Abstract: Introduction: The educational environment for the clinical teaching of undergraduate medical and nursing students influences the students’ perception of significant aspects of satisfaction in the clinical learning environment. Objective: To transculturally adapt, with the concept, content and construct validity, the instrument “Undergraduate Clinical Education Environment Measure - UCEEM” into the Brazilian Portuguese language and validate the translated and adapted version; involving medical and nursing students, while experiencing clinical teaching during their undergraduate course. Method: This is a methodology study aimed at the translation, adaptation and transcultural validation process, which is divided into six steps, as proposed by Beaton. The steps consisted in the translation, translation synthesis, back-translation, proofreading by the experts committee, pre-testing and submission of the final version of the instrument to the author. Five bilingual translators participated in this process (three for the translation and two for the back-translation), as well as eight expert professionals who work as academic faculty and have Master’s and Doctoral degrees. The validation was carried out at two moments: the first one by using semantic, idiomatic, cultural and conceptual equivalence (pre-test), involving 30 medical and nursing students going through clinical teaching; and the second moment, the validation and assessment of the psychometric properties with 161 students from these same courses. Result: The transcultural adaptation carried out by eight expert professionals in this area was performed based on the experts’ considerations, in addition to the analysis and considerations of the researcher and author of the original instrument. The result of this phase led to the final version of this instrument in Brazilian Portuguese, which shows 26 items divided into two dimensions and four subscales that were maintained according to its original form. Following the filling out of the instrument by the nursing and medical students, the analysis of the Theory of Response revealed to be reliable, as determined by a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.917. According to Spearman’s correlation test, the results indicate a positive correlation between the questions. Conclusions: The Portuguese version of the UCEEM instrument showed to be adequate and useful to evaluate the satisfaction with the educational environment in clinical teaching according to the perception of medical and nursing students.

Abstract: Introduction: Flipped Classroom (FC) is an Active Learning Methodology characterized by the sending of teaching materials to students in advance, so that the classroom moment is entirely dedicated to non-expository activities. The FC was implemented in 2019 for the teaching of Clinical Examination (CE) aimed at undergraduate medical students at a Higher Education Institution in the Northeast region of Brazil. Objective: To analyze the implementation of FC for CE learning compared to the mini-exposure methodology followed by practice. Method: Analysis of educational intervention with historical control over the implementation of the FC methodology carried out in three phases. In the first, the two tutors involved in the implementation or who acted as teachers were evaluated through a semi-structured interview about the FC implementation process and its initial operation. The second consisted in the assessment of 44 medical students, through a Likert questionnaire, on learning with the new methodology. The third consisted in evaluating the grades obtained by 66 students who experienced learning with FC in relation to 142 students who experienced the previous methodology. Result: The evaluated tutors knew little about the methodology before it was implemented and believe that its implementation promoted gains, such as students’ greater dedication to individual study. The initial difficulty arose from the creation of an extensive database of questions for the pre-test, which was carried out at the beginning of the in-person moments. The evaluated students reported being well adapted and agree with the benefits of FC, including: feeling stimulated to study, developing the practice more easily and the presence of pre-tests that help to improve individual study. The results of the comparison of grades showed a significant increase in performance when comparing students who experienced the FC (9,11 - SD 0,45) with those who experienced the previous methodology (8,49 - SD 0,91). Conclusion: The methodology was satisfactorily implemented, promoted gains in learning and optimized the in-person time to be entirely dedicated to practical learning.Fluctuation of academic performance of medical students selected by affirmative action policies (PIMESP)10.1590/1981-5271v46.1-20210126.ING2024-03-08T20:29:20.585000Z2020-08-09T06:49:02.967000ZMarcomini Neto, AtílioFucuta, Patrícia da SilvaBrienze, Vânia Maria SabadottoLima, Alba Regina de AbreuBrienze, Sérgio Luís AparecidoAndré, Júlio César

Abstract: Introduction: Almost 20 years since the beginning of affirmative action implementation, there is still much discussion about the real effectiveness of these measures, especially regarding academic performance, comparing “quota holders” to “non-quota holders”, with doubts arising about whether the former can keep up with the latter. Objective: To establish a profile and compare the academic performance and other aspects related to the academic life of “quota holder” students (Inclusion Program with Merit in Public Higher Education in São Paulo - PIMESP) with the other students in their respective classes selected via broad competition (BC). Method: Retrospective cohort of 1st to 3rd-year medical students, divided in BC or PIMESP. The following were assessed: arithmetic mean of the final grades of the curricular subjects; final approval status (FAS) in the subjects; frequency; books borrowed from the library (BBLi) and participation in monitoring/academic center. Continuous variables were compared by Student’s t-test or Mann-Whitney test and categorical by chi-square or Fisher’s exact test. Values p < 0.05 were considered significant. Results: Of the 237 students included in the sample, all had completed the 1st year (2015, 2016 and 2017 entrants), 158 students (2015 and 2016 entrants) the 1st and 2nd years, and 78 (32.9%) had completed the 3rd year (2015 entrants) at the time of the survey. In the analysis of all those who had completed the 1st year, where 16% were PIMESP, there was a difference in mean final grades and FAS, higher for BC students and no difference for attendance, BBLi, participation in monitoring and academic center. In the analysis of those who had completed the 2nd year, where 15.8% were PIMESP, there was no difference between any of the studied variables. The analysis of those who had completed the 3rd year, where 15.4% were PIMESP, once again showed difference between the averages of final grades and FAS, higher for BC students, but with a less marked difference, and there were no significant differences for the other variables. Conclusion: We observed a fluctuation of academic performance among PIMESP students, towards inferior outcomes, when compared to BC students, throughout the first three years of medical school, but not for other variables. No increase in the dropout rate was observed, contrary to what is found in the literature.Prevalence of common mental disorders among medical students during the Covid-19 pandemic10.1590/1981-5271v46.1-20210242.ING2024-03-08T20:29:20.585000Z2020-08-09T06:49:02.967000ZCardoso, Ane Caroline CavalcanteBarbosa, Larissa Almeida de OliveiraQuintanilha, Luiz FernandoAvena, Kátia de Miranda

Abstract: Introduction: Common mental disorders (CMD) have been frequently identified among university students in the health area, especially in Medicine. It is believed that characteristics inherent to the course have a potential influence on the student’s mental health. When adding the pandemic context, with its inherent social restrictions, the psychological determinants related to the unknown pathology and the fear of the rapid spread of the new coronavirus, there is the possibility of increasing the risk factors for psychological distress in this population. Objective: To estimate the prevalence of CMD among medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic, analyzing its main determinants in the academic, social and economic spheres. Method: Cross-sectional study, carried out with 388 medical students in Salvador/BA., Data on sociodemographic and academic aspects, life habits, comorbidities and symptoms of non-psychotic disorders were collected using the Google Forms platform, measured by the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20). Results: The prevalence of CMD was 39.7% among medical students, with 47.4% in the basic cycle, 40.3% in the clinical cycle and 12.3% in the internship period. Among the factors associated with the emergence of CMD are sedentary lifestyle, smoking, use of substances that enhance academic performance, dissatisfaction with one’s academic performance, poor sleep quality, lack of appetite, frequent headaches, poor digestion, suicidal ideation and sadness. There was a higher rate of non-psychotic mental disorders among women, with no difference regarding the academic cycle and the administrative type of the educational institution. Conclusion: During the COVID-19 pandemic, a significant prevalence of CMD was demonstrated among female, white, single medical students who live with family members and do not have their own income. Although studies suggest an increase in the prevalence among university students at the present time, the data from the present study remain in agreement with the literature data prior to the pandemic, showing that the medical course itself is the main risk factor for higher rates of CMD in this population. However, further studies on the long-term impact of the pandemic on the mental health of university students are still necessary.

Burnout Syndrome: an analysis of the mental health of medical residents in a teaching hospital10.1590/1981-5271v46.1-20210179.ING2024-03-08T20:29:20.585000Z2020-08-09T06:49:02.967000ZCosta, José AugustoFasanella, Nicoli AbrãoSchmitz, Beatriz MendonçaSiqueira, Patrick Cavalcanti

Abstract: Introduction: Medical residency can cause burnout syndrome, a physical, emotional and mental state of extreme exhaustion. Objective: This research sought to describe and analyze the prevalence of burnout in resident physicians linked to a teaching Hospital and to verify whether there is a correlation with sociodemographic and socioeconomic data. Method: This is an analytical, cross-sectional and quantitative study using the MBI (Malasch Burnout Inventory) version HSS (Human Services Survey), the Brazilian Economic Classification Criterion (CCEB) of ABEP and sociodemographic questions. Result: Of the enrolled residents, 102 participated in the survey. Of these, 76.47% showed a high level in at least one of the three domains of the burnout index and 21.57% of the residents showed a high level of burnout. There was a significant relationship between a larger number of children and the presence of emotional exhaustion (P=0.047), a higher frequency of depersonalization for surgical area residents (P=0.013) and reduced professional accomplishment, with an average income of R$ 2,965.69 and R$ 10,386.52 (P=0.006). No significant relationship was found between burnout and sociodemographic and socioeconomic variables. Conclusion: The results show that resident physicians are exposed to situations that contribute to high levels of stress and distress. Further studies on the subject are still necessary.Palliative care in medical education: the students’ perception10.1590/1981-5271v46.1-20210310.ING2024-03-08T20:29:20.585000Z2020-08-09T06:49:02.967000ZCastro, Andrea AugustaTaquette, Stella ReginaPereira, Caio Assunção RochaMarques, Natan Iório

Abstract: Introduction: Population aging, longer life expectancy and the increase in the prevalence of chronic diseases have brought new health demands, among them, palliative care (PC). Although present in the clinical routine, this topic has not yet been included in most medical schools in Brazil. Objective: To know the teaching-learning process in PC according to the perception of medical students from schools that have this subject. Method: Qualitative method through interviews with 35 medical students from 14 medical schools located in the Northeast, Southeast and South regions of the country. Results: The reports were classified into three categories: conception of PC, changes perceived after exposure to PC teaching, challenges and successful strategies identified in PC teaching. Students recognize the value of teaching in PC and have a greater understanding of PC approach and its early indication for people with complex chronic conditions. The inclusion of the topic contributed to the overcoming of fears and taboos related to death, providing greater comfort to deal with human suffering, adding emotional skills. The formal education in PC allowed understanding the person in their biopsychosocial and spiritual dimension. They stressed the importance of communication skills to communicate difficult news, symptom management, teamwork and an individualized approach to the person and their family. Although they identify little theoretical-practical integration in the teaching-learning scenario in PC, they report an interest in the topic, and indicated successive experiences as strategies throughout the training, in a humanist axis. Conclusion: PC teaching brings contributions to medical training that go beyond the learning of the subject and reinforces the development of empathy and compassion, recognized as essential in this profession, as well as the relevance of assertiveness in the management of suffering and the comprehensive care of people with advanced diseases.

Videogravação e <i>videofeedback</i> no ensino-aprendizagem de habilidades de exame físico10.1590/1981-5271v46.1-202101412024-03-08T20:29:20.585000Z2020-08-09T06:49:02.967000ZOliveira, Leonam CostaPaz, Francisco Lucas Lima daMedeiros, Ana Andreza AlbuquerqueConceição, Eduardo PintoGuimarães, Any Carolina CardosoPinto, Antonione Santos Bezerra

Generalist training and the professional practice option according to the student’s perception10.1590/1981-5271v46.1-20210461.ING2024-03-08T20:29:20.585000Z2020-08-09T06:49:02.967000ZSilva, Angélica Pedreira daAzevedo, Lorena Moreira Fagundes deCruz, Camila Antunes RibeiroSantos, Eligleide Assis dosBezerra, Walesca Fernanda GomesWahrhaftig, Katia de Macedo

Abstract: Introduction: Since the National Curricular Guidelines for the Medicine course were implemented, with emphasis on the training of professionals with a generalist profile, the factors that may contribute to the interest in professional practice are unknown. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the perception of medical students regarding their generalist training and the factors that influence the desire for professional practice. Methodology: Descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study of qualitative and explanatory character with 523 students from different medical courses in the city of Salvador-Bahia, who answered an online survey after signing the informed consent form. The sample was categorized into interest in Immediate Specialization (IS) and among those who intend to Act as a Generalist (AG). The age and period of the course were also categorized into groups. Results: The age of the sample was 18 to 25 years in 83.7% (n = 438), with 72.5% (n = 380) being female, attending 69% of the 4º to 9º semesters (n = 363). The Immediate Specialization group represented 27.2% (95% CI: 35% -73%) and the group that intends to Act as a Generalist, 72.8% (95% CI: 68% -76%). General training did not influence the option for professional practice with RR = 0.81 (95% CI: 0.55-1.20) p = 0.308. The factors associated with AG were believing in the generalist’s resolution capacity and SUS guidelines (p <0.001), the desire to contribute to society (p = 0.005) and society’s credibility (p = 0.044). Conclusion: Students perceive that the curriculum includes general training, however it did not influence the interest in professional practice. The desire to act as a generalist is present in a significant number among them, driven by altruism and the desire to contribute to society, supported by the organic laws that underlie the SUS Guidelines, while not feeling valued and having its credibility, questioned by society, only stimulates professional practice on a temporary basis.

Implementation of mentoring in a medical school - mentors and students’ perceptions10.1590/1981-5271v46.1-20200501.ING2024-03-08T20:29:20.585000Z2020-08-09T06:49:02.967000ZSilva, Ester Franco de Souza FreitasMiyasaki, Maria Cristina de Oliveira Santos

Abstract: Introduction: In medical education, mentoring has the important function of supporting and complementing student’s education through their relationship with a teacher, which fosters student’s global development. Objective: to assess the strengths and weaknesses of a mentoring program in a private school from the perspective of mentors and mentees; to identify, among students who did not participate in mentoring, the reason for not participating, knowledge about the concept of mentoring and the desire to participate in the future. Method: Cross-sectional, descriptive study with a qualitative approach. The study participants included mentors, mentees and students who did not participate in the mentoring program. All participants answered a semi-structured questionnaire and the answers were submitted to a qualitative approach analysis. Results: The answers were divided into two broad categories: strengths - bonding, exposing feelings/self-disclosure, mentoring as a two-way street, space for integration - and weaknesses - organization and scheduling difficulties, conducting group dynamics and addressed topics, of integration between group members. The students who did not participate in mentoring attributed their non-participation to lack of time and reported they wanted to participate in the future. Conclusion: the reports showed strengths and weaknesses of mentoring for mentors and mentees, as well as aspects to be improved. Prospective studies of mentoring programs are needed to identify aspects that promote the development of participants and reduce their suffering, as well as their impact on medical education.Avaliação do comportamento de risco de graduandos de Medicina em uma universidade de Alagoas10.1590/1981-5271v46.1-202102172024-03-08T20:29:20.585000Z2020-08-09T06:49:02.967000ZPires, Aline Maria Fatel da SilvaGusmão, Waléria Dantas PereiraPureza, Isabele Rejane de Oliveira MaranhãoGomes, Maria Helena LeitãoCustódio, Rafaella Maria Bezerra PinheiroOliveira, José João Felipe Costa de

Abstract: Introduction: In the medical field there are still gaps regarding the concept of death and the finitude of life, very often understood as a failure of Medicine and not as an integral part of existence. In this context, the view of death as an error, the failure of a treatment, generates anxiety and demands by doctors themselves, which can affect their physical, mental and spiritual health. Objective: To analyze the relationship between spirituality, religious practices, and quality of life of medical professionals in the field of oncology and palliative care who deal with the finitude of life on a daily basis in a reference hospital in northeastern Brazil. Method: Cross-sectional, analytical and quantitative study with an intentional and convenience sample. Questionnaires were applied to describe the sociodemographic profile, quality of life (WHOQOL - bref) and spirituality using the Brief Religious/Spiritual Coping Scale (Brief RCOPE) and the Spirituality Self Rating Scale (SSRS). Data analysis used the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), version 13.0 for Windows. The study was approved by the REC of IMIP under Opinion 2,890,118. Result: Twenty oncologists and palliative care physicians participated in the study; most were women (55%), of white ethnicity (60%), Catholic (80%) and married (70%). The SSRS scale identified an average score of 21.75. In the Brief RCOPE, the positive aspect scored 2.64, the negative aspect 1.47, and the total aspect 2.04. There was a significant positive association between the SSRS and RCOP results (p=0.0). When associating WHOQOL - bref with Brief RCOPE, a direct relationship with statistical significance of the psychological domain was obtained with total RCOP (p-value: 0.01) and with negative RCOP (p-value: 0.03). Conclusion: The study showed a relationship between spirituality and quality of life, as well as positive aspects of faith for coping with everyday stress, corroborating the discussion of the importance of including spirituality as a protective factor in health.PrevTev: construção e validação de aplicativo móvel para orientações sobre tromboembolismo venoso10.1590/1981-5271v46.1-202104052024-03-08T20:29:20.585000Z2020-08-09T06:49:02.967000ZToledo, Thaís Ramos de OliveiraPeres, Angela LimaBarros, Pedro Edson SilvaRusso, Rafaela CostaCarvalho, Lúcyo Wagner Torres de

Abstract: Introduction: Professionalism is an essential condition for the doctor’s performance. The specialty of Gynecology and Obstetrics (GO) has been marked by a growing demand for disciplinary proceedings. Faced with this reality, the American College of Gynecology and Obstetrics (ACOG) recommended recording destructive or hostile behaviors that affect patient safety and the quality of care, remediate them and educate the clinical staff of institutions about it. Despite its importance for the training of future professionals, the lack of consensus about its definition and measurement methods make it difficult to implement targeted actions aimed at this purpose. Objective: This study´s objective was to know the senses and meanings attributed by Gynecology and Obstetrics (GO) residents to medical professionalism. Method: An exploratory, qualitative study was carried out through focal groups with 21 GO residents from Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil. The analysis of content in the thematic modality supported the data analysis and the interpretation was supported by Symbolic Interactionism. Results: The senses and meanings attributed to professionalism by the residents were expressed in four topics: set of conducts for the benefit of the patient; doctor-patient relationship and relationship with the work team; set of professional attributes; and moral and ethical exercise of the profession. Conclusion: Professionalism is understood as a set of characteristics that include the comprehensive training of the physician, based on skills, scientific knowledge, values, technical skills, clinical reasoning, enabling the exercise of Medicine with respect, morals and ethics. The meaning attributed by tutors to experiences involving human rights in the academic environment10.1590/1981-5271v46.1-20210276.ING2024-03-08T20:29:20.585000Z2020-08-09T06:49:02.967000ZOliveira, Jamilly Nazário Souza deFernandes, Alicia Pereira BanjaLima, Hugo Vinícius Carvalho de Abreu eFalbo, Ana RodriguesCaminha, Maria de Fátima Costa

Abstract: Introduction: Human Rights are inherent to the human condition, considering all aspects of life: the right to life, to an education, to freedom, to religion, to security and to work. Given that, it is important to nurture a Human Rights culture in educational institutions, aiming at improving inter-personal dynamics and the educational environment. The tutors’ development, in this aspect, becomes fundamental. Objective: To understand the meanings attributed by tutors to their experiences involving Human Rights situations in the academic environment as the first step to implement teacher development in this area. Methods: qualitative study involving tutors from a college located in northeastern Brazil, which employs the Problem-Based Learning methodology, between December of 2019 and September of 2020. The collection was performed through focal groups with intentional selection. The script for the discussion was based in the National Plan for Human Rights Education, The Human Rights Education Manual, The Universal Human Rights Declaration and articles related to the discussion topic. Bardin content analysis was used. The project was approved by the Ethics Committee under CAAE number 22696919.3.0000.5569. Results: The studied analytic categories were: gender and sexuality, communication and freedom of speech, social minorities and student self-esteem and stigmatization. During the process of reinterpreting the collected content, the following empirical subcategories were identified: ableism, fatphobia, psychophobia and interpersonal conflicts. The tutors revealed having experienced conflicts involving Human Rights, as follows: gender oppression; homophobia by students and teachers; lack of racial representativeness among the college student population; fatphobia in the academic environment; decrease in student’s performance due to mental health issues. The participant tutors also expressed insecurity when it came to intervening and giving feedback in such situations, as well as some lack of knowledge about Human Rights. Conclusion: The tutors reported episodes that demonstrated Human Rights violation practices in the academic environment and showed to be insecure about intervening in such situations, especially when these situations led to conflict between the students.Assistive technologies for visual and hearing impairments offered to medical students in Brazil10.1590/1981-5271v46.1-20210264.ING2024-03-08T20:29:20.585000Z2020-08-09T06:49:02.967000ZNascimento, Maria Isabel doTorres, Rhian CostaRibeiro, Klynsman Grisotto Faria

Abstract: Introduction: Assistive technologies (AT) are products, equipment, devices, resources, methodologies and strategies that can be used in education to promote autonomous learning and academic success for students who have some type of disability. Objective: The objective was to analyze the AT available in medical courses in Brazil to support medical students with hearing and/or visual impairment. Methods: This is a descriptive study that used data from undergraduate medical courses participating in the Higher Education Census coordinated by Anísio Teixeira National Institute of Educational Studies and Research (Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisas Educacionais Anísio Teixeira, INEP), in 2018. AT for students with hearing and/or visual impairment that were available in medical courses were evaluated considering the characteristics of the institution, such as the type of administration (public versus private), location (capital versus interior) and the year the course started (from the year 2000 versus before year 2000). Results: In 2018, there were 323 active medical courses in Brazil. Most of them (90%) confirmed the offer of at least one type of AT. The discipline of Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS, Linguagem Brasileira de Sinais) was the most frequently offered AT (80%) and tactile material was the least offered AT (32%). There was greater comprehensiveness of AT supply for medical students in courses with a private administration, compared to the public ones. The location and the year the course started did not influence the provision of AT in Brazil. The courses showed better AT comprehensiveness to support students with hearing impairment than those with visual impairment. Conclusion: Most medical courses supply AT for people with visual and/or hearing impairments who are medical students, but incompletely. Although the location of the course and the length of time that the course has been active did not influence AT provision, the study revealed inequalities. Medical students with visual and/or hearing impairments have access to assistive technologies especially in courses with private administration, adding more barriers to their financial possibilities, which are already sufficiently affected by the fact that they have to meet the essential needs common to people living with disabilities.World experiences in preceptorship in medical undergraduate education: an integrative review10.1590/1981-5271v46.1-20210228.ING2024-03-08T20:29:20.585000Z2020-08-09T06:49:02.967000ZNordi, Aline Barreto de AlmeidaKishi, Renata Giannecchini BongiovanniCarvalho, Beatriz BareaEvangelista, Danilo NogueiraGaion, João Pedro de Barros FernandesSaggin, JuliaMaida, Letícia BassaniSilva, Majorie Valéria Lopes da

Abstract: Introduction: The preceptor, as the physician who facilitates the teaching-learning process in practice settings, is essential for in service-training in the undergraduate medical school. The importance of these professionals in the training of new physicians highlights the need to understand the preceptorship activity from a medical education perspective. Objective: To verify, in the scientific literature, global experiences in preceptorship in the undergraduate medical school. Method: Integrative literature review using standardized descriptors in the following databases: LILACS - Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences, MEDLINE - Online System for Analysis and Recovery of Medical Literature and SciELO - Scientific Electronic Library Online, between 2009 to 2019. Analysis of the articles was carried out using the thematic category technique. Results: The search in the databases resulted in 274 studies, of which 23 were analyzed and discussed in full. Detailing of the global experiences in preceptorship was systematized into two categories: intrinsic and extrinsic aspects for the exercise of preceptorship and educational strategies used by the preceptor. Conclusions: The analysis of the articles indicates the importance of the students’ actions together with preceptors for the acquisition of professional skills. A critical factor for the success of monitoring students in professional practice is the preceptor’s ability to assume the role of educator, in order to see the students in their uniqueness and in their integral development. Therefore, the significance of the preceptors’ qualifications becomes more evident.

Prevalence of binge drinking among medical students in Brazil: A systematic review and meta-analysis10.1590/1981-5271v46.1-20210440.ING2024-03-08T20:29:20.585000Z2020-08-09T06:49:02.967000ZNascimento, Maria Isabel doCosta, Juliana dos SantosAndrade, Carlos Augusto Ferreira de

Abstract: Introduction: Binge drinking consists of an alcohol consumption pattern that is dangerous for the drinkers and for society. Undergraduate medical students are often exposed to stressful situations, increasing the propensity for psychoactive substance use including excessive alcohol consumption. Objective: The aim of this study was to develop a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the pooled prevalence of binge drinking practiced by Brazilian medical students. Methods: The search was performed in a standardized way, involving two researchers, and by consulting the PubMed/Medline, SciELO and LILACS databases. A meta-analysis was carried out to estimate the pooled prevalence of binge drinking and 95% Confidence Intervals (95% CI). Results: We identified 206 records and included 14 studies in the review. The combined prevalence was estimated by the random effect method. Despite the substantial heterogeneity among the studies, the pooled analysis indicated that binge drinking is practiced by 47% of medical students as a whole, in Brazil (95% CI: 38%; 57%), and by 65% (95% CI: 50%; 78%) and 47% (95% CI: 34% to 59%), considering men and women, respectively. Conclusion: Binge drinking is practiced by almost half of the contingent of our future doctors. These results provide insights as to the choices and decisions that these students make regarding the consumption of potentially dangerous substances for the human health. Despite the high heterogeneity, the magnitude of the binge-drinking problem estimated in this meta-analysis demands an effective involvement of medical schools in Brazil.Caring for caregivers: encouraging intervention activities as a learning strategy in medical internship10.1590/1981-5271v46.1-20210218.ING2024-03-08T20:29:20.585000Z2020-08-09T06:49:02.967000ZGomes, Ana Vitória Teixeira de MedeirosFlorentino, Erika Denise de VasconcelosOliveira, Myrlla Soares deSilva, Thaiany RegoSouza, Jucimara Alves de

Abstract: Introduction: This work describes the experience of structuring a therapeutic group with informal caregivers who showed signs of overload and who worked providing care to bedridden people followed through home visits by the health team of the Family Health Strategy (FHS). Experience Report: The group was structured and developed by two students of the Internship period of the medical course during the rotation in Family and Community Medicine (FCM) together with the second-year resident physician of the Specialization Program in FCM, the preceptor of the Program, and the team nurse at the Josefa de Souza Silva school unit, Pedra Linda neighborhood, in Petrolina, state of Pernambuco, based on the identification of a problem in the community and as part of the intervention project. Discussion: Seven weekly meetings were held with twelve caregivers, from May to July 2019. Each meeting was divided into welcoming activities, presentation of the day’s proposal with the experience of a self-care practice and ended with the suggestion of a home activity, to be developed until the next meeting. For the development of activities, the community approach and resources such as Popular Education and Integrative and Complementary Practices in Health were used. Conclusion: The reduction of stress and overload on caregivers was observed, from the practice of self-care and the strengthening of support networks in the community. At the same time, the potential of the intervention project was perceived as a learning strategy in the process of medical training in the FHS: the students were able to experience the establishment of the doctor-patient relationship, the use of light technologies for care, the coordination of a therapeutic group, understanding the meaning of equity, integrality and longitudinality in the practice of FCM, recognizing themselves as caregivers and the importance of taking care of themselves to take care of others.“Count on Me” Project: tackling violence against women at university games10.1590/1981-5271v46.1-20210146.ING2024-03-08T20:29:20.585000Z2020-08-09T06:49:02.967000ZPereira, Ana Laura de QueirózSottomaior, Carla Larissa CunhaBatista, Raquel AzizBatista, Sara Torres y MorenoRubim, Renata Orlandi

Abstract: Introduction: The university is an instrument of social change, capable of bringing new thoughts and critical analyses to the community. With the expansion of the feminist movement in Brazil, the discussion about gender relations has increased, with demands for symmetrical relations, juxtaposing university spaces to such demands. In this context, in the university games between medical schools (Intermed), violence against women has become evident, with the need for a center able to provide protection to students and promote changes in the accomplishment of such events. Based on this reality, the idea of the “Count on Me” project has emerged. Experience report: At the organization of “Intermed” 2017, a group of women proposed to construct an environment where the participants could find safeguard in an oppressor context. A support tent was created, in which complaints of transgressions that occurred during the event would be heard. To optimize the approach to specific complaints, training was carried out together with the Special Police Force for Women’s Assistance for the project volunteers, in addition to the creation of a network of which function during the event was: to provide an emergency care shift in the tent; Minute Book for the recording of complaints and ornaments to identify the volunteers. In 2018, the participants of “Count on Me” project helped in the drafting of the statute that regulates the organization of “Intermed”, assigning punishments to some types of violence. Additionally, this document formalized the requirement for a physical space for the project in all editions. Discussion: In a few years, the “Count on Me” project established itself as an apparatus for the safety and well-being of the female participants. As violence against women is a public health problem, this innovative measure showed to be effective in confronting sexism. Conclusion: Even though the implementation of “Count on Me” project can be considered a success, multiple efforts are still necessary to make the university environment a fair one for all students, which depends on the volunteers’ engagement with frequent trainings, the education of male students regarding the cause, to the coordination of Medical Schools that have the obligation to provide the best possible environment for all students.Singular Therapeutic Project in the management of complex cases: experience report in PEW-Health Interprofessionality10.1590/1981-5271v46.1-20210260.ING2024-03-08T20:29:20.585000Z2020-08-09T06:49:02.967000ZFerreira, Maynara GuaripunaFerreira, Kathleen Hanna GonçalvesSouza, Cibelle Regina Piani deOrtiz, Priscila Cherley de AraújoAlmeida, Rodrigo Guimarães dos SantosSilva, Adélia Delfina da Motta

Abstract: Introduction: The Program Education through Work for Health (PEW-Health) was created in 2008 as a partnership between the Ministries of Health and Education, promoting the teaching-service-management-community integration, providing opportunities for professionals, students, teachers, and service users, in line with the needs of SUS, and having the topic of interprofessionality for its ninth edition (2019-2021). This report aims to share interprofessional learning based on the experience of a singular therapeutic project (STP) for a complex case within the PEW-Health activities of a university in the Midwest region, carried out in a Family Health Unit (FHU) in the municipality of Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul (MS). Experience report: Students from a tutorial group of PEW-Health Interprofessionality participated in this experience, as well as preceptors, professionals from the Extended Nucleus of Family Health and Primary Care (ENFH-PC), and a tutor, who was a teacher in a Medical School. The STP was developed with an elderly patient with polypharmacy and the following chronic conditions: diabetes mellitus (DM), depression (DEP) and systemic arterial hypertension (SAH), monitored during the period from August 2019 to February 2020, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, in a FHU in Campo Grande-MS, selected by the team due to the complexity of the case. Discussion: Through the STP, the group had the opportunity to evaluate, assist and perform practices to strengthen the patient’s “happiness project”. The STP allows team-patient intersubjectivity, focusing not only on the diseases, but on who they are. The carried-out home visits provided moments of listening for the performance of care in accordance with the needs, perceived and not perceived by the user. In the practice of STP, comprehensive care is provided, focused on the individual, showing the potential in continuing education and interprofessional teamwork, sharing knowledge, improving the sustainability of care and, consequently, qualifying health care, corroborating the results obtained in this study. Conclusion: Participation in the program allowed experiences that were previously absent during undergraduate school, such as contact with different health courses, practice in real SUS scenarios and application of concepts seen only in theory, such as humanized care and a comprehensive view, as well as communication with the team and the patient.

Therapeutic itineraries in medical education: a device for teaching Public Health in times of pandemic10.1590/1981-5271v46.1-20210159.ING2024-03-08T20:29:20.585000Z2020-08-09T06:49:02.967000ZPossa, Lisiane BôerMeneguelli, Diogo HenriqueCosta, Fernanda Coloniese DalaRighi, Liane BeatrizHeinzelmann, Ricardo Souza

Abstract: Introduction: The implementation of innovative pedagogical strategies in medical training is the discipline of this experience report. It aims to present the systematization of Therapeutic Itineraries (TI) and the production of Singular Therapeutic Projects (STP) for users of the Brazilian Unified Health System as a learning tool for the teaching of Public Health. Experience report: created based on the experience of teachers and monitors involved with this training in the undergraduate Medical School of Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, between the years 2017 and 2019. The TIs were initially considered from a perspective restricted to the description and analysis of the organization of the health care network (HCN), the access and flows in the services. Based on the debates, contents and production of the STPs, the TIs were revisited in order to contribute to students’ understanding of the relationship between the broader social structure and the individuality of people, their needs and the health care processes. Discussion: The experience, as proposed in its formulation, allowed the articulation of theoretical and practical fields and was a tool that articulated the different programmatic contents proposed in the Discipline of Public Health II. It has also become a viable pedagogical strategy in the real circumstances of offering the discipline, in a context in which Public Health can be more present in professional training. Conclusion: The action-reflection-action process allowed, at first, to recognize the Health Care Network, a structural component of the system. Based on the construction of the STP and the debate on the lines of comprehensive care, it was possible to qualify the analysis. The systematization of TI is a theoretical-methodological approach consolidated in health research and was a tool that showed to be effective for the teaching of Public Health and for learning about the practices and reconfiguration of the work of teachers and monitors on the discipline and, therefore, a permanent education strategy for both students and those responsible for their training.Curriculum integration in the formative assessment of distance continuing medical education: the use of integrative activities10.1590/1981-5271v46.1-20210176.ING2024-03-08T20:29:20.585000Z2020-08-09T06:49:02.967000ZWander, BrendaFernandes, Alessandra Tavares FranciscoDaudt, Carmen Vera GiacobboGomes, Marta QuintanilhaPinto, Maria Eugênia Bresolin

Abstract Introduction: The article describes the development and implementation of integrative activities as a formative evaluation of a distance-learning course of preceptorship specialization in Family and Community Medicine and discusses how the use of this activity is capable of integrating and assessing different knowledges, practices and performance of students in this modality of education. The course curriculum involves units with modules in three areas: family and community medicine, preceptorship and clinical practice, allowing the approach of essential topics for the practice of the specialty preceptor, which go beyond the study of pedagogical aspects. Experience report: The student was encouraged to carry out a textual production based on contextualized problems in the Primary Health Care preceptorship, guided by the tutor, aiming to critically reflect on the contents of each teaching unit. Illustrated situations were used in the activity statement, shown in comic strip format, which qualified the interpretation of the context addressed in the activity and promoted greater approximation with the reality experienced by the student. The contextualization of the activity and the exercise of putting oneself in the preceptor’s place were considered positive points by the tutors. Discussion: The student-tutor interaction is a fundamental part of the activity, as it allows the construction of knowledge from an interactionist perspective of education, which is the basis of the pedagogical proposal of the course. The activity allowed the identification of gaps and potentialities in the students’ learning and the implementation of particular pedagogical interventions. Conclusions: This type of activity ensures important dimensions of evaluative work in long-term courses: the procedural and interdisciplinary features. The integrative activity model can be used in distance courses with different disciplines, aiming at integrating them, providing a more in-depth approach and bringing the educational contents closer to the student’s reality.ERRATA EM: Revista Brasileira de Educação Médica, volume 45, número 110.1590/1981-5271v45.1-20200389.ERRATA2024-03-08T20:29:20.585000Z2020-08-09T06:49:02.967000Z
