Abstract Introduction: We investigated the clinical course and outcomes of patients submitted to cardiovascular surgery in Brazil and who had developed symptoms/signs of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the perioperative period. Methods: A retrospective multicenter study including 104 patients who were allocated in three groups according to time of positive real time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for the SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2): group 1, patients who underwent cardiac surgery > 10 days after positive RT-PCR; group 2, patients with a positive RT-PCR within 10 days before or after surgery; group 3, patients who presented positive RT-PCR > 10 days after surgery. The primary outcome was mortality and secondary outcomes were postoperative complications, intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay, and postoperative days of hospitalization. Results: The three groups were similar with respect to age, the European System of Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation score, and comorbidities, except hypertension. Postoperative complications and death were significantly higher in groups 2 and 3 than in group 1, and no significant difference between groups 2 and 3 was seen. Group 2 showed a high prevalence of surgery performed as an urgent procedure. Although no significant differences were observed in ICU length of stay, total postoperative hospitalization time was significantly higher in group 3 than in groups 1 and 2. Conclusion: COVID-19 affecting the postoperative period of patients who underwent cardiovascular surgery is associated with a higher rate of morbidity and mortality. Delaying procedures in RT-PCR-positive patients may help reduce risks of perioperative complications and death.

Abstract Introduction The guidelines on allergic rhinitis aim to update knowledge about the disease and care for affected patients. The initiative called "Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma", initially published in 2001 and updated in 2008 and 2010, has been very successful in disseminating information and evidence, as well as providing a classification of severity and proposing a systemized treatment protocol. In order to include the participation of other medical professionals in the treatment of allergic rhinitis, it is important to develop algorithms that accurately indicate what should and can be done regionally. Objective To update the III Brazilian Consensus on Rhinitis - 2012, with the creation of an algorithm for allergic rhinitis management. Methods We invited 24 experts nominated by the Brazilian Association of Allergy and Immunology, Brazilian Association of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery and Brazilian Society of Pediatrics to update the 2012 document. Results The update of the last Brazilian Consensus on Rhinitis incorporated and adapted the relevant information published in all "Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma" Initiative documents to the Brazilian scenario, bringing new concepts such as local allergic rhinitis, new drugs and treatment evaluation methods. Conclusion A flowchart for allergic rhinitis treatment has been proposed.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Chrysopogon zizanioides (L.) Roberty, Poaceae, is a plant widely used in northeast Brazil in folk medicine for the treatment of various pathological conditions, including inflammatory pain. The present study evaluated the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects of C. zizanioides essential oil (EO) in rodents. EO was further characterized by GC/MS. The major components of EO were identified as khusimol (19.57%), E-isovalencenol (13.24%), α-vetivone (5.25%), β-vetivone (4.87%) and hydroxy-valencene (4.64%). Following intraperitoneal injection (i.p.), EO at 50 and 100 mg/kg significantly reduced the number of writhes (51.9 and 64.9%, respectively) and the number of paw licks during phase 2 (56.7 and 86.2%, respectively) of a formalin model when compared to control group animals. However, EO-treated mice were ineffective at all doses in hot-plate and rota-rod tests. The EO inhibited the carrageenan-induced leukocyte migration to the peritoneal cavity in a dose-dependent manner (34.7, 35.4, and 62.5% at doses of 25, 50 and 100 mg/kg, respectively). In the paw edema test, the EO (100 mg/kg) inhibited all three phases of the edema equally well, suggesting that the EO has a non-selective inhibitory effect on the release or actions of these mediators. Our results suggest possible antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects of the EO.

The objective of this study was to measure the technical efficiency of 228 plots of coffee from the regions of the Brazilian Savannas (Cerrado) and South of Minas Gerais and to identify the determining factors of that efficiency, considering irrigated and non-irrigated crops. The analyses were carried out using both Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and an econometric Tobit model. The results show that most of the coffee crops present technical inefficiency and among the most inefficient are the non-irrigated crops.

Simultaneous observations of the atmospheric neutral winds in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) by meteor radar have been carried out at São João do Cariri (7.4ºS, 36.5ºW) and Cachoeira Paulista (22.7ºS, 45.0ºW). From the wind variability we investigate the atmospheric planetary-scale quasi-two-day waves, which were present at both the sites during the winter of 2004 and summer of 2004/2005. The amplitude of the meridional component was larger than that of the zonal component, reaching a maximum value of ~ 60 m/s at the equatorial site and ~ 25 m/s at the low latitude site during the winter. During the January-February period the 2-day wave was very similar at the two sites, with a maximum amplitude of ~ 50 m/s. The phase propagation with height shows a descending mode and upward energy propagation. The vertical wavelength estimated for Cachoeira Paulista (40-67 km) was longer than for São João do Cariri (30-35 km), for all of the observed events. Cross-spectral analysis showed a significant coherence between the quasi-two-day oscillations observed at the two sites. From the phase difference between the two sites we concluded that São João do Cariri leads Cachoeira Paulista. These results denote that amplitude peak at 36.5ºW and subsequently at 45ºW, compatible with a westward propagating wave.

The terrestrial atmosphere is a dynamical system in which periodic oscillations are present and play a significant role in the dynamics of the upper mesosphere and low thermosphere (MLT). It is already well known that atmospheric tides play an important role in the dynamics of the MLT region, and the purpose of this study is to extend our knowledge of diurnal and semidiurnal oscillations in the equatorial MLT, taking advantage of the measurements of meteor winds over São João do Cariri, Brazil (7ºS, 36ºW), obtained from August 2004 to August 2005. In a preliminary analysis, we have observed that both zonal and meridional wind components exhibited variability with respect to both time and height. The prevailing zonal wind shows a structure characterized by a semiannual oscillation (SAO) and are westward most of the time. The prevailing meridional wind is weaker than the zonal and exhibit an annual cycle. Diurnal and semidiurnal meridional wind oscillations also exhibit time and height variability. In general, the diurnal and semidiurnal amplitudes for the meridional wind component were larger than that for the zonal component. From the phase structures, it was found that the vertical wavelength of the diurnal variations exhibited values from 20 to 30 km for the meridional wind component, whereas for the semidiurnal oscillation they were between 50 and 70 km during equinoxes when the meridional amplitudes were stronger.
