Resumen Este artículo plantea una agenda de investigación sobre el establecimiento de las culturas psi en América Latina. Comienza analizando algunos debates sobre la naturaleza del psicoanálisis ubicado entre las ciencias, la filosofía, y el sentido común. Se argumenta que es necesario problematizar el lugar de las culturas psi como emergentes de la modernidad en un espacio cultural como América Latina, donde el concepto mismo de modernidad es bien diferente del de los países centrales.

Abstract This article lays out an agenda for research on the establishment of psy cultures in Latin America. It begins by analyzing some of the debates on the nature of psychoanalysis, a discipline located between the sciences, philosophy and common sense. It argues that the place of psy cultures needs to be problematized as emerging out of modernity in a cultural space like Latin America, where the very concept of modernity differs greatly from that of central countries.

Resumo Trata-se de apresentar um quadro ao mesmo tempo abrangente e sintético da circulação dos saberes e práticas da psicanálise nas ciências sociais, com ênfase na antropologia. Exploram-se os diferentes contextos em que os conceitos e concepções da psicanálise foram lidos, recusados ou apropriados pelas escolas de pensamento e tradições intelectuais nacionais, assim como as formas pelas quais a própria psicanálise dialogou com o conhecimento antropológico e com suas incorporações do conhecimento psicanalítico. Faz-se referência às interpretações desses dois grandes grupos de saber como partícipes de um comum horizonte cultural e comum orientação epistemológica, tanto quanto às fontes dos frequentes equívocos ocorrentes em seus diálogos.

Abstract A concise but broad-based review is presented of the circulation of knowledge and practices from psychoanalysis in the social sciences, especially anthropology. The different contexts in which the concepts and conceptions of psychoanalysis have been read, refuted, or appropriated by different national schools of thought and intellectual traditions and the ways psychoanalysis itself has interacted with anthropological knowledge and its incorporations of psychoanalytical knowledge are explored. The interpretations of these two major groups of knowledge are referred to as participating in a common cultural horizon with a common epistemological orientation, and the sources of the frequent mistaken beliefs occurring in this interplay are also addressed.

Resumo O ensaio apresenta a situação atual das culturas psi na Colômbia. Demonstrase como o sistema de saúde oficial do país fez da psiquiatria biomédica e da psicologia cognitivo-comportamental a cultura psi dominante e hegemônica. No entanto, longe de serem hegemônicas, como apresentadas, essa dupla estimula e sustenta a existência de diversos sistemas e práticas terapêuticas “religiosas” ou “sagradas” que desnaturalizam o sofrimento humano existencial e psicológico. Em geral são práticas rituais com forte conteúdo espiritualista, antimaterialista e antimonista, que abordam livremente um conjunto diverso de cosmologias, crenças e símbolos, incluindo até noções e práticas de origem biomédica. O resultado é uma hiper-ritualização da vida cotidiana no país.

Abstract This paper exposes the status of psy cultures in Colombia. It is shown how the country's official health system has transformed biomedical psychiatry and cognitive behavioral psychology into the dominant and hegemonic psy culture. However, far from being hegemonic, as presented, both serve to foster and sustain the existence of different “religious” or “sacred” therapeutic systems and practices that denaturalize human existential and psychological suffering. In general, the latter are ritual practices with a strong spiritualist, anti-materialist and antimonist content, that deal freely with a wide range of cosmologies, beliefs and symbols, even including the same concepts and practices of a biomedical origin. The result is a hyper-ritualization of daily life in the country.

Resumen En este artículo se estudian los vínculos entre psicoanálisis y transición democrática en España. Se abordan los fuertes cambios que caracterizaron la circulación del psicoanálisis durante los años que siguieron la muerte de Franco, en particular la aparición del movimiento lacaniano, su presencia en la esfera sociocultural y, en términos más amplios, el papel que desempeñó este fenómeno en la reemergencia del psicoanálisis como objeto cultural en el país. Asimismo, se analizan los factores vinculados con la historia del psicoanálisis durante la dictadura franquista que, junto con la llegada de Oscar Masotta y numerosos analistas argentinos a España, contribuyen a explicar el nuevo panorama psicoanalítico que se creó durante la transición.

Abstract This article studies the links between psychoanalysis and the transition to democracy in Spain. It examines the major changes that characterized the spread of psychoanalysis in the years after Franco's death, in particular the rise of the Lacanian movement, the impact of this phenomenon on the sociocultural sphere and, in broader terms, its role in the re-emergence of psychoanalysis as a cultural object in the country. The article also analyzes factors linked to the history of psychoanalysis during the Franco dictatorship; factors that, together with the arrival of Oscar Masotta and numerous Argentinian analysts in Spain, help explain the new vision of the field that emerged during the transition.

Resumo O artigo analisa a posição das sociedades psicanalíticas e dos psicanalistas brasileiros afiliados à International Psychoanalytical Association durante a ditadura militar na década de 1970. Mostra que se trata do momento de expansão da doutrina, caracterizado por forte investimento na clínica privada e consequente “afastamento” da doutrina do universo social. Por meio dos discursos de algumas personalidades significativas desse movimento, procura mostrar como, apoiados na noção de “neutralidade”, de primazia da realidade interna em detrimento da realidade externa e de investimento no “aqui e agora” do setting, esses psicanalistas optaram por um esvaziamento da psicanálise do espaço da política. Conclui lançando argumentos que sustentam a importância da implicação desse profissional na polis.

Abstract This article examines the position of psychanalytical societies and Brazilian psychoanalysts affiliated to the International Psychoanalytical Association during the military dictatorship in the 1970s. It shows that the period was a time of extended ideas, featuring a large investment in private clinics and a resulting “marginalization” of the social universe doctrine. Through the writings of certain important members of the movement, it seeks to show how, based on the notions of “neutrality”, of the primacy of internal reality to the detriment of external reality, and of investment in the “here and now” of the setting, these psychoanalysts chose to allow psychoanalysis to be divorced from politics. It concludes with arguments in support of the importance of the involvement of such professionals in political society.

Resumo O artigo apresenta brevemente os papéis de Budapeste, Praga e Belgrado no desenvolvimento do movimento psicoanalítico na Europa central antes da Segunda Guerra Mundial. Mapeando essa herança histórica, o artigo sugere como psicanalistas do antigo bloco soviético puderam restaurar suas próprias comunidades psicoanalíticas. O estudo investiga as consequências desses regimes ditatoriais e autoritários para a psicanálise e para os psicanalistas focalizando as semelhanças e diferenças na Hungria e nas antigas Tchecoslováquia e Iugoslávia. Além disso, destaca a contribuição das organizações profissionais internacionais – a International Psychoanalytic Association e a European Psychoanalytic Federation – na reintegração de Budapeste, Praga e Belgrado à comunidade psicoanalítica internacional.

Abstract The paper shortly presents the early roles of Budapest, Prague, and Belgrade in the development of psychoanalytic movement in Central-Europe before the Second World War. Mapping this historical heritage, it suggests how psychoanalysts of former Soviet Bloc countries could restore their own psychoanalytic communities. The study investigates the consequences of these dictatorial and authoritarian regimes for psychoanalysis and for psychoanalysts focusing on similarities and differences in Hungary, in former Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia. Furthermore, it emphasizes the contribution of the international professional organizations - the International Psychoanalytic Association, and the European Psychoanalytic Federation - for reintegration of Budapest, Prague, and Belgrade to the international psychoanalytic community.

Resumo Durante os anos 1960, a psicanálise experimentou uma expansão notável na Itália. Um dos cenários da crescente difusão de teorias psicanalíticas foi o mundo de marketing e sociologia do consumo. Com base no caso do sociólogo Francesco Alberoni, podemos examinar o impacto das teorias de Melanie Klein para entender o comportamento dos consumidores. Da mesma forma, o “caso Alberoni” serve para observar as preocupações e incertezas sobre a modernização social na Itália e também para perguntar sobre as especificidades da crescente importância da psicanálise na Itália na década de 1960.

Abstract Psychoanalysis experienced a remarkable boom in 1960s Italy. One of the areas where psychoanalytic theory disseminated was the world of marketing and the sociology of consumption. Based on the case of the sociologist Francesco Alberoni, we can examine the impact of the theories of Melanie Klein for understanding the behavior of consumers. Similarly, Alberoni's work shows the concerns and uncertainties on the social modernization of Italy, and also raises questions on the specificities of the growing importance of psychoanalysis in Italy in the 1960s.

Resumen El trabajo aborda la circulación e implantación temprana en los circuitos masivos de la sociedad chilena de principios del siglo XX, recuperando las primeras menciones de Sigmund Freud en los medios de comunicación chilenos, la oferta de cursos de autoayuda en clave freudiana, la aparición del personaje del psicoanalista en algunas novelas de fantasía y los cursos abiertos sobre psicoanálisis que dictaba el primer juez de menores de Santiago, el abogado Samuel Gajardo Contreras. Se profundiza en las expectativas que se proyectaron en el freudismo por parte de las elites chilenas y cómo las teorías de Freud ayudaron a repensar la infancia, la familia y la vida emocional en Chile durante el periodo de 1920-1950.

Abstract This article deals with the circulation and early spread of Freudianism in mass culture in Chilean society at the turn of the twentieth century. It documents the first references to Sigmund Freud in the Chilean media, the announcement of Freudian-style self-help classes, the appearance of psychoanalysts as characters in some fantasy novels, and the open lectures on psychoanalysis given by the first juvenile court judge in Santiago, the lawyer Samuel Gajardo Contreras. It explores the expectations projected onto Freudianism by the Chilean elite, and how Freud's theories contributed to a rethinking of childhood, the family and emotional life in Chile from 1920-1950.

Resumo “Psicanálise versus psiquiatria”, “inconsciente versus cérebro”, oposições clássicas entre diferentes perspectivas sobre o ser humano e o sofrimento mental. O artigo recupera alguns elementos dessa discussão e reflete sobre as formas como novas ideias sobre o cérebro e a biologia favorecem uma aproximação entre a psicanálise e as neurociências. Essas questões são redefinidas a partir da noção de “plasticidade cerebral”, que coloca o cérebro em um espaço aberto à interação com o ambiente social e à influência terapêutica do dispositivo psicanalítico. Conceber o cérebro como um órgão plástico permite pensar uma interseção entre a psicanálise e as neurociências.

Abstract “Psychoanalysis versus psychiatry” and “unconscious versus brain” are classic oppositions between different perspectives on the human being and mental suffering. This article draws on certain elements of this discussion and reflects on how new ideas about the brain and biology favor closer interaction between psychoanalysis and the neurosciences. These questions are redefined through the notion of cerebral plasticity, by which the brain is open to interaction with the social environment and the influence of psychoanalytical therapy. Conceiving of the brain as a plastic organ allows for the possibility of interchange between psychoanalysis and the neurosciences.

Resumo O artigo examina a passagem de uma compreensão psicológica da pessoa para uma compreensão somática/cerebral. A discussão centra-se na dualidade que marca a cultura ocidental moderna, entre a visão iluminista e racionalista do mundo e a visão chamada de romântica. Busca demonstrar como o fisicalismo sustenta-se em uma reconfiguração da “tensão inarredável”, referida por L.F. Duarte, entre essas duas visões. Parte de exemplos nos quais intervenções biotecnológicas se articulam a forte investimento afetivo e emocional de experiências corporais, propõe a noção de um “vitalismo” contemporâneo, no qual a categoria “vida” é entendida como algo que, embora ancorado na materialidade biológica, a ultrapassa, articulando-se a categorias fluidas como “felicidade” e “bem-estar” ou a sentimentos e emoções pouco passíveis de definição objetiva.

Abstract This exploration of the shift from a psychological understanding of the self to a somatic/cerebral one centers on the duality between the Enlightened, rationalist worldview and the so-called Romantic worldview, characteristic of modern Western culture. The discussion seeks to show how physicalism draws support from a reframing of what L.F. Duarte has called a “relentless tension” between these two worldviews. It finds basis in examples where biotechnological interventions are linked to heavy affective, emotional investment in bodily experiences and puts forward the notion of a contemporary “vitalism,” where the category “life” is understood as something that, while anchored in biological materialism, moves beyond it, meshing with fluid categories like happiness and well-being or with feelings and emotions that resist objective definition.

Resumo A nota de pesquisa apresenta considerações sobre a recepção da teoria psicanalítica, antes dessa se tornar uma ferramenta científica institucionalizada, pelos médicos psiquiatras no Rio de Janeiro nas primeiras décadas do século XX. Para compreender os contornos de tal recepção, analisa, do ponto de vista da circulação do conhecimento científico e do processo adaptativo ao contexto local, como as leituras que os psiquiatras faziam da teoria psicanalítica se inseriam nas teorias e pressupostos científicos então vigentes, inicialmente nos debates sobre as categorias histeria e nervosismo. Propõe ainda que seja aprofundada a contribuição da teoria psicanalítica para outras discussões da época, como sexualidade e doenças nervosas.

Abstract The research note presents the initial reception of psychoanalytic theory by psychiatric physicians in Rio de Janeiro in the first decades of the twentieth century before it became an institutionalized scientific tool. To understand the specificities of its reception, it examines, from the standpoint of the circulation of scientific knowledge and the process of adaptation to the local context, how the perceptions of psychiatrists regarding psychoanalytic theory were embedded in the then prevailing scientific theories and assumptions, initially in the dabates on the hysteria and nervousness categories. It also suggests that psychoanalytic theory should be used to deeply understand other debates of the time, such as sexuality and nervous diseases.
