New insights into the formation of azlactone heterocycles bearing different substituents are hereby presented. The sum of both kinetic and thermodynamic factors contributes for the formation of 2-alkyl or 2-aryl substituted azlactones, while the cyclization of 2-alcoxy azlactones is less favored. These results are in perfect accordance with experimental observations obtained by infrared (IR) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI(+)-MS) of the crude reaction mixture.

Objetivou-se, neste trabalho, avaliar a eficiência das distribuições fatigue life, Frechet, gama, gama generalizada, logística generalizada, log-logística, Nakagami, beta, Burr, Dagum, Weibull e hiperbólica, para a descrição da distribuição diamétrica de povoamentos de teca submetidos a desbaste em diferentes idades. Os dados utilizados neste estudo foram provenientes de 238 parcelas permanentes retangulares de 490 m² de área, instaladas em povoamentos de Tectona grandis L. f. no Estado do Mato Grosso, Brasil. As parcelas foram mensuradas, aos 34, 43, 55, 68, 81, 82, 92, 104, 105, 120, 134 e 145 meses em média. O povoamento foi desbastado em duas ocasiões, sendo o primeiro sistemático e aos 81 meses, com intensidade de 36% de área basal, e o segundo seletivo, removendo as piores árvores, aos 104 meses, em média, com redução de 30% de área basal. Os ajustes foram avaliados pelo teste de aderência Kolmogorov-Smirnorv. As funções Log-Logística (3P), Burr (3P), hiperbólica (3P), Burr (4P), Weibull (3P), Hyperbólica (2P), Fatigue Life (3P) e Nakagami, apresentaram valores para o teste k-s mais satisfatórios que a função comumente usada (Weibull).

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of fatigue life, Frechet, Gamma, Generalized Gamma, Generalized Logistic, Log-logistic, Nakagami, Beta, Burr, Dagum, Weibull and Hyperbolic distributions in describing diameter distribution in teak stands subjected to thinning at different ages. Data used in this study originated from 238 rectangular permanent plots 490 m² in size, installed in stands of Tectona grandis L. f. in Mato Grosso state, Brazil. The plots were measured at ages 34, 43, 55, 68, 81, 82, 92, 104, 105, 120, 134 and 145 months on average. Thinning was done in two occasions: the first was systematic at age 81months, with a basal area intensity of 36%, while the second was selective at age 104 months on average and removed poorer trees, reducing basal area by 30%. Fittings were assessed by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov goodness-of-fit test. The Log-logistic (3P), Burr (3P), Hyperbolic (3P), Burr (4P), Weibull (3P), Hyperbolic (2P), Fatigue Life (3P) and Nakagami functions provided more satisfactory values for the k-s test than the more commonly used Weibull function.

OBJETIVO: O aumento do consumo de frutose é concomitante a maior incidência mundial de obesidade. Este monossacarídeo está relacionado à Síndrome Metabólica, sendo vinculado à hipertrigliceridemia, hipertensão arterial, resistência à insulina e diabetes mellitus. É metabolizada principalmente no fígado, onde pode ser convertida em ácidos graxos, os quais serão estocados na forma de trigligérides ocasionando a esteatose hepática não alcoólica (NAFLD). Vários modelos de NAFLD utilizam dietas ricas em carboidratos simples. Desta forma, este trabalho teve como objetivos descrever as principais alterações metabólicas causadas pelo consumo excessivo de frutose em humanos e em animais e apresentar as alterações hepáticas decorrentes da alta ingestão de frutose em diferentes períodos de consumo e desenhos experimentais em ratos Wistar. MÉTODOS: Dois grupos de ratos Wistar foram mantidos em jejum durante 48 horas e realimentados por 24 ou 48 horas com dieta contendo 63% de frutose. Outro grupo de ratos Wistar foi alimentado com 63% de frutose durante 90 dias. RESULTADOS: A realimentação por 24 horas provocou acúmulo de grande quantidade de gordura. A quantidade de gordura hepática nos animais realimentados por 48 horas diminuiu, mantendo-se principalmente nas zona 2 (medio-zonal). Em fígados de ratos Wistar alimentados com 63% de frutose até 90 dias foi possível observar que há aumento de hepatócitos com acúmulo de gordura consequente ao aumento do tempo, no entanto a esteatose hepática é leve (20%). CONCLUSÕES: A frutose é altamente lipogênica, no entanto a indução de NAFLD em modelos crônicos necessita de longos períodos de tratamento. A oferta aguda, por 24 ou 48 horas, a ratos mantidos em jejum é capaz de ocasionar grandes mudanças hepáticas, com presença de esteatose macrovesicular em todas as zonas lobulares

PURPOSE: The increase in fructose consumption is paralleled by a higher incidence of obesity worldwide. This monosaccharide is linked to metabolic syndrome, being associated with hypertriglyceridemia, hypertension, insulin resistance and diabetes mellitus. It is metabolized principally in the liver, where it can be converted into fatty acids, which are stored in the form of triglycerides leading to NAFLD. Several models of NAFLD use diets high in simple carbohydrates. Thus, this study aimed to describe the major metabolic changes caused by excessive consumption of fructose in humans and animals and to present liver abnormalities resulting from high intakes of fructose in different periods of consumption and experimental designs in Wistar rats. METHODS: Two groups of rats were fasted for 48 hours and reefed for 24 or 48 hours with a diet containing 63% fructose. Another group of rats was fed an diet with 63% fructose for 90 days. RESULTS: Refeeding for 24 hours caused accumulation of large amounts of fat, compromising 100% of the hepatocytes. The amount of liver fat in animals refed for 48 hours decreased, remaining mostly in zone 2 (medium-zonal). In liver plates of Wistar rats fed 63% fructose for 45, 60 and 90 days it's possible to see that there is an increase in hepatocytes with fat accumulation according to the increased time; hepatic steatosis, however, is mild, compromising about 20% of the hepatocytes. CONCLUSIONS: Fructose is highly lipogenic, however the induction of chronic models in NAFLD requires long periods of treatment. The acute supply for 24 or 48 hours, fasted rats can cause big changes, liver steatosis with macrovesicular in all lobular zones.

Resumo A avaliação cognitiva na esquizofrenia tem utilizado tradicionalmente baterias longas e complexas ou que variam significativamente em seu conteúdo. A "Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia" (BACS) foi desenvolvida para cobrir os principais déficits cognitivos na esquizofrenia, para ser de fácil e breve aplicação, assim como portátil, sensível e confiável. Objetivos: Investigar a aplicabilidade e a sensibilidade da versão brasileira da BACS (Brazilian-BACS). Métodos: O desempenho de 20 pacientes estáveis com esquizofrenia na Brazilian-BACS foi comparado ao de 20 controles saudáveis pareados. Resultados: A aplicação da Brazilian-BACS exigiu 43.4±8.4 minutos nos pacientes e 40.5±5.7 minutos nos controles (p=0.17). Todos os testes foram significativamente diferentes entre pacientes e controles (P<0.01). A correlação de Pearson e o alfa de Cronbach evidenciaram alto grau de consistência interna no desempenho dos pacientes. O déficit cognitivo nos pacientes foi cerca de 1,5 desvio-padrão menor do que nos controles. Esses resultados são consistentes com os relatados na validação da versão original e em meta-análises de estudos similares. Conclusões: A Brazilian-BACS mostrou boas aplicabilidade e sensibilidade na investigação dos principais domínios cognitivos comprometidos na esquizofrenia. Portanto, a Brazilian-BACS mostra-se um instrumento promissor no estudo da cognição de pacientes com esquizofrenia no Brasil.

Abstract Cognitive assessment in schizophrenia has traditionally used batteries that are long and complex or differ widely in their content. The Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia (BACS) has been developed to cover the main cognitive deficits of schizophrenia as well as to be easily and briefly administered, portable, sensitive and reliable. Objectives: To investigate the applicability and sensitivity of the Brazilian Version of the BACS (Brazilian-BACS). Methods: Performance of 20 stable patients with schizophrenia on the Brazilian-BACS was compared to 20 matched healthy controls. Results: Applying the Brazilian-BACS required 43.4±8.4 minutes for patients and 40.5±5.7 minutes for controls (p=0.17). All tests demonstrated significant differences between controls and patients (P<0.01). Pearson's correlation analysis and Cronbach's a evidenced a high internal consistency for patient performance. The cognitive deficit in the patients was approximately 1.5 standard deviations below controls. These results were consistent with those reported in the validation of the original version and in meta-analyses of similar studies. Conclusions: The Brazilian-BACS displayed good applicability and sensitivity in assessing the major cognitive constructs that are impaired in schizophrenia. Thus, the Brazilian-BACS seems to be a promising tool for assessing cognition in patients with schizophrenia in Brazil.

A magnetic actuator as excitation source in rotative systems is proposed, in order to accomplish modal analysis without contact between the actuator and the rotor. Although the use of electromagnets for applying forces to rotating machinery have been carried out with high performance level (for example, magnetic bearings), the development of a conveniently easy and cheap device for laboratory application presents interesting contribution to experimental methods used in test rigs based on similarity design to rotating machinery. The initial concept of the magnetic actuator proposed here is simple, but enables either the external excitation without contact or the vibration control when associated with a controller system. However, the calibrations of performance characteristics to attend the dynamic demand of the system in not so trivial. Following this focus, the paper brings practical experience and discussion about the development, calibration and performance analysis of a magnetic actuator used for rotating machinery tests. The influence of the electrical current in the actuator coils, the air-gap between actuator and rotative system, the type of surface of the actuator poles (flat or curved) as well as excitation frequency was experimentally verified and compared with theoretical concepts. Force estimation was carried out and compared with the measured force. The estimation was based on the magnetic flux density, measured by hall sensors, or input current and initial air-gap.

A formação do hematoma intraneural com comprometimento de nervos periféricos pode ocorrer após trauma ou coagulopatias. O tratamento expectante ou abordagem cirúrgica descompressiva ainda não estão definidos. Foram estudados 40 ratos da raça Wistar divididos em 4 grupos. No grupo A realizou-se injeção intraneural de 0,2 ml de sangue autógeno no nervo ciático direito. No grupo B, após produção do hematoma, fez-se descompressão imediata com epineurotomia longitudinal. No grupo D realizamos liberação imediata do hematoma com neurólise interfascicular. No grupo C (CONTROLE) apenas realizou-se a exposição do nervo ciático sem formação de hematoma. A avaliação da função nervosa foi feita com o Índice de Função Ciática de Bain-Mackinnon-Hunter (IFC). O grupo A apresentou IFC inicial de -28,43, com recuperação funcional no 5º dia. A drenagem imediata desse hematoma através de uma epineurotomia longitudinal (B) determinou retorno da função ciática normal desde o 1º dia (IFC= -14,42). Tratando o hematoma através da neurólise interfascicular observamos um IFC inicial de -23,69 e retorno da função ciática normal no 3º dia. Os parâmetros histomorfométricos apontaram melhora dos parâmetros de isquemia após os 2 tipos de intervenção cirúrgica aplicadas neste estudo. Não houve diferença entre os tipos de intervenções aplicadas.

Emergence of intraneural hematoma with involvement of peripheral nerves can occur after trauma or coagulation disorders. The decision for expectant management or decompressive surgical techniques is still controversial. Forty male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups. In group A, an intraneural injection of autologous blood was provided at the right sciatic nerve. In group B, after the hematoma creation, a longitudinal epineurotomy was performed. In the group C (sham-operated), the sciatic nerve was exposed without hematoma. In group D. immediately after the hematoma creation, an interfascicular neurolysis was performed. Nerve function recovery was assessed using the Bain-Mackinnon-Hunter Sciatic Function Index (SFI). At the end of the study, the animals were sacrificed and a specimen of the sciatic nerve at compression midpoint was removed for morphometric analysis. Group A displayed an initial SFI of -28.43, with full functional recovery on the fifth day. Immediate drainage of the hematoma by longitudinal epineurotomy (group B) promoted recovery of normal sciatic function on the first day (SFI -14.42). Addressing the hematoma via interfascicular neurolysis resulted in an initial SFI of -23.69 and recovery of normal sciatic function on the third day. The morphometric variables indicated an improvement of ischemic parameters following both types of surgical intervention.

São apresentados quatro casos de leishmaniose em pacientes com SIDA, sendo dois de leishmaniose visceral e dois com forma cutâneo-mucosa. Lesões cutâneas e de mucosa oral, disseminadas, estavam presentes nos pacientes com a forma tegumentar da doença. Febre prolongada, hepatoesplenomegalia e pancitopenia foram as manifestações principais da forma visceral. A contagem de linfócitos T CD4+ era baixa em todos os casos. A pesquisa de leishmanias foi positiva no aspirado de medula óssea e na biópsia de lesões cutâneas e mucosas. Os pacientes responderam ao tratamento com antimoniais pentavalentes e com a anfotericina B. Poucos casos de coinfecção leishmaniose e HIV têm sido descritos em nosso meio. Apesar da ampla expansão de ambas, até agora suas áreas de distribuição geográfica teve pouca superposição. Os autores recomendam a inclusão desta parasitose no diagnostico diferencial das doenças oportunistas que acometem indivíduos com SIDA.

Few cases of concurrent leishmaniasis and HIV infection have been reported in Brazil, despite both infections being in expansion. Two cases of visceral leishmaniasis and two cases of mucocutaneous leishmaniasis are discussed. Disseminated skin and oral lesions were found in the patients with the cutaneous form of the disease. Prolonged fever, hepatosplenomegaly and pancytopenia were the main manifestations of the visceral form. The CD4 T lymphocyte count was low in all cases. Direct examination of bone marrow aspirate for leishmania and biopsy of cutaneous lesions are the techniques of choice to confirm diagnosis. Pentavalent antimonials and amphotericin B are preferred drugs for the treatment of leishmaniasis, including patients with AIDS. The authors recommend the inclusion of this parasitosis in the differential diagnosis of opportunistic diseases in patients with AIDS.
