Abstract Due to urban population growth, there is increasing pressure to utilize open spaces in urban centers, particularly in challenging areas like watercourses. However, traditional approaches such as canalization and drainage techniques have proven ineffective and unsustainable in the face of climate change challenges. This research aims to analyze the landscapes and multifunctionality of river environments in Angers, France, identifying their functions and historical evolution, considering the population contributions and the impact on quality of life. The research employed a geohistorical analysis to examine the social, economic, and environmental dimensions through the construction of a historical timeline depicting changes in the urban space influenced by the municipality’s watercourses (Quantitative analysis). Additionally, key actors’ actions were captured and discussed through interviews and questionnaires (Qualitative analysis). This comprehensive approach facilitated the analysis of the evolutionary process of urban rivers and the identification of their multifunctional use, contributing to urban sustainability. The implementation of green and blue infrastructures (GBIs) played a significant role in this process, and participatory interventions helped garner public support for reintegrating rivers into the urban landscape. The interviews highlighted that the successful implementation of multifunctional infrastructures relies not only on clear legislation but also on political will and the adoption of sustainable economic alternatives.

Resumo Devido ao crescimento populacional urbano, existe uma pressão crescente para utilizar espaços abertos em centros urbanos, especialmente em áreas desafiadoras como cursos d’água. No entanto, abordagens tradicionais, como canalização e técnicas de drenagem, têm se mostrado ineficazes e insustentáveis diante dos desafios das mudanças climáticas. Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo analisar as paisagens e a multifuncionalidade dos ambientes fluviais em Angers, na França, identificando suas funções e evolução histórica, considerando as contribuições da população e o impacto na qualidade de vida. A pesquisa utilizou uma análise geo-histórica para examinar as dimensões sociais, econômicas e ambientais por meio da construção de uma linha do tempo histórica que retrata as mudanças no espaço urbano influenciadas pelos cursos d’água do município (Análise quantitativa). Além disso, as ações dos principais atores foram capturadas e discutidas por meio de entrevistas e questionários (Análise qualitativa). Essa abordagem abrangente facilitou a análise do processo evolutivo dos rios urbanos e a identificação de seu uso multifuncional, contribuindo para a sustentabilidade urbana. A implementação de infraestruturas verdes e azuis (IVAs) desempenhou um papel significativo nesse processo, e intervenções participativas ajudaram a obter o apoio público para reintegrar os rios à paisagem urbana. As entrevistas destacaram que a implementação bem-sucedida de infraestruturas multifuncionais depende não apenas de legislação clara, mas também de vontade política e adoção de alternativas econômicas sustentáveis.

ABSTRACT Different products have been tested to increase the vase life of cut flowers after harvest such as the biodegradable films. These products have been used in fruits since the application on the surface may provide the modification of the atmosphere around it, although, there is no information for flowers. The objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of cassava starch films as a postharvest product for Red Torch Ginger inflorescences. On the first experiment, different starch concentrations in the solution were tested and in the second experiment starch, concentrations with plasticizers and adjuvants were evaluated. The application of the biodegradable film in Red Torch stems acted as a barrier to the gases, as observed by their water absorption rate and the maintenance of fresh weight, maintaining postharvest quality up to Day 6. The visual quality was better in the inflorescences treated with 6% starch and in the films without additives. The use of 6% starch films led to lower contents of hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxidation and higher levels of primary-metabolism macromolecules up to Day 6, delaying senescence and increasing postharvest durability. The addition of glycerol plasticizer to the different film concentrations improved the film resistance characteristics. It is recommended the use of films based on cassava starch at a concentration of 6%. The use of the adjuvant is not essential since it changed the film’s characteristics, leaving it less transparent and more viscous, hindering drying.

RESUMO Diferentes produtos foram testados para aumentar a durabilidade de flores de corte após a colheita, como filmes biodegradáveis. Estes produtos têm sido utilizados em frutas desde que a aplicação na superfície proporciona a modificação da atmosfera ao seu redor. Embora, não haja informações sobre o uso desses produtos para flores. O objetivo foi avaliar a eficácia de filmes de amido de mandioca como produto pós-colheita para inflorescências de Red Torch Ginger. No primeiro experimento foram testadas diferentes concentrações de amido na solução e no segundo experimento foram avaliadas concentrações de amido com plastificantes e adjuvantes. A aplicação do filme biodegradável em hastes de bastão-do-imperador atuou como uma barreira aos gases, como observado pela sua taxa de absorção de água e a manutenção do peso fresco, mantendo a qualidade pós-colheita até o Dia 6. A qualidade visual foi melhor nas inflorescências tratadas com 6% de amido e nos filmes sem aditivos. O uso de filmes com 6% de amido levou a menores teores de peróxido de hidrogênio e peroxidação lipídica e maiores teores de macromoléculas de metabolismo primário até o Dia 6, retardando a senescência e aumentando a durabilidade pós-colheita. A adição do plastificante glicerol às diferentes concentrações de filme melhorou as características de resistência do filme. Assim, recomenda-se o uso de filmes à base de amido de mandioca na concentração de 6%. O uso do adjuvante não é essencial, pois alterou as características do filme, deixando-o menos transparente e mais viscoso, dificultando a secagem.

ABSTRACT Low-temperature storage is one of the most effective techniques to maintain the quality and durability of cut flowers. Both quality maintenance and durability are dependent on plant metabolism factors such as antioxidant system. The objective was to evaluate the effect of low-temperature on precooling and storage after harvest, on the metabolism of calla lily [Zantedeschia aethiopica (L.) K. Spreng] concerning the antioxidant system, levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and malondialdehyde (MDA). Therefore, different storage temperatures (4 ºC and 21 ºC) were tested as well as the effect of precooling in different periods (0 to 24 hours). It was observed that the activity of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) was increased at 4 °C, as well as inflorescence durability in the commercial standard (around 12 days). At 21 °C, the content of H2O2 and MDA was higher and the visual quality reduction in the inflorescence was accelerated. Low-temperature leads to a higher activity of the enzymes of the antioxidant system (CAT and SOD) and increases postharvest longevity for calla lily. Precooling did not influence the visual quality and longevity of calla lily. Long-term exposure periods at low temperatures, with 12 and 24 hours of precooling caused stress, evidenced higher MDA levels and higher CAT activity. SOD activity was related to low temperature and shorter precooling periods resulted in better antioxidant system activity and lower MDA levels.

RESUMO O armazenamento em baixa temperatura é uma das técnicas mais eficazes para manter a qualidade e a durabilidade das flores cortadas. Tanto a manutenção da qualidade quanto a durabilidade são dependentes de fatores do metabolismo da planta como o sistema antioxidante. O objetivo foi avaliar o efeito da baixa temperatura no pré-resfriamento e armazenamento pós-colheita, no metabolismo do copo-de-leite [Zantedeschia aethiopica (L.) K. Spreng] quanto ao sistema antioxidante, níveis de peróxido de hidrogênio (H2O2) e malondialdeído (MDA). Portanto, diferentes temperaturas de armazenamento (4 ºC e 21 ºC) foram testadas assim como o efeito do pré-resfriamento em diferentes períodos (0 a 24 horas). Foi observado que a atividade da catalase (CAT) e da superóxido dismutase (SOD) aumentou no armazenamento à 4 °C, assim como a durabilidade da inflorescência no padrão comercial (aproximadamente 12 dias). À 21 °C, o teor de H2O2 e MDA foi maior e a redução da qualidade visual na inflorescência foi acelerada. A baixa temperatura leva a uma maior atividade das enzimas do sistema antioxidante (CAT e SOD) e aumenta a longevidade pós-colheita do copo-de-leite. O pré-resfriamento não influenciou na qualidade visual e longevidade do copo-de-leite. Períodos de exposição de longa duração a baixas temperaturas, com 12 e 24 horas de pré-resfriamento causaram estresse, evidenciados por maiores níveis de MDA e maior atividade de CAT. A atividade da SOD foi relacionada à baixa temperatura e períodos mais curtos de pré-resfriamento resultaram em melhor atividade do sistema antioxidante e menores níveis de MDA.

ABSTRACT Genipa americana L. is a forest species of high socioeconomic potential. However, predatory extractivism actions threaten its existence, making it necessary to adopt conservationist practices. G. americana seeds show sensitivity to desiccation and cooling, making it unfeasible for conservation by conventional methods. Thus, cryopreservation is an promising alternative for the long-term conservation of species that produce unorthodox seeds, such as the genipap. In this sense, the objective was to cryopreservation of seeds of G. americana and to evaluate the effects of desiccation and freezing on germination and establishment of seedlings. Initially, seeds were dehydrated in silica gel 0, 16, 18, 20, 22 and 24 h, and then were cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen (LN) (-196 °C) during 24 h. After thawing, the viability and germination were analyzed. Dehydrated and non-cryopreserved seeds were also analyzed. The silica gel desiccation caused a reduction in viability and germination of the seeds of G. americana. The initial seed water content was so high (47%) that storage in LN (+LN) without prior dehydration treatment resulted in seed mortality. It was verified that, the dehydration in silica gel for the minimum time 20 h (corresponding to 14% water content) provides greater freezing tolerance, allowing the successful cryopreservation. Silica gel dehydration followed by immersion in LN was shown to be highly efficient for cryopreservation of seeds of G. americana, besides germinatio after thawing, high survival rates (100%) were obtained, with growth and normal establishment of the seedlings after acclimatization.

Abstract The ornamental plant sector is growing due to the development of new species and technologies. The focus of research is to extend the shelf life of cut flowers to maintain quality and customer satisfaction. Techniques such as storage at low temperatures, use of preservative solutions, and new technologies such as nanotechnology can help maintain the quality of the floral stem. The present review aims to analyze various techniques used to extend the post-harvest shelf life of floral stems. For this purpose, a systematic search was conducted on major indexing platforms for studies published in 2023, which were subjected to a meta-analysis. The global effect size and moderator effects were calculated to assist in decision-making for future studies in floriculture. The results indicated that the addition of preservatives to solutions, variations in storage temperature, and the use of electromagnetic fields were the most effective techniques in extending the shelf life of cut flowers. However, techniques such as dry conditioning and the use of coating films did not show significant results in maintaining commercial quality. It was found that conservative solution research is still the main focus of research at major cut flower technology centers. The meta-analysis highlights the importance of further deepening and/or improving research on techniques that have shown less effective results, and developing new technologies to prolong the vase life of floral stems in order to improve post-harvest quality.

Resumo O setor de plantas ornamentais está crescendo devido ao desenvolvimento de novas espécies e tecnologias. O foco da pesquisa é estender a vida útil das flores cortadas para manter a qualidade e a satisfação do cliente. Técnicas como armazenamento em baixas temperaturas, uso de soluções conservantes e novas tecnologias como a nanotecnologia podem ajudar a manter a qualidade da haste floral. A presente revisão tem como objetivo analisar diversas técnicas utilizadas para prolongar a vida útil de hastes florais pós-colheita. Para tal, foi realizada uma busca sistemática nas principais plataformas indexadoras de estudos publicados em 2023, os quais foram submetidos a uma meta-análise. Calculou-se o tamanho do efeito global e o efeito por moderadores, com o intuito de auxiliar na tomada de decisão para futuros estudos na floricultura. Os resultados indicaram que a adição de conservantes nas soluções, variações nas temperaturas de armazenamento e o uso de campos eletromagnéticos foram as técnicas mais eficazes para prolongar a vida útil das hastes florais em vasos. No entanto, técnicas como o condicionamento a seco e o uso de filmes de revestimento não apresentaram resultados significativos em manter a qualidade comercial. Foi verificado que as pesquisas com soluções conservantes ainda são o principal foco dos trabalhos de grandes centros de tecnologia de flores de corte. A meta-análise destaca a importância de aprofundar e/ou aperfeiçoar as pesquisas em técnicas que apresentaram resultados menos eficazes e desenvolver novas tecnologias para prolongar a vida útil das hastes florais, a fim de melhorar a qualidade pós-colheita.

ABSTRACT Dry conditioning and sucrose pulsing are techniques used to improve the durability of flower stems. Dry conditioning helps to balance the osmotic potential of the flower stems and can be applied after harvest and transportation. The objective was to evaluate how different dry conditioning times followed by sucrose pulsing may affect the postharvest quality, durability, and physiological aspects of torch ginger flower stems. For this purpose, flower stems were collected and submitted to dry conditioning for different periods: 0-h, 3-h, 6-h, 12-h, and 24-h. Every 3 days, visual quality, percentage of true flowers, absorption rate, water content, fresh and dry weights, and colorimetric parameters were evaluated. The concentration of pigments, biochemistry of the antioxidant system, and macromolecules were analyzed. Dry conditioning for more than 12-h is not recommended as it leads to a loss of quality and durability in torch ginger flower stems and accelerates senescence. The absorption rate decreases and pigments break down after this period, while H2O2 and lipid peroxidation concentrations increase. Furthermore, sugar and protein reserves are consumed during senescence. It is recommended to hydrate harvested stems immediately to avoid the negative effects of dry conditioning on postharvest quality and durability.

Abstract With the occurrence of the COVID-19 pandemic, different areas were affected, with positive or negative effects, as a function of the conditions imposed above all by gardening activities. This brought effects on the production of ornamental plants. In this context, the objective of this study was to analyse the situation of production, commercialization and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the ornamental plants market in the city of Dona Euzébia-MG. A questionnaire with objective and discursive questions was applied to the city producers (30). The production of seedlings in Dona Euzébia is economically and socially important. Most producers have properties with 5 hectares, are in activity for a range of 5 to 19 years and have between 2 to 5 employees. With the onset of the pandemic, the market for seedlings and ornamental plants in Dona Euzébia was positively modified, with an increase in plant sales, which led to changes in production and in the sales process. During the period, producers took all measures to prevent the spread of the virus. The interviews showed that ornamental plants were among the main species cultivated and among the most sought during the pandemic period analyzed in this study. Furthermore, despite the restrictions and the uncertain scenario, there is optimism among producers, especially in terms of post-pandemic sales.

Resumo Com o surgimento da pandemia do COVID-19 os mercados das mais diferentes áreas foram atingidos, positivamente ou negativamente. Neste sentido, o objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar a situação de produção, comercialização e o impacto da pandemia do COVID-19 sobre o mercado de plantas ornamentais da cidade de Dona Euzébia-MG. Diante disto um questionário com perguntas objetivas e discursivas, foi aplicado aos (30) produtores da cidade. A maioria dos produtores possui propriedades com 5 hectares, estão em atividade no intervalo de 5 a 19 anos e possuem entre 2 a 5 funcionários. Com o surgimento da pandemia, o mercado de mudas e plantas ornamentais em Dona Euzébia foi modificado positivamente, sendo relatado o aumento na comercialização de plantas, o que gerou alterações na produção e no processo de vendas. Durante o período, os produtores adotaram todas as medidas de prevenção contra a disseminação do vírus. As entrevistas mostraram que as plantas ornamentais estavam entre as principais espécies cultivadas e entre as mais procuradas durante o período de pandemia em que este trabalho analisou. Além disso, apesar das restrições e do cenário de incertezas, há um otimismo dos produtores do município especialmente nas vendas pós pandemia.

Resumo Strelitzia ou ave-do-paraíso, é uma importante planta ornamental tropical de difícil propagação devido aos problemas de dormência das sementes e ao reduzido número de mudas obtidas nas divisões das plantas. Com o maior conhecimento de sua estrutura, é possível desenvolver estratégias para melhorar o processo de propagação dessa espécie, uma vez que as informações sobre estes aspectos são limitadas. Assim, o objetivo foi caracterizar sementes e embriões de Strelitzia reginae. A caracterização das sementes foi realizada por meio de análise de imagens em equipamento GroundEye, Raio-X e análises anatômicas e bioquímicas. Adicionalmente, foram obtidas as seguintes características biométricas das sementes: área de 0,33 cm2, diâmetro máximo de 0,736 cm, diâmetro lateral máximo de 0,59 cm, diâmetro mínimo de 0,58 cm e perímetro de 2,47 cm. As sementes de S. reginae podem ser consideradas amiláceas por conterem 15% de amido. Pela análise anatômica do tegumento, observou-se a presença de uma exotesta (ex) e uma camada parenquimática posterior que foi dividida em mesotesta (m) e endotesta (en). A caracterização de sementes e embriões de estrelícia apresentou observações relevantes para a taxonomia e fisiologia desta espécie. As sementes são aleuro-amiláceas e apresentam área média de 0,33 cm2, com diâmetro lateral máximo de 0,59 cm. Como resultado de estudos anatômicos, foi possível identificar o tegumento responsável pela dormência.

Abstract Strelitzia or bird-of-paradise, is an important tropical ornamental plant that is difficult to propagate because of seed dormancy issues and the low number of seedlings obtained from plant divisions. With greater knowledge of its structure, it is possible to develop strategies to improve the propagation process for this species, since information on this subject is currently limited. Thus, the objective was to carry out an anatomical, morphological and biochemical characterization of Strelitzia reginae seeds and embryos. The characterization of the seeds was performed through image analysis using GroundEye equipment, X-rays, and anatomical and biochemical analyses. Additionally, the following biometric characteristics of the seeds were obtained: an area of 0.33 cm2, a maximum diameter of 0.736 cm, a maximum lateral diameter of 0.59 cm, a minimum diameter of 0.58 cm, and a perimeter of 2.47 cm. The seeds of S. reginae can be considered starchy since they contain 15% starch. By integument anatomical analysis, we observed the presence of an exotesta (ex) and a posterior parenchymatic layer that was divided into a mesotest (m) and endotest (en). The characterization of Strelitzia reginae seeds and embryos showed relevant observations for the taxonomy and physiology of this species. The seeds are aleurostarches and present an area of 0.33 cm2 on average, with maximum lateral diameter of 0.59 cm. As result of anatomical studies, it was possible to determine coat responsible for integument dormancy.

Resumo O cultivo de plantas em sistema sem solo é uma alternativa para a produção de flores com alta qualidade. O copo-de-leite é normalmente produzido em canteiros, mas tem apresentado algumas limitações à medida que ocorrem infecções bacterianas. Uma alternativa pode ser um cultivo sem solo. Assim, experimentos foram conduzidos com o objetivo de avaliar o desenvolvimento do copo-de-leite em dois tipos de sistemas de produção hidropônicos. O sistema semi-hidropônico foi testado utilizando como substratos ou meios de cultivo fibra de coco, areia, vermiculita e espuma fenólica. Para o outro sistema, fluxo e refluxo, os substratos testados foram vermiculita, fibra de coco e argila expandida. Duas soluções nutricionais diferentes foram testadas em ambos os sistemas. Em geral, o cultivo de copo-de-leite foi adaptado e as plantas apresentaram bom desenvolvimento em cultivo sem solo. O melhor desenvolvimento inicial do copo-de-leite foi proporcionado pelo uso de vermiculita e areia como substratos em semi-hidropônico. E para o sistema de fluxo e refluxo, a fibra de coco induziu melhor desenvolvimento. Como conclusão, os sistemas de cultivo hidropônico são eficientes para o desenvolvimento inicial do copo-de-leite. Os substratos recomendados são os de menor porosidade, como areia, vermiculita e fibra de coco.

Abstract The soilless cultivation of plants is an alternative for the production of flowers with high quality. Calla lily is normally produced on soil benches, but have shown some limitations as bacterial infections occur. One alternative may be a soilless cultivation. Hence, experiments were conducted with the objective to evaluate the development of calla lily in two types of hydroponic production systems. The semihydroponic system was tested using as substrates or growing media such as, coconut fiber, sand, vermiculite, and phenolic foam sheets. For the other system, ebb-and-flow, the substrates tested were vermiculite, coconut fiber, and expanded clay. Two different nutritional solutions were tested in both systems. in the semihydroponic system. In general, calla lily was adapted and showed a good development in a soilless cultivation. The best initial development of the calla lily was provided using vermiculite and sand as substrates on semihydroponic. And for the ebb-and-flow system, coconut fiber induced better development. As conclusion, hydroponic cultivation systems are efficient for the initial development of calla lily. The recommended substrates are those with lower porosity, such as sand, vermiculite, and coconut fiber.

Resumo Além de criar paisagens cênicas e embelezar áreas urbanas, o cultivo de árvores em áreas urbanas pode beneficiar os ecossistemas e melhorar a sustentabilidade das cidades. Além de algumas indicações de espécies adequadas para uso em vias públicas, existem poucos estudos e conhecimentos sobre o comportamento das espécies nativas e usos para este fim. Desta forma, o objetivo foi avaliar o desempenho de algumas espécies nativas na arborização urbana de vias públicas. As espécies a serem avaliadas foram selecionadas considerando características como ocorrência (bioma e região), altura (tamanho médio ou alto), taxa de crescimento (moderado a rápido) e floração (estação e cor) sendo ao final foram selecionadas 11 espécies. As espécies Senna macranthera, Andira fraxinifolia, Pterocarpus violaceus, Cordia superba, Jacaranda cuspidifolia, Peltophorum dubium, Inga vera, Inga edulis, Senna multijuga, Handroanthus impetiginosus e Stifftia chrysantha foram plantadas em via pública em Lavras-MG, Brasil (Bioma: Mata Atlântica) e avaliados observando a sobrevivência inicial, taxa de crescimento, copa, diâmetro à altura do peito (DAP) e ocorrência de danos e doenças. Em relação às espécies testadas, A. fraxinifolia e S. macranthera apresentaram baixa sobrevivência após o plantio (10 meses) e precisaram ser substituídas por outras espécies. Handroanthus impetiginosus e P. violaceus apresentaram o melhor desempenho, com boa taxa de crescimento, seguidos por J. cuspidifolia, I. vera e I. edulis.

Abstract In addition to creating scenic landscapes and beautifying urban areas, the cultivation of trees in urban areas can benefit ecosystems and improve cities sustainability. Besides some indications of adequate species for use in public pathways, there are few studies and knowledge regarding the native species behavior and uses for this purpose. In this way, the objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of some native species in urban afforestation of public pathways. Species to be evaluated were selected considering characteristics such as occurrence (biome and region), height (medium or high size), growth rate (moderate to fast), and flowering (season and color) and at the end, 11 species were selected. The species Senna macranthera, Andira fraxinifolia, Pterocarpus violaceus, Cordia superba, Jacaranda cuspidifolia, Peltophorum dubium, Inga vera, Inga edulis, Senna multijuga, Handroanthus impetiginosus and Stifftia chrysantha were planted on a public pathway at Lavras-MG, Brazil (Biome: Mata Atlântica) and evaluated observing the initial survival, growth rate, canopy, diameter at breast height (DBH) and occurrence of damage and disease. Concerning the tested species, A. fraxinifolia and S. macranthera exhibited low survival after planting (10 months) and must be replaced for other species. Handroanthus impetiginosus and P. violaceus exhibited the best performance, presenting a good growth rate, followed by J. cuspidifolia, I. vera, and I. edulis.

Resumo O copo-de-leite é uma importante espécie para o setor de floricultura e o conhecimento acerca dos aspectos nutricionais da cultura são imprescindíveis para o seu cultivo comercial. Como ocorrem variações nos sintomas de deficiências nutricionais entre as espécies, torna-se necessário o estudo do desenvolvimento das plantas e do seu estado nutricional quando cultivadas com a omissão dos nutrientes. Dessa forma, este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o desenvolvimento das plantas e identificar os teores de nutrientes e as interações entre os mesmos em condições de cultivo sob deficiência nutricional Mudas micropropagadas de copo-de-leite foram submetidas a dez tratamentos que consistiram no uso da solução nutritiva completa e na omissão de N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Fe, B e Mn. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições. Observou-se que as omissões de P, S, Ca, K, N e B influenciaram no desenvolvimento da planta, com menor produção de folhas que se apresentaram de tamanho reduzido, com redução no número de brotos e emissão de novas folhas nos brotos, além de menores valores de massa seca. Dentre essas, as deficiências nutricionais que mais prejudicaram o crescimento e a qualidade das plantas de copo-de-leite foram as de N, B, e Ca. Os tratamentos com deficiência de B e N impediram o florescimento de copo-de-leite e a ausência de S e K proporcionaram a produção de inflorescências de menor qualidade e com malformação. As principais interações que ocorreram foram o aumento do teor de K (folhas), Fe (folhas) e Mn (folhas e inflorescências) na ausência de Ca. Na ausência de Mg houve aumento de Ca (folhas, rizomas e inflorescências), Zn (folhas e raízes) e Fe (rizomas). Pode-se concluir que as deficiências nutricionais que mais afetaram a produção de inflorescências foram de B, N, P, K, Ca e S, e que as principais interações nutricionais ocorreram na ausência de Ca com aumento de K, Fe e Mn e aumento de Ca, Fe e Zn na ausência de Mg.

Abstract Knowledge about the nutritional aspects of calla lily, an important species for the floriculture industry, is essential for quality on cultivation. As there are variations in the symptoms of nutritional deficiencies among species, it is necessary to study the development of plants and their nutritional status when grown under nutrient omission. Thus, the aim was to evaluate the development of calla lily plants and identify the levels of nutrients and their interactions in cultivation conditions under nutritional deficiency. The treatments consisted in the use of the complete nutrition solution and the omission of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Fe, B, and Mn, separately. The experimental design was in randomized block design with four replications. The omissions of P, S, Ca, K, N, and B have influenced the plant development providing lower production of leaves and in small size, reduction on shoots production and less leaves emitted by the shoots, besides a lower values of dry matter. Among these nutrients, the deficiencies that most affected the growth and quality of calla lily plants development were N, B and Ca. The B and N deficiency inhibited the flowering and the absence of S and K provided inflorescences production with lower quality, besides malformation. The main interactions that occurred were increasing in the content of K (leaves), Fe (leaves) and Mn (leaves and inflorescences) in the absence of Ca. In the absence of Mg there was an increase in Ca (leaves, rhizomes, and inflorescences), Zn (leaves and roots) and Fe (rhizomes). It can be concluded that the nutritional deficiencies that most affected the production of inflorescences in calla lily were those of B, N, P, K, Ca, and S and the main nutritional interactions occurred in the absence of Ca with an increase in K, Fe and Mn and an increase in Ca, Fe and Zn in the absence of Mg.

Resumo O uso de produtos químicos em soluções de armazenamento tem demonstrado efeitos benéficos para a conservação pós-colheita de flores. No entanto, o efeito dessas soluções nas relações hídricas de algumas espécies ainda é desconhecido. Portanto, objetivou-se avaliar as relações hídricas em flores de copo-de-leite colhidas em diferentes estágios e mantidas em soluções com diferentes produtos. As hastes das flores foram colhidas em dois estágios de abertura da espata: o estágio inicial (cartucho) e 1/3 de abertura. Estes foram acondicionados em soluções com água (controle), 100 mg L-1 de hipoclorito de sódio (NaClO), 100 mg L-1 de sulfato de alumínio [Al2(SO4)3], 200 mg L-1 8-hidroxiquinolina (8-HQ) e 10 mg de nitrato de prata L-1 (AgNO3). Ao longo de 9 dias, as hastes florais foram mantidas em uma sala com temperatura de 21 ± 2°C e umidade relativa de 75% ± 5% e avaliadas quanto ao pH da solução, absorção de água, transpiração e qualidade comercial. A adição de substâncias de conservação à solução de armazenamento induziu a abertura da espata nos dois estágios de colheita e contribuiu para a absorção de água pelas hastes, melhorando a hidratação das flores. A melhor manutenção do balanço hídrico foi observada para hastes armazenadas em água e soluções de armazenamento com Al2(SO4)3.

Abstract The use of chemicals in storage solutions has proved beneficial for the postharvest conservation of cut flowers. However, the effect of these solutions on the water relations of some species is still unknown. Therefore, the objective of the present investigation was to evaluate the water relations in calla lily flowers harvested at different stages and maintained under postharvest solutions with different chemicals. The flower stems were harvested in two stages of spathe opening: the early stage (cartridge) and the 1/3 flower opening stage. The flower stems were dipped in solutions with water (control), 100 mg L-1 sodium hypochlorite (NaClO), 100 mg L-1 aluminum sulfate [Al2(SO4)3], 200 mg L-1 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) and 10 mg L-1 silver nitrate (AgNO3). Over 9 days, the floral stems were kept in a room at 21 ± 2 °C and 75% ± 5% relative humidity and evaluated for changes in the pH of the solution and the water absorption, transpiration and commercial quality of the cut flowers. The addition of conservation substances to the storage solution induced spathe opening at both harvest stages and promoted water absorption by the stems, thus increasing the efficiency of flower hydration. The water balance maintenance was best for stems stored in water and storage solutions with Al2(SO4)3.

Resumo As áreas verdes públicas urbanas (AVPs) concebem um importante tema, pois sua presença nas cidades, ampliando o contato do homem com a natureza, além dos efeitos ambientais geram inúmeros benefícios. Dessa maneira, analisar, planejar e estimular a implantação das AVPs nas cidades é ação fundamental para a melhoria da qualidade de vida da sociedade urbana. Nesse contexto objetivou-se analisar a situação e distribuição das áreas verdes das cidades universitárias de Lavras, estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil e Newark, estado de Delaware, EUA. Para a coleta de dados foram realizadas visitas a campo e o levantamento de áreas das AVPs por meio da análise de imagens de satélite utilizando o software ArcGIS e calculados os indicadores, índice de áreas verdes (IAV) e percentual de áreas verdes (PAV). A cidade de Lavras possui um IAV de 0,54m² hab-1. O valor de PAV foi de 0,29%, não cumprindo o mínimo de 5% exigido pela lei municipal local. Além disto, existe uma má distribuição das AVPs na malha urbana. Já em Newark, a distribuição das AVPs é homogênea abrangendo todas as regiões da cidade. O IAV calculado foi de 50,2m² hab-1 e o PAV cumpriu o mínimo de 7% exigido pela sua Lei municipal de Newark. Ao comparar as duas cidades, conclui-se que Newark (DE) apresenta indicadores sobre as áreas verdes públicas, IAV (m² hab-1) e PAV (%) superiores em comparação aos valores obtidos em Lavras (MG), indicando a necessidade de ações governamentais para ampliar esses valores.

Abstract The presence of urban green spaces (UGS) increases the human’s contact with nature and provides numerous benefits to the society and the local environment. In this way, analyzing, planning and stimulating the implementation of UGS in cities is a fundamental action to improve the life quality of urban society. In this context, the aim was to analyze the situation and distribution of the green spaces of the universities cities of Lavras, Minas Gerais State (Brazil) and Newark, Delaware (USA). For data collection, researches performed field visits and used aerial photography to survey and analysis before calculating indicators including green area index (GAI) and green space ratio (GSR). The city of Lavras has a GAI of 0.54 m2 inh-1. The GSR value was 0.29%, not meeting the minimum of 5% required by local municipal law. Furthermore, there is a bad distribution of UGSs in the urban framework. However, in Newark, the distribution of UGSs is homogeneous and covers all regions of the city. The calculated GAI was 50.2 m² inh-1 and the GSR has met the 7% minimum required by its Newark Municipal Law. When comparing the two cities, in different countries and conditions it is concluded that Newark (DE) presents UGS indicators, GAI (m² inh-1) and GSR (%), higher than the values obtained in Lavras (MG), indicating the need for Government actions to increase these values.
