  • A NOÇÃO DE EQUIVALÊNCIA DE KOLLER: UNIVERSALISMO RELATIVIZADO? Artigos

    Minchin, Carolina Ribeiro

Abstract This article discusses the concept of translation equivalence as suggested by Werner Koller in the 7th edition of his book, Einführung in die Übersetzungswissenschaft (2004). The analysis is based on a comparison of the author’s views on language and translation. Assuming, as proposed by Kopetzki (1996), that a translation scholar’s perspective on language has a decisive influence on his or her view about translation, the main objective of this paper is to demonstrate that Koller favours a relativistic understanding of language and that, in some respects, his take on translation and translation equivalence challenge the universalistic character that is usually attributed to this concept in Translation Studies.

Abstract The discussion about the status of the translated literary text and the position of the translator is ever-present in the field of Translation Studies. Sensitive issues such as authorship, authorship in translation and the position of the translated text within the receiving literary system keep theoreticians busy, as well as discussions about canon in literature and canon in translated literature. A less evident topic is the existence of canonical translations which are regarded as “definitive” in the receiving literary system or as a model for subsequent translations. I intend to show in this paper that the phenomenon I call canonical translation is neither an isolated phenomenon nor restricts itself to peripheral literary systems.
  • TRADUZIR “FALSAS” TRADUÇÕES: O MANUSCRITO INVENTADO Artigo

Abstract The topos of the rediscovered manuscript appears in classical antiquity, crosses the Renaissance and flourishes to date; this narrative fiction, in which the text is presented as a translation of an imaginary original, raises to the real translator a series of challenging questions. The purpose of this paper is to promote reflection, analyzing some concrete examples on translations of these texts; to demonstrate how the new translation of the text, in a game of mirrors and its refractions, shows also traces of his imaginary original, forming a palimpsest of three cultures, a triple text layer from which emerge the voices of several authors.
  • TRADUÇÃO DA BÍBLIA HEBRAICA EM DEZ VERSÕES BRASILEIRAS Artigo

    Ribeiro, Osvaldo Luiz

Abstract The aim of this article is to analyze ten different Brazilian versions of the Hebrew Bible focusing on four different passages, which are: 1 Re 22.21 and Sl 53.3.5.7. The methodology consisted of the following steps: selection of ten representative vernacular versions of the Hebrew Bible, the choosing of passages to be compared, translation of the Hebrew Bible passages, analysis of the passages in the Hebrew Bible, and the Hebrew Bible translation. The result revealed that, with only a few exceptions, the versions systematically and jointly make the same types of deviations in the translation of the Hebrew text. Since the chosen passages do not present significant difficulties to the translator/interpreter, there are hypotheses for the explanation of the result, such as, for example, theological pressures operating in the translation process.
  • NO PRINCÍPIO ERA A PALAVRA, MAS A PALAVRA FOI TRADUZIDA PARA OS SINAIS Artigo

Abstract In spite of what is considered sacred by the Judeo-Christian religions, the Bible is also filled with poetry, whose translation to Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) can help us understand in what ways the translation repertoires are formed in the literary polysystem of the Brazilian deaf culture. In this article, I shall reflect upon the relationship between ideology, translation and literature in that polysystem from the point of view of the translation of the Bible.
  • LUCAS JOSÉ D’ALVARENGA, TRADUTOR DE SAFO Artigo

Abstract This paper aims at examining the retranslation of a Sappho’s ode, made by Lucas José d’Alvarenga in 1830. Taking into account his own work and five other translations, a comparison was made using the concept of authorship from Venuti and the retranslation from Berman.

Abstract The purpose of this article is to analyze a 2014 production of Shakespeare’s King Lear translated and adapted by Geraldo Carneiro, directed by Elias Andreato, and starring Juca de Oliveira in a solo performance in which he plays six roles. The actor performs the role of a narrator and also incorporates the different characters, speaking their lines and quite often establishing a dialogue between them. The main features of the adapted text will be examined, namely: (I) the cuts in the plot, resulting in the omission of the subplot involving the Duke of Gloucester and his two sons, Edmund and Edgar, and in an early ending, at the point when Lear and Cordelia are reunited, without ever reaching the tragic denouement with both of them dying; (II) the use of narration, placing Lear, the narrator-protagonist, in a chronological time ahead of the action he describes; (III) the use of dialogue between Lear and the other five characters of the play, in which the single actor simultaneously plays different characters in interaction; (IV) the use of a combination of prose, blank verse and rhyming verse following the pattern of Shakespeare’s dramatic poetry; and (V) the presence of interpolated fragments of other works by Shakespeare. Aspects directly linked to the staging, such as scenery and costume design, will also be examined.
  • UMA APLICAÇÃO DA TEORIA DO GATO DE SHRÖDINGER PARA ENTENDER O APOCALÍPTICO E CONTEMPORÂNEO FINNEGANS WAKE? Artigo

Abstract The text that follows proposes an application of the Shrödinger’s Cat Theory from quantum mechanics in the understanding and translation of a given excerpt of Finnegans Wake by James Joyce. In order to carry out such exercise, we found support in the notion of open work (ECO, 2010), and in the understanding that the aforementioned book is a contemporary text (AGAMBEN, 2009) possibly resulting from the author’s wander (OLIVIERI-GODET, 2010).
  • A TRADUÇÃO DE BOUMKŒUR, DE RACHID DJAÏDANI, PARA O PORTUGUÊS DO BRASIL: UM PANORAMA DOS PRINCIPAIS DESAFIOS Artigo

Abstract This article is based on a research project entitled “Boumkœur, de Rachid Djaïdani: estudo e tradução para o português do Brasil” (2017) [“Analyzing and translating Boumkœur, by Rachid Djaïdani, into Brazilian Portuguese”]. For this project, conducted during a degree in Modern Languages at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF), I tried to offer an analysis and a translation of Djaïdani’s novel. The scope of this article is however considerably more limited insofar as I present a partial overview of the translation of three excerpts from Boumkœur, which are representative of issues concerning the translation of cultural marks, specific social dialects and poetic texts. In this analytical and translational work I opted for the practice of an “ethics of difference” (VENUTI, 2002) that aims at reconciling the concepts of “foreignization” and “domestication” (VENUTI, 2008).
  • O TRADUTOR COMO TESTEMUNHA Artigo

    Basevi, Anna

Abstract The testimony literature involves the reader in a peculiar way, because his responsibility of listening (Jeanne Marie Gagnebin) forces him to position himself, through a deep reading, within a witness-community (Lina Insana) that guarantees the transmission of the narration. As the reader, the translator too. Taking into account narrative and stylistic aspects of the testimonial literature, it is possible to draw up a proposal that enriches the ethics and practice of its translation by identifying the listener / reader / translator as a witness. At the same time, useful interrogatives are sent to the translation in general, considered here, following Henri Meschonnic, as a relation between two texts. The reflection is conducted from the analysis of translation problems and representation in Se questo è un uomo, the first book of Primo Levi, an Auschwitz survivor and great writer of the twentieth century.
  • A RADICALIDADE DE CLARICE LISPECTOR TRADUZIDA PARA O SISTEMA LITERÁRIO ANGLÓFONO Article

Abstract This article aims to investigate whether Clarice’s radical use of language was somehow achieved in translations and especially in the retranslations of her work into English, or whether this radicality itself made the Claricean legacy an obstacle to its absorption in the English-speaking literary system. I will deal with Perto do coração selvagem in Pontiero’s (1990) and Entrekin’s (2012) translations and the short story “A menor mulher do mundo” in Pontiero’s (1960) and Dodson’s (2015) translations.
  • TRADUÇÃO E CIÊNCIA NO ILUMINISMO LUSOBRASILEIRO: INTERTEXTUALIDADE EM EPÍGRAFES E DIVISAS Article

    Oliveira Harden, Alessandra

Abstract Researchers working with translation history have been benefiting from information stemming from editorial paratexts, and these elements have also become an acceptable tool for science historians. For both groups of researchers, crucial information concerning intellectual and cultural affiliations can be unveiled by paratexts, taken as evidence of a written work’s materiality in a given point in time and space, as well as of the intervention of authors, translators and editors in the way such work is to be interpreted. The revealing role of paratextual elements is even more prominent if one is interested in intertextual connections, which is the case with this paper. Here focus is given to epigraphs and mottoes, in a discussion based on the content of title pages of translations produced within the Luso-Brazilian Enlightenment. Published at the turn of the 18th century in Lisbon and under the supervision of Brazilian-born Friar José Mariano da Conceição Velloso, these translation aimed at the progress of the Portuguese Kingdom through the dissemination of “useful science.” Their epigraphs and mottoes are relevant material for translation and science historians alike, as they allow for a deeper understanding of cultural networks decisive to the dissemination of enlightened ideas in Portuguese language.
  • O TRADUTOR (E O) DICIONARISTA Artigo

    Dezotti, Maria Celeste Consolin

Abstract Translation makes the interaction between two linguistic worlds, the source language and the target language. The use of dictionaries is indispensable for translating dead languages, such as latin and ancien greek. On the other hand, this interaction often benefits the target language, which incorporates new words. This approach focuses translations of greek texts into portuguese language. We consider dictionaries on two aspects: (I) as it is a guide to speak a language - and to its reception, especially in relation to dead languages -, in ancient greek dictionaries words and meanings are added whenever new texts are discovered; (II) the meanings’ richness of some greek words encourages translators to transliterate them, and when they become usual, they can be included in a dictionary. This is possible because languages’ lexicon is open. This statement is valid even if for a dead language.

Abstract Sooner or later death will affect everyone, everywhere. However, this harsh reality is faced differently across cultures. Obituaries can help unveil some of those differences and their impact on translation. Using corpus linguistics as methodology, we aim to investigate if - and to what extent - a comparable American English-Brazilian Portuguese corpus of obituaries can help with the task of raising students’ awareness of cultural peculiarities encountered in the same genre written in different languages and their consequences for equivalence retrieval. In order to accomplish our task, we selected texts published in Brazilian and NorthAmerican newspapers in 2015 and 2017. Despite addressing an everyday subject, obituaries are little explored academically. Nevertheless, this neglect is not proportional across countries, but it results from the popularity enjoyed by the genre. While obituaries are widely read in the United States, in Brazil they are rare, almost solely dedicated to famous deceased. Qualitative and quantitative analyses showed that terminology lacks in Portuguese due to cultural differences regarding the theme and that the lack of contact with the genre, in addition to ritual differences encountered in both countries/cultures, can help explain difficulties faced by Brazilian undergraduate students of Translation to render NorthAmerican obituaries into Portuguese.
  • VARIAÇÕES SEMÂNTICAS DE VALORAÇÃO EM REINSTANCIAÇÕES PORTUGUESAS E BRASILEIRAS DE THINGS FALL APART E ARROW OF GOD Artigo

Abstract This article expands the investigation in Dias (2018), on semantic variations of appraisal in Brazilian translations of two of Chinua Achebe’s novels, Things Fall Apart (1994[1959]) and Arrow of God (1969[1964]), to the Portuguese translations of these texts. It aims at identifying semantic variations of appraisal in the retranslations as well as testing the retranslation hypothesis originated in Berman (1990). According to theoretical assumptions in this text, the translation of a literary text would be an “incomplete” act that could only achieve completion through retranslations. Previous works on translation of literary texts do not usually investigate appraisal from a discourse-semantics perspective, disregarding it in unfolding texts and using a corpus analysis methodology. Dias (2018) draws on a discourse-semantics model to study Brazilian translations as re-instantiations. This work focuses on excerpts of the Portuguese reinstantiations Tudo se desmorona (2008), from Things Fall Apart, and A flecha de Deus (1979), from Arrow of God. The study uses appraisal analysis as a method to investigate patterns of evaluative configurations of attitude, engagement and graduation in the excerpts studied. The findings, compared to those in Dias (2018), suggest there are semantic variations between the pairs of re-instantiations regarding the appraisal mode, the different coupling and commitment of values, and non-re-instantiations or the instantiation of new values. These results suggest the two reinstantiations are different types of paraphrases of the source text. They also confirm the retranslation hypothesis.
  • A TRADUÇÃO DA PARTÍCULA MODAL WOHL PARA O PORTUGUÊS: UMA INVESTIGAÇÃO DO ESFORÇO DE PROCESSAMENTO DE PARTICIPANTES BRASILEIROS E ALEMÃES Artigo

    Aquino, Marceli

Abstract Using the Relevance Theory as guideline we investigate the processing effort of the modal particle (MP) wohl in the linguistic pair german/portuguese in post-editing tasks. As experimental background, we use three distinct research tools: the program Translog-II; the eyetracker Tobii T60; retrospective reports (free and guided). Sixteen participants, eight Brazilian and eight German, post-edited to Portuguese three machine translation inputs in German containing the MP wohl in three different positions related to the same sentence. The results here presented tend to confirm the hypothesis by GUTT (1998) and the study on processing analysis performed by ALVES (2007), which show that the relation between effort and effect does not obey a linear relation among themselves. Therefore, the analysis of how modal particles are processed in post-editing tasks tends to show that different cognitive environments imply distinct allocation of the minimum cognitive effort needed to achieve a relevant contextual effect.
  • EDUCAÇÃO CONTINUADA NO ACERVO TERMISUL: UM ESTUDO DA LINGUAGEM CIENTÍFICA BASEADO EM CORPUS E SUA APLICAÇÃO À DISCIPLINA DE VERSÃO PARA O FRANCÊS Artigo

    Loguercio, Sandra Dias

Abstract This paper describes a project of continuing education, open to Language students, who are Brazilian Portuguese speakers, and their application to the subject of Translation (from Portuguese to French). This project comprises a phase of research, in which we investigated the scientific language based on the study of discursive genres and on procedures of Corpus Linguistics, and a phase of didactization of material and of investigative activities aiming at applying. The research, focusing initially on scientific summary, is based on a contrastive study of the languages, which covers textual analysis and linguistic analysis with a tool for automatic analysis of corpora. Each one of these studies enables a learning object, organized in sequences of activities available online. Such activities provide for the student a learning experience through researching and they also contribute to data enrichment and research improvement. Concerning the didactic results, on one hand, students gain autonomy when learning linguistics. On the other hand, they develop a critical view on the production of their own texts. And those are two essential subcompetencies for acquiring translation competence.
  • INGLÊS INSTRUMENTAL E A EXPERTISE COMPARTILHADA: CONVERGÊNCIAS COM A TRADUÇÃO E A TERMINOLOGIA Artigo

    Barros, Silvia Helena Benchimol

Abstract This paper critically addresses aspects related to the teaching of the English language in specialized texts in the scope of English for Specific Purposes. It problematizes this approach within the context of language courses - focusing on the reading competence - EAP modality (STREVENS, 1977; HYLAND, 2006). It establishes theoretical convergences with the fields of Translation and Terminology. The perspective adopted aims to contribute to the development of the agents involved and to the improvement of pedagogical practice, broadening new paths and theoretical methodological possibilities. The motivation for this study emerges from the growing and expressive pursuit of reading competence enhancement in texts with scientific content in foreign languages by professionals and academics from different domains. This demand is characterized by well-defined professional targets associated to mechanisms of acceleration of results stemming from the exogenous pressure for qualification. It is intended to describe the peculiarities of the teaching context where these reflections emerge from and connect them to some methodological procedures employed in solving textual exploratory difficulties supported by translation strategies and terminological knowledge.
  • LA PRESENCIA DEL PORTUGUÉS EN PRENSA ESCRITA URUGUAYA: CÓMO EL MUNDIAL 2014 NOS SOLTÓ LA PLUMA Artículo

Gorrostorrazo, Mayte; Igoa, Rosario Lázaro; Lorier, Leticia

Abstract This paper addresses the use of Portuguese in the Uruguayan press during the 2014 World Cup from the point of view of Translation Studies, Linguistics and Communication Studies. For the analysis of the corpus, built of the editions of la diaria newspaper between June 1st and July 15th, 2014, we use the concept of foreignism as a procedure in which there is a translation operation (BARBOSA, 1990). The systematization is based on the classification of foreignisms according to linguistic characteristics, the context of use and its relation with the target language, according to Barbosa classification of transfers (1990). The results suggest that the recurrence to Portuguese has a rhetorical objective, sometimes humorous and associated to the representations of Brazil (PAGANOTTI, 2007) and to the perception of Portuguese as intelligible for the Spanish speaker.
