This article offers a review of the literature about the organization of schooling in cycles in Brazil, pointing out the aspects that have been emphasized, the limitations and perspectives for the research on this topic. The review covered 147 texts, which were classified into five categories: (a) discussions of theoretical aspects related to cycles in school; (b) production and formulation of policies; (c) implementation of policies; (d) analysis of results of policies and impact on the performance of pupils; and (e) literature review. It is argued that the nature of policies and the analysis of the development of the discourse of these policies are aspects that have been neglected by the research about cycles. Apart from that, it is argued that the following aspects have been little explored: (a) the analysis of the implementation of the policy at school and in the classroom through observations and ethnographic research; (b) the analysis of the trajectory of the policies from their formulation to their implementation in the classroom; (c) studies including the opinion of managers and policymakers involved with schooling in cycles. The conclusion presents aspects that deserve to be studied in greater depth to bring about a clearer, wider, and more critical understanding of the cycles at Brazilian schools.

In this article I intend to discuss the meanings attributed to the experience of schooling by poor young people from the outskirts of Belo Horizonte who took part in a federal program of social inclusion - the Voluntary Civil Service Program (1996-2002) of the Ministry of Justice and Ministry for Work and Employment. The data and testimonies given were collected through participant observation and the conduction of interviews with youngsters, parents, and professionals (managers, instructors, and coordinators). In one of its phases, I looked into the school experiences of the subjects studied, trying to capture the meanings created, their values and expectations about their schooling. These youngsters had grown up under the impact of increasing social and economic inequalities during the last decades in Brazil. At the same time that they reaped the benefits of the expansion of schooling opportunities for the new generations, they experienced the access to education in an uneven manner. Looking at the subjects of this study, I could see that most of them had had a troubled school trajectory. Although they had more schooling than their parents, they had gone through an uncertain path, full of difficulties, coming in and out of school. At the same time, and despite experiencing situations of social and economic exclusion, the meanings they attributed to schooling are multiple. Education remains as a value for these youngsters, despite the tense and ambiguous relation they maintain with the school institution. They demand a quality school, with clear rules and procedures, but also a school where they are respected and recognized as subjects with rights.

Discussing how people can build up solidarity, and drawing from psychological assumptions that guarantee that such virtue is constructed by each one in their interaction with the environment, this research points to a path for the formation of more autonomous and solidary subjects: the cooperation as a strategy to conceive the construction of virtues. To this end, a comparative investigation was made of the judgments of children of both sexes, aged 6 and 7, in two kinds of environments: A - based on authoritarian relations; and B - in relationships of cooperation. Diagnostic tests for Jean Piaget's operatory behavior were used to investigate the parallel between the cognitive and moral structures of the subjects. The study also used the observation of the interpersonal relationships and the discussion of moral dilemmas split into two groups, and which fulfilled two conditions: to inspect the judgment of solidarity between peers, and in the presence of authority. Results demonstrate the existence of an evolution in the disposition of the subjects to be solidary, linked to the prospect of significant experiences of solidarity and mutual respect, characteristic of a cooperative environment. Such results allow us to envisage a "Pedagogy of Virtues" that takes in the development of cognitive structures and affective aspects to the construction of moral personalities.

A review is presented of the theoretical trajectory of the concepts of self and identity in Psychology, situating the socio-cultural-historical theoretical-methodological perspective, with an emphasis on the narrativist-dialogical version. The latter is taken as a contribution to the interpretation of processes of development of the self in the adolescent within the specific context of the deprivation of freedom to which teenage offenders are submitted. The narrativist-dialogical perspective conceives the self as a complex unity, the integrated system of culture and personal affections constructed through the social interaction that takes place in concrete socio-institutional contexts, having the human language as its key means of organization. The situations that disorganize one's sense of self, like the events associated to delinquency, activate subjective mechanisms of reorganization of the self, which promote development. Qualitative analyses of the narrative sequences produced by teenagers deprived of their freedom are presented, obtained from interactions with the researcher in structured situations. The objective is to extend the understanding of the formation of the narrative identity of the teenagers to specific contexts such as those involving violence and deprivation of freedom. The analysis of the narratives produced along the selected sequence of verbal interaction, performed under a micro-genetic perspective, reveals the dynamics of the processes of creation of new significations by the participants about themselves, the context, and the social processes associated to the detention procedure, pointing towards new lines of development of the self.

In this article the author reflects on the issue of justice and human rights, considering the demands of a deliberative democracy, along the lines of Habermas and, above all, of the proposals of a communicative democracy. Thus, at first, the author problematizes the relationships between democracy, justice, and human rights, giving special emphasis to the individualistic and merchantilized tendencies to see democracy and the rights, and to the deliberative and communicative conceptions of democracy, and their consequences in terms of justice and human rights. From this point, the reflection veers towards the field of education as another locus of justice, debating the issue of school justice and the concept of the school as a dialogical and communicative organization, highlighting, in Habermasian terms, the systemic and communicative functionalities that permeate it. The author concludes this framework by stressing, within the idea that the school is a place of many worlds and justices, the multiples rationalities mobilized by the school agents, who should make their choices aware of the fact that, when the communicative-emancipative rationality predominates over other types of rationality, justice and rights open up and universalize. Finally, this discussion is continued in the last part of the article, but now referred to the challenges of globalization understood in several senses, finishing with the reference, within a counter-hegemonic concept of globalization, to a "cosmopolitical democracy", supportive of a solidary and cosmo-citizenly cordiality based on the humans rights.

Gaston Bachelard (1884-1962), a philosopher who declared himself to be of a "double nature", a thinker in fields of knowledge as diverse as the epistemology of science and the metaphysics of poetic imagination, demands a reading of the duality and complexity of his life and work. The purpose of this article is therefore to investigate the dialogical relationship between the epistemology of science and the metaphysics of poetic imagination, two opposed, competing, and complementary traits of Bachelard's philosophy, often expressed by the epithets of "diurnal" and "nocturnal". To study the relationship between these two directions in Bachelard's thought, we start from the analysis of the ambivalence of the following pairs of concepts: epistemological obstacle & material imagination, and psychoanalysis of knowledge & phenomenological method, which structure, theoretically in the case of the former pair, and methodologically in the case of the latter pair, his epistemology of science and his metaphysics of poetic imagination. The results allow us to say that the joining of Bachelard's scientific epistemology and poetical metaphysics is represented in his concept of the "24-hour man". This complex, androgynous man, reader and thinker of the scientific ideas and of the poetical genesis, seems to be an image of the reconciliation of the antinomies expressed by the diurnal and nocturnal facets of the Bachelardian philosophy. Expanding on the imagetic analysis of the "24-hour man" through a myth-analytical hermeneutics, we find the two semblances of Bachelard's philosophy configured, respectively, in the myths of Apollo-Prometheus and Dionysus.

The present article deals with a particular aspect (the side of the supply) of one of the two main lines of research in the economics of education (economical aspects of educational systems). It shows the historical evolution, the current state, and the perspectives of development of the economic theories of education supply, covering the period from the early 1960s to the more recent contributions. It argues that the traditional theories of the economics of education (human capital and screening) have not dealt adequately with the supply aspect of education. Later, the concepts and the instruments of microeconomics of the enterprise were mobilized to try and map out the "technology of production of education". The approach to the functions of production of education initially based just on monetary fluxes was not enough to apprehend all the complexity involved in the process of the supply of education. An analysis of more recent texts reveals three promising paths to the development of the theories of the supply of education: (i) inclusion of non-monetary fluxes into the production functions; (ii) taking into account institutional and organizational aspects of the education system, and (iii) improvement of the econometric techniques for the estimation of the production functions. Lastly, the article discusses at more length the first of these paths.

This article seeks to discuss some works to which the success in learning to read and write must have as its main foundation the phonological awareness. Thus, we shall question specific points of the "Final Report of the workgroup on Child Literacy: the new paths" published by the Brazilian Federal House of Representatives in 2003, such as the methodology employed and the corresponding treatment of cleansing of the data, the phoneme/grapheme relation and the "key" notion of phonological awareness as the source of (un)successful reading and writing. We shall also debate works, to which is subjacent the search for an "ideal stage" of connection between consciousness, memory and acquisition of writing skills. The authors also evoke the importance of the phonological awareness to the acquisition of orthographic rules, and point out the existence of a conscious subject who evolves in stages of development. Starting from our field of study, namely the acquisition of language, and questioning and opposing the methodology of selection of statistically relevant data through the experimental method, we try to show, using the analysis of singular mistakes, that the relation between subject and language cannot be based on a metalinguistic analysis, or we risk losing sight of the subject's singularity. In this way, we argue that beyond the competencies and abilities that the pupil, according to those studies, must develop/acquire through the proposed phonic method, there is always a language which, in its symbolic workings, entwines the subject in its weaving.

    Moreira, Adelson Fernandes; Borges, Oto

We present the results of an ethnomethodological study about a Physics classroom, developing a descriptive approach to this learning environment. Activities involving simulations, pen-and-paper exercises, and experiments were arranged to expose students to various learning environments. The interactions among some groups of students were video- and audio-recorded, and analyzed. When comparing them, we highlight and analyze situations in which the interactions experienced in the different environments contribute to the description of the characteristic features of the practice of teacher and of students. The production of narratives is the main instrument of description. We identify the 'ethnomethod' of directing the interactions to obtain the correct answer. We show how this procedure, shared by teacher and students, interferes with the questions made to the teacher, and in the way the latter exercises the listening in the dialogue with the students. The classroom is characterized as a place of simultaneous actions that occur beyond the teacher's control. We discuss the expressed concepts of objective and activity as a way of dealing with this impossibility of control. We call attention to the diversity of styles of students' conducts, and we analyze its implications. Finally, we discuss the consequences of seeing the classroom as a place where a specific social practice occurs, particularly with respect to the obstacles to the transfer to its interior of the results of researches that imply in modifications to this practice.
