Inspired in the narratives of members of a Brazilian association of adopted children, this article seeks to put into perspective the stories of women who gave their children in adoption during the mid-20th century. Relying on fragmentary evidence - from interviews with adoptees, letters published on the association´s site, judicial archives (for the state of Rio Grande do Sul), annual reports from Porto Alegre´s major hospital, and summary information furnished by philanthropic institutions that received unwed mothers decades ago - our analysis addresses two questions framed by the adoptees themselves: why were they given in adoption? And why have the details of their adoptions been systematically silenced by their adoptive parents as well as the intermediaries and state authorities? Our findings suggest diverse possible explanations for giving a child in adoption in Brazil during the years from 1950 to1970: women´s lack of legal and economic autonomy, a repressive sexual morality, and geographic and conjugal instability linked to poverty. At the same time, the very difficulties we confronted in encountering information on "abandoning mothers" of the time raise hypotheses on institutional disputes (between adoptive parents, philanthropic institutions and the tribunals) that imposed silence on this particular moment in the evolution of legal adoption in Brazil.

This work uses a gender perspective to analyse the discourse in six documents in the jurisprudence of Minas Gerais. The objective is to understand how lawyers appeal until the present date to the legitimate defence of honour in trials of men who have killed a woman in order to avoid punishment for their crime. The analysis is based on two sets of studies: the study of the legislation concerning the concept of honour since the colonial period in Brazil and the study of the struggle that the Brazilian feminist movement has undertaken to remove violence against women from the private sphere and turn it into gender violence. The work attempts to show that the murder of women is the final step in a chain of violations against women, which begins in the devalued way that women are produced in discourse.

This article studies the impact of the International Women's Year (1975) in Argentina. Its main activity was an International Conference which took place in Mexico City between June, 19 and July, 2. At that moment, Argentina was going though a time of strong political conflict, a time embedded between two fierce dictatorships (1966-1973 y 1976-1983). It is a topic which has not been so much visible in historiographical studies and that this article considers together with the invocation of women's rights as a disputable political cause. The invitation addressed by the UN made women more visible as individuals with their own demands. The analysis of this topic helps evidence the limits and unwillingness of the State and of some women and women's groups to embrace those demands.

In this text, we put forward a critical interpretation of the historic dichotomy between 'private' and 'public' as a fundamental dynamic of modernity. From the perspective of gender we discuss the boundaries that have been constructed between the collective space of citizenship and sociability and the individual space of intimacy and inequality. We make a case for a relationship of complicity, albeit tense, between the two spheres, observing that private life has been extensively moulded by the changes that have taken place in public life. Making use of the different definitions of 'public', we note that as the traditional, essentially masculine, sociabilities studied by Ariès or Sennett, among others, were eroded, the sense of intimacy increased. There was also greater inclusion of the private in the public through the expansion of citizenship, following the battles fought in the public sphere by various emancipation movements, e.g. those of the workers or the feminists. As individuals were taken out of the community, clan or family group, where the inequalities were "natural", in the Aristotelian sense of the term, they progressively rediscovered themselves as individuals endowed with citizenship. If the private space has become of central importance in the definition of an identity, it is also increasingly crossed by public, regulatory mechanisms. For this reason, the ascent of the private, which has been a topic of debate in recent decades, should be carefully reinterpreted.

Using the concept of gender as an object of analysis, this article aims at having a retrospective description of the methodological and conceptual evolution regarding the influence of extralegal aspects on judicial decisions research through the most prominent authors. In the specific case of Gender, this evolution is characterized by a critical sophistication. The transition in the explanations in differential criminal sentences attributed to men and women evolved from a simplistic perspective linked to paternalism and chivalry hypothesis to more complex and multifaceted standpoints related to the different family roles exercised by men and women.
  • Feminismo negro: raça, identidade e saúde reprodutiva no Brasil (1975-1993) Artigos

Damasco, Mariana Santos; Maio, Marcos Chor; Monteiro, Simone

This article aims to investigate the interface between gender, color/race and public health in Brazil, focusing on the importance of reproductive health for the formation of a black feminism in the country, between the years 1975 to 1993. The black feminism was shaped from the relations between black activists and feminist and black rights movements. The topic of reproductive health, under a racial perspective, gained importance in the 1980's from reports of surgical sterilization among black women. The article investigates the context in which such allegations have emerged and their relevance to the formation of an identity among black activists.

The post-structuralist conception of identity, from an ethnomethodological perspective, brought deep changes to the way gender and language relations are established. Gender is thus taken as a social construction, which needs to be (re)negotiated in every and each new interaction and, since it does not exist outside discourse, it does not have a fixed and stable status. To understand how gender identities are interactionally negotiated , and here considering specifically the aspects related to maternity, I present the importance of Conversation Analysis, through the qualitative analysis of naturalistic interactions between a psychologist and candidates for vasectomy and tubal ligation, which occurred at a public health center in the south of Brazil. What is shown, through the analysis of three excerpts of interaction, is that small perturbations in the performances of maternity trouble the notion of a stable maternity, which gives us a practical idea of the concept of agency.

The Argentine Parliament recently passed the New Equal Marriage Act for same-sex couples, making Argentina the first country in Latin America to legalize this type of union. This act represents a victory for a group historically discriminated for its sexual preferences and until then absent from the national legislation. In this context, in appearance so favourable to sexual equality, I believe this new law does not match the sexual order that today regulates the bodies of Argentine women. As from 1920 abortion is illegal in Argentina and it is reckoned as a crime against human life. Nevertheless, abortion is still the major cause of death among women in this country. Given this situation, in this article I will analyze the gap I find between homosexual and reproductive politics in the country. Unlike Europe, where reproductive rights preceded homosexual rights, in Argentina the opposite situation is observed. In this country, the legal recognition of same sex couples matches measures taken by other democracies and aimed at reaching what certain authors call sexual citizenship. Nevertheless, as long as Argentina does not recognize the right to free and safe abortion, this notion, which legitimates the universal applicability of sexual rights, will continue to be problematic. I believe that without the right of self-ownership, which comprehends sexual freedom and the right to decide to terminate a pregnancy, in the current Argentine context the gay marriage act represents an isolated event.

    Cid Aguayo, Beatriz Eugenia

The Chilean salmon industry processing plants demand important amounts of female labour-force on the ground of naturalized attributed female gender characteristics, such as nimble fingers and particularly, lower union participation. However, in a context of high labour conflict and in response to precarious labour condition, important female leaderships have emerged. This work analyzes, on the one hand, the salmon unions, and their capacity to include gender issues, and, on the other hand, aspects of the subjectivity and speeches of the emergent women leaders. I will argue that female leaders do no fragment their personal experience, but organized their subjectivity in an integrated but also stressed way, on the one hand mothering their trade union activity, and on the other, politicizing their private life.

In this paper I seek to examine ways of women mobilization in a working class Housing Cooperative. The cooperative under study had financial and technical support from an NGO, which helped to organize it through family workforce for self-construction. The cooperative proposed as a new form of political and economic organization of society invests in the power of collective articulation accumulated in the history of the working classes. When updating important socio-cultural principles, like the spirit of solidarity and articulation of the sociability network, the women members began to participate in traditionally masculine tasks and to exercise a subtle and creative leadership, giving a specific sense of collectiveness to the group of families.

In this article, we bring to the fore some changes of women corporal practices that we have identified through the analysis of models of domesticity we found on issues of the popular magazine Casa & Jardim, printed from the end of the 1960s to the mid 1970s. We want to emphasize the appropriation of Pop language in the decoration of Brazilian domestic interiors as one of the facets of youth culture, which diffused internationally during the 1960s. Aligned with feminist ideas, revolutions of behaviors, and iconoclast attitudes of the youth of the time, Pop spaces have embodied new forms of mediation among people and artifacts and also have contributed to the transformation of corporal schemata, indeed associated with the representations of femininity.
  • Revendo estereótipos: o papel dos homens no trabalho doméstico Artigos

Bruschini, Maria Cristina Aranha; Ricoldi, Arlene Martinez

This article presents the findings which emerged from a research about the male participation in household tasks, in the family daily activities and in infants care. The procedures in this research included both qualitative and quantitative techniques. The first step (qualitative) consisted of exploratory interviews and debates with groups of males receiving a family income below 5 minimum wages that had children of 14 years of age or younger, by means of focus groups. In the second step (quantitative), we studied secondary information about the male participation in the "household tasks" and the time spent in those activities by means of data extracted from the PNAD/IBGE database of 2006.
