Uma leitura feminista do binarismo local/global do espaço discursivo em torno da rebelião maia em Chiapas tanto afirma quanto contesta teorias predominantes pós-modernas sobre a relação entre corpo humano e tecnologias cibernéticas. Esse espaço híbrido transgride e confirma fronteiras entre ator/atriz e audiência, escritor/a e leitor/a, humano e máquina. A relação entre o teatro da resistência material na Zona de Conflito e o crescimento da resistência virtual no Ciber-Chiapas ilustra a natureza ciborgue material/tecnológica da rebelião de Chiapas.

The global circulation of Neo-Zapatistas and non-Indigenous solidarity activists as symbols of resistance in cyberspace between 1994 and 2001 suggests the need for new ways to read social movements in the digital age. A feminist reading of the dual local/global characteristics of the discursive space surrounding the Maya rebellion in Chiapas both affirms and contests prevalent postmodern theories about the relationship between the human body and cybernetic technologies. This hybrid space both transgresses and affirms borders between actor and audience, writer and reader, human and machine. The relationship between the theater of material resistance in the physical Conflict Zone and the growth of virtual resistance in Cyber-Chiapas illustrates the 'cyborg' material/technological nature of the Chiapas rebellion.

Análise de Almanac of the Dead à luz de teorias feministas e de uma perspectiva pós-moderna segundo a qual a noção de passados presentes é enfatizada através da exploração da metáfora da fotografia viva de Marx, mostrada no romance. A paixão da personagem Angelita pela fotografia de Marx é vista como uma forma de síntese entre a percepção indígena do tempo como eternos presentes - que é também resistência à opressão, uma vez que o passado não é jamais esquecido - e os conceitos marxistas de tempo e história.

This article offers an analysis of Almanac of the Dead, by Angelita La Escapía, in light of feminist theories and of a post-modern perspective on time, emphasizing the notion of present pasts through the exploration of the metaphor of a live photograph of Marx, shown in the novel. The passion the character Angelita demonstrates for the photograph of Marx is seen as form of synthesis between the Native American perception of time as eternal presents -- which is also resistance against oppression insofar as the past is never forgotten --, and the Marxist concepts of time and history.

Neste ensaio discutem-se a construção do preconceito e a visibilidade das discriminações decorrentes, duplamente associadas à condição de emergência das diferenças: seja pela afirmação e manipulação da condição da diferença, seja por sua insistente negação ou dissimulação. Em ambos os casos, o não-reconhecimento das diferenças ou a falta de respeito a elas se fazem presentes, criando novos padrões de violência. This essay examines the construction of prejudice <FONT FACE=Symbol>¾</FONT> and the visibility of the ensuing discriminations <FONT FACE=Symbol>¾</FONT> associated with the emergence of differences, be it through the affirmation and manipulation of the conditions of difference or through their denial and dissimulation. In both cases, there is a lack of recognition of, or disrespect for, differences that is constitutive of new patterns of violence. This essay builds a bridge between discrimination and violence, emphasizing the diverse forms of discrimination and exclusion, which include: the juridical parameters related to co-existence and re-cognition; the social sciences approach to the construction of differences/non-similarities; the conceptual framework of the category 'prejudice' and its derivative forms of discrimination and social exclusion; the mechanisms of prejudice; and the difference-prejudice relation, image and rationalization of the Other .

Análise do filme Tudo sobre minha mãe, do cineasta espanhol Pedro Almodóvar, enfocando a personagem travesti Agrado. Depois de uma comparação com outros filmes que abordam o fenômeno transgênero, é feita uma discussão em torno da noção de corporalidade e da construção do sujeito, dialogando sobretudo com as teorias do corpo da etnologia ameríndia brasileira. O ensaio busca propor alguns elementos para uma reflexão sobre a importância da análise de experiências de margem na renovação teórica no campo dos estudos feministas e de gênero. A experiência corporificada de 'tornar-se outro' dramatiza os mecanismos de construção da diferença e se apresenta como um empreendimento anti-hierárquico desestabilizador de políticas dominantes da subjetividade.

This essays does a reading of Pedro Almodovar's film All About My Mother, focusing on the transvestite character, Agrado. After drawing a comparison with other films on the subject of transgendering, I discuss notions of embodiedness and the construction of the subject by placing them in the context of theories about the body in Brazilian ethnology. My purpose is to offer some elements for a reflection on the experiences at/of the margins as a way of renewing the theoretical debates in feminist and gender studies. The bodily experience of 'becoming the other' dramatizes the mechanisms that are in play in the construction of difference and can be seen as an anti-hierarchical force destabilizing dominant politics of subjectivity.

Tanto os aspectos de gênero da discriminação racial quanto os aspectos raciais da discriminação de gênero não são totalmente apreendidos pelos discursos dos direitos humanos. O presente documento, baseado no crescente reconhecimento de que as discriminações de raça e de gênero não são fenômenos mutuamente excludentes, propõe um modelo provisório para a identificação das várias formas de subordinação que refletem os efeitos interativos das discriminações de raça e de gênero. Este documento também sugere um protocolo provisório a ser seguido, a fim de melhor identificar as situações em que tal discriminação interativa possa ter ocorrido e, além disso, defende que a responsabilidade de lidar com as causas e as conseqüências dessa discriminação deva ser amplamente compartilhada entre todas as instituições de direitos humanos.

Neither the gender aspects of racial discrimination nor the racial aspects of gender discrimination are fully comprehended within human rights discourses. Building on the growing recognition that race and gender discrimination are not mutually exclusive phenomena, this background paper forwards a provisional framework to identify various forms of subordination that can be said to reflect the interactive effects of race and gender discrimination. It suggests a provisional protocol to be followed to better identify the occasions in which such interactive discrimination may have occurred, and posits further that the responsibility to address the causes and consequences of such discrimination be shared widely among all human rights institutions.

Este relatório analisa a interseccionalidade como uma abordagem feminista com significante impacto nos discursos e debates durante o Fórum de ONGs e a Conferência Mundial Contra o Racismo, em Durban, África do Sul. O termo 'interseccionalidade' se refere às articulações entre a discriminação de gênero, a homofobia, o racismo e a exploração de classe. Falando do lugar de enunciação de mulheres de cor feministas situadas nos territórios geográficos dos Estados Unidos, as autoras enfatizam algumas questões-chave e tendências dos movimentos sociais que foram ignoradas pela mídia estadunidense. Alternativamente, o relatório examina como a introdução das 'intolerâncias correlatas' na agenda da Conferência permitiu discussões mais amplas sobre os efeitos da globalização no agravamento do racismo e sobre as múltiplas opressões com relação à orientação sexual e aos direitos sexuais. This report examines 'intersectionality' as a feminist approach that significantly impacted the discourses and conversations that took place at the World Conference Against Racism and its parallel NGO Forum, in Durban, South Africa in 2001. The term 'intersectionality' refers to the links between gender discrimination, homophobia, racism and class exploitation. As women of color feminist scholars positioned within the geographic territories of the U.S., the authors specifically highlight key issues and social movement trends that were ignored by the U.S. media. Alternatively, this report focuses on how the conference framework of 'related intolerance' allowed for broader conversations on how racism is exacerbated by globalization as well as on multiple oppressions in relation to sexual orientation and sexual rights. The authors emphasize how an insistence on discussing the significance of race and gender as well as class, in the context of neo-liberal capitalism, puts important new coordinates on the maps of transnational feminist organizing and anti-globalization movement.

Este artigo retoma o tema da diversidade no movimento de mulheres, a partir de uma reflexão sobre o envolvimento da Articulação de Mulheres Brasileiras (AMB) na III Conferência Mundial contra o Racismo. As condições que determinaram essa atuação são buscadas nos confrontos e negociações que marcaram as trajetórias da organização política das mulheres e do pensamento feminista no Brasil. Para as autoras, o debate sobre as condições específicas da subordinação, proposto pelas mulheres negras, abriu espaço para outras abordagens sobre o papel das mulheres nos sistemas de produção e reprodução, assim como sobre o caráter patriarcal e escravocrata da sociedade brasileira. Contudo, tais abordagens só passaram a ser incorporadas à prática do movimento feminista ao longo da preparação das Conferências de Beijing e Bejing+5. Nesse sentido, a participação da AMB em Durban sinalizaria o avanço no reconhecimento da identidade das mulheres negras, na afirmação da diversidade e na construção de uma agenda política que coloca no centro a intersecção das discriminações de gênero e raça.

This article addresses the issue of diversity in the women's movement through an assessment of the participation of the Articulação das Mulheres Brasileiras (AMB) in the III World Conference Against Racism. The conditions that determined this participation can be found in the struggles and negotiations that marked the trajectories of women's political organization and of feminist thought in Brazil. For the authors, the debate black women proposed concerning specific conditions of subordination opened up new possibilities for analyzing women's role in production and reproduction. However, these approaches were only incorporated into the practice of the feminist movement during preparation for both the Beijing Conference and Beijing+5. The participation of the AMB in the Durban Conference points out to the increasing recognition of black women's identity, the acknowledgment of diversity and the construction of a political agenda that places the intersection of gender and race discrimination at the center.

O artigo registra as principais iniciativas de organização do movimento negro para a III Conferência contra o Racismo. Especial destaque é dado à Articulação de Organizações de Mulheres Negras Brasileiras pró-Durban, cuja presença marcante no processo garantiu conquistas importantes nos documentos finais, tanto da Conferência das Américas (em dezembro de 2000) como da Conferência de Durban (agosto/setembro de 2001). A partir da participação nessa Articulação, a autora discute as contradições e conflitos que emergiram no debate entre as nações presentes à Conferência, evidenciando seus nexos com o racismo, o colonialismo e a expansão econômica do Ocidente. Ao mesmo tempo, esboça sua visão sobre os ganhos políticos que a Conferência representou para mulheres e homens negros da diáspora, especialmente na América Latina, e os desafios que se colocam para a superação do fosso que os separa dos brancos no Brasil.

This article assesses the main initiatives taken by the black movement organization in preparation for the III World Conference Against Racism. Particular attention is given to the Articulação das Mulheres Negras Brasileiras Pro-Durban, whose meaningful participation in the process resulted in important gains concerning the final documents drawn, respectively, at the Conference of the Americas (December 2000) and at the Durban Conference (August-September 2001). The author, drawing from her experience as a participant in the Articulação das Mulheres Negras, discusses some of the conflicts and contradictions that emerged among the countries present at the Conference and which were revealing of their ties with racism, colonialism and Western economic expansion. She also analyzes the political gains brought about by the Conference to women and men of the black diaspora, more specifically the Latin American black diaspora, as well as the challenges that the overcoming of the chasm between whites and blacks in Brazil poses today.
