(Floristic composition in thorny woodland and upland forest vegetation in the Vale do Pajeú region, Pernambuco). The aim of this study was to characterize the floristic composition of the native vegetation in four areas of the Pajeú valley, in the municipalities of Triunfo and Serra Talhada. The study areas were at an altitude of 1100 m, 900 m, 700 m and 500 m. Vouchers herbarium material of 159 species, distributed in 45 families, was collected from September, 1991 to March 1993. The families with the highest number of species were: at 1100 m - Myrtaceae (9), Flacourtiaceae, and Rubiaceae (6); at 900 m - Asteraceae, Myrtaceae, and Mimosaceae (6); at 700 m ¾ Euphorbiaceae (6), Mimosaceae (4), Caesalpiniaceae and Anacardiaceae (3); and at 500 m, Mimosaceae, Euphorbiaceae (7) and Caesalpiniaceae (4). Among the four areas, the highest floristic similarity occurred between 1100 and 900 m and between 700 and 500 m. The highest area, 1100 m, is occupied by a "brejo" forest type vegetation, the lowest areas, 700 and 500 m, by caatingas, and the area at 900 m by "brejo", associated with caatinga elements.

Aguilar-Sierra, Clara Isabel; Melhem, Therezinha Sant'Anna

A tribo Bursereae é euripolínica.

(Pollen morphology of the tribe Bursereae (Burseraceae) in South America). The neotropical genus Bursera (L.) Jacq. comprises seven species in South America. Commiphora Jacq., distributed mainly in the less humid parts of the tropics and subtropics of Africa and Asia, is only represented by C. leptophloeos (Mart.) Gillet. Pollen grains of five taxa of Bursereae were examined. The pollen material was acetolyzed, measured, described and photographed by light microscopy and, in most cases, also by electron microscopy scanning. The data obtained was statistically analysed by methods according to sample sizes. The pollen grains of Bursera are generally small, prolate-spheroidal, aspidote and with circular ambit, brevicolpate, striate or striate-reticulate. The studied species could be distinguished through differences in the ornamentation of the exine, the form of the endoaperture and the size of the pollen grains. The pollen grains of C. leptophloeos are of intermediate size, oblate spheroidal, subcircular ambit, moderately long colpi, and lolongate endoapertures with costa and retipilate ornamentation. The tribe Bursereae is eurypalynous.

Aguilar-Sierra, Clara Isabel; Melhem, Therezinha Sant'Anna

(Pollen morphology of the tribe Canarieae (Burseraceae) in South America). The tribe Canarieae is represented in South America by two genera, Dacryodes Valh and Trattinnickia Willd. Pollen grains from 27 collections representing 12 taxa were examined. The pollen material was acetolyzed, measured, described and photographed by light microscopy and, in most cases, also by electron microscopy scanning. The data obtained was statistically analysed by methods according to sample sizes. Dacryodes and Trattinnickia have the same intermediate size as well as form (mostly subprolate) of pollen grains. The light microscopic picture of the sexine of Dacryodes shows a psilate surface, while in Trattinnickia this is granulate; nevertheless, electron microscopic scanning examination reveals that in both taxa the surface is perforate-psilate. In the case of Dacryodes the size of pollen grains as well as the size of the apertures enable separation of D. glabra (Steyerm.) Cuatrec., D. nitens Cuatrec. and D. occidentale Cuatrec., while the other species are indistinguishable. In Trattinnickia the only characteristic that differentiated T. burserifolia Mart. from the other taxa studied was the aperture, it being brevicolpate in this species.

Aguilar-Sierra, Clara Isabel; Melhem, Therezinha Sant'Anna

(Pollen morphology of the tribe Protieae (Burseraceae) in South America). The tribe Protieae is represented in South America by the genera: Crepidospermum Hook. f., Protium Burm. f. and Tetragastris Gaertn. Crepidospermum comprises five species distributed mainly in Amazonia. Protium is a neotropical genus of approximately 146 species. Tetragastris is found almost exclusively in lowland moist forests in Central America, northern South America and parts of the Caribbean. Pollen grains from 177 collections representing 51 taxa were examined. The pollen material was acetolyzed, measured, described and photographed by light microcopy and, in most cases, also by electron microscopy scanning. The data obtained was statistically analysed by methods according the sample sizes. Pollen grains of Crepidospermum and Tetragastris are of the same intermediate size, being mostly subprolate with a triangular ambit, longicolpate, and psilate which indicates the stenopalynous nature of these genera. In Crepidospermum the species can be distinguished by the various characteristics of the apertures; the Tetragastris species studied are very similar in their pollen grains and were indistinguishable. Protium is diverse in the form of the pollen grains (spheric, prolate-spheroid, subprolate, prolate) and in the ornamentation of the exine (psilate, perforate, striate, micro-reticulate). Also as regards the polar diameter, the form and size of the endoaperture, the size of the colpus, the ornamentation of the colpus membrane, and the thickness of the exine, the studied species differed. These observations confirm that Protium is an euripalynous genus, in which, in most cases, the morphology of the pollen grain could support the taxonomic separation of species.
  • Response of Dalbergia miscolobium Benth. seedlings, a cerrado tree species, to mineral nutrient supply

    Sassaki, Regina M.; Felippe, G.M.

(Response of Dalbergia miscolobium Benth. seedlings, a cerrado tree species, to a mineral nutrient supply). The soil under the Brazilian cerrado vegetation is very poor in nutrients. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the addition of a nutrient solution in the early growth of D. miscolobium, a typical cerrado tree species, cultivated in cerrado soil. Seeds were germinated in Petri dishes and seven-day old seedlings were transfered to pots containing cerrado soil. These were supplied once a week with a normal, 1/2 or 1/10 strength nutrient solution. Four growth analysis were done over a period of 145 days from seed imbibition, in terms of dry mass, leaf area and carbohydrate and nitrogen contents. Other derived parameters were also analysed. The addition of a nutrient solution promoted early growth with a preferential separation of dry matter towards the tops; in the control seedlings (no nutrient addition) more dry matter accumulated in the root system. This suggests a preferential investment in root growth in poor soils such as the cerrado ones. Reliable evidence of this is given by the level of carbohydrate and protein which was higher in the roots than in the tops of plants growing in cerrado soil without the addition of nutrients.

(Microscopical fungi of the Atlantic rainforest of Paranapiacaba, São Paulo, Brazil). In the Atlantic rainforest of Paranapiacaba, state of São Paulo, 1770 occurrences of different fungal taxa were registered from July 1988 to May 1990. For stream water 319 occurrences were reported, 405 for the soil, 565 on submerged leaves of Alchornea triplinervia (Spreng.) M. Arg., and 481 on leaves placed on the soil surface. Mastigomycotina was represented by 20 taxa with 316 occurrences, Zygomycotina by 13 taxa with 266 occurrences, Deuteromycotina by 82 taxa with 1107 occurrences, and Ascomycotina by eight taxa with 81 records. The fungi were isolated by the leaf disk washing method, soil plate method, and baiting with chitinic, cheratinic and cellulosic substrates. The decomposing leaves of A. triplinervia supported the highest number of fungal taxa and total occurrences, followed by the soil and stream water.
  • Hipanto e tubo estaminal em Xylopia aromatica (Lam.) Mart. (Annonaceae)

Dias, Marilda C.; Castro, Marília de M.; Kinoshita, Luiza S.; Semir, João

    Resumo em Português:

(Hipanto e tubo estaminal em Xylopia aromatica (Lam.) Mart. (Annonaceae)).

(Hypanthium and staminal tube in Xylopia aromatica (Lam.) Mart. (Annonaceae)). A woody ring surrounding the carpels was observed in longitudinal sections of flowers of five species of Xylopia L.. The stamens and staminodes were spirally inserted on this ring. An anatomical study of the mature flowers of Xylopia aromatica (Lam.) Mart. was conducted to elucidate the nature of this structure, concentrating on the vascularization from the base of the receptacle to the stamens, staminodes and carpels. The woody ring was shown to be appendicular and of mixed origin. It consists of the fusion of the sepals, as well as external and internal petals and filaments in the basal region, thereby constituting the hypanthium. In the apical portion it is exclusively formed by the fusion of the filaments, thus constituting a staminal tube. The epidermal cells covering the stamens and staminodes have a lignified and thickened wall, distinguishing them from the other epidermal cells of the sepals, petals and carpels. Such cells also cover the woody ring, demonstrating its staminal origin. The woody texture of this ring is probably due to the presence of lignin in the walls of its epidermal cells. According to the literature, this ring has been interpreted as being of receptacular nature, without any anatomical support. The appendicular origin of the hypanthium is here reported for the first time for both of the genus Xylopia and Annonaceae.
  • Comparative uptake and metabolism of 2-[14C]-2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid in callus cultures of monocot (Dioscorea spp.) and dicot (Nicotiana tabacum L.) plants

(Comparative uptake and metabolism of 2-[14C]-2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid in callus cultures of monocot (Dioscorea spp.) and dicot (Nicotiana tabacum L.) plants). The uptake and metabolism of 2-[14C]-2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) were investigated in leaf calluses of Nicotiana tabacum, tuber calluses of Dioscorea opposita and calluses derived from zygotic embryos, leaves and petioles of Dioscorea composita. Striking similarities were evident in the patterns of 2,4-D metabolites and their chemical characteristics in the three callus types of D. composita compared, but significant differences were detected among the patterns of rnetabolites in the three species studied. Preliminary investigations on the stability of various metabolites (separated using TLC) by hydrolysis showed that sugar esters appeared to be the major metabolites in tobacco whilst in yams (D. opposita) glycosides were shown to be the main ones, which indicated a similarity between plants of Gramineae and Dioscoreaceae in terms of 2,4-D metabolism. Release of 2,4-D from tobacco callus cells upon their transfer to 2,4-D-free medium was detected and the implications of this are discussed in relation to the cultural conditions necessary to induce morphogenesis in vitro.

(Efeito de ésteres de ceras foliares epicuticulares de Bauhinia rufa (Steud.) Bong. e Stryphnodendron adstringens (Mart.)

(Effects of ester fractions from leaf epicuticular waxes of Bauhinia rufa (Steud.) Bong. and Stryphnodendron adstringens (Mart.) Coville from the cerrado on the aphid Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch.)). Ester fractions were isolated from the leaf epicuticular waxes of Bauhinia rufa (Steud.) Bong. and Stryphnodendron adstringens (Mart.) Coville collected in the Cerrado de Emas (Pirassununga, SP, Brazil). The bioassays of toxicity and reproductive index were carried out with esters from these species and the aphid Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch.). It was observed that the ester fractions from Bauhinia rufa and Stryphnodendron adstringens had a negative effect on the survival of Rhopalosiphum maidis. The ester fraction from Stryphnodendron adstringens also had a negative effect on the reproductive index of the aphid. These parameters decreased with the increase of ester concentration of artificial diets.
