  • Hidrogeles microestructurados de acrilamida y determinación de su capacidad de absorber agua y etanol

    Ortega, Jorge Alberto Cortés

    Resumo em Inglês:

This paper reports the synthesis of nanostructured hydrogels of acrylamide by a two-step polymerisation process. The first step is performed by inverse microemulsion polymerization (water-in-oil) of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPA), with these particles then added to aqueous solutions of acrylamide (AM), adding a crosslinking agent. The polymerization reaction is then initiated, thereby producing nanostructured hydrogels. We determined the capacity to absorb water, water and / or ethanol when nanostructured hydrogels were immersed in aqueous solutions with different concentrations of ethanol. It was found that the hydrogels were selective in absorbing water in all cases increasing with the ethanol concentration of the solutions.

Ibiapino, Amanda Laura; Figueiredo, Laysa Pires de; Lascalea, Gustavo E.; Prado, Rogério Junqueira

    Resumo em Inglês:

In this work, nanostructured samples of barium zirconate (BaZrO3) and calcium zirconate (CaZrO3) were synthesized by the gel-combustion method, using glycine as fuel. The ceramic powders were calcined at 550 °C for 2 h and subsequently heat treated at 1350 °C for 10 min (fast-firing). The X-ray diffraction technique was employed to identify and characterize the crystalline phases present in the synthesized powders, using the Rietveld method. Monophasic nanostructured samples of BaZrO3 and CaZrO3 presenting average crystallite sizes of around 8.5 and 10.3 nm, respectively, were found after fast-firing.

Sequinatto, Letícia; Reichert, José Miguel; Santos, Danilo Rheinheimer dos; Reinert, Dalvan José; Copetti, André Carlos Cruz

    Resumo em Inglês:

Tobacco cultivation in shallow soils and steep landscape under intense use of agrochemicals contributes to environment degradation. In this study, we assessed the concentration of agrochemicals in draw wells used for human consumption and a creek in a small catchment predominantly cropped to tobacco. Chlorpyrifos, flumetralin, and iprodione were determined by gas chromatography with electron capture detection, while imidalcloprid, atrazine, simazine, and clomazone were quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography with UV detection. Considering all sampling sites, all agrochemicals were detected at least once, except for flumetralin. The occurrence of agrochemicals in tobacco crops is a consequence of their fast transfer to surface water.

Alves, Natacha; Xavier, Claudia; Dullius, Jeane; Ligabue, Rosane; Ketzer, João Marcelo; Seferin, Marcus; Einloft, Sandra

    Resumo em Inglês:

Rising anthropogenic CO2 emissions are considered a major contributor to the greenhouse effect. There are several options for reducing atmospheric CO2 levels, and among these alternatives, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) has been identified as an effective and promising approach. This work investigated the feasibility of using serpentinite as a vehicle for carbon storage presenting a source-sink match. The main results of the work confirmed that serpentinite is appropriate for the carbonation process due to the high concentration of Mg in its composition.

  • Time-series forecasting of pollutant concentration levels using particle swarm optimization and artificial neural networks

Albuquerque Filho, Francisco S. de; Madeiro, Francisco; Fernandes, Sérgio M. M.; Mattos Neto, Paulo S. G. de; Ferreira, Tiago A. E.

    Resumo em Inglês:

This study evaluates the application of an intelligent hybrid system for time-series forecasting of atmospheric pollutant concentration levels. The proposed method consists of an artificial neural network combined with a particle swarm optimization algorithm. The method not only searches relevant time lags for the correct characterization of the time series, but also determines the best neural network architecture. An experimental analysis is performed using four real time series and the results are shown in terms of six performance measures. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed methodology achieves a fair prediction of the presented pollutant time series by using compact networks.
  • Avaliação do potencial de uso da hidroxiapatita para fertilização de solos Artigo

Oliveira, Milene Aparecida Rodrigues de; Paris, Elaine Cristina; Ribeiro, Caue

    Resumo em Inglês:

Plants absorb phosphorus from the soil, which has low levels of this element due to the poor solubility of these compounds in soil and high adsorption capacity of the element by soil particles. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess, using hydroxyapatite nanoparticles synthesized in the laboratory, the amount of phosphorus available under different conditions. The results showed that the phosphorus compound had highest solubility in hydroxyapatite sintered at 300°C in an oven for 2h and diluted to 0.05M with MilliQ water, corroborating the theory that the stronger the agglomeration of the nanoparticles, the fewer the pores and the poorer their solubility.

The aim of this work was to synthesize a polyurethane polymer matrix using castor oil as a polymer chain modifier, whose characteristics can be adjusted for use as a binder in the manufacture of energetic materials such as propellant and pyrotechnics for aerospace use. We attempted the partial substitution of hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB), a pre-polymer commonly used as a starting polyol in obtaining energetic matrix composites. Thermoanalytical techniques were employed to characterize the material based on castor oil and the unmodified HTPB. The results showed similar behaviors, confirming the possibility of their use as polymer matrix composites through the proposed adaptations.

Bottega, Fernanda C.; Oliveira, Marcelo R. L.; Garcia, Camila V.; Menezes, Daniele C.; Rubinger, Mayura M. M.; Zambolim, Laercio

    Resumo em Inglês:

Four new compounds with the general formula [Fe(phen)3][Zn(RSO2N=CS2)2], where phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, R = 4-FC6H4 (1), 4-ClC6H4 (2), 4-BrC6H4 (3) and 4-IC6H4 (4), respectively, were obtained by the reaction of the appropriate potassium N-R-sulfonyldithiocarbimate (RSO2N=CS2K2) and tris(1,10-phenanthroline)iron(II) sulfate, with zinc(II) acetate dihydrate in dimethylformamide. The elemental analyses and the IR data were consistent with the formation of the expected complexes salts. The ¹H and 13C NMR spectra showed the signals for the cationic iron(II) complex and dithiocarbimate moieties. The molar conductance data were consistent with the 1:1 cation:anion complexes in 1-4. The antifungal activities of the compounds were tested in vitro against Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides.
  • Cat's claw oxindole alkaloid isomerization induced by common extraction methods

Kaiser, Samuel; Verza, Simone Gasparin; Moraes, Renata Cougo; Resende, Pedro Ernesto de; Pavei, Cabral; Ortega, George González; Barreto, Fabiano

    Resumo em Inglês:

Cat's claw oxindole alkaloids are prone to isomerization in aqueous solution. However, studies on their behavior in extraction processes are scarce. This paper addressed the issue by considering five commonly used extraction processes. Unlike dynamic maceration (DM) and ultrasound-assisted extraction, substantial isomerization was induced by static maceration, turbo-extraction and reflux extraction. After heating under reflux in DM, the kinetic order of isomerization was established and equations were fitted successfully using a four-parameter Weibull model (R² > 0.999). Different isomerization rates and equilibrium constants were verified, revealing a possible matrix effect on alkaloid isomerization.
  • Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectral components of spin-labeled lipids in saturated phospholipid bilayers: effect of cholesterol

    Camargos, Heverton Silva; Alonso, Antonio

    Resumo em Inglês:

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy was used to study the main structural accommodations of spin labels in bilayers of saturated phosphatidylcholines with acyl chain lengths ranging from 16 to 22 carbon atoms. EPR spectra allowed the identification of two distinct spectral components in thermodynamic equilibrium at temperatures below and above the main phase transition. An accurate analysis of EPR spectra, using two fitting programs, enabled determination of the thermodynamic profile for these major probe accommodations. Focusing the analysis on two-component EPR spectra of a spin-labeled lipid, the influence of 40 mol % cholesterol in DPPC was studied.
  • Brazilian vodkas have undetectable levels of ethyl carbamate

    Pereira, Elainy V. S.; Oliveira, Sonia P. A.; Nóbrega, Ian C. C.; Lachenmeier, Dirk W.; Araújo, Adelia C. P.; Telles, Danuza L.; Silva, Marileide

    Resumo em Inglês:

While in Europe vodka is mainly derived from potatoes or cereals, a large proportion of Brazilian vodka is likely obtained from sugarcane, which contains ethyl carbamate (EC) precursors. EC, in addition to several other contaminants and congeners, were investigated in 32 samples of Brazilian vodka. All samples complied with the Brazilian regulations for congeners and contaminants, having EC content below 0.01 mg/L (detection limit). These results are probably related to the processing of vodka, in particular the use of extractive and rectifying stainless steel distillation columns, which allow the production of high strength spirits with low levels of congeners and contaminants.

Elvan, Hamide; Ozdes, Duygu; Duran, Celal; Sahin, Deniz; Tufekci, Mehmet; Bahadir, Zekeriyya

    Resumo em Inglês:

A new solid phase extraction (SPE) method has been developed for the selective separation and preconcentration of Cu (II) ions in food and water samples prior to its flame atomic absorption spectrometry determination. The method is based on the adsorption of the Cu(II) - 2-{[4-Amino-3-(4-methylphenyl-5-oxo-4,5-dihydro-1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl]acetyl}-N-phenyl hydrazinecarbothioamide complex on Amberlite XAD-8 resin. The metal complex retained on the resin was eluted with 7.5 mL of 2.0 mol L-1 HCl in acetone. The optimum conditions for the SPE of Cu(II) ions were investigated, and the method was subsequently applied to sea water, stream water, rice, tea, and tobacco samples for the determination of Cu(II) levels.

    Resumo em Inglês:

An efficient method for the rapid separation and purification of polyphenols from artichoke by polyamide column chromatography in combination with high-speed counter-current chromatography (HSCCC) was successfully built. The crude ethanol extracts from dry artichoke were first pre-separated by polyamide column chromatography and divided in two parts as sample 1 and sample 2. Then, the samples were further separated by HSCCC and yielded 7.8 mg of chlorogenic acid (compound I), 24.5 mg of luteolin-7-O-β-D-rutinoside (compound II), 18.4 mg of luteolin-7-O-β-D-glucoside (compound III), and 33.4 mg of cynarin (compound IV) with purity levels of 92.0%, 98.2%, 98.5%, and 98.0%, respectively, as determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. The chemical structures of these compounds were identified by electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR).

The present article involves a comparative study of the influence of oxygen or sulfur heteroatoms present in the central ring of polycyclic compounds, in order to clarify the correlation between the respective thermophysical or thermochemical properties and structural characteristics. Considering the importance of these types of compounds for their broad spectrum of application in diverse fields, from pharmacology to the development of new materials, the critical interpretation of such properties for their crucial role in the reactivity of these substances is of great interest. Knowledge on these thermodynamic data for key compounds is also relevant to the prediction and understanding of the properties and behavior of other parent compounds.
  • Biossurfactantes: propriedades anticorrosivas, antibiofilmes e antimicrobianas Revisão

Araujo, Lívia Vieira de; Freire, Denise Maria Guimarães; Nitschke, Márcia

    Resumo em Inglês:

Due to the importance of biofilms in the food industry, new products are being developed to enhance the efficiency of cleaning food-contact surfaces. Biosurfactants could be an alternative to synthetic products. The major advantages of biosurfactants over synthetic detergents are their low toxicity and highly biodegradable nature. Biosurfactants may also exhibit antimicrobial, anti-adhesive and anticorrosive activity concomitantly. In this review, we emphasize the potential application of biosurfactants as surface coating agents to prevent corrosion and decrease planktonic and sessile microbial growth.
  • Caracterização detalhada de material de referência certificado de carvão brasileiro Nota Técnica

Fallavena, Vera L. V.; Abreu, Cristiane S. de; Inácio, Taísi D.; Pires, Marçal; Azevedo, Carla M. N.; Fernandes, Iolanda D.; Ferret, Lizete S.; Martinez Tarazona, M. Rosa

    Resumo em Inglês:

The use and characterization of the first Certified Reference Material (CRM) of Brazilian coal for analytical quality control are presented. All results were determined within the limits of repeatability and reproducibility allowed under the standards. Notable among the characterization parameters was the mineral matter content (45.39%) obtained by an alternative procedure showing a low relative error (-2.1%) compared to the standard technique (low ashing temperature). The possible expanded application of this CRM application in national laboratories, beyond the certificated and reference parameters, has advantages such as lower cost and easy availability, but round robin tests must be performed.

Hernández-Mendoza, Héctor; Conde, Estefanía; Fernández, Marta; Yllera, Abel

    Resumo em Inglês:

In this study, the validation of a method for analyzing the uranium (U) concentration in human urine samples by inductively coupled plasma-sector field mass spectrometry (ICP-SFMS) was conducted. PROCORAD (the Association for the Promotion of Quality Control in Radiotoxicological Analysis) provided two urine samples spiked with unknown contents of U (Sample A = 33.6 ± 1.0 µg/L and Sample B = 3.3 ± 0.1 µg/L) and one unspiked sample as a blank. The analyses were directly performed on the diluted urine samples (dilution factor = 1:20) in 5% v/v HNO3. The results obtained by ICP-SFMS corresponded well with the reference values, and the limits of detection were 235U = 0.049 × 10-3 µg/L and 238U = 7.37 × 10-3 µg/L. The ICP-SFMS technique has been shown to be successful in the analysis of the U concentration in human urine samples and for the quantification of isotopic ratios.

The oxidation of sulphur compounds upon burning emits large quantities of SOx into the atmosphere. Therefore, there is growing interest in fast and accurate methods for analyzing sulphur content in fuels. The objective of this work was to compare four different methods of total sulphur determination in solid fuels. The methods used in this work were Eschka, Infrared, Thermal Conductivity Detection (TCD) and Ultraviolet Fluorescence Detection (UV). The preliminary results showed that TCD and UV methods (nonstandard methods for solid fuels) have similar precision to the infrared method (standard method) for high-sulphur coal samples.

A sensitive spectrophotometric method was developed for sulphate determination in automotive ethanol fuel. The method based on the reaction of the analyte with barium-dibromosulphonazo(III) complex lead to a decrease in the magnitude of the absorbance signals monitored at 649 nm. No sample pretreatment is required and the proposed method allows sulphate determination in the 0.45 - 6.50 mg L-1 range with R.S.D. < 2% and limit of detection of 0.14 mg L-1. The method has been successfully applied for sulphate determination in automotive ethanol fuel and the results agreed with the reference chromatographic method.
  • Least squares regression with errors in both variables: case studies

Oliveira, Elcio Cruz de; Aguiar, Paula Fernandes de

    Resumo em Inglês:

Analytical curves are normally obtained from discrete data by least squares regression. The least squares regression of data involving significant error in both x and y values should not be implemented by ordinary least squares (OLS). In this work, the use of orthogonal distance regression (ODR) is discussed as an alternative approach in order to take into account the error in the x variable. Four examples are presented to illustrate deviation between the results from both regression methods. The examples studied show that, in some situations, ODR coefficients must substitute for those of OLS, and, in other situations, the difference is not significant.

Fernandes, João Paulo dos Santos; Savino, Giovanna; Amarante, André Cortinas Gonçalves; Sousa, Milena Rodrigues de; Silva, Geane Ramos da; Cianciulli, Maria Eliza; Corrêa, Michelle Fidelis; Ferrarini, Márcio

    Resumo em Inglês:

Parabens are p-hydroxybenzoic acid esters widely used as preservatives. With the aim of teaching the structure-activity relationships (SAR) knowledge in a practical form, this paper proposed a practical class to view the SAR of parabens as antimicrobial agents. Methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl and isopentyl paraben compounds were synthesized and their respective antimicrobial activities were assessed through determination of minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 stains. With the MIC values, it was possible to verify theircorrelation with calculated lipophilicity (ClogP). This method can be applied in practical Medicinal Chemistry classes.
  • The use of Rich and Suter diagrams to explain the electron configurations of transition elements

Orofino, Hugo; Machado, Sergio P.; Faria, Roberto B.

    Resumo em Inglês:

Rich and Suter diagrams are a very useful tool to explain the electron configurations of all transition elements, and in particular, the s¹ and s0 configurations of the elements Cr, Cu, Nb, Mo, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, and Pt. The application of these diagrams to the inner transition elements also explains the electron configurations of lanthanoids and actinoids, except for Ce, Pa, U, Np, and Cm, whose electron configurations are indeed very special because they are a mixture of several configurations.

A didactic experiment is proposed aimed to extend the Flow Injection Analysis (FIA) based methodology to the area of physical chemistry/chemical reactors for undergraduate labs. Our prime objective was to describe the use of a gradient chamber for determination of the rate constant for the reaction between crystal violet and the hydroxide ion. The study was complemented by determining the effect of temperature on the rate constant. The kinetic parameters, activation energy and reaction rate constant are determined based on an assumption of rate orders. The main didactic advantages of the proposed experimental set-up are the use of less reagents, contributing to a more environmental friendly experiment. The experiment illustrates also the reduction of associated errors and time by using automated analysis owing to decreased operator manipulation.

    Resumo em Inglês:

A study evaluating Brazilian chemical researchers understanding of the scope of the terms Environmental Sustainability and Sustainable Development, and their assessment of how to deal with environmental fragility and limits, is reported. Results showed a certain degree of acknowledgement of the need for a more sustainable development, but little agreement on the magnitude of the environmental limits. The researchers recognized the limitations of the classical paradigms "of dilution" and "of risk", but showed no agreement on the requirements of the new "ecological paradigm" based on Environmental Sustainability and the 12 principles of Green Chemistry, important to assess the role of Green Chemistry for Sustainability.
  • Vicente Seabra Telles e a criação da nomenclatura em português para a Química 'Nova' de Lavoisier Assuntos Gerais

    Luna, Fernando J.

    Resumo em Inglês:

In 1787, Lavoisier and coworkers published a 314-page book entitled Méthode de nomenclature chimique in which a novel system for the naming of compounds and elements was presented. The Brazilian chemist Vicente Coelho de Seabra Telles (1764-1804) was responsible for translating it into Portuguese. Telles proposed the adoption not only of the Latin etymology, but decided to use Latin suffixes as well, because of the similarity between Latin and the Portuguese language. In doing so, he made the names of the compounds in Portuguese bear a closer resemblance to the names in Latin than to those in French or Spanish.
