A exegese dessas reflexões constitui o núcleo analítico do texto.

The context is the Partition of India in 1949, with the creation of Pakistan, as seen from the point of view of Punjabi culture (the Punjab was the province closer to the frontiers of the new state) and particularly through the eyes of Asha, a widow 21 years old in 1941, who lived with his deceased husband's family. The transformations derived from the Partition give rise to Asha's following reflections. A daughter's food is never heavy on her parents. But how long will one's parents live? When two pieces of bread are experienced as heavy by one's own brother… then it is better to keep one's honor… make one's peace … and live where one was destined to live. The exegesis of this text is the analytical nucleus of the text. The author is not asking how the events of the Partition were present to consciousness as past events but how they came to be incorporated into the temporal structure of relationships.
  • Género en transición: sentido común, mujeres y guerra

    Theidon, Kimberly

In August 28, 2003, after two years working and having collected 17000 testimonials, the Peruvian Committee for the Truth and Reconciliation presented its Final Information on the violence period from 1980 to 2000. This Committee shared many traits with its equivalents from Guatemala and South Africa. All three Committees were considered gender-sensitive for they tried to bring to light the experiences of violence suffered by women. Such an emphasis reflected the will to write "more inclusive truths" as well as changes in international jurisprudence. In this article, I examine the gender-sensitive research strategies and the ways in which truth committees incorporated these strategies to their work. Truth and memory are, in fact, crossed by gender, but not necessarily in the way that common sense understands it. Thus, I hope to offer a more subtle understanding of the dimensions associated to gender in war.

    Vianna, Adriana; Farias, Juliana

This work discusses relations between "violence" and "gender" by focusing situations involving forms of "struggle for justice" and the expression of pain by relatives of persons killed by Rio de Janeiro's military police. By following different situations where those relatives, connected in networks of support and political organization, seek the conviction of the policemen that have killed their sons, brothers or nephews, we reflect on the work of social construction of "violence" and illegitimacy of these murders as being inseparably connected to grammars of gender, especially to the symbolic protagonism of "mothers".

The war in Bosnia and Herzegovina ethnically organized territories and redefined the ethno-national categories and groups - Serbs, Croats and Bosnians (Muslims). Beside the battles between soldiers at the front lines, several atrocities used to happen in other fields: homes, villages, cities, detention places, concentration camps, and the rape camps. This article introduces the debate about the rapes that occurred during the war in Bosnia and the ways to understand them: as a war weapon, as an ethnic cleansing tool, as an attempt to extermination.

This article approaches the topic of the genital feminine ablation. It is a practice realized by some indigenous communities embera chamí, who live in the western zone of Colombia. From an anthropologic perspective and using elements of feminism, this article analyzes the relation among ablation, the cultural construction of feminine identity, the regulation of sexuality and the social mandates directed to women.

In this article I analyze the conjugal visits rights inside the Female Prison of São Paulo Capital, Brazil. These visits are characterized in the Brazilian Penal Execution Legislation as the main way of maintaining family relationships and marriage for persons deprived of liberty. My aim is to comprehend which relations have been considered familiar and conjugal by the administrative staff of the female prison unit. This question became even more complex after May 5, 2011 when the Supreme Court ruled the legal equalization of Heterosexual and Homosexual Civil Unions. I argued that this event reiterates a logic that undertakes violence to sexual relations which are not considered conjugal or love relations. On the other hand, the Supreme Court decision responds to a desire of adequacy of people who maintained homosexual love relationships that, until May 5, were not recognized by the State. The dispute for conjugal visit rights is in the center of this dilemma which is related to the recognition demands; however, this struggle does not challenge the historical violence perpetrated to (homo)sexuals in female prisons.

This article deals with the rising interest in "femicide" as a category for the analysis of women's deaths in Latin America and its usage in the Brazilian case. Despite occurring in diverse circumstances, through their categorization as "femicides" all deaths are explained by the fact that the "victims are women", emphasizing the persistence of a patriarchal model of domination in contemporary societies. The use of this category is questioned by opposing it to the discussions on the specificities of gender and its intersection with other social markers.

  • Frankenstein e o espectro do desejo Artigos

    Miskolci, Richard

Starting with the polemic about Frankenstein's (1818) authorship, I develop an analysis that includes it in a cultural history of subjectivity. The book is an example of the early gothic, probably the first book of science fiction, but it also takes part in a lineage of novels that explore the experience of being haunted by a phantom, a memory, a monster. I try to reconstitute that experience in historical and social psychological terms to comprehend the relations between desire, norms, and cultural conventions in the emergence of compulsory heterosexuality.
  • Cruzando fronteiras: prostituição e imigração Artigos

    Mayorga, Claudia

This work presents a reflection about the identity tensions experienced by Brazilian women who migrated to Spain to practice prostitution from a critical perspective on Eurocentric and colonial logics. Such prospects, since the emergence of national states, have brought the invention of other, naturalizing unequal relations of race, ethnicity, gender, nationality. We will see how Brazilian immigrants and prostitutes live heterodesignations as the other focusing on possible questions to social hierarchies from their status as immigrants and prostitutes in Europe. For this, we will review the crisis that the European national states have experienced and which as a consequence has been worsening xenophobic and racist practices. We also present the analysis of interviews conducted with Brazilian immigrant prostitutes in Madrid, Spain.

In the medieval Portuguese society, the practice of clerical concubinage represented a threat to celibacy and religious marriages. These were fundamental institutions to the social ordination project defended by the Church and the monarchy. In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries the civil laws defined clerical concubinage as crime. However, there was the possibility of acquittal or sentence reduction by means of Letters of Pardon, an important legal tool to understand the gender representations that have mediated the eye of justice, forging the image of concubines as sinners and criminals.

This article relates the peripheral positions of woman and child in the scientific field and the current epistemological difficulties towards the emancipation of childhood as a conceptually autonomous sociological category. These difficulties are similar to the resistance encountered some years ago by "feminist studies" to establish gender as a new category of analysis. Childhood is a phenomenon permeated, in the social field, by asymmetric relations of power and action between generations and, in the scientific field, by the adult-focused and predominantly masculine (androcentric) perspective of knowledge.
  • A nova família e a ordem jurídica Artigos

The Family in Disorder, written by historian and psychoanalyst Elizabeth Roudinesco, is one of the most positive contributions to the study of the families in the contemporary world. The author's thesis is that despite all the "disorder", ranging from the loss of paternal power and homosexual couples, the institution of the family is surviving. According to her, the family is being claimed as the "single value insurance to which nobody wants to renounce", regardless of age, sex, sexual orientation or social class. This yearning for the family brings with it rearrangements, resultant of the "family in disorder", and new rights that challenge the traditional assumptions about the theme.
