O artigo examina a crítica da razão governamental moderna efetuada por Foucault sob dois aspectos fundamentais: em primeiro lugar, analisa a noção de crítica a partir de uma certa leitura que faz de Kant, articulada a uma ontologia do presente. Em segundo lugar, investiga o lugar ocupado pelo liberalismo neste procedimento crítico. Procura enfim mostrar que a crítica de Foucault escapa à imputação de reformismo.

The article examines modern criticism of governamental reason which is focused by Foucault under two main aspects. First he analyses the concept of critique based on his own interpretation of Kant's work, articulated with an "ontology of the present". Besides this, Foucault analyses the place ocuppied by liberalism in this critical procedure. Thus the article intends to show that Foucault's criticism escapes from the imputation of reformism.

Foucault faz filosofia investigando a história, mas não escreve uma "história da filosofia". Não exclui, entretanto, a abordagem dos filósofos: permeando os escritos sobre diferentes "objetos", inscreve-se, como que "em meio a eles", a leitura das filosofias. Pode-se destacar algumas passagens específicas e, a título de ilustração, exemplificar o modo foucaultiano de leitura dos filósofos. Por outro lado, Foucault também não toma por tema uma reflexão sobre a história da filosofia. Entretanto, uma aproximação com autores que realizam esta reflexão permite estabelecer algumas diferenças e semelhanças e entender que as histórias que Foucault escreve - permeadas de abordagens de filósofos - é investida de natureza filosófica.

Foucault generates philosophy by investigating history, but is not the author of a "history of philosophy". He does not exclude, however, the philosophical approach: within the texture of his writings on several objects, one finds the thread of a reading of philosophies. Certain specific passages can be pointed out which, by way of illustration, exemplify the Foucaultian reading of philosophers. On the other hand, Foucault does not choose as subject matter a reflection on the history of philosophy. Nevertheless, an approximation with authors who carry out such a reflection allows us to establish certain differences and similarities and to understand that the histories which Foucault writes - pervaded by the approaches of and to philosophers - is vested with a philosophical nature.

Em diversas ocasiões, Michel Foucault declarou afinidades com o pensamento de Georges Bataille, chegando a apresentar-se como seu discípulo. Essa filiação pode ser reconhecida na intensidade com que ambos se empenharam em desconstruir a idéia moderna de razão, consolidada em torno das noções de saber e verdade. Contudo, uma aproximação mais rigorosa entre os dois pensadores nos coloca diante de diferenças significativas, que supõem distintos fundamentos críticos. A arquitetura pode ser um locus privilegiado para analisarmos tais diferenças. Foucault vê os edifícios por dentro; Bataille os vê de fora. Isso traz resultados diversos: se para o autor de A microfísica do poder esboça-se um espaço sem saída, para o pensador de A experiência interior abre-se a possibilidade de conceber "jardins secretos", em contraposição aos monumentos ameaçadores. Insinuam-se aí, também, diferentes leitores de Nietszche.

On several occasions, Michel Foucault expressed his affinity with the thinking of Georges Bataille, even going so far as to present himself as the latter's disciple. Such filiation can indeed be perceived in the intensity with which both scholars engaged themselves in deconstructing the modern notion of reason, as anchored to the notions of knowledge and truth. A stricter approximation of the two thinkers, however, places us before significant differences, which indicate differing critical fundaments. Architecture suggests itself as a privileged locus for engaging on an analysis of such differences. Foucault observes buildings from within; Bataille sees them from the outside. This brings about distinct results: if, for the creator of The microphysics of power, a cul de sac is etched, for the author of The inner experience the possibility of conceiving 'secret gardens' offers itself, in contraposition to the threatening monuments. This, in turn, hints at different readers of Nietszche.

The article investigates the reading of Michel Foucault with respect to the origin of modern thinking in the turning of the eighteenth to the nineteenth century. Essencially different from classic thinking, the modern thinking roots itself in history, in the conditioned, in finitude. There, new objects turn themselves possible (life, production, language), as well as a new philosophy (a critical one). And, from inside this new epistemic space, a figure which was absent in the tradition of western thought: Man.

A partir das últimas obras de Foucault, procuro analisar a importância do seu trabalho sobre uma história do pensamento, em que a noção de acontecimento é central. Articulada às noções de atualidade e de problematização constitui o modo como Foucault tematizará o que chama de uma ontologia do presente. A partir de Kant caracteriza o ethos filosófico da crítica do presente, inserindose, de uma maneira específica, nesta tradição. Definindo a problematização da atualidade como uma reativação da questão da Aufklärung, faz desta um acontecimento que nos questiona, enquanto possibilidade de constituição de nós mesmos, como sujeitos autônomos. A interrogação sobre os limites do presente e a possibilidade de sua transgressão instaura um campo problemático do pensamento, na tematização das questões da autonomia e da liberdade. É a partir desse campo que formula a sua interrogação sobre os gregos da Grécia clássica, a questão da ética, como um tipo de relação que determina como o indivíduo se constitui como sujeito moral de suas próprias ações.

Based on Foucault's last works, I intend to analyse the importance of his work about a history of thought in which the concept of event is important. Articulated with the concepts of actuality and of problematization it constitutes the means by which Foucault focuses what he calls an ontology of the present. Based on Kant he characterizes the philosophic ethos of the critique of the present, following this tradition in a specific way. By defining the questioning of actuality as a revival of the question of the Aufklärung, Foucault makes of it an event which, if conceived as a possibility of the constitution of ourselves, questions us as autonomous subjects. The question about the limits of the present and about the possibility of violationg them restores a problematic field of thought through concentrating on the problematic issue of autonomy and liberty. Starting from this field he formulates his question about the Greeks in Classic Greece, of ethics as a kind of relation which determines how the individual constitutes itself as a moral subject of his own actions.

O artigo investiga as transformações nas concepções do que é história e, portanto, nas formas de estudá-la, após as proposições conceituais elaboradas por Foucault. A mudança do foco da análise dos fatos e eventos para as bases epistemológicas das formas de discurso que os conceberam enquanto tais, fará com que o historiador busque compreender os campos de relações de força nos quais se constituem os jogos de poder, e não mais se deter em uma suposta verdade documental.

The article analyses the transformations in the concepts of what is history and, thus, in the forms of studying it after Foucault formulated his conceptual propositions. The change of the analysis' focus from facts and events to the epistemological bases of the discourse forms that conceived them will make it possible for the historian to comprehend the fields of power-relations in which power-games constitute themselves without detaining in a supposed documentary truth.

Compreender a forma pela qual se estruturam as relações sociais, em especial as relações desiguais de obediência e dominação que justificam a autoridade e a natureza das obrigações políticas, tem sido uma tarefa constante do pensamento humano. Neste texto sustentamos que Michel Foucault deu uma contribuição inegável a uma compreensão melhor desta ordem de fenômenos. Na primeira parte examinamos algumas das características do seu conceito de poder. Na segunda, privilegiamos um outro eixo de análise, acompanhando as transformações que este conceito sofreu ao longo dos anos 70 em sua obra.

To understand the way social relations are structured, in particular the unequal relations of obedience and domination which justify both autority and the nature of of political obligation, has been one of the constant efforts of human thought. In this paper we sustain that Michel Foucault has offered a decisive contribuition to a better understanding of these social phenomena. In the first part, we examine some characteristics of Foucault's concept of power. In the second, we followed the transformations which this concept suffered along the seventies in his work.

Mais do que a teoria do poder, Foucault propõe regras ou cautelas metodológicas. Diferentemente das concepções correntes, Foucault pretende explicar o poder sem o rei como sua fonte e natureza. Depois de comparar diferentes concepções correntes de poder, mostrando sua dependência da noção de um soberano, define-se o poder em Foucault como uma relação assimétrica que institui a autoridade e a obediência, e não como um objeto preexistente em um soberano, que o usa para dominar seus súditos. Para ilustrar o conceito foucaultiano de poder, comenta-se uma situação atual da política nacional.

Power is defined in Michel Foucault's conceptions as a set of methodological cautions rather than a complete theory. As oposed to current modern conceptions, Foucault deals with a definition of power that does not include "the king" as a source and a center from where power is supposed to flow. After comparing different modern current definitions of power, emphasizing their need for the impersonation of a "king" to explain power, Foucault's definition is presented as an assymetrical relationship. Rather than two preexisting actors, one full of power and other powerless, which would explain authority and obedience, that relantionship is presented as resulting in the existence of two political actors, a "sovereign" and subject. As an illustration, a current situation in Brazilian politics is commented in Foucault's terme.

Esta comunicação objetiva interrogar se as transformções ocorridas na Física (a Teoria da Relatividade de Einstein e a Mecânica Ondulatória - a Microfísica) conduziram o saber (a ciência e a filosofia) a um novo olhar sobre o mundo: a contemporaneidade. A questão central deste trabalho é mostrar a relação entre o comportamento dos elementos infinitesimais, objeto da Mecânica Ondulatória, e a nova concepção sobre o poder em Foucault. A partir dessa relação, permanece a indagação sobre as transformações ocorridas no campo do saber e se elas, conjuntamente, conduziram a uma nova epistéme.

This paper purports to discuss whether the transformations which occurred in Physics (Einstein's Theory of Relativity and Wave Mechanics - Microphysics) have lead knowledge (Science and Philosophy) to acquire a new way of considering the world: contemporaneity. The central issue proposed is to show the relationship between the behaviour of infinitesimal elements, which are the object of Wave Mechanics, and the new concept of power in Foucault. This relation being established, the paper moves on to inquire as to the transformations which have taken place in the field of knowledge and if such transformations have jointly lead us to a new epistéme.

O artigo discute as objeções levantadas às idéias de Foucault sobre a ética do sujeito, que levariam a um descompromisso com os valores universais e princípios das democracias liberais. Discutindo as proposições de Taylor, Hochlitz, Hadot e Rorty, a resposta de Foucault se construiria a partir de uma mudança radical na imagem do sujeito e nos modos de vida relacional que, no caso da sexualidade, ao se redescreverem as categorias, colocaria em questão a atual hierarquia moral das práticas sexuais, com suas relações fixas de dominação e sujeição.

The article discusses the objections taken to Foucault's ideas about the subject's ethics which would lead to an absence of compromise with universal values and principles of the liberal democracies. Discussing Taylor's, Hochlitz's, Hadot's and Rorty's propositions Foucault's answer would be formulated based on a radical change in the subject's image and in the ways of building up relations which, in case of sexuality, as the categories are re-defined, would question the actual moral hierarchy of sexual practices with its fixed domination and subjection relationships.

A partir de uma entrevista em que Foucault coloca a obra de Heidegger como uma das duas bases fundamentais de seu próprio pensamento (a outra é Nietzsche), o texto desenvolve uma das possibilidades de aproximação entre Heidegger e Foucault: a compreensão da ética enquanto morada e habitação. Os trabalhos derradeiros de Foucault, em que se renova o pensamento da ética através de um nítida separação entre ética e moral e mediante uma análise da ética enquanto procedimentos e técnicas de subjetivação - as tecnologias de si - são então contemplados por este ângulo. Ao final, é retomada e discutida a última mensagem de Foucault, a sua proposta de uma ética entendida como uma nova estética existencial.

Based on an interview given by Foucault where he acknowledges the work of Heidegger and Nietzsche as the two main pillars of his own thought, the essay explores one way of approximating Heidegger and Foucault: the understanding of ethics as dwelling and inhabitation. The renewal of thought on ethics which takes place in the latest works by Foucault, through a sharp separation between ethics and moral philosophy and through an analysis of ethics as procedures and techniques of subjectivation - as technologies of self - are being here analysed from the point of view of ethics as dwelling and inhabitation. Finally, Foucault's last message, his proposition of ethics understood as an new esthetic of existence is here recuperated and discussed.

Martin Jay (1986) e John Rajchman (1988) escreveram ensaios sobre o espaço da visão e do visual na obra de Foucault. Porém, se a questão é a mesma, o modo de ver dos autores é oposto. Interrogando esses dois ensaios, este artigo pretende configurar uma outra visão sobre o império do olhar e a arte de ver nos escritos de Foucault. A relação entre visão e pensamento é considerada na perspectiva das problematizações.

Martin Jay (1986) and John Rajchman (1988) have written essays about the space of vision and of the visual in Foucault's philosophical work. Although the theme is the same the author's perspectives are very different. Thus, concernig these two essays, the purpose of this article is to circumscribe another vision about the empire of the gaze and the art of seeing in Foucault's writings. The relationship between vision and thought is considered under the perspective of problematizations.

Foucault pensou o papel do intelectual na contestação a Sartre e aos pressupostos do engagement, em especial os associados à filosofia da consciência e ao humanismo. Depois de 1968, porém, quando os fundamentos políticos do sartrismo desabavam - em particular a proximidade do Partido Comunista - Sartre pôde fazer causa comum com Foucault, ao mesmo tempo que este assumia, de boa ou má vontade, papéis que sempre negara, como o da voz pública.

Foucault reflected upon the role of the intellect by contesting Sartre and the pressupositions of the engagement, especially the ones associated to the philosophy of conscience and humanism. After 1968, however, when the political bases of sartrism crumbled - particularly the proximity of the Communist Party -, Sartre could make common force with Foucault at the same time the latter assumed, willing of not, roles he had always refused, as the one of being a public voice.
