O trabalho visa refletir sobre os problemas específicos ligados à tradução de literatura oral à luz das teorias de análise centrada no discurso, performance e tradução poética. Até os últimos trinta anos, textos orais, incluindo tais gêneros como mito, folclore, lenda, e conto de fada, foram analisados como textos fixos, sem considerar os mecanismos poéticos que marcam a narração oral. Este trabalho explora estas teorias e debates atuais sobre a perspectiva dos textos orais como emergente através de performances culturais específicas e com elementos estéticos que devem ser incluídos na transcrição e tradução de tais narrativas. Esta discussão sobre a tradução das narrativas orais é paralela às discussões gerais na antropologia sobre a escrita antropológica e a fixação da interação social.

The work pretends to review specific problems linked with the translation of oral literature in view of the theories of discourse centered analysis, performance and poetic translation. Up until the last 30 years, oral texts, including such genres of mythology, folklore, legends, were treated as fixed texts, without consideration of the poetic mechanisms that mark the oral narration. The work reviews the current theories and problems under debate, which view texts as emerging through specific cultural performances and with specific aesthetic markers that must be included in transcribing and translating such texts. The problem of translation of narrative parallels the general discussions in anthropology about anthropological writing and the fixation of social interaction.

Para a análise das entrevistas biográficas propõe-se uma mediação com a elaboração de descrições denominadas “si mesmos”. Mediante elas provocamos a identidade narrativa que se expõe ao enunciar-se no ato discursivo. A trama do si narrado é retomado pelo nosso programa narrativo enquanto interpretantes daquele. Implicam-se questões epistemológicas e teóricas por (re)apresentar nossos entrevistados/as como particulares de base, corpo e subjetividade, e por tomar distância dos tipos ideais ou outras codificações na análise e ordenamento de textos baseados em entrevistas abertas. Nossas descrições narrativas reapropriam-se do agente em sua própria deliberação e autodesignação carregando-nos na exposição do material da duplicidade referencial e reflexiva da linguagem. A inclusão dos si mesmos transita essa duplicidade com a intenção de contribuir na perspectiva do ator mediada pela situação de interlocução. A referência identificante não é só uma designação do sujeito a si mesmo mas também uma relação de interlocução que inclui o destinatário, co-participante da semantização e da autodesignação. Resulta legítimo tematizar a partir do investigador aquela referência identificante significada desde cada objeto de estudo.

The study of social identities raises the need of mediating between which is individual and which is collective. Through a description called “self” we elicit the narrational identity – constructing itself during the open interview – in the enunciation of the speech act. The pattern woven by the narrated self is unfolded by our own narrative programme as its interpreters. Epistemological and theoretical topics are implicit when we (re)-present our interviewees as peculiars of base, body and subjectivity and when we move away from typifications or ideal types. Our “self” reappropiates the agent in his/her self-intentionality and self-designation, and takes the referencial and reflexion duplicity of language. The description of the selftransits that duplicity to give the actors perspective, built in the interlocutory situation. The identifyng reference is not only a subjects self-designation but an interlocutory relation as well, which includes the receptor as a co-participant in the semantic process and the referential allusion. It is argued for the legitimacy of the investigators turning that identifying reference into another aspect of his/her study object. The proposal sends to “Soi-meme comme un autre”, by Paul Ricoeur.

Este ensaio discorre sobre o atributo narrativo da imagem. Parte do pressuposto de que a imagem como discursiva em si, revela a intenção de um real como puramente dado, exterior aos códigos de apreensão do humano ato de sociabilidade. Busca compreender, enfim, por que, mesmo em época de uma interatividade intensa sobre a virtualidade dos objetos, onde a imagem passa a ser atributo de apreensões, modificações e visitações virtuais cada vez maiores, o código do real como objeto de apreciação do lugar de origem indiciário ainda permeia o pensamento sobre a imagem. Como se ela contivesse um discurso em e por si mesma, como originando primevos atos narrativos da ligação do homem com o homem e a natureza que o cerca.

This essay discourses on the narrative attribute of the image. The image is taking here as discursive in itself, discloses the intention of a real as purely given, exterior to the codes of apprehension of the human act of sociability. Fetching to understand, at last, why, exactly at time of an intense interactivity on the virtuality of objects, where the image starts to be virtual attribute of apprehensions, modifications and bigger virtual visitations, the code of the real as object of appreciation of the place of still as the origin the thought on the image. As if it contained a speech in and for same itself, as originating primevos narratives acts of the plugging of the man with the man and the nature.

Neste artigo, procuro desenvolver uma abordagem antropológica da narrativa como forma de interpretação da experiência individual e coletiva e como veículo de sentido. A discussão tem como pano de fundo um estudo sobre as novas culturas terapêuticas e religiosas no Brasil, em que são abordados a pessoa, sua experiência e os sentidos dados a essa experiência. A reflexão se debruça sobre duas formas de narrativa que emergiram na pesquisa de campo: as narrativas “terapêuticas” e as narrativas autobiográficas. A dimensão subjetiva e pessoal, marcante nas narrativas contadas pelos “filhos de Aquário” sobre seus itinerários espirituais, encontra no fluxo do conjunto das narrativas outra dimensão, aquela que fala da experiência e de seus sentidos sociais.

In this article I discuss an anthropological approach of narrative as a form of interpretation of collective and personal experience and as a vehicle of sense. The discussion has as backdrop a study about new religious and therapeutic cultures in Brazil, where we approach the person, her experience and meanings of these experiences. The reflection is based in two forms of narrative that has arisen from the fieldwork: therapeutic and autobiographical narratives. The personal dimension, central in narratives related by “Aquarius children” about their spiritual itineraries, found in the middle of the narratives, another dimension: that one who speaks about the experience and their social meanings.

Toda representação de uma paisagem inclui uma narrativa sobre as marcas nela inscritas pelo povo que a habita. O discurso sobre os cenários da nação é sempre discurso sobre a história. O cinema contemporâneo, cumprindo com o papel que antes preenchera a pintura histórica e o paisagismo, rende-se também a essa premissa. Assim, a paisagem que serve de cenário à filmografia argentina contemporânea tem, no horizonte, uma fronteira sempre descrita como intransponível. Este tema da claustrofobia inerente à paisagem nacional coincide com o de outros discursos de “busca do outro lado “ por uma abertura de respiração e renovação, como, por exemplo, o dos agentes que re-introduziram na argentina, a partir dos anos 60, a religião africana a partir do Brasil.

Any representation of a landscape includes a narrative about the imprints left by its inhabitants on it. Discourse on the scenarios of the nation is always discourse on history. The cinema of our days, fulfilling the role of historical painting and landscape painting in the past, yields to this principle as well. Therefore, the landscape that serves as scenario for the contemporary Argentine filmography has, at its horizon, a frontier always described as an unsurpassable barrier. This theme of claustrophobia as inhering in a national landscape coincides with other discourses of a “search on the other side” for a breathing escape and a renewal, as, for example, that of the agents who re-introduced the African religion in Argentina, since the 60’, importing it from Brazil.

Este artigo examina algumas possibilidades de interpretação comparada de textos literários e performance, como forma de ampliar o repertório temático da antropologia. Tal investigação se situa nas fronteiras entre antropologia, história e literatura comparada. Compreendendo a interpretação como urna forma de diálogo, parto do aspecto reflexivo das obras de arte, da noção de performance simultaneamente como ato e modo de utilização da linguagem e da problemática da contextualização – incluindo as relações entre contexto da situação, história e cultura – na análise das relações entre literatura romântica e tradições orais camponesas, no contexto da poesia épica finlandesa.

This article examines some possibilities of comparative interpretation of literary texts and performance, as a means to expand anthropology’s thematic repertoire. The inquirys located in the borders among anthropology, history and comparative literature. Understanding interpretation as a kind of dialogue, take in account the reflexive dimension of the works of art, the notion of performance as both act and way of utilizing language, and the problems of context – including the relations among the context of the situation, history and culture – at the analysis of the relationship between romanticist literature and peasant oral tradition, in the specific context of Fnnish epic poetry.

Este artigo analisa os debates sobre histórias de vida que antecederam e sucederam as discussões sobre a virada linguística nas ciências sociais, principalmente na tradição antropológica. O artigo argumenta que o feminismo pós-estruturalista, ao reapropriar-se teórica, metodológica e politicamente das histórias de vida, representou importante intervenção nos “textos” sociais e culturais disponíveis às mulheres na construção de seus relatos de vida e de suas subjetividades.

This paper retraces the debates on life-histories before and after the linguistic turn in the social sciences, and, more specifically, in the anthropological tradition. It stresses how poststructuralist feminist methodological, theoretical, and political appropriations of personal narratives represent a significant textual intervention in the gendered social-cultural scripts of women’s lives.

O presente trabalho constitui uma intenção interdisciplinar de reflexão sobre o uso e potencialidades da história de vida como fonte geradora de dados qualitativos. Elas proporcionam os dados necessários para vincular as práticas migratórias dos estudantes que ingressam na Universidade Nacional de Mar del Plata (Argentina) com suas representações profissionais e de consumo cultural enquanto orientadoras da tomada de decisões para empreender uma mobilidade urbano-territorial. Entendemos as representações como os modos nos quais os estudantes interpretam e pensam a realidade segundo a posição que ocupam neste espaço social e que funcionam como orientadoras de seus comportamentos. A instrumentação de histórias de vida nos possibilitará compreender como se constroem as representações, que conteúdos a conformam e que funções cumprem, através do modo em que os próprios migrantes vivem as condições objetivas e constroem o mundo pelo qual tem transcorrido seu ciclo de vida e que os tem levado, em determinado momento, à decisão de migrar.

The present work sets up an interdisciplinary attempt of reflection about use and potentialities of life history as generative source of qualitative information. They give necessary information to connect migratory performances of students that enter into Mar del Plata’s National University (Argentina) with their profesional representation and their cultural consumption as a guide to make decisions to begin on an urban territorial mobility. We understand the representation as the ways that students know and think the reality according to the position they occupy in the social space and they work as a guide of their behavior. Life story instrumentation will give us the possibility to understand how the representations are built, which is their conformation and which functions they fulfill, through the way the migrant themselves live the objetive conditions and build the world in which their life cicles have been gone by and, in a specific moment, they have been led to the migrate’s decision.

O artigo analisa a narrativa de uma entrevista feita com Anita Xavier da Costa, filha de Francisco Xavier da Costa (1871-1934), pioneiro na difusão de idéias socialistas no Rio Grande do Sul. Três aspectos são enfatizados: a maneira como a depoente busca construir uma coerência retrospectiva para a trajetória de seu pai, o condicionamento de gênero de suas memórias e o processo que fez com que ela assumisse a função de “guardiã da memória” de Francisco.

The article examines the narrative in an interview with Anita Xavier da Costa, the daughter of Francisco Xavier da Costa (1871-1934), a pioneer in the dissemination of socialist ideas in Rio Grande do Sul. Three aspects are underscored: the way the deponent seeks to build a consistent retrospect of her father’s life, the gender conditioning of her memories and the process which has made her to take the role of “guardian of Francisco’s memory”.

Este artigo discute as experiências da vida de um curador afro-descendente, a partir de fragmentos biográficos iniciais, escritos do seu próprio punho e intitulada “Entrada em vida de sofrimento e amargura”. Retornando à tradição antropológica de análise de narrativas e buscando aplicar a proposta de leitura etnocrítica, interpretamos seu discurso para compreender a) sua estratégia narrativa, b) a técnica de construção do texto e c) os significados contextuais do seu discurso, elaborado para reforçar sua condição de sofredor, que constitui o elemento recorrente, a partir do qual ele formula para si uma explicação para sua “sina” de lidar com os sofrimentos e a dor de outrem.

This article discusses the life experiences of an afro-descendent medicine man, based on fragments of his early biography, hand written by himself and named “Entry into a life of suffering and bitterness”. Returning to the anthropological tradition on the study of narratives, and aiming to apply an ethnocritical approach to the reading of the narrative, we have interpreted his discourse in order to understand a) his narrative strategy, b) the technique of text construction and c) the contextual meanings of his discourse, elaborated to reinforce his condition of being a sufferer, and that constitutes the recurring element, out of which he formulates his explanation for his “fate” of healing other peoples suffering and pain.

O artigo comporta sobre a apresentação e comentários de urna entrevista com um jovem homem de 20 anos que fala de sua sexualidade. O texto é fundado sobre uma discussão do livro do antropólogo americano Gilbert Herdt e do psicanalista Robert Stoller que desenvolve um conceito de etnografia clínica. O texto coloca em evidências as dificuldades à aceder à subjetividade como forma de interiorização da cultura através das experiências biográficas. O método de entrevista aberto não estruturada é discutida no final do artigo.

L’article porte sur la présentation et le commentaire d’un entretien biographique avec un jeune homme de 20 ans qui parle de sa sexualité. Le texte est fondé sur une discussion du livre de l’anthropologue américain Gilbert Herdt et du psychanalyste Robert Stoller qui développe le concept « d’ethnographie clinique ». Le texte met en évidence les difficultés à accéder à la subjectivité comme forme d’intériorisation de la culture au travers des expériences biographiques. La méthode de l’entretien ouvert non structuré est discutée en find d’article.

O estudo da literatura oral, que durante muito tempo apaixonou os folcloristas e os historiadores, ficou fora dos grandes questionamentos antropológicos, Hoje, com o surgimento das investigações sobre memória, aparecem, durante o exercício da rememoração, narrativas multiformes, difíceis de serem manipuladas pelo pesquisador – que muitas vezes as ignoram. A reflexão que propomos aqui visa levantar problemas ligados aos aspectos teórico-metodológicos da análise das formas narrativas numa perspectiva antropológica. Pensamos que a análise comparada dos textos da tradição oral e dos resultados da pesquisa etnográfica, permite descrever os pontos fortes da cultura estudada.

The study of the oral literature that for a long time attracted the love of the folklorists and historians was left aside of the big anthropological questionings. Nowadays, with the emergence of the studies about memory, there appear, during the practice of the re-memorisation, multiform narratives difficult to be manipulated by the researcher, who, most of the time, neglect them. The reflection here proposed aims to rise problems linked to the theoretic-methodological aspects of the analysis of the narrative forms in an anthropological perspective. We believe that the compared analysis of the texts of the oral tradition and the results of the ethnographic research, allow to describe the strengths of the studied culture.

Num contexto onde a tradição oral se faz tão presente como na região da Campanha do Rio Grande do Sul, fronteira com Argentina e Uruguai, a observação das performances dos contadores de “causos” permite a consideração de que estas estão inseridas num complexo evento narrativo (Bauman, 1989), onde os diferentes contadores incorporam e reproduzem (incorporated knowledge – Hastrup, 1994), na sua ação mesma de contar, aspectos da memória do grupo. Esta memória revela-se não apenas nos termos do conteúdo das narrativas – no imaginário referido – mas através da própria vocalização e ação corporal intrínsecas à transmissão destas narrativas (Zumthor, 1993, 1997). Para analisar a performance destes contadores através da relação entre memória e corporalidade, elegi quatro caminhos. O primeiro busca identificar de que maneira o intercâmbio cultural característico desta que é uma região de fronteira se manifesta no corpo e na voz dos contadores. O segundo caminho diz respeito à formação do corpo dos contadores no seu trabalho cotidiano. O terceiro viés de análise busca a relação entre a corporalidade e o meio (a paisagem) e o último depara a constituição da corporalidade dos contadores de causo a partir da uma experiência histórica marcante na região, a das guerras.

In a context where the oral tradition is so present as at Rio Grande do Sul Campaign, Argentina and Uruguai boarders, the observation of the performance of tellers of “causos” allows the consideration that they are inserted in a complex narrative event (Bauman, 1989), where the different tellers incorporate and reproduce (incorporated knowlewdge – Harstrup, 1994), in action itself of telling, the group memory aspects. This memory comes up not only in terms of the narrative contents — in the referred imaginary – but through their own corporal intrinsic vocalization and action to the transmission of those narratives (Zumthor, 1993, 1997). To analyse the performance of those tellers through the relationship between memory and corporeality, I was selected four ways. The first one seeks to identify in which way the characterized cultural interchange of this that is a border region which is manifested in the body and voice of the tellers. The second way is regarded to tellers body formation in their everyday work. The third analyze seeks the relations between the corporeality and environment (landscape) and the last one shows the tellers corporeality constitution of the cases from the historical experience emphasized in the region and in the war.

O desiderato central deste curto ensaio situa-se na análise crítica a que submeto a tendência dos estudiosos brasileiros e estrangeiros a adotarem, no exame da produção simbólica expressa nas narrativas populares em verso, o procedimento classificatório por “ciclos temáticos”. É procedimento equivocado antes de tudo na sua própria lógica interna, mas também na exigência não atendida de conhecimento extensivo do universo do corpus dessa literatura, procedimento que introduz muito mais a perspectiva de cada classificador do que o conteúdo narrativo dos materiais a que se aplica. Além disso, esvazia essa produção simbólica da dimensão histórico-cultural essencial no seu processo de produção, redundando na recorrência da mesmice. Finalmente, formulo a hipótese de trabalho segundo a qual a via de superação desse impasse reside na proposição de uma hermenêutica mais fecunda que encare esse corpus numa periodização de perfil nitidamente histórica.

The central objective of this short essay is a critical analysis regarding the tendency of Brazilian and foreign scholars alike of their analysis of symbolic production as expressed in popular verse narratives, a classificatory procedure referred to as “thematic cycles”. It is a mistaken procedure not only in its own internal logic but also in the unanswered demand for an extensive knowledge of the universe of the corpus of this literature, a procedure that introduces the perspective of each classifier much more than the narrative content of the materials over which it is applied. In addition, it empties this symbolic production of its essential historic-cultural dimension in its process of production, resulting in the recurrence of sameness. Finally, 1 formulate a working hypothesis according to which the way to overcome this deadlock resides in the proposition of a more productive hermeneutic that may face this corpus in a periodicity of a clearly historic profile.

Não mais do que “impressões”, este texto, sem pretensões científicas, imagina dar conta a um eventual leitor dos pensamentos oferecidos ao próprio autor pela rica experiência de uma cidade (e de um país) fascinante, autêntico laboratório onde a transmutação de passados sucessivos em memória viva evidencia o processo de construção alquímica de um presente histórico. Não se trata de afirmações, mas de sugestões avulsas, que se sabem subjetivas mas assim mesmo capazes – quem sabe – de encetar um diálogo.

Only “impressions” is what this text, which has no scientific pretensions, intends to give to any possible reader of the rich experience and the thoughts originated from the author’s observations of the life in a Russian city, and of the country as well. Russia is a fascinating place, a living laboratory, where all the transformations of a complex past led to the construction of a historical present. This text should not be considered as a roll of definite concepts rather than a suggestion to provide a debate about them.
