Résumé La laïcité française a connu un tournant au cours des trente dernières années. La loi du 9 décembre 1905 avait établi une laïcité libérale. Ce modèle comportait une double face. D’abord, il établissait une séparation entre l’Etat et les cultes: le pouvoir ne pouvait désormais ni les reconnaître, ni les subventionner. Ensuite, il accordait aux religions une complète liberté d’organisation et de communication. Or, au cours de ces dernières décennies, la laïcité s’est reconfigurée. L’Etat a établi, d’une part, des dispositifs de reconnaissance inédits sur le terrain financier et symbolique; il a, d’autre part, introduit des mesures inédites de surveillance des cultes et de neutralisation de l’expression religieuse. On parle ici d’un « tournant substantialiste »: le gouvernement semble bien en effet vouloir s’ériger en garant d’une éthique sociale lourde, correspondant à ce que certains acteurs politiques et certains intellectuels nomment, depuis les années 1980, l’ « identité française ». Cette contribution entend analyser cette mutation en s’arrêtant sur l’enchaînement de trois phénomènes: la transformation des paysages religieux, l’évolution des discours politiques, la transformation des règles juridiques.

Abstract The French secularism knew a dramatic change during the last thirty years. The law of December 9th, 1905 had established a liberal secularism. This model contained a double face. Firstly, it established a separation between the State and the churches: the Government could not either recognize them, or subsidize them. Secondly, it granted to the religions a complete freedom of organization and communication. During these last decades, the secularism recomposed itself. The State established, on one hand, new devices of financial and symbolic recognition; it established, on the other hand, new measures of control of the churches and attempted to neutralize religious expressions in the public sphere. We speak here of a “substantialist turning point”: the Government seems indeed to set up itself as the promoter of a heavy social ethics, related to what some political leaders call the “French identity”. This contribution intends to analyze this transformation by exploring three phenomena: the transformation of the religious landscapes, the evolution of the political speeches, the reshaping of the legal rules.

Resumen En las últimas décadas, y muy especialmente acentuado en los años más recientes, el tema de la laicidad ha reemergido con ímpetu en Uruguay. Las controversias y los principales actores no son nuevos (Iglesia Católica, Masonería), pero los episodios que obligan a problematizar el concepto de laicidad se suceden unos tras otros, sirviendo de piezas de un tenso tablero de moralidades, valores y prácticas en disputa. La llegada de Tabaré Vázquez al gobierno nacional en 2005, su sucesión por José Mujica en 2010, y su regreso a la presidencia en 2015 son el hilo conductor de los varios episodios que se describen en este texto, incluyendo disputas por instalación de símbolos religiosos en el espacio público y el relato de las últimas alianzas entre religión y política en el Uruguay.

Abstract In recent decades, and especially marked in recent years, the issue of secularism has re-emerged with impetus in Uruguay. The controversies and the main actors are not new (Catholic Church, Masonry), but the episodes that force to problematize the concept of secularity happen one after another, serving as pieces of a tense board of moralities, values and practices in dispute. The arrival of Tabaré Vázquez to the national government in 2005, his succession by José Mujica in 2010, and his return to the presidency in 2015 are the thread of the various episodes described in this text, including disputes over the installation of religious symbols in the public space and the account of the last alliances between religion and politics in Uruguay.

Resumen En este texto se realiza una síntesis de la institucionalización del Islam en España y una breve contextualización de las diferentes comunidades musulmanas en la ciudad de Granada. La intención del mismo es presentar una aproximación de los principales discursos acerca de la presencia del Islam y de los diferentes colectivos musulmanes en el espacio público. Discursos presentes en los medios de comunicación y en los espacios virtuales que son generadores de opinión pública y constructores y legitimadores de realidades. Tras los ataques terroristas en Europa, la islamofobia creciente es uno de los tipos de racismo cultural (Wieviorka, 2006) más patentes y latentes fomentado por ciertos sectores de población. El estudio se centra principalmente en un análisis discursivo de los últimos debates emergentes en las redes virtuales relacionados con la presencia del Islam en los espacios públicos de la ciudad granadina.

Abstract This text makes a synthesis of the institutionalization of Islam in Spain and a brief contextualization of the different Muslim communities in the city of Granada.The intention is to present an approximation of the main speeches about the presence of Islam and the different Muslim groups in the public space. Discourses present in the media and in virtual spaces that are generators of public opinion and builders and legitimators of realities. After the terrorist attacks in Europe, the growing Islamophobia is one of the types of cultural racism (Wieviorka, 2006) more patent and latent encouraged by certain sectors of the population. The study focuses mainly on a discursive analysis of the latest emergent debates in the virtual networks related to the presence of Islam in the public spaces of the city of Granada.

Resumen Como un objeto imantado, el pontificado de Francisco atrajo las miradas y los intereses de actores políticos, religiosos, medios de comunicación y científicos sociales. Uno de los resultados de este efecto gravitacional fue la producción de nuevas formas de militancia política religiosa, en la que se destaca el movimiento Misioneros de Francisco, en Argentina. Desde una perspectiva etnográfica en este trabajo analizaremos la acción pública de este grupo en tres espacios diferentes– las plazas, la calle y el barrio–, para delinear la especificidad de su propuesta y sus niveles de eficacia en la difusión, de cara a las gramáticas territoriales y sus condicionantes. En las conclusiones las potencialidades y los límites del despliegue del movimiento en el espacio público, y sobre la importancia de la dimensión territorial en la proyección de las religiones contemporáneas.

Abstract This article aims at analyse the actions in the public space of social movements based on a dynamic relation between politics and religion. The election of catholic Pope Francis gave birth to new ways of political and religious activism, that we focalise in the Movement ‘Misioneros de Francisco’ (Francis’ Missionaries’). From an ethnographic perspective, this article identifies three privileged ways of being in the public space: the activism in the square, in the neighbourhood and in the street, and studies the ways of action and the disputes and issues towards the political and ecclesiastical institutions presents in the territory.

Resumo Levando em conta a expansão do ativismo de diversas agências religiosas nas mais variadas arenas públicas nacionais, este artigo visa trabalhar o problema da reconfiguração recente do secularismo brasileiro. A partir da análise de três casos concretos – cerimônia de inauguração do Tempo de Salomão, repercussão midiática de uma pastora transgênera e controvérsias no Supremo Tribunal Federal envolvendo agentes religiosos –, procuraremos demonstrar como as diversas dinâmicas de produção de visibilidade observadas resultam em um novo entendimento do que é “fazer religião” em público e, no limite, modificam a configuração de nossa ordem jurídica secular. Seguindo por esse caminho e observando o modo como a publicização da experiência sacraliza (moraliza) problemas privados tornando-os públicos, constata-se que grande parte da eficácia da linguagem religiosa contemporânea está menos na imposição de uma mensagem do que na qualidade e plasticidade de suas encenações nas diferentes arenas.

Abstract This article analyses the problem of the recent reconfiguration of Brazilian secularism, taking into account the expansion of the activism of several religious agencies in the most varied national public arenas. We observed three empirical cases involving religious agents – the Solomon’s Temple Inauguration ceremony, the media’s repercussion of a transgender pastor and two controversies in the Federal Supreme Court – analyzing the different dynamics of production of visibility that results in a new understanding of what it is to “do religion” in public. In this sense, it was observed how to make the experience public sacralizes (moralises) the private problems and it has been found that the effectiveness of contemporary religious language cames much more from the quality and plasticity of its scenarios in the different arenas than of the imposition of a religion’s message.

Resumo Considerando a religião no espaço público, o aborto é dos temas que mais mobilizam o engajamento de atores religiosos que tentam influir no debate. O artigo analisa o julgamento da Arguição de Descumprimento de Preceito Fundamental 54 (ADPF 54) realizado no Supremo Tribunal Federal em 11 e 12 de abril de 2012. Realizou-se observação etnográfica de uma vigília realizada em frente ao STF na véspera do julgamento, um ato religioso antes da sessão, os rituais que cercaram o julgamento desde a entrada no STF, até os procedimentos processuais, além do conteúdo dos votos dos ministros e as manifestações no plenário. Alguns personagens emblemáticos circularam no tribunal e no entorno e se tornaram figuras públicas simbólicas naquela causa, caso da anencefálica Marcela de Jesus. O trabalho reflete sobre a dimensão do sagrado presente em várias instâncias e a mobilização de religiosos. Constatou-se diversidade religiosa com presença de católicos, espíritas e evangélicos.

Abstract Regarding religion in public space, abortion is one of the matters that most engage religious actor trying to influence the debate. The article analyses the trial of Accusation of Non-Compliance with a Fundamental Precept (ADPF 54) happened in Supreme Federal Court on April 11th and 12th 2012. The author did ethnographic observation of a vigil in front of Supreme Court on the eve of the trial, a religious service before the session, the rituals that involved the trial since the entrance in the building, up to processual procedures, besides the content of votes of the ministers and the reactions of the plenary. Some emblematic characters circulate in the court and around that became symbolic public figures in that cause, such as the anencephalic baby Marcela de Jesus. The article discusses the sacred dimension in various instances and the mobilization of religious actors. Religious diversity was observed with presence of Catholics, Kardecist Spiritist and Evangelicals.

Resumo O artigo propõe pensar os usos e sentidos de cultura mobilizados em disputas em torno da ocupação do tempo público, bem como as possíveis articulações e deslocamentos entre as categorias de religião, cultura e nação, a partir de uma comparação entre três casos de datas comemorativas brasileiras: o feriado de Nossa Senhora Aparecida, o Dia do Evangélico e o Dia da Consciência Negra. Tomando como base um mapeamento da legislação e do processo legislativo sobre a institucionalização de feriados no calendário oficial brasileiro, podemos observar como datas religiosas são fortemente imbricadas com uma ideia de tradição e de costumes populares. O que se coloca como um elemento de construção da identidade nacional brasileira é o catolicismo, como observamos nas discussões sobre o feriado de Aparecida. O Dia do Evangélico e o da Consciência Negra trariam outros elementos para o calendário nacional, acionando-se também categorias como etnicidade, diversidade, maioria e minoria.

Abstract The article proposes to think the uses and senses of culture mobilized in disputes around the occupation of public time, as well as the possible articulations and displacements between the categories of religion, culture and nation, from a comparison between three cases of Brazilian commemorative days: the holiday of Our Lady of Aparecida, the Day of the Evangelical and the Day of Black Consciousness. Based on a mapping of legislation and the legislative process on the institutionalization of holidays in the Brazilian official calendar, we can observe how religious days are strongly interwoven with an idea of tradition and popular customs. What stands out as an element of construction of the Brazilian national identity is Catholicism, as we observed in the discussions about the holiday of Aparecida. The Day of the Evangelical and the Day of the Black Consciousness would bring other elements to the national calendar, triggering also categories such as ethnicity, diversity, majority and minority.

Resumo Este trabalho toma como objeto a rede de agentes e agências que configura a Pastoral da Criança (organismo de ação social da CNBB) – autodenominada “rede de solidariedade” – compondo uma forma de governo da saúde materna e infantil. O organismo promove “ações básicas de saúde”, “nutrição”, “educação” e “cidadania” para crianças de zero a seis anos de idade dos chamados bolsões de pobreza. Fundamenta-se no trabalho voluntário do “líder da pastoral”, em conhecimentos científicos e burocráticos bem como na mística cristã que uniria fé e vida, amalgamando saberes seculares e religiosos na gestão de corpos maternos e infantis. O artigo discute a relação entre a Pastoral da Criança e o Estado brasileiro a partir da formação de redes de agências e dos fluxos de saberes, pessoas, políticas e dinheiro ensejados na expansão nacional e internacional do organismo, explorando dois eixos: 1) a articulação da Pastoral da Criança com o Ministério da Saúde; 2) a articulação entre a pastoral e a Agência Brasileira de Cooperação.

Abstract This work takes as object the network of agents and agencies that configures the Pastoral da Criança (a social action body of the CNBB) – self called “network of solidarity” – forming a form of government of maternal and child health. The agency promotes “basic health actions”, “nutrition”, “education” and “citizenship” for children under six years old from the so-called “pockets of poverty”. It is based on the “volunteer” work of the “pastoral leader”, amalgamating secular and religious knowledge in the govern of mothers and children. The article discusses the relationship between the Pastoral da Criança and the Brazilian State, based on the formation of networks of agencies and the flows of people, policies and money involved in the national and international expansion of the organism, exploring two axes: 1) articulation Pastoral da Criança with the Ministry of Health; 2) the articulation between the pastoral and the Brazilian Cooperation Agency.

Resumo Diante da emergência de inúmeras artistas que compõem a cultura popular se declarando evangélicas na atualidade, o objetivo principal deste artigo é investigar os sentidos, estilos e efeitos de suas narrativas testemunhais. Mais precisamente, busco analisar como diferentes dispositivos midiáticos (livros, televisão, internet) agem na produção de suas subjetividades religiosas, verificando assim como se efetivam as relações do pentecostalismo com os meios de comunicação de massa nos dias de hoje. A partir do estudo de caso de uma celebridade evangélica, procuro analisar como as tecnologias comunicativas oferecem novos significados à maneira como comumente conhecemos a manifestação desses típicos atos de fala cristãos. Além disso, se constatará também o quanto o universo da família torna-se importante no auxílio da construção dessas narrativas de testemunho, graças a uma série de conexões midiáticas estabelecida entre aquele que narra e sua parentela.

Abstract In the face of the emergence of countless artists who constitute popular culture declaring themselves evangelicals, the main objective of this article is to investigate the meanings, styles and effects of their testimony narratives. More precisely, we seek to analyze how different media devices (books, television, internet) act in the production of their religious subjectivities, verifying how effective are the relations of pentecostalism with the mass media in the present day. Based on the case study of an evangelical celebrity, we seek to analyze more specifically how communicative technologies offer other meanings as we commonly know the manifestation of these typical Christian speech acts. In addition, we will also find out how the family universe becomes important in the construction of these witness narratives, thanks to a series of media connections established between the narrator and his kinship.

Resumo O texto apresenta resultados de uma pesquisa no Brasil acerca da construção de um monumento que representa uma santa católica. A análise se desenvolve em dois planos. Em um deles, a atenção recai sobre os discursos que constituem algo como público. No outro, o que está em foco é a dimensão espacial: como composições materiais impactam configurações de espaços públicos. A cada exploração teórica corresponde uma análise de certas facetas do monumento, ligadas, respectivamente, aos debates que suscita e às soluções arquitetônicas que mobiliza. A articulação entre essas duas dimensões inspira-se em elaborações e debates acerca do que seja arte pública. Pretende-se assim dar uma contribuição para a discussão teórica e a análise empírica de situações que envolvem a presença da religião em espaços públicos.

Abstract The text presents the first results of a study conducted in Brazil about the construction of a monument that represents a Catholic saint. The analysis is developed in two planes. One focuses on discourses that constitute something as “public”. The other focuses on spatial dimensions: how material features influence configurations of public spaces. Each theoretical exploration corresponds to an analysis of certain facets of the monument, which are respectively related to the debates that it has triggered and the architectural solutions generated. The articulation between these two dimensions is inspired by thematizations and debates about what is public art. The aim is to contribute to the theoretical discussion and the empirical analysis of situations involving the presence of religion in public spaces.

Resumo O propósito deste artigo é mostrar como as interpretações públicas da “crise” argentina no início do século XXI foram condições necessárias para a constituição do evento. Tais interpretações sustentavam que a Argentina era dominada por uma espécie de força maligna originada há muito tempo, mas cujos efeitos persistiram no presente. E, a menos que ela fosse conjurada de uma vez por todas, permaneceria ativa e prejudicial no futuro. Assim, a “crise” foi vista como um episódio do fracasso contínuo da nação. Com base em colunas de opinião ou editoriais em jornais e revistas de interesse geral e político, artigos acadêmicos e livros, quero mostrar como a imaginação de futuros possíveis dependia das concepções de temporalidades implícitas nas interpretações expressas em narrativas e diferentes avaliações de eventos, personagens e ideias. Estes deram especificidade histórica ao evento e levaram ao surgimento de novos cenários para a ação política.

Abstract This article is focused on public interpretations of the Argentine “crisis” at the beginning of the twenty-first century as necessary conditions for the constitution of the event. Such interpretations held that Argentina was dominated by a kind of evil force originated a long time ago, but whose effects persisted in the present. And, unless it was conjured once and for all, it would remain active and damaging in the future. Thus, the “crisis” was seen as an episode of the continuous failures. Based on opinion pieces or leading articles in newspapers and general interest and political magazines, academic articles and books, I want to show how the imagination of possible futures depended on the conceptions of temporalities implicit in the interpretations embedded in narratives and different valuations of events, figures and ideas. These gave historical specificity to the event and led to the emergence of new scenarios for political action.
