In this text I present central perspectives and approaches in the international debate about the trafficking of persons, and highlight some of the main points of critique about the contemporary hegemonic framework that are articulated through action-research projects and grassroots anti-trafficking interventions. I argue that despite substantial shifts in global understandings about trafficking, which are heavily influenced by two distinctly different feminist discourses (radical feminism and transnational feminism), today much of what is pursued in the name of a war on trafficking has troubling consequences for poor communities around the world, and has gendered and racialized implications. US anti-trafficking policies are drawn upon here to illustrate some of these tendencies.

The rigid norms assigned to gender roles sanction some behaviors by women as deviant and punish them with stigmatization. The worst stigmatization falls on sexual laborers. Religious, ethnic and class prejudices converge in this situation. The stigmatizing discourse is shared by political sectors from both right and left. It is even supported by some feminist sectors and this generated an important polemic between abolitionists and defenders of the prostitutes' human rights. Although international laws on the matter are becoming more nuanced, the matter is not resolved and discrimination furnishes the bases for the exercise of symbolic and material violence against these women.

When academics and social agents use categories such as prostitution, sex tourism and 'trafficking', they erase the diversity of projects and impulses that are found among people who travel to work, who facilitate travels to work and who live from the sex trade. This erasing in turn reproduces stigmatizing and controlling discourses that justify interventions by those who want to 'help' but who understand very little of what actually goes on in the ground during migration processes. These discourses also fail to examine how Europeans participate in migration questions: tourists who want to enjoy their holidays, who may become fond of 'natives' and who more and more often wish to pay others for domestic, caring and sexual services in Europe.

This article discusses how the migration of Latin American women to work in the sex trade, specifically as exotic dancers, as temporary workers is framed within a specific context of Canadian immigration policies, uneven economic relationships between North America and Latin America, racial and racist constructions and sexist gender relations where sex work is one of the few working possibilities that women have.

A growing sense of moral panic regarding the trafficking of human beings has led to a situation in which the agents who deal with this theme often transform accusations into analytical categories in their attempts to offer solid information regarding the phenomenon. Here, we will analyze a recently published article in this field. We will attempt to recover and problematize its original sources and show how contradictory data are transformed into facts in a process of knowledge production were political militancy becomes confused with scientific research

This article is based on ethnographic research conducted in an old zone of closed female prostitution in Rio de Janeiro - Vila Mimosa. I argue that the spaces created for the consumption of local sex are being used also for encounters between local sex laborers and foreigners. The discussion rises the question that this macrospace of female prostitution is becoming a stage for conflict when it becomes also a sex market used by foreigners.

In this article transvestite's prostitution is discussed trying to evidence the importance of the prostitution territories as fundamental places for the construction of the "transvestite self". The article also discusses different emic categories that classify the transvestites, especially in the sexual trade, bringing to the discussion the relationship of transvestites with their clientele. The violence of the streets, the use of drugs, the dream and the reality of prostitution in Italy also have room in this work crossed by the affections, disputes, territorial demarcations and the sense of the affective and commercial relationships that involve the transvestite universe.

Analysis of sexual tourism has concentrated on the subjugation of women as devalued objects of exchange, trafficked between dominant and subordinate national universes. As Lévi-Strauss points out, however, while often understood to be items of exchange, women are also symbol generators in their own right. It is this symbolic-generating capacity that strengthens the international movement of Brazilian women as sexualized objects of exchange. Basing our analysis on fieldwork among tourists and prostitutes in Copacabana, we seek to demonstrate how women's ability to manipulate symbols potentializes the international movement of Brazilian women and foreign men.
  • Viagens e sexo on-line: a internet na geografia do turismo sexual

    Piscitelli, Adriana

Considering the relevance of Internet in the constitution of the transnational sex market, I analyze in this text, in an anthropological approach, how the images of South-American women spread throughout the cyberspace participate in the alteration of the world's sexual tourism circuit. I argue that, while there is a close relationship between sexual tourism and inequality, poverty, even if extreme, does not warrant the 'success' of a new center for sexual tourism. Given certain economic conditions, cultural aspects that express the intertwining of ethnic-regional traits and styles of sexuality, operate as ways of attraction for the rise of new targets. First, I present the specificities of the virtual space analyzed as well as a characterization of the users. Afterwards, I describe the interactions propitiated by the site and its working code and, taking into account the concepts associated to different regions, I analyze the characteristics of the sketched sexual-ethnic borders. Finally, I return to my initial argument, reflecting on how the processes of racialization that operate in this virtual space participate in the displacements in the world geography of asexual tourism.
  • Destino Buenos Aires: tango-turismo sexual cinematografico

    Savigliano, Marta E.

Buenos Aires currently enjoys a boom in international tourism and the tango is undoubtedly a main local attraction. What are foreign tourists looking for in the tango experience? How do they know what is in a tango and in the tango world for them? What pleasures does the tango offer them? Unconvinced with settling explanations based in the universal and transcendental powers of art, the author explores the uses of tango in narrative cinema - in particular, the sophisticated ways in which the erotics of cultural difference frame tango-esque seduction. For this purpose, tango films of recent release (Potter's The Tango Lesson and Saura's Tango) and oldies (Gilda) are analyzed as stories that, taking place in an exotic Buenos Aires, weave intertwined dramatic plots of cultural and gender alterity - exacerbated by the presence of femmes fatales -, through dramatic and dangerous romantic disencounters with a happy end. Thus the tango, culturally appropriated, promises violent emotional turmoils, erotically tamed via "universal" laws of heterosexuality and homosociality. An irresistible cinematic formula for sex tourism.
