Como poderia ser uma antropologia da Internet? Uma tal antropologia exigiria uma combinação de introspecção, de opiniões pessoais e de história mundial para se explorar o universo do ciberespaço. Afinal, esse mundo não é um mundo auto-suficiente, nem mesmo esse é "um mundo". As pessoas carregam consigo suas circunstâncias off-line para junto do seu comportamento on-line. Constitui-se uma dialética do virtual e do real, na qual nenhuma das duas partes pode ser reduzida à outra e na qual a "realidade virtual" é a sua síntese temporária. A metafísica heideggeriana é aqui acionada para esclarecer melhor essa dialética. Antes disso, entretanto, a Internet é examinada sob a luz da história das comunicações, desde a fala e a escrita de livros até o rádio. A revolução digital de nosso tempo está marcada pela convergência da telefonia, da televisão e da computação. É a terceira etapa em uma revolução das máquinas, que começou há apenas 200 anos. O presente artigo analisa a economia política da Internet em termos das três classes originais, controlando respectivamente um aumento no ambiente (terra), dinheiro (capital) e criatividade humana (força de trabalho). O artigo finaliza com uma consideração de um grande exemplo dado por Kant, de uma antropologia futura capaz de situar a subjetividade humana em uma história mundial.

What might an anthropology of the internet look like? It require a combination of introspection, personal judgment and world history to explore the universe of cyberspace. This world is not sufficient to itself, nor is it 'the world'. People bring their offline circumstances to behaviour online. The virtual and the real constitute a dialectic in which neither can be reduced to the other and 'virtual reality' is their temporary synthesis. Heidegger's metaphysics are drawn on to illuminate this dialectic. Before this, the internet is examines in the light of the history of communications, from speech and writing to books and the radio. The digital revolution of our time is marked by the convergence of telephones, television and computing. It is the third stage in a machine revolution lasting just 200 years. The paper analyses the political economy of the internet in terms of the original three classes controlling respectively increase in the environment (land), money (capital) and human creativity (labour). It ends with a consideration of Kant's great example for a future anthropology capable of placing human subjectivity in world history.

O presente artigo questiona pressupostos sobre a distinção, comum na pesquisa de Internet, entre on-line e off-line. Várias pesquisas presumiram a "virtualidade", bem como uma forte divisão entre o on-line e o off-line como sendo um dado e um ponto de partida metodológico e analítico em pesquisa. Argumentamos que quando se aborda o uso de fato da Internet a partir de uma abordagem etnográfica, uma tal distinção se revela como um feito social altamente contingente: alguns atores empregam grandes habilidades para estabelecer uma distinção clara entre on-line e off-line em suas práticas de Internet; em outros, tal distinção não tem sentido, ou não é desejável, e tais distinções não são de fato estabelecidas. Utilizamos uma comparação entre cibercafés em Trinidad para demonstrar essa variabilidade e a ampla gama de diferentes relações on-line/off-line que são realmente observadas. Nós relacionamos esse material com a questão mais geral de se estabelecer "contextos" na pesquisa etnográfica.

This article interrogates assumptions about the on-line/off-line distinction in internet research. Much research has presumed "virtuality" and a strong division between the on-line and the off-line as a methodological and analytical given and starting point for research. We argue that when actual internet use is approached from an ethnographic perspective, this distinction turns out to be a highly contingent social accomplishment: some actors deploy great skill to establish a sharp on-line/off-line distinction in their internet practices; for others, it is meaningless or undesirable and the distinctions is not established in reality. A comparison of cybercafes in Trinidad is used to demonstrate this variability and the wide range of different on-line/off-line relationships that are in fact observed. We relate this material to the overall issue of establishing "contexts" in ethnographic research.

Dado que o desenvolvimento das tecnologias de informação e de comunicação conhece um esplendor sem precedentes, inúmeros grupos autóctones se apropriam das possibilidades ofertadas pela mídia para projetar no mundo as representações originais de sua identidade de seu patrimônio cultural. Em Galiwin'ku ,na Terra de Arnhem australiana, os Yolngu se lançaram numa iniciativa ambiciosa, a de integrar o rom, a lei ancestral, a um projeto de arquivo cultural digital. As questões ligadas à organização e ao acesso do saber sobre o arquivo do Galiwin'ku Indigenous Knowledge Centre se articulam em torno dos modos tradicionais de transmissão dos conhecimentos através do gurrutu, a organização social clânica. Esta tensão entre a estrutura digital e a performance ritual permite uma reavaliação da disposição em redes dos saberes locais.

Alors que le développement des technologies de l'information et de la communication connaît un essor sans précédent, de nombreux groupes autochtones se saisissent des possibilités offertes par ces média pour projeter dans le monde des représentations originales de leur identité et de leur patrimoine culturel. A Galiwin'ku, en Terre d'Arnhem australienne, les Yolngu se sont lancés dans une initiative ambitieuse, celle d'intégrer le rom, la loi ancestrale, à un projet d'archive culturelle numérique. Les questions liées à l'organisation et à l'accès du savoir sur l'archive du Galiwin'ku Indigenous Knowledge Centre s'articulent autour des modes traditionnels de transmission des connaissances à travers le gurrutu, l'organisation sociale clanique. Cette tension entre la structure numérique et la performance rituelle permet une réévaluation de la mise en réseaux des savoirs locaux.

O artigo analisa algumas das implicações trazidas pelo crescente uso da comunicação mediada por computador no mundo contemporâneo. Analisa, também, a natureza do espaço social cibernético criado através dessa prática comunicacional, o chamado "ciberespaço". Como reflexão de fundo, essas análises são acompanhadas por uma discussão a respeito do processo de virtualização implicado tanto nas questões referentes à comunicação mediada por computador como às questões referentes ao ciberespaço.

The article analyzes some of the implications brought about by the increasing usage of computer-mediated communication in our contemporary world. It also analyzes the nature of the social cybernetic space created through such a communicative practice, the so-called "cyberspace." As background reflection, these analyses are accompanied by a discussion on the process of virtualization implied both in the questions relating to computer-mediated communication and in questions relating to the cyberspace.

Certas distinções transcendem o domínio do uso "nativo" e acabam sendo empregadas como categorias analíticas. A família das categorias baseadas na distinção entre tecnologia e sociedade é um bom exemplo desse fenômeno. Este artigo pretende levantar algumas questões quanto ao valor analítico de distinções tais como entre "cultura" e "tecnologia" a partir do caso de avatares, corpos virtuais empregados em ambientes de sociabilidade no ciberespaço. Para tanto, são utilizados os relatos etnográficos de duas circunstâncias de um grupo social on-line, onde o uso criativo de tecnologias e a intervenção nos seus contextos de criação dão suporte à noção de que muitas vezes as fronteiras entre pares dicotômicos, tais como "tecnologia" e "cultura", são indistintas.

Sometimes categories employed analytically are drawn from their "lay" use with a lack of further reflection on their appropriateness. The range of categories based in the distinction between technology and society is just an example of these phenomena. This paper brings to attention some issues regarding the analytical value of distinctions such as between culture and technology, taking avatars, virtual bodies employed at social environments in cyberspace, as an example. The ethnography of two aspects of an on-line social group illustrate how users of avatar-related technologies creatively shape those technologies features in order to made them suitable to their local cultural contexts. Furthermore, the relationship between users and developers of such technologies reveal in what extent the boundaries between technology and culture are, indeed, rather blurred.

Este texto visa debruçar-se sobre a relação homem/meio digital e sobre as possibilidades dessa interação. Partimos da seguinte questão, quais as chances dessa relação vir a ser um meio que apresente ferramentas de operação e criação, possibilitando a geração de novas informações, a partir daquelas já disponibilizadas em ambiente virtual, e um ciclo contínuo? Que possibilidades que existiriam de se criar informação a partir da operação com a visualização de dados, invertendo a relação de dependência que a representação tem sobre os dados que traduz. No que isto poderia vir a ampliar o fazer artístico.

This article points to the relationship between humans and information (database) in virtual collaborative environments and it questions about the possibilities that could come out from this interaction. If this can lead to a new process of creation based on the direct operation through the displayed information, feeding back the database, and, the aftermath that could reflect on the artistic work in the digital realm. What are the possibilities of creating, backwarding the process, from the manipulation of information back to the database.

O ciberespaço provoca uma revolução antropológica sem precedentes. O autor propõe que as tecnologias interativas nos fazem retornar a formas de comunicação próximas a rituais tribais e religiosos e suas lógicas de participação e pensamentos mágicos. As interações do cibercorpo geram uma zona de intervalo entre o corpo e as tecnologias. A ciberarte explora qualidades artísticas e estéticas das tecnologias interativas oferecendo momentos onde o corpo interfaceado habita limites entre o mundo real e virtual. Diferentes tipos e níveis de interatividade, o princípio da mutabilidade, do efêmero, do vir a ser, em processos que demandam reciprocidade, implicação, colaboração, partilhando informações no ciberespaço são propostos em dois recentes projetos artísticos relacionados à herança cultural de rituais.

Cyberspace provokes an unprecedented anthropological revolution. The author proposes that interactive technologies put back us into forms of communication closer to some tribal and religious rituals with their participative logics and magic thoughts. The cyberbody'interactions generate an interval zone, between body and technologies. Cyberart explores the aesthetic and artistic qualities of interactive technologies, offering moments where the interfaced body inhabits the limits between real and virtual worlds. Different kinds and levels of interactivity, the principle of mutability, of ephemeral, of come-into-being in process demanding reciprocity, collaboration, sharing information in cyberspace are proposed by commenting two recent artistic projects related to rituals and cultural heritage.

A teoria cibernética de Wiener, da década de 1940, originou pesquisas e influenciou vários campos científicos, incluindo a antropologia. Atualmente, a cibernética está praticamente esquecida como uma ciência, mas deixou importantes resíduos para a cultura. Esses resíduos, dentre outros provenientes do discurso técnico e cientifico, são meios criativos para as reavaliações do consenso social acerca dos significados das coisas. Resultados de um processo de reinvenção cultural, o ciborgue e o ciberespaço são referências emblemáticas de uma nova ordem do real que projeta o sistema antigo de interpretação da realidade sob novas formas, restringidas pelas dadas possibilidades históricas e culturais de significação.

The Wiener's cybernetics theory, from 1940's, has inspired researches and has influenced many scientific fields, including anthropology. Nowadays, the cybernetics is almost forgotten as a science but it has left important residues for the culture. These residues, amongst others from scientific and technical discourse, are creative means for the revaluations of social consensus about the meanings of things. As results of cultural process of reinvention, the cyborg and the cyberspace are emblematic references of a new order of real, which projects the old interpretational system of reality in new forms, constrained by its given historical and cultural possibilities of signification.

O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar o surgimento e consolidação do sistema operacional Linux em um contexto marcado pela hegemonia de sistemas operacionais comerciais, sendo o Windows/Microsoft o exemplo paradigmático. O idealizador do Linux optou por abrir o seu código-fonte e oferecê-lo, gratuitamente, na Internet. Desde então, pessoas de diversas partes do mundo têm participado do seu desenvolvimento. Busca-se, assim, através deste estudo, analisar as características desse espaço de sociabilidade, onde as trocas apontam para outra lógica que não a do mercado. A proposta de compreender os laços sociais no universo Linux, a partir da perspectiva da dádiva, acaba remetendo a outra discussão, que também merecerá atenção nesse estudo, qual seja: a atualidade da dádiva. Releituras de Mauss, feitas por Godbout e Caillé, indicam que a dádiva, em seu "sistema de transformações", encontra-se presente nas sociedades contemporâneas, mas não apenas nos interstícios sociais, conforme afirmava o próprio Mauss.

This work's goal is to analyze the appearance and consolidation of the Linux operational system in a context marked by the hegemony of commercial operational systems, taking the Windows/Microsoft as the paradigmatic example. The creator of Linux chose to make it open-source and offer it free of charge, in the Internet. Since then, people from the various parts of the world have participated in its development. This study, therefore, seeks to analyse the features of this space of sociability, where the exchange points to another logic different of that one adopted by the market. The proposal of comprehending the social ties of the Linux universe through the perspective of gift ends up sending us into another discussion, which will also deserve attention in this study, that would be: the recentness of gift. Re-interpretations of Mauss, made by Godbout and Caillé, indicate that gif, in its "changing system", is present in the contemporary societies, but not only in certain social occasions, like Mauss himself used to put it.

Artigo que apresenta uma reflexão sobre a estreita associação que atualmente se processa entre computador/Internet e condutas sociais. Um dos aspectos mais claros está relacionado ao cultivo de um tipo de sociabilidade que podemos denominar como sendo "virtual". Esse conceito surge do encontro de determinadas características. De um lado, temos a presença de práticas de sociabilidade ao "modo clássico", sendo mantida pelo encontro face a face. De outro, está presente a especificidade gerada por tal tecnologia: a presença da interface gráfica como mediador do encontro social.

Article that presents a reflection about the narrow association that now is processed between computer/Internet and social conducts. One of the clearest aspects is related to the cultivation of a sociability type that we can denominate as being "virtual". That concept appears of the encounter certain characteristics. On a side we have the presence of sociability practices to the "classic" way, being maintained by the encounter face to face. Of other, it is present the especific generated by such technology: the presence of the graphic interface as mediator of the social encounter.

A pesquisa apresenta uma experiência de etnografia e fotoetnografia com equipamento digital. Busca registrar as transformações por que passa uma comunidade rural e pesqueira pertencente a Viamão, na Grande Porto Alegre, RS, Brasil. Margeada pelo rio Guaíba (na verdade, lago) e pela lagoa dos Patos (na verdade, laguna), com a chegada do asfalto no ano de 2002 e a abertura à visitação de parque de reserva ambiental, a vila, chamada Vila de Itapuã, passou a atrair visitantes e a romper com o isolamento. Tal isolamento foi determinante para que na década de 1940 no local fosse construído o Hospital Colônia, uma prisão-tratamento para leprosos. A pesquisa busca registrar a cultura açoriana ali remanescente e, sobretudo, pensar o moderno que penetra o tradicional e todas as implicações desse entrelaçamento na construção de uma identidade local. Paralelamente à modernização que alcança o campo da investigação, a pesquisa também traz inovações metodológicas, ao testar e ampliar o uso da fotografia digital como um recurso para a fotoetnografia, discutir os seus recursos e limites e também os recursos da Internet, uma vez que o caderno de campo é publicado sistematicamente no site <A HREF="http://www.ufrgs.br/fotoetnografia">www.ufrgs.br/fotoetnografia</A>, no ar desde o mês de julho de 2003.

This research presents an ethnographic and photoethnographic experiment with digital equipment. The research aims to register the transformations through which a rural fishing community is going through, in Viamão, in the vicinities of Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil. The Vila, called Vila de Itapuã, is surrounded by the Guaíba river on one side and by the Patos lagoon on the other; in the year 2002 the paths to the Vila were asphalted and a wild life reserve park was opened, inviting visitors to end this Vila's isolation. The former isolation of the place was a fundamental reason for the establishment, in the 1940's, of the Colony Hospital, a prison-leprosarium. The present research registers the remaining Azorean culture and, above all, our goal is to think of the modern in relation to the traditional, with all the implications of such a relationship in the construction of a local identity. Running side by side with this modernizing process in the field, the present research also has methodological novelties, by testing and widening the uses of digital photography for photoethnography. We discuss these resources and their limits, as other resources, such as the internet, once our field notes are systematically published online at <A HREF="http://www.ufrgs.br/fotoetnografia">www.ufrgs.br/fotoetnografia</A>, since July 2003.

Este texto, preparado a partir de um convite para palestrar na abertura da sessão plenária da Associação Americana de História, em janeiro de 2001, refere-se à construção da narrativa histórica pelos antropólogos, e em particular na minha própria trajetória acadêmica. Trato rapidamente da crescente dedicação de antropólogos sobre questões de ética e de epistemologia e dos efeitos desses estudos sobre as estratégias narrativas. Este ensaio igualmente traz um breve panorama sobre minha própria experiência com o estudo das formas narrativas na história.

This text, prepared at the invitation of the American Historical Association for its opening plenary session in January 2001, concerns the construction of historical narrative by anthropologists, in particular myself. It quickly traces anthropologists' growing concerns with ethical and epistemological issues and the effects this has had on narrative strategies. And it provides a brief overview of my own experiments with narrative form in history, beginning with First-Time and Alabi's World, and ending with The Convict and the Colonel.
