  • Estudo das dispersões aquosas de nanotubos de carbono utilizando diferentes surfactantes Artigo

Silva, Isabella R. da; Barreto, Pedro L. M.; Bellettini, Ismael C.

    Resumo em Inglês:

The dispersion of carbon nanotubes in water for their utilization in nanoscale devices is a challenging task. Comparative studies on interaction and dispersion of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNT) using two different surfactants (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS, and polyoxyethylenesorbitanmonooleate, Tween 80) are presented. The interaction between carbon nanotubes and surfactants was studied by tensiometry, conductivimetry, and fluorimetry. The dispersions of MWNT in surfactants were characterized using a UV-vis spectrophotometer. For effective dispersion, the minimum weight ratio of MWNT to surfactant was 1:41 and 1:3 for SDS and Tween 80, respectively.

In this work, the fatty acid quantity and composition of six freshwater microalgae and soybean grains was determined by direct transesterification and gas chromatography analysis. The results showed that all the freshwater microalgae species presented a higher quantity of fatty acid than soybean grain. Choricystis sp. (A) provides 115% more fatty acids per gram of biomass than soybean grain. With regard to the fatty acid composition, Choricystis sp. (A) showed an adequate proportion of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, with lower quantity of polyunsaturated fatty acids and, akin to some marine microalgae, constitutes an alternative raw material for biodiesel production.
  • Nitrous oxide emissions from an intermittent aeration activated sludge system of an urban wastewater treatment plant

Mello, William Z. de; Ribeiro, Renato P.; Brotto, Ariane C.; Kligerman, Débora C.; Piccoli, Andrezza de S.; Oliveira, Jaime L. M.

    Resumo em Inglês:

This study investigated the emission of N2O during the sequential aerated (60-min) and non-aerated (30-min) stages of an intermittent aeration cycle in an activated sludge wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). N2O emission occurred during both stages; however, emission was much higher during aeration. Air stripping is the major factor controlling transfer of N2O from the sewage to the atmosphere. The N2O emissions exclusively from the aeration tank represented 0.10% of the influent total nitrogen load and the per capita emission factor was almost 3 times higher than that suggested by the IPCC for inventories of N2O emission from WWTPs.

Barata, Carolina; Carballo, Jorgelina; Cruz, António João; Coroado, João; Araújo, Maria Eduarda; Mendonça, Maria Helena

    Resumo em Inglês:

Making use of several analytical techniques, four erudite and four popular Portuguese baroque wooden sculptures were studied. The materials and techniques employed were identified and the relationship between their artistic quality and the materials used was investigated. In general, the pigments were common at the time, but one pigment discovered in the beginning of the 18th century and two rare arsenic pigments were also identified. In popular sculptures cost-saving was detected, particularly concerning the gold leaf. Regarding some technical procedures identified, recommendations found in historical documents did not seem to have been entirely followed, neither in erudite nor in popular sculptures.

Emission factors of natural processes and anthropogenic activities were used to estimate nutrients and metal loads for the lower Macaé river basin, which hosts the operational base for the offshore oil and gas exploration in the Campos Basin. The estimates indicated that emissions from anthropogenic activities are higher than natural emissions. Major contributing drivers include husbandry and urbanization, whose effluents receive no treatment. The increasing offshore oil exploration along the Brazilian littoral has resulted in rapid urbanization and, therefore might increase the inshore emission of anthropogenic chemicals in cases where effective residue control measures are not implemented in fluvial basins of the region.

Superabsorbent hydrogels based on poly (acrylamide-co-acrylate) and different kaolins, were prepared by free-radical aqueous copolymerization. FTIR and WAXS techniques were employed for characterization of a series of hydrogels, obtained by varying the percentage of clay, crosslinking and constitution of kaolin. The water absorbency at equilibrium (Weq) decreased with increasing clay content and the amount of crosslinking agent. Superabsorbent hydrogel (Weq > 1084 g H2O/g gel) was obtained as 10 wt% of white kaolin and 0.05 mol% of crosslinking agent were used. The hydrogel proved sensitive to pH variation and the presence of salts.

Santana, Rodolfo de Melo Magalhães; Korn, Mauro; Santos, Josué Carinhanha Caldas

    Resumo em Inglês:

A multi-commuted flow system was developed to determine propylthiouracil (PTU) based on the reaction of its thiol form with iminoquinone radical generated by the oxidation of N,N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine in an alkaline medium. PTU can be found in tautomeric forms and the tautomeric equilibrium was displaced to enhance the thiol form. However, the reaction product is unstable and its residence time in the flow path was carefully investigated. The proposed procedure showed good precision (< 1.5%) and a limit of detection (3s) of 0.11 mg L-1. High recoveries were obtained in the validation test. The procedure was employed for propylthiouracil determination in medications.

Gerola, Adriana Passarella; Estevão, Bianca Martins; Caetano, Wilker; Hioka, Noboru; Tessaro, André Luiz

    Resumo em Inglês:

The self-aggregation of pheophytin, a possible photosensitizer for Photodynamic Therapy, is solved by formulation in polymeric surfactant as P-123. The photosensitizer incorporation was found to be time dependent, exhibiting two steps: a partition at the micellar interface followed by an incorporation into the micelle core. The photodynamic efficiency of the formulation was tested by the bioassays against Artemia salina. In order to evaluate how the experimental parameters: pheophytin concentration, P-123 percentage and illumination time influenced the death of artemia, the factorial design 2³ was chosen. The illumination time was found to be the main factor contributing to the mortality of artemia.
  • Hydrogels of cellulose acetate crosslinked with pyromellitic dianhydride: part I: synthesis and swelling kinetics

Oliveira, Víctor A.; Veloso, Tácia C.; Leão, Versiane A.; Santos, Cláudio G. dos; Botaro, Vagner R.

    Resumo em Inglês:

This work describes the synthesis of hydrogels of cellulose acetate (AC) crosslinked with 1,2,4,5-benzenotetracarboxylic dianhydride (PMDA). The crosslinking reaction was monitored by FTIR. Analysis of aromatic fragments from the alkaline hydrolysis of the gels by UV spectroscopy indicated that an increase in the stoichiometric ratio of dianhydride resulted in higher degrees of crosslinking. The non-porous nature of the gels was confirmed by analysis of nitrogen adsorption. Water absorption isotherms showed that as the temperature and degree of crosslinking increased, the percentage of water absorbed at equilibrium (%Seq) also increased. The hydrogels presented second order swelling kinetics.

  • Revisão dos tratamentos químicos da fibra natural para mistura com poliolefinas Revisão

Albinante, Sandra Regina; Pacheco, Élen Beatriz Acordi Vasques; Visconte, Leila Lea Yuan

    Resumo em Inglês:

The use of natural fibers as reinforcement in polymer composites has been a focus of interest. However, these composites exhibit lower mechanical properties than those of pure polymers because of the low interfacial interactions between the hydrophobic polymer matrix and the hydrophilic fiber. To overcome this problem, different chemical treatments applied to the fibers have been reported. One of the most used treatments is mercerization, which can improve adhesion between the fiber and polymeric matrix. Another chemical treatment involves the use of acids (stearic and oleic acids). The chemically treated fibers used in composite materials showed improved mechanical properties.

Nepomucena, Tania Miranda; Silva, Augusto Maciel da; Cirillo, Marcelo Angelo

    Resumo em Inglês:

Mixture Models can be used in experimental situations involving areas related to food science and chemistry. Some problems of a statistical nature can be found, such as effects of multicollinearity that result in uncertainty in the optimization of a dependent variable. This study proposes the application of the ridge model adapted for mixture planning considering the Kronecker (K-model) and Scheffe (S-Model) methods applied to response surfaces. The method determined the proportions of hexane, acetone and alcohol proportions that resulted in the maximum response of percentage of extracted pequi (Caryocar brasiliense) pulp oil.

Liang, Ricardo Nantes; Gonçalves, Wagner Diego; Martins, Marccus Victor Almeida; Crespilho, Frank Nelson

    Resumo em Inglês:

The electrochemical properties of micro and nano-electrodes are widely investigated due to their low faradaic and capacitive currents, leading to a new generation of smart and implantable devices. However, the current signals obtained in low-dimensional devices are strongly influenced by noise sources. In this paper, we show the evaluation of filters based on Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and their implementation in a graphical user interface (GUI) in MATLAB®. As a case study, we evaluated an electrochemical reaction process of charge transfer via outer-sphere. Results showed successful removal of most of the noise in signals, thus proving a promising tool for low-scale measurement.

  • Integração numérica de leis de velocidade diferenciais com o uso do SCILAB Educação

Sandes, Rafael Donizete Dutra; Ambrosio, Renato Canha; Angelucci, Camilo Andrea

    Resumo em Inglês:

In this work, we applied the free open source SCILAB software for the numerical integration of differential rate law equations to obtain the concentration profiles of chemical species involved in the kinetics of some complex reactions. An automated method was applied to construct the system of ordinary differential equations (ODE) from the postulated chemical models. The solutions of the ODEs were obtained numerically by standard SCILAB functions. We successfully simulated even complex chemical systems such as pH oscillators. This communication opens up the possibility of using SCILAB in simulations and modeling by our chemistry undergraduate students.

Sabadini, Edvaldo; Carvalho, Larissa Vieira Cavalcanti

    Resumo em Inglês:

The effects of ionic strength on ions in aqueous solutions are quite relevant, especially for biochemical systems, in which proteins and amino acids are involved. The teaching of this topic and more specifically, the Debye-Hückel limiting law, is central in chemistry undergraduate courses. In this work, we present a description of an experimental procedure based on the color change of aqueous solutions of bromocresol green (BCG), driven by addition of electrolyte. The contribution of charge product (z+|z-|) to the Debye-Hückel limiting law is demonstrated when the effects of NaCl and Na2SO4 on the color of BCG solutions are compared.
