 96.3% of oils and grease, 99% of color and 66% of total organic carbon. Also, metal concentrations, turbidity and total solids were reduced.Resumo em Inglês:
In this work, composites formed from a mixture of V2O5 and polyaniline (PANI) were investigated, for applications as cathode materials for secondary lithium batteries. Electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) data show that charge compensation in the [PANI]0.3V2O5 nanocomposite is achieved predominantly by Li+ migration. However, the charge compensation in the [PANI]V2O5 microcomposite occurs by Li+ and ClO4- transport. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) measurements reveal several benefits of nanohybrid formation, including the achievement of shorter ionic diffusion pathways, the higher diffusion rate of the lithium ion and also the higher electronic conductivity, which are responsible for a synergetic effect of the energy storage properties.Resumo em Inglês:
Composting of sawdust and paper mill sludge, using a "Kneer" process reactor, was studied in an attempt to elaborate upon organic matter (OM) transformation during the process and to define parameters to measure the compost maturity level. Temperature, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) data, ash and C, H, N and S contents, and a spectroscopic method using ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) for alkaline (pH = 8.5) and solid samples was used to study the maturity of the compost samples. These parameters were measured in 6 humic acids (HA) extracted from the compost samples during 29 days. The results of this work show that the "Kneer" process is efficient in transforming ligno-celulitic residues in a short time (29 days), into an organic fertilizer material with application perspectives.Resumo em Inglês:
This paper describes total lipid content, unsaponifiable fraction and the acid, refractive, saponification and iodine indices of the oil of Sterculia striata nuts. The fatty acids, the sterols and the triterpene alcohols were determined. The percentage of cyclopropenoid fatty acids (CPFA), determined by NMR ¹H (15,5%), makes the nuts of this species unsuitable for human consumption.Resumo em Inglês:
The violence derived from crimes involving firearms represents one of the main concerns of society. For this reason modern techniques have emerged in forensic science to identify suspects at crime scenes. This work describes a methodology to identify residues present in the hands of suspect by using a high resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and collection procedure based on ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) solution as a complexing agent in moistened swabs. In order to distinguish real gunshot residues from others types of residues present in the hand of suspect, ternary ratio per cent diagrams were developed for antimony (Sb), barium (Ba) and lead (Pb) detected on the hands of volunteers, before and immediately after shooting tests, revealing a remarkable difference in both situations.Resumo em Inglês:
The volatile constituents obtained from a static cryogenic headspace of Caesalpinia echinata Lam. (Leguminosae) showed E-beta-ocimene as the major compound (57.2%), beside other monoterpenes, C6 derivatives like n-hexanal and (E)-2-hexenal and nitrogen compounds such as indole and methyl anthranilate. From the essential oil of the leaves obtained by hydrodistillation in a Clevenger apparatus, (E)-3-hexen-1-ol was identified as the major constituent while phenolic compounds were the most representative class of secondary metabolites.Resumo em Inglês:
Procion Green HE-4BD is a reactive dye currently used in affinity purification, and commonly present as a contaminant in the final biological preparation. An assay method is described to determine trace amounts of the dye in the presence of human serum albumin(HSA) and leakage from agarose as affinity sorbent by cathodic stripping voltammetry. The proposed method is based on the reductive peak at -0.55V in B-R buffer pH 3 (E=0V and t= 240s), obtained when samples of HSA 2% (m/v) containing dye concentrations in sodium hydroxide pH 12 are submitted to a heating time of 330 min at 80 ºC. Linear calibration curves can be obtained for RG19 dye concentrations from 5x10-9 mol L-1 to 8 x10-8 mol L-1. The detection limit (3sigma) is 1x10-9 mol L-1.Resumo em Inglês:
The use of pheromones in integrated pest management has been increasing in the last years due to environmental concern. This development is accompanied by the search for simple, efficient and less aggressive synthetic methodologies for the preparation of pheromones. One of these methodologies includes microbiological reactions, more specifically biocatalytic reduction of carbonyl compounds using baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). This review presents the use of baker's yeast as an easy and cheap alternative to obtain enantiomerically enriched compounds employed in the synthesis of pheromones.Resumo em Inglês:
Contaminant gases in the atmosphere constitute an important problem to be solved in the world. The NOx gases produced as a consequence of engine high temperatures are deleterious to environment and human health, as they promote acid rain and can act in the same way as freons in the destruction of the ozone layer in the stratosphere. In this review, three way and selective reduction catalysts for decomposition of these contaminant gases are described. Details about conditions and problems, such as catalyst poisoning, and the search for new catalysts are shown.Resumo em Inglês:
After decades of polluting actions the environment manifests serious and global consequences. The contamination of soils and groundwater by organic compounds is a widespread problem mainly on account of contamination by leakage from underground storage tanks, which often results in the release of gasoline or other chemicals. The main problem about groundwater contamination is due to the toxicity of water-soluble components such as benzene, toluene and xylene (BTX). In the present work a study about classical and modern methods for remediation of BTX is reported.Resumo em Inglês:

This article shows that thiosemicarbazones, semicarbazones and their metal complexes can exhibit target selectivity along with a wide pharmacological profile. Complexes of thiosemicarbazones with cytotoxic or antitumoral activity are presented, some of which show activity against cisplatinum-resistant cells. The inhibition mechanism of the enzyme ribonucleoside diphosphate reductase (RDR), involved in DNA syntheses, by alpha(N)-heterocyclic thiosemicarbazones is discussed. The encouraging results of clinical trials with the RDR inhibitor 3-aminopyridine-2-carboxaldehyde thiosemicarbazone ("Triapine") against rapidly growing tumors are outlined. Examples are also given of thiosemicarbazones with antiviral and antimicrobial activity. The possible applications of semicarbazones as anticonvulsants with low toxicity and good therapeutic index are presented.Resumo em Inglês:
The exhaust emissions of vehicles greatly contribute to environmental pollution. Diesel engines are extremely fuel-efficient. However, the exhaust compounds emitted by diesel engines are both a health hazard and a nuisance to the public. This paper gives an overview of the emission control of particulates from diesel exhaust compounds. The worldwide emission standards are summarized. Possible devices for reducing diesel pollutants are discussed. It is clear that after-treatment devices are necessary. Catalytic converters that collect particulates from diesel exhaust and promote the catalytic burn-off are examined. Finally, recent trends in diesel particulate emission control by novel catalysts are presented.Resumo em Inglês:
In this work we present a theoretical model to investigate the scattering of Xe and Ne by a liquid squalane surface. The liquid surface is modeled as a grid of harmonic oscillators with frequencies adjusted to experimental vibration as frequencies of the liquid squalane and the atom-surface interaction potential is modeled by a Lennard-Jones function. The three dimensional description of the dynamics of the process which occurs at the gas-liquid interface is obtained by the classical trajectory method. The general characteristics of the dynamics of the scattering process are in good agreement with experimental data.Resumo em Inglês:
Chemicals binding to membrane receptors may induce events within the cell changing its behavior. Since these events are simultaneous and hard to be understood by students, we developed a computational model to dynamically and visually explore the cAMP signaling system to facilitate its understanding. The animation is shown in parts, from the hormone-receptor binding to the cellular response. There are some questions to be answered after using the model. The software was field-tested and an evaluation questionnaire (concerning usability, animations, models, and the software as an educational tool) was answered by the students, showing the software to be a valuable aid for content comprehension.Resumo em Inglês:
The discussion based on surfactant cleaning action is commonly used in chemistry classrooms for the comprehension of theoretical concepts related to surface tension and micelle formation. The experimental quantification of surface tension of aqueous solutions of surfactants provides the practical instruments for this discussion. The present paper describes a simplification on the common apparatus employed for the drop-weight method, making the determination of surface tension accessible to any chemistry lab. The surface tension of various liquids and the critical micelle concentration, CMC, of three commercial surfactants were measured with this modified method, and proved to be consistent with literature values.Resumo em Inglês:

Normally, the determination of equilibrium constants (k d) in batch experiments uses a high solution to soil ratio, which does not represent field conditions. In this study we present an alternative method to evaluate adsorption constants, using micro-columns of soil at higher soil to solution ratios. The centrifugation force and equilibration time were investigated. The triadimenol distribution along the column profile is controlled by diffusion and equilibration times greater than 24 h are needed to achieve reproducibility. The centrifugation force must be superior to 670 g in order to guarantee enough extraction of the liquid solution from the soil columns.Resumo em Inglês:
European Directive (98/83/CE), compulsory after 2008, states that bromate in drinking water must be controlled at levels below 10 mg L-1. Supporting implementation of the Directive, the European Comission has established project SMT4-CT96 2134, in collaboration with various european institutions, aiming at the identification of the interferents to the current analytical method (Ionic Chromatography with Conductimetric Detection - IC/CD), their removal and the automation of pre-treatment and injection steps, as well as the development of alternative methods. EPAL, responsible for the water supply to a great deal of Portuguese regions, has taken steps to meet these requirements. Although not part of such project, this work (the result of a project conducted under a protocol of collaboration between EPAL SA and FCUL - Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon), reports on studies of usefulness to laboratories planning to monitor bromate in ozone treated waters, in conditions different from those described in EPA 300.1. Simultaneous determination of bromide is justified by its role as bromate precursor.Resumo em Inglês:
The Brazilian effort on R&D of products from the national biodiversity dates back to the 70's. The Central de Medicamentos - CEME - was tailored to add scientific and technological competence to the production of pharmaceutical drugs derived from the Brazilian biodiversity by means of the Research Programme on Medicinal Plants - PPPM. Although previous to the Convention on Biological Diversity - CBD - and to the current debate and the ever-growing interest on phytomedicines, CEME has historical importance in the present governmental efforts on fostering the R&D on phytomedicines. This article makes a historical redemption of the PPPM, the actions and the results in the course of its existence.Resumo em Inglês:
The classical interpretations of Nicolas Léonard Sadi Carnot on some physical principles involved in the operation of heat engines were fundamental to the development and formulation of the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Moreover, an accurate historical survey clearly reveals that Carnot was, by that time, also well aware about some new concepts, which were further worked out by other scientists to lead to what was, some time later, known as the mechanical equivalent of heat and the conservation of energy. Benoit Paul Émile Clapeyron recognized these original concepts in the first of Carnot´s monographs, published in 1824, but no explicit citation is found in any post-Carnot classical texts dealing with the First Law of Thermodynamics, including those by Julius Robert Mayer, James Prescott Joule and Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand von Helmholtz. The main objective of the present work is to point out some historical evidences of the pioneering contribution of Carnot to the modern concept of the First Law of Thermodynamics.
