  • Considerações em tôrno das hydromedusae da região de Fernando de Noronha

    Vannucci, M.

    Resumo em Inglês:

During a seven days trip to the oceanic island of Fernando de Noronha, plankton was hauled from depths varying between 50 m and the surface. All the nets used were open nets, one was 1 m wide at the mouth, the other 25 cm wide. Due to lack of suitable equipment only the surface temperature and salinity were taken. Five holoplanktonic species wore collected, being Aglaura hemistoma the most abundant (145 specimens) and present at almost every station. Next in frequency of specimens and number of stations are: Liriope tetraphylla (27 specimens), Rhopalonema velatum (25 specimens), Solmundella bitentaculata (2 specimens) and finally Geryonia proboscidalis (1 specimen). Most of the specimens were immature. Of the meroplanktonic species, the most abundant was Eutima mira (7 specimens), next Obelia (perhaps Obelia geniculata). 4 specimens), Phialidium sp. (the medusa of the hydroid Clytia. 1 specimen). a fragment of Clytia cylindrica (hydroid). Sarsia sp. (the medusa of the hydroid Syncoryne, 1 specimen) and a few hydroids of Syncoryne sp. Numerous fragments of thecate hydroids, some taken alive, some not, were also present in the samples. On the whole, the present collection is characterized firstly by a great majority of oceanic forms both in number of species and number of individuals and secondly by relative abundance of benthonic specimens in the plankton. The author believes that the first fact may be explained by the geographical position of the island, placed 175 miles away from the edge of the continental shelf or north-eartern Brazil. The second fact might be explained by the strong impact of the South Atlantic current on the insular shelf that may be strong enough to tear fragments from the benthonic hydroid colonies. Due to the impact upon the island's submerged portion, upwelling or strong turbulence might insue, responsible for the presence of benthonic animals in the plankton. Benthonic nematodes were also present.

The present paper analyses a case of ovary assimetry verifier! in a specimen of Micropogon fumieri (Desmarest, 1822) Jordan, 1884, captured at San Antonio Cape, Argentina, between the 4th and the 12th of January, 1958. The specimen had the ovaries ful] developed and the following biometric characteristics: total length, 49,6 cm; standard length, 42.5 cm; maximum height, 12.5 cm; total weight, 1,710 g. The following conclusions were drawn: 1 - There was an assimetry of shape, weight and internal structure in the two ovaries; 2 - The right ovary had more ovules per unity of weight than the left one, although there was not a significant difference between the diameter of the ovules; 3 - We can suppose that the right ovary, smaller than the left one, tried to reach an equilibrium with the left one through an increase in the capacity of producing sexual cells per weight unity and so through the reduction of the intersticial materials; 4 - The assimetry was determined during the ontogenetical process and not by any pathological cause; 5 - We suppose that the embryologieal process responsible for the analysed assimetry is similar to the one that occurs among the birds, and so, that among the fishes the right gonada has more lability on the sex determining process.
  • A new genus and a new species of Diatom from Brazilian marine waters

    Teixeira, Clóvis
  • Contribuição para o conhecimento da alimentação de jamantas jovens (Manta Ehrenbergii Mueller & Henle)

    Sadowsky, Victor

    Resumo em Inglês:

The present note is concerned with the food habits of young Manta ehrenbergii (manta) captured at the southern coast of São Paulo State. The author examined the stomach contents of the specimens and found hesides zoo and phytoplankton, some squids, copepods, crustacean and fish larvae. Among the diatoms present, Coscinodiscus was the dominant genus.

  • Notas biométricas sobre a corvina-marisqueira, Micropogon furnieri (Desmarest, 1822) Jordan, 1884

    Paiva, Melquíades Pinto

    Resumo em Inglês:

The present paper has the objective of verifying the variability of the values of the main biométrie relations used in the identification of Micropogon furnieri (Desmarest, 1822) Jordan, 1884 and also of verifying the possibilities that this relations could be used in the separation of the independent populations that live in the Uruguayan district of the Argentinian zoogeographic province and in the transition zone between this last one and the south Brazilian zoogeographic province. Three fishing areas were examined: area I - in between the latitudes of 29º30'S and 31º30'S, related to the mouth of the Tramandai River; area II - in between the latitudes of 31º30'S and 33º00'S, related to the mouth of the Grande River; area III - in between the latitudes of 35º00'S and 36º30'S, related to the mouth of the La Plata River. The conclusions resulting from the study are: 1 - The relations between the total length and any of the other elements (total weight, standard length, maximum height, head length, snout length, eye diameter and intestine length), with reference to the sex and fishing areas and inside the limits of total length variation from 34 to 60 cm, extremes included, do not allow the acceptance of the existence of independent populations in the different fishing areas; 2 - The relation total length/total weight, independent of the sex and fishing areas and inside the limits of total length variation from 34 to 60 cm, extremes included, shows and almost uniform increase of the total weight from 410 to 2,310 g; 3 - Independent of the sex and fishing areas, and inside the limits of the total length variation from 34 to 60 cm, extremes included, can be observed the following amplitudes of variation expressed as percentage of total length and corresponding to each other biometric clement, as standard lenght - from 83 to 87%, maximum height - from 22 to 28%, head length - from 24 to 28%, snout length - from 8 to 11%, eye diameter - from 3 to 5%, intestine length - from 110 to 225%.
  • Ocorrência do "Camarupim": Megalops atlanticus Val., na região lagunar de Cananéia

    Sadowsky, Victor

    Resumo em Inglês:

Although fishermen from the lagoon region of Cananéia (25º lat. s) knew for long the existence of Megalops atlanticus Val. (Camarupim) in that region no record has ever been confirmed the occurrence. In October 1958 the author obtained two specimens captured with a net used for Cynoscion acoupa Lacépèpe (Pescada amarela). The specimens were measured, the gonads observed and the presence of parasites was examined. The analyses of the stomach contents revealed the presence of 37 catfishes, fam. Arridae, a flat-fish and several unidentified small fish. The author supposes that the specimens captured belonged to a small shoal and entered the lagoon region after a long migration.
