Evaluation of aerobic fitness indicators in canoers reveals functional characteristics acquired through specific training, which can be related to competitive performance. Thus, the aim of the present study was to evaluate functional evaluators obtained in ergospirometry test of young canoers, as well as to verify the relationship of these variables with performance in 200, 500 and 1000 m distances. The sample consisted of 12 male athletes (17.6 ± 2.1 years; 175.7 ± 2.5 cm; 68.3 ± 6.3 kg) through a test in cycle ergometer of upper extremities for determination of oxygen uptake in the ventilatory threshold 1 (VT1 - 1.8 ± 0.4 L/min), in the ventilatory threshold 2 (VT2 - 2.9 ± 0.4 L/min) and VO2peak (3.5 ± 0.4 L/min). The test began with a 17 W load, with 17 W/min increments until voluntary exhaustion. The athletes have been also submitted to specific tests in K-1 individual canoe in a lake, with the purpose to reach the lowest times in the referred distances (times equivalent to 47.6 ± 4.3, 122.0 ± 9.0 and 239.5 ± 12.6 s, respectively). The Spearman-Rank correlation test was used (rs), with significance level set at 5%. Moderate correlation was observed between VT2 and time in the 1000 m (rs = -0.685), VO2peak and time in the 500 m (rs = -0.699) and VO2peak and time in the 1000 m) rs = -0.734). Therefore, it is concluded that VT2 and VO2peak obtained in cycle ergometer of upper extremities, and expressed in absolute terms, predict performance in 500 and 1000 m canoeing events and can be potentially applied in evaluation of canoers.

Pereira, Marta Inez Rodrigues; Gomes, Paulo Sergio Chagas; Bhambhani, Yagesh

INTRODUCTION: Very little is known about the effects of movement velocity and rest intervals between sets of resistance exercise. PURPOSE: To compare the maximum number of repetitions to volitional fatigue (REPS) on a knee extension machine with the dominant leg for different loads, velocities and rest intervals between sets. METHODS: Nine volunteers (35.8 ± 10.8 years; 74.2 ± 16.7 kg; 171.0 ± 10.0 cm) reported to the laboratory to determine 1RM and REPS under six conditions, randomly determined and separated by at least 48 h: 1 set with 60% 1RM at 80°•s-1 and 25°•s-1; 1 set with 80% 1RM at 25°•s-1; 3 sets with 80% 1RM at 80°•s-1 and rest intervals of 3 min, 1 min and one that allowed recovery or stabilization of muscle oxygenation (RMox), measured by near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). RESULTS: Dependent samples t-test showed that REPS was significantly (p < 0.05) larger for the lighter than the heavier load, for slow (light = 8.8 ± 1.3; heavy = 5.9 ± 0.9) and fast velocities (light = 16.3 ± 3.9; heavy = 9.4 ± 1.9), and significantly larger for the fast than the slow velocity, for both loads. The 3x3 ANOVA did not show differences among intervals on set 1 (3 min = 9.4 ± 1.9; 1 min = 10.8 ± 3.2; RMox = 10.1 ± 3.0), however, there were significant differences on sets 2 and 3 between 3 min (set 2 = 7.0 ± 1.7; set 3 = 6.4 ± 1.3) and 1 min (set 2 = 5.6 ± 1.1; set 3 = 4.8 ± 1.2), but not between RMox (set 2 = 6.4 ± 1.7; set 3 = 6.1 ± 1.5) and the other intervals. For all three intervals, REPS on set 1 was significantly larger than on the other sets. CONCLUSIONS: Performance in resistance exercise is affected by load, velocity and rest interval between sets and is independent of muscle oxygenation recovery. Exercise prescription and assessment of performance should take these variables into consideration in view of the specific aims.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present study was to verify the effect of tobacco smoking abstinence on cardiovascular responses to progressive submaximal physical exercise in sedentary female smokers. METHODS: Systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and heart rate (HR) were non-invasively measured in young non-smoking women (NSW, n = 7) and smoking women (SW, n = 7), with and without tobacco abstinence for 24 hours, at rest, during the accomplishment of a submaximal bicycle ergometric test and recovery period. RESULTS: At rest, DBP and HR were higher in the SW group (76 ± 1 mmHg and 86 ± 5 bpm) when compared to the NSW group (68 ± 2 mmHg and 72 ± 2 bpm). After 24 hours of no tobacco use, the groups presented similar values. During exercise, SBP and HR increased in the studied groups. DBP was higher in the SW group (~15%) in relation to the NSW group in all periods of exercise training. In the abstinence period, DBP only increased in the last load of exercise. During recovery period, in basal condition and 24h-abstinence, both DBP and HR were higher in the SW group when compared to the NSW group. CONCLUSION: These results show that young female smokers present harmful consequences in hemodynamic parameters at rest and in response to submaximal exercise. These findings can be partly reverted by short-term abstinence from tobacco use.

INTRODUCTION: Creatine is one of the supplements most used by athletes in order to increase protein synthesis and consequently muscle mass and strength. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effects of creatine intake on the performance and lean body mass of Wistar rats. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were allocated into one of the four groups: sedentary without creatine (S); Sedentary with creatine (SC); exercise without creatine (E); and exercise with creatine (EC) and received water and chow ad libitum. Those animals in SC and EC groups ingested creatine daily (0.430 g/kg body weight for 7 days and 0.070 g/kg body weight for the following 6 weeks). Animals from E and EC groups underwent a progressive vertical jump regimen (5 x 10 jumps with 1 min. resting interval) in a tank filled with water at 30 ± 1ºC, 5 days/wk for 7 weeks. Performance was assessed by taking the time to perform 5 x 10 vertical jumps. The contents of water, fat and protein of the rat's muscles and bones were measured. RESULTS: The performance was not affected by creatine intake (P > 0.05). Animals supplemented with creatine had an increased percentage of protein and a reduced percentage of fat (P < 0.05), regardless the exercise training. Exercised animals exhibited a higher percentage of protein and a lower percentage of fat and gained less body weight when compared to sedentary animals (P < 0.05), regardless the creatine supplementation. There was no difference between groups for water content and food intake (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Creatine supplementation did not affect performance of the animals. Nevertheless, it altered the lean body mass. Creatine supplementation as well as the power training program, independently, raised the protein percentage of the muscles and bones and reduced the fat percentage, with no alteration in the water percentage.

A massa magra aumentou ES somente no grupo A (p = 0,038).

OBJECTIVE: To verify the alterations promoted by creatine supplementation in the anthropometric variables and the resultant of dynamic maximum strength (RDMS) in college students submitted to 8 wk of strength training. METHODOLOGY: The sample consisted of 18 male college students, aged between 19 to 25 years. Height (cm), body mass (kg) and tests of maximum voluntary muscular action (1MVMA) weight in the squat were determined prior to the training. The subjects were divided in two groups: A (creatine) or B (placebo). The double-blind protocol was adopted. After 8 weeks of strength training, the tests battery from the pre-training was repeated. RESULTS: After 8 wk of training, it was verified that both groups had statistically significant (SS) alterations in the RDMS in all the exercises (p = 0.007 / 0.008). The analysis of the percentile improvement (PI) and the RDMS delta in the squat exercises, military press and close-grip-extensions, showed that group A had positive SS alterations higher than group B (p = 0.008 / 0.038). Lean body mass only SS increased in group A (p = 0.038). However, the percentage of body fat did not show alterations in none of the groups. The relationship between the PI of the arm and forearm circumferences (C) and the PI in the RDMS of the development exercise was SS (r = 0.481 and 0.546, respectively), as well as between the PI in the thigh C and the PI of the RDMS of the squat exercise (r = 0.619). CONCLUSION: Regardless the substance ingested, strength training was able to increase in RDMS; however, creatine supplementation was shown to be more efficient that the placebo, showing higher percentual and delta improvement in strength.

The aim of this study was to compare the electromyographic (EMG) activity of the femoris rectus, femoris biceps, tibialis anterior and soleus muscles in squatting, associating the trunk in erect position with two angles of knee flexion (40° and 60°) and the trunk at 45° flexion with three angles of knee flexion (40°, 60° and 90°). All associations were performed with and without additional load (10 kg). The sample was composed of 12 healthy individuals with mean age of 21.1 ± 2.5 years and weight of 62.8 ± 7.4 kg. The EMG of the cited muscles was isometrically registered in 10 squatting positions. For statistical analysis, Friedman Two-Way ANOVA and the Newman-Keuls Post-Hoc test were used. The results showed co-activation between the femoris rectus and femoris biceps muscles with the trunk in flexion and at 40° of knee flexion and between the femoris rectus and soleus muscles in the other positions considered (p < 0.05). It was also possible to observe co-activation between tibialis anterior and femoris biceps muscles with knee at 40° and 60° of flexion, with the trunk erect and in flexion and between the tibialis anterior and soleus muscles in the other positions (p < 0.05). Concerning isolated muscular activation, higher knee flexion in squatting was an important factor to greater muscles activation, except for the soleus. Trunk position and the additional load of 10 kg have influenced in the muscular activation of the femoris rectus at 60° of knee flexion, in which the erect trunk provided more activation. The femoris biceps presented greater activation when the knee was in 40° of flexion and the trunk flexioned. The co-activation between the femoris rectus and biceps with the trunk in flexion, and between the femoris rectus and soleus in the other positions, lead to new possibilities of exercises in rehabilitation.

Physical exercise has been considered one of the mechanisms that improve health and quality of life. As a consequence of the enhanced demand for fitness centers, physical activities in liquid environment, especially aquatic cycling, have increased in the last years. However, methods of assessment and prescription of aerobic training in these equipments are still scarce. The objective of this study was to propose an adapted test of Conconi et al (1982) to aquatic bicycle. 27 participants (24 ± 6 years, 171 ± 8 cm, 66 ± 12 kg), 15 male and 12 female, were assessed. The participants have been submitted to a graded test in aquatic bicycle, with initial load of 50 RPM and increments of 3 RPM each minute, until exhaustion. HR was registered during the entire test. For data analysis, descriptive statistics were used as well as Student "t" test for comparison between genders. HRDP was identified in 85% of the subjects. There were not significant differences in HRmax (181 ± 12 and 181 ± 10 BPM), HRDP (162 ± 10 and 172 ± 9 BPM) and %HRDPrpm (91 ± 4 and 90 ± 3 % RPMmax) between males and females, respectively. On the other hand, RPMmax (81 ± 6 and 72 ± 5 RPM), %HRDP (90 ± 5 and 93 ± 3 %HRmax) and HRDPrpm (74 ± 6 and 66 ± 4 RPM) were significantly different. In conclusion, the adapted Conconi test can be performed in aquatic bicycle.

The aims of this study were: 1) to propose predictive equations for gait energy expenditure (GEE) of young individuals in three situations: a) when the identification of the gait velocity is possible; b) when heart rate (HR) monitoring is possible; and c) when neither the velocity identification nor the HR monitoring is possible; and 2) to validate the GEE made by the HR Polar M71® monitor. Thirty individuals (16 males, 22.7 ± 2.6 years and 14 female, 22.1 ± 2.1 years), non-athletes, physical education students were instructed to walk on the treadmill with 1% inclination, in self-selected low, moderate and high intensity velocities, during 6 minutes in each velocity. The VO2, measured by the Aerosport Metabolic Analyzer Teem 100, HR and GEE estimated by the monitor, were registered in the last 2 minutes of each load. It was concluded that the best GEE prediction is done with the use of the gait velocity and the individual's body weight. HR for prediction of GEE should be accompanied by the gender and rest HR. The perceived exertion scale proposed in this study should be utilized only when it is not possible to register the velocity or the HR. The use of other scales of perceived exertion is encouraged. The HR Polar M71 monitor is a valid instrument for GEE estimation, with the limitation that is necessary that HR exceeds 100 bpm. Its precision is enhanced at high intensity gait.

Panic attacks are represented by distinct periods in which there is a sudden beginning of internal apprehension, fear or terror, frequently associated with feelings of imminent catastrophe, diagnosed in approximately 10% of the population. The panic disorder is an anxiety crisis that is characterized by the recurrence of panic attacks: sudden crises of uneasiness and sensation of danger or imminent death, followed by diverse physical and cognitive symptoms. Individuals with panic disorder are characteristically concerned about panic attacks implications or consequences. It is a complex clinical condition that involves different modalities or myriad of symptoms. Thus, the focus on the physical sensations misinterpreted in panic disorder and hypochondria, is basically centered in autonomic manifestations, such as tachycardia and dyspnea. There are scarce studies on physical activity and panic disorder. The main purpose of the study is to identify with different descriptions whether there is a 'main' population with symptoms predominantly respiratory presenting avoidance of physical activity and exercise influence on this population.

Physicians, physiologists, biochemists, psychologists and even professionals involved with physical exercise have been recently increasing their interests for the non-linear dynamics, a scientific theory developed mainly by mathematicians, which is generically known as the Complexity Theory. Although few investigations on Physical Education and Sports make use of this paradigm to solve their problems, a growing interest for this very approach has been noticed, mainly concerning the effects of physical exercise on changes in the variability and complexity of physiological temporal series. Usually, such changes appear as the decrease in its temporal behavior, denoting in decrease in the body complexity or in the components specifically involved in its regulation. According to the Complexity Theory, since non-linear interactions existing in biological systems are emphasized, it is observed that not only the increase (overcompensation) of the body components with the practice of physical exercises but also those which cause atrophy (decompensation) in parallel, once they can compromise the functionality of these systems. Thus, contrary to the emphasis that is given in the physical training to the monotonous repetition of intense physical activity and with emphasis on positive specific effects, that invariably promote the simplification of the body, larger qualitative and quantitative variation is recommended in the exercise practice. The objective is to preserve its natural complexity or neutralize its rapid decrease with aging. The present review has the objective, besides describing the possible complexity loss with physical training, to discuss some concepts of the Complexity Theory in an introductory way, with particular emphasis on issues involving health and physical training.
  • Aspectos atuais sobre estresse oxidativo, exercícios físicos e suplementação Artigos De Revisão

Cruzat, Vinicius Fernandes; Rogero, Marcelo Macedo; Borges, Maria Carolina; Tirapegui, Julio

Oxygen reactive species (ORE) are usually produced by the body metabolism. However, ORE present the ability to remove electrons from other cellular composites, being able to cause oxidative injuries in several molecules. Such fact leads to a total loss of cellular function. Physical exercise practice increases ORE synthesis, besides promoting muscular injury and inflammation. After a physical exercise set, the recovery phase begins, where several effects positive to health are observed, including increase in resistance to new injuries induced or not by exercise, a fact which is considered an 'adaptation' process. Many studies though, have reported that this recovery is not reached by individuals who are submitted to intense and extended exercises, or even, who have high training frequency. Nutritional alternatives have been widely studied, in order to reduce the effects promoted by extenuating exercise, among which vitamin E, vitamin C, creatine and glutamine supplementation is included. This review has the aim to approach the current aspects concerning the ORE formation, the cellular injury and inflammation processes, the adaptation to the kinds of aerobic and anaerobic exercise, besides possible nutritional interventions.

Moderate physical training enhances the defense mechanisms, while intense physical training induces to immune suppression. The underlying mechanisms are associated with the link between nervous, endocrine, and immune systems. It suggests autonomic patterns and modulation of immune response. Immune cells, when exposed to regular bouts of stress, develop a mechanism of tolerance. In many tissues, it has been demonstrated that the response to aggressive conditions is attenuated by moderate physical training. Thus, training can induce tolerance to aggressive/stressful situations. In this review, studies suggesting the adaptation mechanisms of the immune system in response to physical training will be reported.
  • Terapia gênica, doping genético e esporte: fundamentação e implicações para o futuro Artigos De Revisão

Artioli, Guilherme Giannini; Hirata, Rosário Dominguez Crespo; Lancha Junior, Antonio Herbert

Optimal performance has been constantly sought for in high level competitive sport. To achieve this goal, many athletes use illicit drugs and methods, which could have important side effects. Gene therapy is a very recent therapeutic modality, whose results have shown to be efficient in the treatment of severe diseases so far. The basis of gene therapy is a vectorial transfer of genetic materials to target-cells in order to supply the products of an abnormal gene in the patient's genome. Recently, the potential for misuse of gene therapy among athletes has called attention of scientists and sports regulating organs. The transfer of genes that could improve athletic performance, a method prohibited by COI in 2003, was named gene doping. The most important candidate genes for gene doping are the ones which codify for the following proteins: GH, IGH-1, miostatin blockers, VEGF, endorfins and enkefalins, eritropoetin, leptin and PPAR-delta. Once inserted in the athlete genome, the gene would be expressed and produce an endogenous product capable of improving performance. Thus, current doping detection methods are not sensitive enough to detect gene doping, which in turn could stimulate its use among athletes. Moreover, gene therapy still presents known application problems, such as inflammatory response and lack of control of gene activation. It is probable that such problems would be even more important in healthy individuals, since there would be excessive product of the transferred gene. Moreover, other unknown risks specific for each gene are present. Therefore, debate on gene doping should be carried on in the academic as well as sports field, in order to study prevention, control and detection measures of gene doping, avoiding hence, future problems regarding the misuse of this promising therapy.
  • Efeitos do exercício físico sobre o estado redox cerebral Artigos De Revisão

Aguiar Jr., Aderbal S.; Pinho, Ricardo A.

Physical activity is known for promoting health and well-being. Exercise is also responsible for increasing the production of Oxygen Reactive Species (ORS) by increasing mitochondrial oxygen consumption causing tissue oxidative stress. The imbalance between ORS production and tissue antioxidant defenses can cause oxidative damage to proteins, lipids and DNA. Brain oxidative damage is a common etiopathology mechanism of apoptosis and neurodegeneration. The brain-derived neurotrophic factor plays an important role in this context. In this review, we showed the results of different models and configurations of physical exercise in oxidative and neurotrophic metabolism of the Central Nervous System (CNS). We also reviewed studies that utilized antioxidant supplementation to prevent exercise-induced oxidative damage to CNS. The commonest physical exercise models were running wheels, swimming and treadmill with very different configurations of physical training such as duration and intensity. The results of physical training on brain tissues are very controversial, but generally show improvement in synaptic plasticity and cognition function with low and moderate intensity exercises.
