Twenty years of reflections in and about procedures of "life histories in formation" allow the production of a synthesis about their contributions, and the understanding of the development from the point of view of the developing subjects. They also provide an understanding of the aspirations of knowledge about the contexts of usage of biographical perspectives. The paper therefore offers a wide scene of European and international authors who have published their research in this field, and recognises life histories as a project of knowledge of thematic biographical perspectives attending to specific projects. In this diversity, however, a unity can be perceived: the preoccupation with creating a knowledge based on an intersubjective collaboration between the researchers and the writers of the accounts, and therefore the preoccupation with providing the work with and about subjectivity with hermeneutic standards. At the same time knowledge of the process of creation of the self and of knowledge that can be generalised through its usage value is produced.
  • Origens e prospectiva do pensamento político-pedagógico de Paulo Freire Artigos

    Scocuglia, Afonso Celso

This paper intends to examine the relationship between education and politics along the construction of the Paulo Freire’s discourse. With this respect, the paper deals with the relationship between Freire’s proposals and the "developmental nationalism" movement, and with the populism of the 50’s and 60’s. The main theoretical influences on this first phase of Paulo Freire’s are pointed out, in particular the existentialist and personalist veins upon which his progressive Christian thinking is based, and the influences of the intellectuals from the ISEB. The paper then seeks to identify Freire’s further theoretical development, beginning with the modifying influences of the Marxism. Other theoretical influences - Marx, Hobsbawn, Goldman, Lukács, Gramsci and Sartre - combine with Freire’s critical and self-critical thinking to produce a "new" Freire, a time in which his discourse is engaged in the concern with the "politicity of education" and with the ‘educability of politics’. In this sense, the issue of the inseparability of education and politics and their specifics is discussed. Finally, some of the possible syntheses of Freire’s thinking are examined, and an itinerary of his origins and of his pedagogical- political perspective is outlined. Intrinsic to the making of this paper is the belief that it deals with one of the most important pedagogical contributions of the twentieth century that, as such, constitutes an educational proposal that is necessary to our future as an autonomous society, hopeful and dialogic, although permanently outraged at the violation of human rights and at social injustice.

This text starts with a characterization in which the Brazilian New School movement is considered as the disseminator of the introduction of scientific procedures in the pedagogical field, as if education should be subordinated to the rules of thought and to the findings of science. The text then shows that this characterization describes only one of the trends among the renewed educational ideas. Another idea, this one heavily influenced by the thinking of North-American philosopher and educator John Dewey, offers very different directions. The paper then analyzes some articles published in the fifties by the Revista Brasileira de Estudos Pedagógicos, a journal published by the National Institute of Pedagogical Studies (INEP). Such articles, written by Anísio Teixeira, João Roberto Moreira, and Luiz Alves de Mattos amongst others, translate the renewed educational ideas of the period and express the conceptions based on John Dewey’s ideas. The themes discussed by those Brazilian educators are grouped according to the following categories: democracy, freedom, socio-educational research, and educational planning. Along the analysis performed here it has been noted that the authors express different visions of the same thinker - John Dewey. This fact can be understood using the concept of "recontextualization", proposed by Basil Bernstein, according to whom the theories or philosophical conceptions suffer modifications, sometimes fundamental, as they are transformed in pedagogical discourses. At the same that this work intends to contribute to a better understanding of the presence of Dewey’s thinking in Brazil, it also points to the need of developing deeper studies about the processes of recontextualization in the educational field.

This article discusses the process of structuring the child’s autonomy in pedagogical situations. It starts by attempting to distinguish between the concepts of freedom and autonomy, since these are often taken synonymously. It is fundamental to establish this distinction to reveal the non-innate character of the autonomy, a quality of the being that needs structuring. In the interactionist theoretical approach chosen for this discussion the structuring of autonomy is seen as a process that needs to be built between the natural freedom - inherent to human nature - and the self-regulating ability of the child in the face of the needs of her/his equals. This process is considered here as resulting from a dialogue between the child’s innate potentials and elements external to his/her self: the culture and the social relations. When such interaction is neither coercive nor lax the necessary conditions would be given to a healthy structuring of the self, that is, the process of human formation understood in its most rigorous sense and full of positiveness. The reflection developed here is rooted in the Humanist pedagogy, especially in the thinking of Rousseau, Rogers, and Dewey. The text concludes with a positive view of the possibilities of constructing autonomy but, within the limits and theoretical boundaries of the work, tries to show that this is a problematical possibility. That would be due to the difficulty of acting and comprehending democratically in a society that is simultaneously conducive and permissive.

Brandão, Ana Carolina; Selva, Ana Coelho V.

The article discusses the issue of mathematics textbooks used in child education analyzing specifically textbooks that deal with problem solving. Twelve series of textbooks were examined, and the analysis was developed around four pivotal aspects: the form of introduction to the concepts of addition and subtraction, the types of problems proposed, the use of illustrations in the description of the problem, and the type of record asked from children. It has been found that the textbooks examined display little variety with respect to the structure of problems. Thus, problems involving addition are limited to structures of combination and transformation, and the majority of subtraction problems are restricted to the structure of transformation. It has been observed that illustrations are often employed to supply the data related to the problem. In many cases, it has been noted that the illustration itself furnishes the answer to the problem. As to the types of record requested from children, it was clear that they are usually limited to writing the data supplied and the answer in predetermined spaces. Frequently the sign of the operation "expected" to solve the problem is indicated. The study concludes that the pre-school textbooks analyzed intend to work with the issue of problem solving but the situations proposed are repetitive and do not stimulate children to develop and contrast different strategies of solution.
  • Apresentação Em Foco: O Tempo Escolar

  • Cadências escolares, ritmos docentes Em Foco: O Tempo Escolar

This paper analyzes some of the concepts peculiar to the temporality of the school social life that structure the everyday rhythm of teachers. It assumes that time is a "category of logical thinking" originated in the rhythm of social life (Durkheim), and that such rhythmic character is a "concrete modality of social time" (Lefebvre and Régulier). This study is part of a research that seeks to discuss the experience of time for teachers of the 5th to 8th grades of the Primary Education and of the Secondary Education, taking into account the teachers’ links with the construction of their own teaching identities. The text is developed around three themes: the cadences of the interactions between educators and students, the academic calendar rhythms, and the tempo of school hours. The work concludes that teaching rhythms, although inscribed in the pace of modern life, have peculiarities related to the school cadences, to the pedagogical processes, and to the processes of human education. It is then the case to analyze the polyrhythmic nature of school times in their complexities and peculiarities so that we can understand the modulations and meanings of the experience of time as lived by the teacher, which is a constitutive experience of teaching identities.
  • A riqueza do tempo perdido Em Foco: O Tempo Escolar

This article presents analyses based on an ethnographic investigation carried out at an elementary state school in the outskirts of Curitiba, PR (Brazil). The field material was obtained from observations of a third year class made along thirteen months, interviews with pupils and teacher, and from the exam of documentation. The focus is directed to the practices of a successful teacher and to the organization of time in the classroom. Three categories are at the root of the analyses conducted here: distribution of time, right moment, and rhythm. The results of this study advance the understanding of the relationships between time in school, teaching, and evaluation. They indicate the need to reflect upon the temporality of the classroom in terms of two dimensions - chronos and kairós - which in the case under study coordinate and adjust themselves in the teaching environment, making room for a work strategy that privileges the individual attention to pupils. These dimensions also reveal forms of employing time that establish important settings for the production of relationships in the school everyday life.

Nesse sentido, as autoridades do ensino público procuraram regulamentar a obrigatoriedade do ensino, a freqüência, a duração do curso primário e a jornada escolar.

This text analyzes the ordering of time in primary state schools of the State of São Paulo at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, a period in which the school time architecture is instated and consolidated. The paper thus starts with the first detailed instructions related to time at schools, which are part of the Republican Reform of Public Schooling of 1892. It continues with the regulations elaborated during the First Republic, and progresses up to the creation of the São Paulo State Education Code of 1933, when a new era of state public education begins. This work tries to show that time is an ordering that is experimented and learnt at school. The study is based on documentary sources, especially legislation and official texts from Education Authorities. The analyses focus on two aspects: the political formulation of school time, and the pedagogical and disciplinary organization of time at school. With regard to the first aspect, the work shows how the ordering of time was driven by an aspiration of standardization and control. In that sense, state school authorities attempted to regulate on mandatory schooling, attendance rules, duration of primary education, and daily attendance time. As to the pedagogical and disciplinary aspect, this study stresses the meticulous ordering of school time including the curriculum rationalization - the selection and distribution of knowledge along grades, classes, and lessons, and the definition of timetables.
