This study focusses on the rules of politeness of a spoken corpus, evidenced by the repairs of their transgression and also by speaker's intents to concert agreements between participants and evade conflict. We also inquired about the ideal sought through those norms: in positive politeness, that of a friendly person, who has knowledge of his/her language and evades inappropriate topics. In negative politeness, that of a person who defends, although gently, her own space and respects that of the others.
  • Construções aplicativas em Panará Artigos

    Dourado, Luciana

The aim of this paper is to analyze the postposition incorporation (Baker 1988) into the verb of the Panará language (Jê family, Macro-Jê stock) to form applicative constructions (Nakamura 1997). The focus are the constructions with incoporated postposition for which a phonetic copy is kept. This analysis is supported by the proposal of Nunes (1999, 2001) according to which the phonetic realization of the trace of the incorporated postposition does not compromise the linearization of the structure because the postposition and the host verb can be analyzed as one word in the phonogical component.
  • Precisamos de estatística quando temos a lingüística? Articles

Statistics is known to be a quantitative approach to research. However, most of the research done in the fields of language and linguistics is of a different kind, namely qualitative. Succinctly, qualitative analysis differs from quantitative analysis is that in the former no attempt is made to assign frequencies, percentages and the like, to the linguistic features found or identified in the data. In quantitative research, linguistic features are classified and counted, and even more complex statistical models are constructed in order to explain these observed facts. In qualitative research, however, we use the data only for identifying and describing features of language usage and for providing real occurrences/examples of particular phenomena. In this paper, we shall try to show how quantitative methods and statistical techniques can supplement qualitative analyses of language. We shall attempt to present some mathematical and statistical properties of natural languages, and introduce some of the quantitative methods which are of the most value in working empirically with texts and corpora, illustrating the various issues with numerous examples and moving from the most basic descriptive techniques (frequency counts and percentages) to decision-taking techniques (chi-square and z-score) and to more sophisticated statistical language models (Type-Token/Lemma-Token/Lemma-Type formulae, cluster analysis and discriminant function analysis).
  • Segmentação de corpora de textos Articles

    Sardinha, Tony Berber

O tamanho total do corpus é 1.262.710 palavras.

The aim of the research presented here is to report on a corpus-based method for discourse analysis that is based on the notion of segmentation, or the division of texts into cohesive portions. For the purposes of this investigation, a segment is defined as a contiguous portion of written text consisting of at least two sentences. The segmentation procedure developed for the study is called LSM (link set median), which is based on the identification of lexical repetition in text. The data analysed in this investigation were three corpora of 100 texts each. Each corpus was composed of texts of one particular genre: research articles, annual business reports, and encyclopaedia entries. The total number of words in the three corpora was 1,262,710 words. The segments inserted in the texts by the LSM procedure were compared to the internal section divisions in the texts. Afterwards, the results obtained through the LSM procedure were then compared to segmentation carried out at random. The results indicated that the LSM procedure worked better than random, suggesting that lexical repetition accounts in part for the way texts are segmented into sections.

This paper investigates what the semantics of generic sentences in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) says about the denotation of Noun Phrases in that language. More specifically, it addresses the syntactic and semantic differences among the indefinite nominals that get a generic interpretation in BP. The paper may also be taken to test well-known hypotheses about the functioning of genericity in natural languages.
  • A evolução da noção de parâmetros Retrospectiva

    Kato, Mary A.

This paper presents an overview of the concept of parameter in the Principles and Parameters theory, showing that a) in the first stage parameters were conceived as variation associated to the Principles and b) in the second stage as properties of the lexicon, and more specifically as properties of functional categories. The latter view has also developed from a substantive conception of functional categories to a more formal abstract characterization of functional heads. The paper also discusses parameters related to different levels of representation.
