RESUMO O estudo avaliou os efeitos da Intervenção Comportamental Intensiva, realizada por meio da capacitação de cuidadores, no desenvolvimento de crianças com autismo. A pesquisa foi realizada a partir dos dados de crianças atendidas por um centro brasileiro especializado. Os participantes do Grupo 1 eram 22 crianças que finalizaram o primeiro ano de intervenção intensiva. Onze crianças que não fizeram a intervenção intensiva compuseram o Grupo 2, para fins de análise de dados. Os resultados indicaram ganhos significativos em todas as áreas do desenvolvimento das crianças com autismo que passaram pelo primeiro ano de Intervenção Comportamental Intensiva, enquanto as crianças do grupo controle apresentaram ganhos menos expressivos. Crianças mais novas, que falavam e que apresentavam sintomas mais brandos de autismo obtiveram melhores resultados.

ABSTRACT The study evaluated the effects of Intensive Behavioral Intervention, conducted through training of caregivers, on the development of children with autism. The analysis was based on data of children treated by a specialized Brazilian center. Participants in Group 1 were 22 children who completed the first year of intensive intervention. Eleven children, who did not receive intensive intervention, were assigned to Group 2, for data analysis purposes. The results indicated significant gains in all areas of the development of children with autism who have gone through the first year of Intensive Behavioral Intervention, while children in the control group showed less impressive gains. Younger children, who spoke and who had milder symptoms of autism, obtained better results.

RESUMO: o estudo avaliou os efeitos do primeiro ano de Intervenção Comportamental Intensiva no desenvolvimento de 9 crianças com autismo, com idades entre 1 ano e 3 meses e 2 anos e 11 meses, atendidas por um centro brasileiro especializado. A intervenção, conduzida por aproximadamente 15 horas semanais, foi realizada na residência dos participantes por meio da capacitação dos cuidadores. As crianças foram avaliadas pelo Psychoeducational Profile-Revised - PEP-R e pelo Inventário Portage Operacionalizado- IPO, no início e ao término da intervenção. Os dados foram analisados individualmente e os resultados indicaram ganhos no desenvolvimento de todas as crianças, embora em graus variados.

ABSTRACT: The study evaluated the effects of the first year of Intensive Behavioral Intervention on the development of 9 children with autism, aged between 1 year and 3 months and 2 years and 11 months, served by a specialized Brazilian center. The intervention, conducted for approximately 15 hours per week, was performed at the participants' homes through the training of caregivers. The children were evaluated through the Psychoeducational Profile-Revised and the Inventário Portage Operacionalizado, at the beginning and at the end of the intervention. Data were analyzed individually and the results indicated gains in the development of all children, although in varying degrees.

RESUMO Este estudo consiste em uma revisão da literatura sobre o processamento semântico em crianças de zero a seis anos de idade, analisando dados do N400. Foram encontrados 24 estudos que atenderam aos critérios de elegibilidade. A maior parte dos estudos teve por objetivo investigar e caracterizar o padrão eletrofisiológico de crianças mais novas em relação ao padrão encontrado em crianças mais velhas e adultos. Foi encontrada grande variabilidade de tarefas experimentais empregadas, mostrando diversas alternativas de investigação nesta perspectiva. De forma geral, a análise conjunta dos resultados indicou que, apesar dos diferentes objetivos, tipos de provas experimentais e diferentes graus de habilidade de linguagem (i.e., desenvolvimento típico ou diferentes condições), a idade foi um fator relevante na definição da presença ou não e lateralização do efeito N400. Quando ocorreu, o efeito N400 mostrou que a latência e a amplitude da onda declinam com a idade. No entanto, a variabilidade de procedimentos pode afetar o grau de controle e a confiabilidade dos dados. Para estudos futuros, o desenvolvimento de um protocolo padrão para a investigação do processamento semântico, por meio de dados do efeito N400, em diferentes populações é um passo importante e uma forte recomendação para a área.

ABSTRACT This study consists of a literature review about the semantic processing in children 0 to 6 years of age and an N400 data analysis. Twenty-four studies that met the eligibility criteria were found. Most studies aimed to investigate and characterize the electrophysiological patterns of younger children as compared to those found in older children and adults. A large variability of employed experimental tasks was found, showing that there are various investigation alternatives in this perspective. In general, the joint analysis of the results pointed out that despite the different objectives, types of experimental tasks and degrees of language skills (i.e., typical development or different conditions), age was a relevant factor in establishing the presence or not of the N400 effect and its lateralization. When present, the N400 effect showed that the latency and amplitude of the wave decline according to age. However, the variability of procedures can affect the degree of control and the data reliability. For further studies, the development of a standard protocol to investigate the semantic processing by means of the N400 effect data in different populations is an important step and a strong recommendation for the area.

Abstract This study aimed to investigate the number of exclusion trials necessary for teaching auditory-visual relationships to individuals with autism and Down syndrome. Study participants were seven individuals with autism and a history of early behavioral intervention (EI), four adults with autism without a history of early behavioral intervention (NI), and three adults with Down syndrome. A set of procedures was used for teaching the auditory-visual matching to sample, and naming responses of the new stimuli were tested. For the individuals with autism and EI and for the individuals with Down syndrome, the required number of repetitions was stable and concentrated in the minimum programmed by the procedure (two repetitions). However, the procedure was not effective for teaching new conditional relationships for the adults with autism and NI. The results indicate that the procedure can constitute an important teaching technology; however, its efficacy appears to vary depending on the educational profile of the participant.

RESUMO: crianças com autismo podem apresentar dificuldades em aprender habilidades de leitura. O estudo, com o objetivo de avaliar o ensino de leitura oral e de leitura com compreensão, contou com a participação de três meninos com autismo, não alfabetizados, com idades entre cinco anos e nove meses e nove anos e nove meses, falantes e estudantes de escolas comuns. O procedimento, dividido em seis conjuntos de ensino, consistiu no ensino direto de nomeação de sílabas simples e no ensino de nomeação de figuras, com o intuito de estabelecer leitura combinatória com compreensão, ou seja, a habilidade de ler oralmente e de compreender palavras composta por sílabas simples, a partir da combinação das sílabas ensinadas e da formação de classes de estímulos equivalentes. Os participantes foram avaliados em relação à nomeação de letras, sílabas, palavras e compreensão de leitura (relação entre figuras e palavras impressas) antes e após cada conjunto de ensino. Os dados foram analisados individualmente, comparando-se o desempenho de cada participante antes e após o ensino. Os resultados indicaram que o procedimento utilizado favoreceu a aprendizagem e a manutenção da leitura combinatória com compreensão, com poucas sessões de ensino e com baixo número de erros durante o processo.

ABSTRACT: Children with autism may have difficulty in learning reading skills. The study, with the purpose to evaluate the teaching of oral reading and reading comprehension, was conducted with three boys with autism, illiterate, aged five years and nine months and nine years and nine months, speakers and students from regular schools. The procedure was divided into six teaching sets and consisted of the direct teaching of naming simple syllables and the teaching of naming pictures, with the purpose of establishing combinatorial reading and comprehension reading; in other words, the purpose was to teach the ability to read orally and to understand words composed of simple syllables, from the combination of taught syllables and the formation of stimulus equivalence classes. Participants were evaluated for naming letters, syllables, words and reading comprehension (relationship between pictures and printed words) before and after each set of teaching. Data were analyzed individually by comparing the performance of each participant before and after the instruction. The results indicated that the procedure favored the learning and maintenance of combinatorial reading with understanding, with few teaching sessions and low number of errors during the process.

La tipología de los errores presentados por los niños en la adquisición de la lectura y la escritura ha sido ampliamente examinada. El análisis de errores permite inferir fuentes de control del comportamiento durante el aprendizaje, siendo así una herramienta importante para perfeccionar los programas de enseñanza. Sin embargo, pocos estudios han explorado los tipos de errores cometidos por adultos iletrados. Este es un estudio descriptivo que tuvo como objetivo identificar y analizar los errores cometidos por adultos que están aprendiendo a leer y escribir, a partir de un programa de enseñanza computarizado, con el fin de verificar la adecuación del programa a la necesidad de desarrollar procedimientos específicos para esta población. Quince adultos se sometieron individualmente al programa, el cual se compone de una secuencia de pasos de enseñanza y evaluación (pre y postpruebas y exámenes intermedios). Los errores fueron clasificados y analizados con referencia a las categorías descritas en la literatura y algunas nuevas creadas específicamente para este trabajo. Los datos muestran alta concentración de errores en algunas categorías, especialmente para el primer módulo de enseñanza, con indicación parcial de especificidad de los tipos de errores para la población objeto de estudio. Los participantes también presentaron dificultades en la tarea de dictado por construcción, lo cual indica la necesidad de perfeccionamiento del programa cuando es utilizado en la alfabetización de adultos.

The typology of errors presented by children in the acquisition of reading and writing has been widely explored. Error analyses allow inferring sources of behavior control throughout the learning process and are an important tool for improving programs that teach reading and writing. Nevertheless, few studies have explored the types of errors made by illiterate adults. This is a descriptive study aiming to identify and analyze the errors made by adults participating in the process of learning to read and write using a computerized teaching program. The purpose was to evaluate the adequacy of the program and to point out whether there is a need to develop specific procedures for this population. Fifteen adults were individually submitted to the program, which comprises a sequence of teaching steps and assessments (pre and post-tests and intermediate tests). Errors made by the students were categorized and analyzed according to categories described in the literature as well as new ones created specifically for this study. The data show a high concentration of errors in some categories, particularly for the first teaching module, with partial indication of error type specificity for the population in focus. This study also shows the participants' difficulties in writing (construction spelling task), requiring improvement of the computerized program when applied to adult literacy.

A tipologia de erros apresentados por crianças na aquisição de leitura e escrita tem sido amplamente explorada. A análise de erros permite inferir fontes de controle do comportamento ao longo da aprendizagem, sendo por isso um importante instrumento para o aperfeiçoamento de programas de ensino. No entanto, poucos estudos têm explorado a tipologia de erros apresentados por adultos iletrados. Este é um estudo descritivo que teve como objetivo identificar/analisar os erros cometidos por participantes adultos durante o processo de aprendizagem da leitura e escrita, submetidos a um programa informatizado de ensino, visando verificar a adequação do programa ou a necessidade de procedimentos específicos para esta população. Quinze adultos passaram individualmente pelo programa, constituído por uma sequência de passos de ensino e avaliação (pré e póstestes e testes intermediários). Os erros foram categorizados e analisados com base nas categorias descritas na literatura e categorias novas, criadas especificamente para este trabalho. Os dados mostraram grande concentração de erros em algumas categorias, principalmente para o primeiro módulo de ensino, com indicação parcial de especificidade de tipologia de erros para a população em foco. Os participantes também mostraram dificuldade na escrita (ditado por construção), indicando a necessidade de aperfeiçoamento do programa quando utilizado na alfabetização de adultos.

Abstract The present study evaluated whether during a matching-to-sample procedure (MTS), the time spent observing stimuli is related to the establishment of selection or rejection controlling relationships in human participants. It also evaluated whether different response topographies (i.e., participants using the keyboard or mouse) would influence the duration of eye fixations. Ten college students participated. The procedure established conditional relationships among six sets of abstract stimuli. Five participants selected the comparison stimuli using a computer mouse and five used a keyboard. An eye-scan device recorded eye movements throughout the training procedure. After participants completed training, probes verified whether the conditional relationships learned were controlled by selection (e.g., if A1, select B1), by rejection (e.g., if A1, reject B2), or both. All participants displayed a similar pattern of stimuli observation. Time spent observing the sample stimulus (e.g., A1) was longer than observing the comparison stimuli (e.g., B1 and B2). Time spent observing S+ (positive stimuli; e.g., B1) was longer than observing S- (negative stimuli; e.g., B2). Duration of eye fixation was not related to selection or rejection controlling relationships, but different response topographies appeared to modulate the amount of time spent observing stimuli.

Este estudo investigou os efeitos da formação de relações de equivalência entre palavras faladas, palavras impressas e figuras sobre a correspondência na fala de crianças com implante coclear em tarefas de nomeação de figuras e de leitura oral. Antes do estudo as crianças pronunciavam melhor as palavras quando liam do que quando nomeavam as figuras. Foram ensinados dois conjuntos de três relações entre palavras ditadas e as figuras correspondentes, entre as mesmas palavras ditadas e palavras impressas e entre sílabas ditadas e impressas. Sondas periódicas de nomeação das seis figuras e de leitura das palavras impressas, planejadas de acordo com um delineamento de linha de base múltipla entre conjuntos, eram realizadas antes e depois do ensino de cada tipo de relação condicional e do teste de formação de classes de equivalência de cada conjunto. As vocalizações na nomeação de figuras melhoraram progressivamente para cinco dos seis participantes ao longo do ensino do Conjunto 1 e para todos os participantes depois do ensino do Conjunto 2. Na leitura, as vocalizações também ficaram mais precisas. Os resultados estendem descobertas prévias sobre o potencial de procedimentos baseados no paradigma de equivalência de estímulos para a reabilitação da fala e da compreensão auditiva de indivíduos com implante coclear.

The present study investigated the effects of strengthening equivalence relations between spoken words, printed words, and pictures to improve the correspondence between vocalizations in picture naming and in reading tasks in children with cochlear implant. Before the study, the children pronounced words better while reading than while naming pictures. The procedure taught two sets of three relations between dictated words and pictures, between the same dictated words and printed words, and between dictated and printed syllables. Periodic probes evaluated the experimental effects according to a multiple baseline design between stimulus sets. Picture naming and reading of all six words were probed before and after teaching each type of relationship and testing for class formation for each stimulus set. Picture naming progressively improved for five of six participants across teaching and probes with Stimulus Set 1, and for all participants across Stimulus Set 2. Reading scores, initially high, also reached perfect or near perfect accuracy. The results extend previous findings on the potential of procedures based on the stimulus equivalence paradigm for improving speech and listening comprehension of children with cochlear implant.

Ler e escrever são comportamentos que proporcionam a inserção dos indivíduos em grande parte dos ambientes sociais. Apesar de sua importância, índices mostram que, no Brasil, 8,6% das pessoas com idades entre 15 e 24 anos são analfabetas. O presente artigo, dividido em dois estudos, teve como objetivo avaliar os efeitos de um currículo de ensino de leitura de palavras simples (Estudo 1) e de palavras complexas (Estudo 2) da língua portuguesa para adultos analfabetos. Cada estudo teve quatro participantes. Em ambos os estudos a leitura foi ensinada primordialmente pelo treino de relações entre palavras ditadas e palavras impressas. De forma geral, houve aumento na porcentagem de acertos em leitura e em escrita manuscrita quando comparados os desempenhos do pré-teste e dos demais testes, sendo os resultados mais consistentes nas tarefas de leitura. Estudos futuros devem continuar as investigações acerca de procedimentos com estes objetivos para esta população.

Reading and writing are behaviors that provide an individual with the opportunity for inclusion in many social environments. Despite the importance of these behaviors, statistical indices show that, in Brazil, 8.6% of the people aged 15-24 are illiterate. The purpose of this manuscript, which is divided into two studies, was to assess the effects of a Portuguese language reading curriculum for simple (Study 1) and complex words (Study 2) in illiterate adults. Four participants took part in each study. In both studies, reading was taught mainly by training dictated words to printed words relations. Overall, there was an increase in the percentage of correct responses in reading and writing tasks when pre-tests and post-tests were compared; results were more consistent in reading tasks. Future studies should continue to investigate procedures with these goals for this population.

Leer y escribir son comportamientos que proporcionan la inclusión de los individuos en una gran parte de los entornos sociales. A pesar de su importancia, los índices muestran que, en Brasil, el 8,6% de las personas de edades comprendidas entre 15 y 24 años es analfabeto. El objetivo de este trabajo, divido en dos estudios, fue examinar los efectos de un currículo para la enseñanza de la lectura de palabras simples (Estudio 1) y palabras complejas (Estudio 2) de la lengua portuguesa para adultos analfabetos. Cada estudio tuvo cuatro participantes. En ambos estudios, la lectura se enseñó principalmente a través de relaciones entre palabras dictadas y palabras impresas. En general, hubo un aumento en el porcentaje de respuestas correctas en actividades de lectura y escritura al comparar las pruebas de antes y después del estudio; los resultados fueron más consistentes en las actividades de lectura que en las de escritura. Investigaciones futuras pueden aportar a la investigación sobre procedimientos con estos objetivos para esta población.

Reading and writing are functionally independent operants, in which the acquisition of one does not necessarily result in the acquisition of the other. However, when the main components of these behaviors become members of equivalence classes, the abilities become interdependent. Several studies have taught matching printed words to dictated words and matching pictures to dictated words, producing the emergence of equivalence classes and the emergence of reading and spelling, although reading scores were systematically higher than spelling scores. The present study taught spelling skills and sought to determine whether it affects reading skills. Four students learned to spell 30 Portuguese words using a computer-based constructed response matching-to-sample task. Simultaneously with presentation of the sample (i.e., a picture and its corresponding printed word or a dictated word), the computer screen showed a pool of 14 letters. The task was to select the letters in the correct order to spell a word that corresponded to the sample. Differential consequences followed correct and incorrect responses. Spelling and reading improved for all of the participants. Spelling performance was as accurate as reading performance for three of the four participants. These results replicate previous data that showed the effectiveness of the constructed response matching-to-sample task in teaching spelling and promoting the emergence of reading.

Relações entre linguagem oral, consciência fonológica e memória operacional têm sido demonstradas empiricamente, mas consciência fonológica engloba habilidades diferentes. Este artigo teve como objetivo investigar possíveis associações entre habilidades específicas de consciência fonológica e memória operacional fonológica em alunos do primeiro ano escolar. Na fase inicial ( n = 254), o estudo avaliou habilidades de consciência fonológica e memória operacional fonológica e encontrou elevada correlação positiva entre ambas as habilidades, confirmando e estendendo resultados de estudos prévios. A segunda fase ( n = 12) avaliou o vocabulário de indivíduos que obtiveram baixos ou altos escores em memória operacional e consciência fonológica na primeira fase. Os alunos com escores reduzidos de memória operacional e consciência fonológica obtiveram baixos escores em habilidades de linguagem expressiva, indicando que a memória operacional fonológica pode ter efeitos diretos sobre o conhecimento lexical. Esses resultados contribuem para a compreensão das relações investigadas e planejamento de estratégias de ensino.

Relationships between oral language, phonological awareness, and working memory have been empirically demonstrated, however, phonological awareness encompasses different abilities, assessed at different levels. The present study investigated the possible associations between specific phonological awareness abilities and phonological working memory in first-grade students. In the initial phase ( n = 254), the study evaluated the abilities of phonological awareness and phonological working memory and found a high positive correlation between these abilities, thus confirming the findings of previous studies. The second phase ( n = 12) evaluated the vocabulary of individuals who, in the initial phase, showed low or high working memory and phonological awareness scores. Students with low working memory and low phonological awareness capacities had low scores in expressive language abilities, suggesting that phonological working memory may have direct effects on lexical knowledge. These results contribute to the understanding of the relationships investigated in this study and have important implications for planning teaching strategies.

Las relaciones entre lenguaje oral, conciencia fonológica y memoria operacional han sido mostradas empíricamente, pero la conciencia fonológica engloba habilidades diferentes, mensuradas en diferentes niveles. El objetivo de este trabajo, conducido en dos estudios, fue investigar las posibles asociaciones entre las sub-clases de habilidades de conciencia fonológica, memoria fonológica de niños del primero año escolar. En el primero estudio ( n = 254), fueron evaluadas las habilidades de conciencia fonológica y memoria fonológica, que mostraron fuerte correlación positiva. En el segundo estudio ( n = 12), fueron realizados test de vocabulario en niños con bajos y altos escores en memoria operativa y conciencia fonológica. Los niños con puntuaciones bajas en memoria operativa fonológica y conciencia fonológica presentaran habilidades del lenguaje expresivo reducidas, indicando que la memoria operativa fonológica parece interferir directamente en el vocabulario. Los resultados contribuyen hacia la comprensión de las relaciones investigadas y afectan el plan de enseñanza.

O responder por exclusão em tarefas de escolha de acordo com o modelo é um dos padrões mais robustos do comportamento humano. Contudo, uma única resposta por exclusão não assegura a aprendizagem da relação arbitrária entre dois estímulos. O presente estudo teve por objetivo investigar a quantidade de exposição necessária até que oito pré-escolares nomeassem duas figuras novas emparelhadas, por exclusão, a palavras novas. Após o estabelecimento de uma linha de base de emparelhamentos entre figuras e palavras ditadas, duas palavras novas eram introduzidas em sondas de exclusão. Em cada sonda, uma palavra nova era ditada e uma figura nova era apresentada entre outras figuras definidas experimentalmente. Sondas em tarefas de emparelhamento e de nomeação das figuras mostraram aprendizagem das relações condicionais e emergência da nomeação depois de três a 10 tentativas de exclusão. A nomeação correta tendeu a ocorrer de forma mais regular quando a fase de ensino estabeleceu controle de estímulos por seleção.

Responding by exclusion in matching-to-sample tasks is a robust behavioral pattern in humans. A single selection, however, does not ensure learning of the arbitrary relationship between the sample and the selected comparison stimulus. The present study aimed to investigate the amount of exposure required until eight preschoolers were able to name two undefined pictures, matched by exclusion, to two undefined words. After establishing a matching-to-sample baseline between pictures and dictated words, two new words were introduced in exclusion probes. On each probe, a new word was dictated and the matrix of comparison stimuli included a new picture and two experimentally defined pictures. Naming emerged after three to10 exclusion trials. Correct naming tended to occur more reliably when the teaching phase established stimulus control by selection.

El responder por exclusión en tareas de igualación a la muestra es uno de los patrones más robustos del comportamiento humano. No obstante, una única respuesta por exclusión no garantiza el aprendizaje de la relación arbitraria entre dos estímulos. El presente estudio investigó la cantidad de exposiciones necesarias para que ocho estudiantes preescolares nominaran dos figuras nuevas emparejadas, por exclusión, con palabras nuevas. Después del establecimiento de una línea de base de emparejamientos entre figuras y palabras dictadas, dos palabras nuevas eran introducidas en pruebas de exclusión. En cada prueba, una palabra nueva era dictada y una figura nueva presentada entre otras definidas. Pruebas de aprendizaje en tareas de igualación al modelo y de nominación de las figuras mostraron que la nominación emergió después de tres a 10 ensayos de exclusión. Se observó que la nominación correcta ocurrió de forma más fidedigna cuando el control era por selección.

Instruções podem evocar comportamentos novos, sem uma longa história prévia de aprendizagem por exposição a contingências de reforçamento, mas poucos estudos tem investigado a compreensão de instruções. Considerando o paradigma de equivalência de estímulos como um modelo de estudo do significado, esta pesquisa investigou se instruções incluídas em uma classe de estímulos equivalentes passam a ter o mesmo significado que os demais estímulos da classe. As instruções eram frases curtas com verbo no infinitivo. Os estímulos significativos eram ações (filmadas em videoteipe). O procedimento incluiu: (a) ensinar discriminações condicionais entre verbos falados e ações e entre verbos e figuras abstratas; (b) avaliar a formação de classes entre videoteipes e figuras; e (c) verificar o seguimento de instruções orais e das figuras equivalentes. Quatorze de 15 crianças formaram classes. A maioria também seguiu instruções. A formação de classes de equivalência estabeleceu o "significado" de instruções e favoreceu o comportamento de seguir instruções tanto orais e quanto pictóricas. O controle instrucional pelas figuras foi ligeiramente menor que o controle pelas instruções orais; porém, considerando-se que tal controle só poderia ocorrer por derivação das classes de estímulos, os resultados são conclusivos de que a equivalência é uma via para a compreensão de instruções.

Instructions may evoke novel behavior, without a previous history of learning by exposure to contingencies of reinforcement; however a few studies have investigated the comprehension of instructions. Based on the stimulus equivalence paradigm as a model for the study of meaning, this research investigated whether instructions included as members of a class of equivalent stimuli acquire the same meaning as the other stimuli in the class. The experimental instructions were short sentences. The meaningful stimuli were actions (filmed on videotape). The procedure included: (a) teaching conditional discriminations between spoken verbs and actions and between spoken verbs and abstract pictures, (b) assessing the formation of classes between actions and pictures, and (c) verifying instruction following evoked by oral instructions and by the equivalent pictures. Fourteen of 15 children showed class formation. Most children also followed the instructions. The formation of equivalence classes established the "meaning" of instructions and fostered instruction-following behavior for both oral and pictorial instructions. The control by pictorial instructions was slightly lower than the control by oral instructions, but considering that such instructional control could only occur if derived from the stimulus classes, the results are conclusive: equivalence leads to the comprehension of instructions.

This experiment evaluated the effects of superimposing the Estes-Skinner Conditioned Emotional Response (CER) procedure on one of two components of a multiple schedule. The question was whether CER conditioning occurred under contextual control. The procedure had four experimental phases: (1) baseline of operant responding under a two-component multiple schedule (mult VI 30 VI 30), one component correlated with the house light on and the other correlated with the house light off (light/dark components), (2) introduction of tone-shock pairings during the light component only, (3) return to baseline contingencies, and (4) reintroduction of the tone (but not shock) in the light component. Three Wistar rats showed robust suppression of responding in the light component, and the suppression also partially generalized to the dark component. The suppression was stronger during the pre-aversive stimulus than during the intervals immediately before and after its presentation. Responding partially recovered under baseline contingencies, but response rates remained lower in the light component than in the dark component. Thus, under the present experimental conditions, the context in which CER conditioning occurred (i.e., the house light-illuminated chamber) also produced conditioned suppression, and contextual control of suppressed responding generalized to another context, one that shared some but not all elements of the first context (i.e., the same chamber not illuminated by a house light). These results have direct implications for our understanding of emotional conditioning produced in the laboratory and for analysis of related phenomena addressed in the clinic.

Limiares auditivos de crianças surdas pré-linguais usuárias de implante coclear foram avaliados com estimulação elétrica em um dos eletrodos mediais. A avaliação empregou um procedimento operante do tipo go/no go para ensinar uma discriminação simples, evidenciada por uma resposta motora, entre presença e ausência do estímulo auditivo. Estabelecida a linha de base, a manipulação na intensidade do estímulo foi implementada de acordo com o método psicofísico de escada modificado, começando por uma seqüência descendente. Os sete participantes do estudo mostraram perda da precisão no responder sob controle do estímulo quando a intensidade diminuía além de um certo valor e a precisão era recuperada quando a intensidade era novamente aumentada, o que permitiu a identificação de limiares individuais. Os resultados sugerem que o método psicofísico combinado com o procedimento operante pode ser uma alternativa viável para avaliar limiar auditivo de pessoas sem linguagem em situação clínica de regulagem do implante coclear.

Auditory thresholds of prelingually deaf children who received cochlear implants were evaluated for the electrical stimulation to one of the medial electrodes. A go/no go operant procedure was used to teach a simple discrimination, indicated by a motor response, between the presence versus the absence of an auditory stimulus. Simple discrimination was used as a baseline upon which the electrical stimulus's intensity was manipulated in a decreasing sequence followed by an increasing sequence, according to a modified psychophysical staircase method. The accuracy of responding in the presence of the electrical stimulus was reduced for all seven participants when the stimulus intensity decreased bellow a certain value and was recovered when the stimulus intensity was increased to the previous level. The experimental design allowed reliable identification of individual thresholds. The results suggest that the psychophysical paradigm in combination with the operant procedure might be useful for the evaluation of the auditory threshold for purposes of cochlear implant fitting in clinical settings.
