Resumo A presente entrevista com o sociólogo paulista Gabriel Cohn, foi realizada em 2019 por André Botelho, Antonio Brasil Jr. e Elina Pessanha, e inclui breves notas biográficas e o registro de sua experiência como estudante e depois professor da Universidade de São Paulo. Provocado pelos entrevistadores, Gabriel fala sobre a importância dos autores clássicos, a influência da teoria social alemã, e os desafios teóricos a enfrentar para produzir uma análise ‘fina’ da sociedade.

Abstract This interview with the São Paulo sociologist Gabriel Cohn was conducted in 2019 by André Botelho, Antonio Brasil Jr. and Elina Pessanha, and includes short biographical notes and a record of his experience as a student and later professor at the University of São Paulo. Prompted by the interviewers, Gabriel speaks about the importance of the classic authors, the influence of German social theory, and the theoretical challenges faced in producing a ‘fine-grained’ analysis of society.

Resumo Dois temas contrastantes, do destino e da promessa, caracterizam as posições de Max Weber e Theodor W. Adorno. Ambos compartilham preocupações básicas a respeito da natureza e das tendências de sociedades modernas, marcadas pelo Estado nacional no âmbito político, pelas organizações privadas racionalmente organizadas no âmbito econômico e pelo predomínio de empresas privadas no âmbito da produção e distribuição de formas com conteúdo cultural. Para fazer frente aos problemas analíticos envolvidos, ambos concentram a atenção, por ângulos diferentes e incompatíveis, na dimensão significativa dos processos sociais. No presente artigo argumenta-se que, a despeito dessas aproximações e do frequente argumento de que Adorno deve muito a Weber, ambos enfrentam problemas similares mediante linguagens distintas, com base em pressupostos igualmente distintos e sem tradução direta entre si. Algumas implicações disso são examinadas.

Abstract Two contrasting themes, destiny and promise, characterize the positions of Max Weber and Theodor W. Adorno. Both share basic concerns about the nature and tendencies of modern societies, marked by the nation state in the political sphere, by rationally organized private organizations in the economic sphere, and by the predominance of private enterprises in the sphere of production and distribution of forms of cultural content. In response to the analytic problems involved, both focus attention - from different and incompatible angles - on the meaningful dimension of social processes. This article argues that despite these approximations and the frequent argument that Adorno is heavily indebted to Weber, both confront similar problems through distinct languages, based on equally distinct premises with no direct translation between them. Some implications of this are examined.

Resumo Apresenta-se o projeto luhmaniano de atualização sociológica pela perspectiva de seus estudos sobre a covariação de estrutura social e semântica. Evidencia-se a importância dessa questão no desenho da teoria dos sistemas e destaca-se a relevância dos estudos de Luhmann a respeito. Com isso, espera-se chamar a atenção para vertente menos reconhecida da moderna teoria dos sistemas, assim como oferecer outra via de acesso a seus desenvolvimentos.

Abstract This article presents the Luhmannian project of updating social theory from the viewpoint of his studies of the covariation of social structure and semantics. It demonstrates the significance of this issue in the design of systems theory and highlights the relevance of Luhmann’s studies of the topic. The aim is to draw attention to a less recognized aspect of modern systems theory, as well as to offer another way of exploring its developments.

O presente texto tem como objetivo tecer comentários a respeito da crítica de Cohn a Max Weber em Crítica e resignação, tendo em vista o diálogo implícito desse livro com a tradição marxista da teoria crítica. Sem buscar esgotar o tema, a ideia é debater algumas questões referentes à separação entre ação e pensamento para Weber, bem como revisitar sua teoria da racionalização tendo em vista a maneira como a teoria crítica abordou esses mesmos problemas.

Abstract Is Gabriel Cohn a Weberian? This text comments on Cohn’s critique of Max Weber in Crítica e Resignação, focusing on the book’s implicit dialogue with the Marxist tradition of critical theory. Without attempting to exhaust the topic, the idea is to debate various questions regarding the separation between action and thought for Weber, as well as to revisit his theory of rationalization, taking into account the way in which critical theory approached these same problems.

Resumo O artigo retoma o processo formativo de Gabriel Cohn a partir de seu vínculo com a cadeira de sociologia I da Faculdade de Filosofia, Letras e Ciências da Universidade de São Paulo. Desse prisma, busca compreender a sua produção teórica inicial à luz das preocupações dos sociólogos reunidos no Centro de Sociologia Industrial e do Trabalho. Em especial, examinamos o artigo de Cohn na coletânea Política e revolução social, o seu mestrado e o artigo “Problemas da industrialização no século XX”. Em seu segundo momento, acentuando o processo de autonomização intelectual de Cohn, cuja marca teórica pode ser vista a partir da incorporação das temáticas frankfurtianas em seus trabalhos nos anos 1970 - como em sua livre-docência sobre Max Weber -, o artigo examina as reflexões de Cohn sobre a obra de Florestan Fernandes como um momento privilegiado da autorreflexão sobre a tradição intelectual na qual se formou.

Abstract The article explores Gabriel Cohn’s formative process, sett- ing out from his connection to the Chair of Sociology I of the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Sciences of the University of São Paulo. Adopting this perspective, it seeks to understand his early theoretical production in light of the concerns of the sociologists organized at the Centre for the Sociology of Industry and Labour. In particular, it examines Cohn’s article in the collection Política e Revolução Social, his master’s degree and the article “Problemas da industrialização no século XX.” In the second part, highlighting Cohn’s growing intellectual autonomy, whose theoretical imprint can be seen in the incorporation of Frankfurtian themes in his production from the 1970s and, especially, in his book on Max Weber, the article examines Cohn’s reflections on Florestan Fernandes’s work as a key moment for the self-reflection on the intellectual tradition in which he was trained.

Resumo O artigo traça um paralelo entre as concepções de Theodor Adorno e Eric Hobsbawm sobre o jazz e intenta uma crítica dos argumentos envolvidos nas concepções estéticas dos autores sobre o gênero musical. Na obra de Adorno, busca discutir o alcance do conceito de indústria cultural e suas considerações em torno do fetichismo e da regressão da audição, resultando em apreciações que ressaltam o caráter ideológico e os traços conformistas do jazz. O contraponto encontrado nos escritos de Hobsbawm destaca no jazz a ampliação das fronteiras no campo da música popular, imbricada às suas origens populares, e a elevação estética dos ouvintes.

Abstract The article draws a parallel between the ideas of Theodor Adorno and Eric Hobsbawm of jazz and attempts to critique the arguments involved in the authors’ aesthetic conceptions of this musical genre. In Adorno’s work, it discusses the scope of the concept of culture industry and his considerations on fetishism and regression of hearing, which result in appreciations that emphasize jazz’s ideological character and conformist traits. The counterpoint found in the writings of Hobsbawm emphasizes jazz’s expanding of the borders of the field of popular music, intertwined with its popular origins, and the aesthetic elevation of its listeners.

Resumo Neste artigo, analiso a organização social da produção de mídia xavante no projeto Aldeia Digital, as características e especificidades sociais da sociedade xavante refletidas na organização do projeto Aldeia Digital. Para explicar como os alunos do projeto se organizaram em grupos, relaciono esses grupos com a estrutura social e o sistema político xavante. A hipótese do artigo é de que a formação dos grupos do projeto e a interação de seus membros foram estabelecidas a partir de categorias presentes na estrutura social xavante. Nesse sentido, a introdução da mídia e dos meios de comunicação na comunidade não foi suficiente para transformar as relações sociais na aldeia xavante de Sangradouro.

Abstract In this article, I analyze the social organization of Xavante media production during the Digital Village Project, and explore how student involvement in the latter reflects the social characteristics and specificities of the Xavante community. To explain how project participants organized themselves into groups, I connect these groupings to the Xavante social structure and political system. My hypothesis is that the formation of the groups making up the project and the interaction of their members were established through categories already present in Xavante social structure. In this sense, we can conclude that the introduction to media production in the community is not enough to change the social relations prevailing in Sangradouro village.

Resumo A popularidade crescente da opção de correr como um estilo de vida vem se constituindo como uma tendência global que caracteriza nossos mundos contemporâneos. O running, tal como costumam definir seus praticantes, estrutura-se em torno a um conjunto de práticas e representações que excedem em muito uma escolha pontual de sair a correr. Essa disciplina esportiva mobiliza um conjunto de configurações emocionais que se cristalizam em determinados ideais de comportamento, relações e sentimentos que definem um “verdadeiro” corredor. Neste artigo, a partir de um conjunto diverso de recursos etnográficos, são analisados os modos pelos quais os corredores constroem um universo moral que os distingue não apenas daqueles que não adotam esse estilo de vida mas também dos que não encarnam os seus ideais virtuosos por completo.

Abstract The huge increase in running as a lifestyle choice has become a global trend characteristic of our contemporary world. Running, as its enthusiasts usually call it using the English term, is structured around a set of practices and representations that go far beyond a specific choice of ‘going for a run.’ The sport mobilizes a series of emotional configurations that crystallize into certain ideals of behaviour, relationships, and feelings that define a ‘true’ runner. Setting out from a diverse set of ethnographic resources, the article analyses the ways in which runners build a moral universe that distinguishes them not only from those who have not adopted such a lifestyle, but also from those who do not completely embody their supposedly virtuous ideals.

Resumo O artigo investiga as relações entre as políticas urbanas e a mobilidade residencial com os processos gentrificadores do espaço a partir do estudo de dois bairros de Belo Horizonte, Santa Tereza e Anchieta. Para tanto, utilizamos vários tipos de dados, tais como os da Pesquisa de Origem e Destino, que identificam a mobilidade residencial; os do Censo Demográfico sobre domicílios e moradores; os da Prefeitura sobre a produção imobiliária e as políticas públicas urbanas vigentes, bem como dados qualitativos, oriundos de entrevistas e observação nos bairros. Os resultados mostram como os processos são distintos: em Santa Tereza, as políticas urbanas implementadas como resposta à mobilização dos moradores têm conseguido barrar a gentrificação; no Anchieta, a maior liberalidade das políticas urbanas, que não suscitou nos moradores reações organizadas, tem permitido uma renovação em algumas partes do bairro, que identificamos como gentrificação por nova construção.

Abstract This article investigates the relations between urban policies, the residential mobility and the gentrification of urban space, based on research in two neighbourhoods of Belo Horizonte: Santa Tereza and Anchieta. Several types of data were used in the study, including the Origin and Destination Survey, which identifies residential mobility in neighbourhoods, the Demographic Census datasets on households and residents, and municipal data on real estate dynamics and current urban policies. Qualitative data from interviews and local observations has also been used. The results demonstrate how the processes are distinct. In Santa Tereza, the urban policies implemented as an outcome of resident mobilization have managed to stop gentrification. In Anchieta, the greater liberality of urban policies, which did not elicit any organized responses from residents, has allowed renovation in some parts of the neighbourhood, which we identified as new-build gentrification.

Resumo Para a juventude o espaço público urbano corresponde a um campo de sociabilidade e de criatividade, utilizado como palco para o desenvolvimento de práticas que se desenrolam fora da alçada das instituições e do adulto. A generalização da internet e dos dispositivos móveis teve impacto na forma como o espaço é hoje vivido e representado pelos jovens. Aquilo que tradicionalmente era entendido pelas ciências sociais como “culturas de rua juvenis” não pode ser hoje pensado como próprio apenas do espaço físico, posto que possui extensão virtual. Referimos, por isso, culturas de rua híbridas, que navegam entre o mundo offline e online. O artigo avalia essa matéria partindo de uma revisão da literatura e de dados de diversos projetos de pesquisa desenvolvidos ao longo da última década.

Abstract For young people, urban public space comprises a field of sociability and creativity, used as a stage for the development of a series of practices that unfold outside the competence of the adult world and its institutions. The generalization of the internet and mobile devices has had an impact on how space is lived and represented today by young people. What was traditionally understood by the social sciences as “youth street cultures” cannot be thought of as existing only in physical space, but equally as possessing a virtual extension. We speak, therefore, of “hybrid street cultures,” which navigate between the offline and online world. This article assesses the theme based on a review of the literature and the data from diverse research projects developed over the last decade.

Resumo Pesquisadores de movimentos sociais têm investigado os motivos que levam a ação coletiva a tomar determinada forma em determinado recorte espaçotemporal. Tal problema foi abordado pela literatura a partir de diferentes conceitos e debates. O artigo analisa três dessas ferramentas conceituais, revisando, ainda, sua apropriação pela literatura nacional sobre movimentos sociais: repertórios, escolhas táticas e performances. Os autores argumentam, em primeiro lugar, que cada um desses conceitos e debates está relacionado a uma perspectiva analítica distinta que direciona essa problemática geral a problemas de pesquisa específicos. Sugerem, em segundo lugar, que sua apropriação pela literatura nacional foi desigual, privilegiando o conceito de repertórios. Abstract Scholars of social movement have long investigated the reasons why collective action takes a certain form in each period of time and space. This problem has been approached by the literature through a number of different concepts and debates. In this paper, we analyse three of these conceptual tools, also reviewing their appropriation by the Brazilian literature on social movements: repertoires, tactical choices, and performances. First, we argue that each of these concepts and debates is related to a different analytical framework that redirects this general problem towards specific research questions. Second, we suggest that their appropriation by the Brazilian literature has unevenly favoured the concept of repertoires. Finally, we argue that the articulation of these concepts can provide a complex response to this general problem, helping us move beyond theoretical dichotomies and the obstacles imposed by their uneven appropriation in Brazil.

Resumo Encerrado o ciclo político e econômico que deu origem ao fenômeno conhecido como a nova classe média no Brasil, neste artigo argumentamos que aquela leitura não se limitava a constatar a elevação do rendimento e poder de consumo de milhares de família, inserindo-se em uma narrativa mais ampla que tem dificultado a investigação de seus desdobramentos sociais. Assim, nosso primeiro objetivo é desenvolver, com o suporte de dados empíricos provenientes da Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicílios (Pnad-IBGE), uma interpretação alternativa acerca das mudanças observadas na sociedade brasileira nos últimos anos. Nosso segundo objetivo é refletir, com o auxílio de dados da Pesquisa Sobre a Classe Média (Cesop-Unicamp-2008), e também de pesquisas de cunho qualitativo previamente elaboradas pelos autores, sobre os possíveis impactos daquelas mudanças nas expectativas dos indivíduos e, assim, em suas percepções e atitudes perante as enormes desigualdades ainda presentes no país.

Abstract After the end of the political and economic cycle that gave rise to the phenomenon that became known as the Brazilian new middle class, in this article we argue that this reading was not limited to verifying the increase in income and consume power of thousands of families, but also framed it within a broader narrative that has hindered the sociological investigation of the phenomenon. Thus, our first objective is to develop, with the support of empirical data from the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD-IBGE), an alternative interpretation of the changes observed in Brazilian society in recent years. Our second objective is to reflect, with the help of data from the Survey on the Middle Class (CESOP-UNICAMP-2008), and also from qualitative research previously prepared by the authors, on the possible impacts of these changes on the expectations of individuals and, thus, on their perceptions and attitudes towards the enormous inequalities still present in the country.

Resumo O artigo analisa como a expressão circuito fechado usada por Florestan Fernandes assume posição central em seus estudos sobre a sociedade brasileira, constituindo-se em um dos apoios teórico-metodológicos de sua reflexão. Assim, sua utilização proporciona o questionamento de vários ângulos utilizados na interpretação do Brasil: a visão linear da história, a ideia de dualismo do país, a proposta analítica de formação, a aceitação da autonomia das instituições. Florestan Fernandes prioriza a pergunta sobre os efeitos sociais e políticos advindos de uma formação econômico-social na periferia do capitalismo, formação peculiar, pois não apenas soma, mas combina, na manutenção de seu perfil, modernidade e arcaísmos. A pergunta sobre a coexistência no Brasil do capitalismo moderno e da desigualdade, que limita o acesso aos direitos políticos e sociais, o induz a avançar tanto no estudo dos grupos como das modalidades de ação. O artigo indaga, ainda, sobre a pertinência da utilização dessa expressão para enfocar os embates sociais e políticos contemporâneos.

Abstract The article analyses the central role played by the term “closed circuit” (circuito fechado) in Florestan Fernandes’s studies of Brazilian society. This is one of the main theoretical and methodological tools of his reflection, which allows him to question different approaches used for interpreting Brazil: the linear vision of history, the idea of Brazil’s dualism, the analytical proposition based on the notion of formation, the acceptance of the autonomy of institutions. The article also asks whether the term is pertinent to contemporary social and political conflicts.

Resumo Busco nesse registro de pesquisa circunscrever de um ponto de vista sociológico o entrelaçamento entre subjetividade individual e cosmopolitismo na cultura brasileira no e a partir do memorialismo de Pedro Nava. Duas experiências de pesquisa o informam. No ponto de partida original, atividades múltiplas em torno de Nava nos últimos dez anos: como pesquisador, professor em sala de aula, orientador de tese e organizador da reedição da sua obra. Na outra extremidade, que, no entanto, não é apenas um ponto de chegada, mas também um novo ponto de partida, essas experiências são em parte reorientadas com vistas ao projeto coletivo “Minas mundo: o cosmopolitismo na cultura brasileira” que estamos iniciando numa grande rede de pesquisa e cooperação interdisciplinar, nacional e internacional.

Abstract In this research record, I outline a sociological approach to the entanglement between individual subjectivity and cosmopolitanism in Brazilian culture, in and through the memoirs of Pedro Nava. Two research experiences inform the text. At the original point of departure, multiple activities concerning Nava over the last ten years - as researcher, classroom teacher, thesis supervisor, and editor of republications of his work. At the other end, which is not, though, merely a point of arrival but also a fresh point of departure, these experiences are partly reoriented towards a collective project, “Minas world: cosmopolitanism in Brazilian culture,” which we are launching in a large national and international network of interdisciplinary research and cooperation.
