Resumo Objetivo Comparamos a eficácia de dois dispositivos de amostragem, o amostrador Surber e a Rede-D, comumente utilizados na análise da estrutura da fauna de invertebrados em programas de biomonitoramento. Esses programas utilizam a resposta dos invertebrados bentônicos para avaliar as mudanças nos ecossistemas aquáticos porque respondem rapidamente às variações espaciais e temporais. No entanto, a falta de consenso sobre o melhor método de amostragem da fauna pode reduzir a qualidade desses estudos. Métodos Avaliamos ambos os dispositivos em quatro trechos estruturalmente diferentes de riachos, dois em locais com vegetação ripária preservada e dois ocorrendo em locais com várias alterações antrópicas. Repetimos a análise na estação seca de dois anos consecutivos. Resultados Os dois amostradores foram igualmente eficazes na análise da fauna bentônica e sensíveis o suficiente para identificar variações espaciais e temporais na estrutura desta fauna, influenciada pela presença ou ausência de vegetação ripária, pela posição do trecho com essa vegetação (a montante ou jusante do trecho sem vegetação) e pelas características do substrato. Conclusões A estrutura da fauna analisada foi semelhante para os dois amostradores, mas consideramos o uso do Surber mais vantajoso e efetivo por amostrar um menor número de indivíduos, reduzindo o tempo de processamento e identificação no laboratório, e por permitir uma melhor definição da área amostrada.

Abstract Aim We compared the effectiveness of two sampling devices, the Surber sampler and the D-frame net, commonly used in the analysis of invertebrate fauna structure in biomonitoring programs. These programs use the response of benthic invertebrates to assess changes in aquatic ecosystems because they respond quickly to spatial and temporal variations. However, the lack of consensus on the best method of sampling the fauna may reduce the quality of these studies. Methods We evaluated both devices in four structurally different reaches of streams, two in places with preserved riparian vegetation and two occurring in places with many anthropic disturbances. We repeated the analysis at the dry season of two consecutive years. Results The two samplers were equally effective in analyzing the benthic fauna and sensitive enough to identify spatial and temporal variation in the structure of this fauna, influenced by the presence or absence of riparian vegetation, by the position of the reach with this vegetation (upstream or downstream of the reach without vegetation) and the characteristics of the substrate. Conclusions The analyzed fauna structure was similar for the two samplers, but we consider the use of Surber more advantageous and effective because it collects a smaller number of individuals, reducing the time of processing and identifying in the laboratory, and allows a better definition of the area sampled.

Resumo Objetivo Investigamos os efeitos a longo prazo de uma paisagem rural sobre a estrutura e organização trófica de uma assembleia de peixes. Métodos Comparamos dados ambientais e dados da estrutura e organização trófica da assembleia de peixes, amostrados em um riacho localizado em uma área rural, em um intervalo de tempo de 20 anos. Resultados Observamos apenas mudanças pontuais nas variáveis ambientais e na estrutura da ictiofauna, as quais podem não estar relacionadas com o ambiente rural. Na dieta dos peixes, a insetivoria se manteve predominante em todos os períodos amostrais. Entretanto, quando analisamos os grupos de hexápodes consumidos pelas espécies de peixes, encontramos uma substituição de Ephemeroptera e Trichopetra por Diptera ao longo do tempo. Conclusões Embora a estrutura da assembleia de peixes não tenha sido afetada, a análise da dieta insetívora mostrou que o trecho do riacho pode estar em um processo contínuo de perda de qualidade ambiental, uma vez que a simplificação na estrutura da assembleia de macroinvertebrados ao longo do tempo é indicativa de degradação ambiental.

Abstract Aim We investigated the long-term effects of a rural landscape on the structure and trophic organization of a fish assemblage. Methods We compared environmental data and data from fish assemblage structure and trophic organization sampled in a stream located in a rural area, within a time gap of 20 years. Results We observed only punctual changes in the environmental variables and fish structure, which may not be related to the rural landscape. In fish diet, insectivory remained predominant in all sample periods. However, when we analyzed the groups of hexapods consumed by the fish species, we found a substitution of Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera by Diptera over time. Conclusions Although the fish assemblage structure was not affected, the insectivore diet analysis showed that the stream stretch could be in an ongoing process of environmental quality loss, once the simplification in the macroinvertebrates assemblage structure over time is indicative of environmental degradation.

Resumo O estudo da alimentação de peixes é uma importante ferramenta para avaliar diferentes níveis de degradação ambiental, uma vez que a disponibilidade de alimentos no ambiente é um fator-chave para a ocorrência de peixes. A remoção da vegetação ripária geralmente causa uma grande perda de qualidade ambiental, uma vez que essa vegetação tem um importante papel em gerar energia para o ecossistema. Nós investigamos os efeitos da remoção da vegetação ripária sobre a rede trófica das assembleias de peixes. Nosso estudo foi conduzido em dois trechos de um riacho do sudeste brasileiro, um em um fragmento florestal e outro em uma pastagem, durante as estações chuvosa e seca de 2014. Analisamos os itens consumidos por cada espécie de peixe utilizando a frequência de ocorrência e a área de cada item, que foram combinados para o cálculo do índice alimentar, o qual foi utilizado para determinar o valor médio da sobreposição de nicho alimentar da assembleia e o índice de especialização da rede trófica. As redes tróficas dos dois trechos foram dominadas por Hexapoda aquáticos, detritos vegetais e matéria orgânica. Observamos maiores valores de sobreposição de nicho alimentar no trecho florestado e redes tróficas mais complexas no trecho de pastagem. Verificamos poucas variações sazonais nos itens consumidos e índices calculados em ambos os trechos estudados. A presença de capim nas margens do trecho de pastagem e a importação de recursos alimentares da área à montante pode ter oferecido uma maior diversidade de recursos e, consequentemente, a assembleia de peixes apresentou rede trófica mais complexa quando comparada ao trecho florestado.

Abstract The study of the diet of fish is an important tool to assess different levels of environmental degradation, since the availability of food in the environment is a key factor for the fish occurrence. The removal of riparian vegetation usually degrades environmental quality, as this vegetation has an important role in providing energy to the ecosystem. This study investigates the effects of the removal of riparian vegetation on the fish assemblage trophic network. The study was carried out in two stretches of a southeastern Brazilian stream, one in a forest fragment and another in a pasture, during the wet and dry seasons of 2014. We analyzed the items consumed by each fish species using the frequency of occurrence and area of each item, which were combined to calculate the alimentary index, which was used to determine the food niche overlap of the fish and the specialization index of the trophic network. Aquatic Hexapoda, vegetal debris and organic matter dominated the trophic network of the two stretches. We detected higher values of food niche overlap in the forested stretch and more complex trophic networks in the pasture stretch. We found few seasonal variations in the items consumed and calculated indices in both stretches studied. The presence of grass on the banks in the pasture stretch and the importation of food resources from the upstream area may have provided a higher diversity of resources and consequently showed a more complex trophic network when compared to the forested stretch.

Resumo Em ecossistemas lóticos é comum a formação de diferentes mesohabitats intercalados ao longo do rio, como poções, corredeiras e rápidos, frequentemente acompanhados de alterações na estrutura da fauna bentônica associada. No trabalho analisamos a fauna de invertebrados bentônicos em rápidos e corredeiras de um trecho de serra do Rio Capivara (Bacia do Médio Rio Tietê). A análise das características ambientais e a coleta da fauna foram realizadas em três corredeiras e três rápidos, em um mês da estação chuvosa (cinco réplicas de cada). Os mesohabitats se diferenciaram quanto ao maior porcentual de blocos nos rápidos e maiores valores de profundidade, correnteza e porcentual de matacões nas corredeiras. Do total de 57 Unidades Taxonômicas Operacionais (UTO's) amostradas, 75% foram comuns aos dois mesohabitats (Similaridade de Morisita = 0,86). Quando analisado o porcentual de abundância, a similaridade espacial se manteve e dois grupos se sobressaíram em abundância: Hexapoda (>80%, sendo a maioria Ephemeroptera, Diptera e Trichoptera) e Annelida (10%). As análises exploratórias (cluster e NMDS) também apontaram para uma elevada similaridade espacial, porém os resultados da Análise de Similaridade (ANOSIM) indicaram uma diferença significativa entre os mesohabitats (p<0,1%), seja analisando o total de UTO's ou retirando as UTO's raras. Cinco grupos tiveram uma maior contribuição para a média de dissimilaridade entre os mesohabitats: Simulium e Baetodes mais abundantes nas corredeiras, Traveryphes, Hagenulopsis e Macrelmis nos rápidos. Assim, os resultados da ANOSIM salientaram a importância do refinamento na identificação para a interpretação mais precisa acerca da relação entre a fauna e a estrutura do habitat.

Abstract The formation of different mesohabitats, such as pools, riffles and runs, is common along the courses of stream ecosystems, and these are frequently accompanied by changes in the benthic fauna structure. In this paper, we analyzed the fauna of benthic invertebrates in riffles and runs of a stretch of the Capivara River (Middle Tietê River Basin). The analyses of the environmental characteristics and samplings of the fauna were performed in three riffles and three runs (five replicates in each) within a month of the rainy season. The mesohabitats differed with respect to the higher percentage of cobble in the runs and greater depth, current and number of boulders in the riffles. Of the total of 57 Operational Taxonomic Unities (OTU's) sampled, 75% were common to both mesohabitats (Morisita Similarity = 0.86). When the percentage of abundance by mesohabitat was analyzed, spatial similarity remained with Hexapoda (> 80%, mainly represented by Ephemeroptera, Diptera and Trichoptera) and Annelida (10%) standing out in abundance. The exploratory analysis (cluster and NMDS) found high spatial similarity, but the results of the Analysis of Similarity (ANOSIM) indicated a significant difference between the mesohabitats (p <0.1%), both when the total OTU's were analyzed or when removing the rare ones. Five groups contributed more greatly to the average dissimilarity between mesohabitats: Simulium and Baetodes were more abundant in riffles, while Traveryphes, Hagenulopsis and Macrelmis were more abundant in runs. Thus, the results of ANOSIM stressed the importance of refining identification for a more precise interpretation of the relationship between fauna and habitat structure.

Informações sobre o modo de vida das raias de água doce (Potamotrygonidae) sob condições naturais são escassas. Neste trabalho, estudamos o período de atividade e as formas de uso do habitat de duas espécies do gênero Potamotrygon na bacia do alto rio Paraná, no Sudeste do Brasil. Potamotrygon falkneri e P. motoro apresentaram comportamento muito semelhante, com nítida segregação espacial dos indivíduos em função do seu tamanho, da profundidade e do período do dia. Juvenis estiveram associados a praias arenosas e locais com profundidades abaixo de quatro metros ao longo de todo o dia. Raias de grande porte realizaram migrações batimétricas, alternando sua posição entre locais com profundidade superior a oito metros durante o dia e áreas mais rasas à noite. Indivíduos com tamanho intermediário ocuparam ambientes de transição, com maior heterogeneidade ambiental. Ambas as espécies apresentaram atividade, especialmente alimentar, predominantemente noturna. Os padrões comportamentais estudados parecem sofrer variações ontogenéticas e é provável que se alterem ao longo do ano, entre períodos de seca e cheia.

The life history of freshwater stingrays (Potamotrygonidae) under natural conditions has been poorly documented. In this study, we investigated theperiod of activity and the habitat use of two species of the genus Potamotrygon in the upper Paraná River basin, Southeastern Brazil. Potamotrygon falkneri and P. motoro are similar to each other as far as the analyzed behavior is concerned. Individuals of both species segregate according to their size, and in function of the depth and period of the day. Younger individuals inhabit mostly sandy beaches and places that are no deeper than four meters throughout the whole day. Bigger stingrays realize bathymetric migrations, alternating their position between places deeper than eight meters during the day, and shallow areas at night. Individuals of intermediate size inhabit transition environments that have greater habitat diversity. Both species presented mostly nocturnal habits, especially regarding their feeding behavior. The behavioral patterns observed seem to go through ontogenetic variations and probably change throughout the year, between dry and wet seasons.

Registramos um indivíduo da raia de água doce, Potamotrygon falkneri, com a cavidade oral parcialmente obstruída por uma espécie de bagre, Pimelodella gracilis, já em processo de decomposição. A ingestão de bagres possivelmente é dificultada e pode se tornar arriscada devido aos espinhos serrilhados nas nadadeiras dorsal e peitorias desse tipo de presa. Duas possíveis explicações para o fato observado podem ser apresentadas: erro ou inexperiência do exemplar analisado. As duas possibilidades podem estar relacionadas ao fato do exemplar capturado ser um indivíduo juvenil.

We report an individual of the freshwater stingray Potamotrygon falkneri caught with a decomposing catfish, Pimelodella gracilis, stuck in its oral cavity. The ingestion of catfishes by stingrays is possibly rendered difficult or hazardous due to the serrated spines on the dorsal and pectoral fins of this prey type. There are at least two possible explanations for the rotting catfish we found stuck in the mouth of a potamotrygonid ray: mistake or inexperience of the analyzed specimen. Both possibilities may be due to the fact that the ray was a young individual.

Cardumes de mugilídeos são abundantes em ambientes estuarinos e de águas marinhas rasas. No presente trabalho registramos o comportamento de formação de cardume por juvenis de parati, Mugil curema, no estuário do Riacho do Canto da Paciência, em Ubatuba, sudeste do Brasil. Cardumes de peixes pequenos (15 a 35 mm CT) eram compostos por maior número de indivíduos (até uma centena) e observados se alimentando em águas marginais rasas, enquanto peixes maiores (40 a 100 mm CT) foram observados somente em áreas de maior profundidade. Três padrões de movimentação do cardume foram observados: forrageando estacionário, deslocamento lento procurando alimento e deslocamento rápido. As variações observadas na estrutura e comportamento dos cardumes parecem estar relacionadas com um balanço entre o risco de predação e a otimização do forrageamento.

Schools of mullets, Mugilidae, are abundant in estuaries and shallow marine waters. We report on the schooling behavior of juvenile white mullet, Mugil curema, in the estuary of the Canto da Paciência stream, in Ubatuba, southeastern Brazil. Schools of small fish (15 to 35 mm TL) were composed of a larger number of individuals (up to a hundred individuals), and were found feeding mainly in shallow nearshore waters, whereas schools of larger fish (40 to 100 mm TL) were observed only in deeper waters. Three patterns of swimming were observed for the schools: stationary feeding, slow movement while searching for food, and rapid displacement. The variations observed in school structure and behavior seem to be related to the balance between predation risk and increasing food intake.

As raias da família Potamotrygonidae representam um grupo singular da ictiofauna Neotropical. Apesar de serem antigos os relatos sobre o grupo, ainda são muitas as questões que permanecem sem resposta, sobretudo no que diz respeito à biologia das espécies que ocorrem na Bacia do Paraná-Paraguai. No presente trabalho foi analisada a dieta de Potamotrygon falkneri e Potamotrygon motoro, capturadas no Alto Rio Paraná, a jusante da Usina Hidrelétrica Engenheiro Souza Dias (UHE Jupiá). As duas espécies de raias apresentaram dieta diversificada, ingerindo 14 itens, entre moluscos, crustáceos, insetos e peixes, porém com predominância de insetos aquáticos em diversidade e abundância. Somente um indivíduo de cada espécie ingeriu peixe. Potamotrygon motoro consumiu principalmente Ephemeroptera, enquanto P. falkneri, principalmente Mollusca, Hemiptera e Trichoptera. Os dados aparentemente indicam uma dieta mais especializada de P. motoro, com maior consumo de Ephemeroptera (Baetidae), e uma dieta mais generalizada de P. falkneri. A análise dos indivíduos capturados em três micro-hábitats, que diferem quanto ao tipo de substrato e presença de vegetação marginal, sugere diferenças nos tipos de alimentos consumidos.

Stingrays of the Potamotrygonidae family are a singular group of Neotropical ichthyofauna. Although ancient reports exist about the group, there are still many questions that need to be clarified, such as the biology of the species that occur in the Paraná-Paraguay River system. In the present work, the diet of Potamotrygon falkneri and Potamotrygon motoro, captured in the Upper Paraná River, downstream from the Engenheiro Souza Dias Hydroelectric Power Station (UHE Jupiá), was analyzed. Both species showed a diversified diet, consisting of 14 food items, including Mollusca, Crustacea, Insecta and fish, with the predominance in diversity and abundance of aquatic insects. Only one individual of each species ingested fish. Potamotrygon motoro consumed mainly Ephemeroptera, while P. falkneri consumed mainly Mollusca, Hemiptera and Trichoptera. The data apparently indicate a more specialized diet for P. motoro, consuming more Ephemeroptera (Baetidae), and a more generalized diet for P. falkneri. The analysis of individuals captured in three microhabitats that differ in function of the substrate type and presence of marginal vegetation, suggests differences in the food items consumed.

A distribuição geográfica das raias da família Potamotrygonidae é restrita aos principais sistemas fluviais da América do Sul. No Brasil, a ocorrência de potamotrigonídeos é conhecida em toda a Bacia Amazônica, em alguns rios da região Nordeste e na Bacia Paraguai-Paraná. O alto curso do Rio Paraná, separado no passado dos trechos médio e baixo pelas Cachoeiras de Sete-Quedas, hoje está conectado a essas áreas devido ao represamento de grande parte de seu curso. A construção das barragens destruiu obstáculos naturais, possibilitando a dispersão de diversas espécies de organismos aquáticos rumo ao alto curso do Rio Paraná. Reportamos aqui o registro da ocorrência de duas espécies de raias no Alto Rio Paraná, as quais não faziam parte da fauna nativa da região há pouco mais de duas décadas atrás.

The freshwater stingrays of the Potamotrygonidae family are elasmobranchs restricted to the major river systems of South America. In Brazil, the occurrence of potamotrigonids is known in all the Amazonian Basin, some rivers of the Northeastern region and in the Paraguay-Paraná Basin. The upper course of the Paraná River, separated in the past from the medium and low courses by Sete-Quedas Waterfalls, today is connected to these areas due to the dams constructed in great part of its course. The dams had destroyed natural barriers, making possible the dispersion of many species of aquatic organisms to the headwaters of the Paraná River. We report the occurrence record of two species of stingrays in the Upper Paraná River, which were not part of native fauna about two decades ago.

O padrão de distribuição de organismos aquáticos é resultado da interação entre o hábito, as condições físicas, que compreendem o hábitat (substrato, fluxo, turbulência) e a disponibilidade alimentar. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo conhecer a composição e compreender o padrão de distribuição das comunidades animais de um riacho tropical. As coletas foram realizadas em um afluente da Bacia do Paranapanema, localizado no município de Itatinga, São Paulo. Quando analisada a ocorrência em diferentes tipos de substrato de fundo - vegetal, rochoso e arenoso - encontramos uma maior densidade no substrato rochoso e maior riqueza no substrato vegetal. Nos três substratos, os invertebrados da classe Insecta, e principalmente a ordem Diptera, predominaram em abundância e riqueza de espécies. Desta ordem, nos substratos vegetal e rochoso predominaram as famílias Chironomidae e Simuliidae e no sedimento, a família Chironomidae. Dentre os quironomídeos foram encontrados diversos gêneros, com muitos indivíduos, da subfamília Ortocladiinae.

The distribution pattern of aquatic organisms results from the interaction of the habit, the physical conditions of the habitat (substrate, flow, turbulence) and the food availability. The purpose of this study is to know the composition and to understand the pattern of distribution of the animal community of a tropical stream. The collections were accomplished in a tributary of the Basin of Paranapanema, located in the municipal district of Itatinga, São Paulo. When analyzed the occurrence in different types of substrate - vegetal, rocky and sandy - we found a larger density in the rocky substrate and larger diversity in the vegetal substrate. In the three substrata, the invertebrates of the class Insecta, and mainly the order Diptera, prevailed in abundance and diversity of species. Of this order, in the vegetal and rocky substrate prevailed the families Chironomidae and Simuliidae and in the sediment, the family Chironomidae. Between the Chironomidae was found several genera, with many individuals, of the subfamily Ortocladiinae.

Substratos artificial e natural foram comparados quanto ao processo de colonização por macroinvertebrados. No 1º, 3º, 7º, 13º, 21º, 31º e 42º dias de amostragem a riqueza e a abundância dos macroinvertebrados foi analisada. Larvas de Chironomidae foi o grupo mais abundante nos dois substratos durante todo o período amostral (53% em cada substrato), seguido por Oligochaeta (17 no artificial e 18 % no natural), formas imaturas de Ephemeroptera (16 e 11%) e Trichoptera (10 e 11%). O processo de sucessão ecológica foi similar nos dois substratos, sendo Oligochaeta um importante colonizador nos estágios iniciais do processo sucessional. Outra semelhança entre os substratos foi o aparecimento de Ephemeroptera-Leptohyphidae no sétimo dia de amostragem, após o que outros grupos apresentaram flutuações na sua abundância. Em conclusão, o substrato artificial foi apropriado para a colonização por macroinvertebrados, mostrando similaridade na estrutura da comunidade e nos processos de sucessão ecológica quando comparado ao substrato natural. Um período de estabilização na composição da comunidade ocorreu, para os dois substratos, entre e sétimo e 13º dias de amostragem.

The artificial and natural substrates were compared regarding the colonization process by macroinvertebrates. At 1st, 3rd, 7th, 13th, 21st, 31st and 42nd sampling days the macroinvertebrate richness and abundance were analyzed. Chironomidae larva was the most abundant on both substrates during the whole sampling period (53% on each substrate), followed by Oligochaeta (17 in artificial and 18 % in natural), Ephemeroptera (16 and 11%) and Trichoptera juveniles (10 and 11%). The ecological succession process was similar on both substrates, with Oligochaeta as an important colonizer in earlier stages of the successional process. Other similarity between the substrates was the appearance of Ephemeroptera-Leptohyphidae at the 7th sampling day, after what other groups started fluctuations on their abundance. In conclusion, the artificial substrate was appropriated for the macroinvertebrate colonization, showing similarity of the community structure and the process of ecological succession when compared to the natural one. For both substrates a stabilization period of the community composition happened between the 7th and 13th samplings days.
