Summary

The aim of this study was to evaluate the anti-malarial activity of Minocyclina since we were finding resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum in our area. We administered, intravenously, a total of 600 to 700 mg of this drug in 5 to 6 doses respectively at 12 hour intervals. Each dosage was dissolved in 200 ml of 5% glucose solution, applied at 2 ml per minute. This test was conducted over a 31 month period on a selected group from 534 patients in the Hospital de Molestias Tropicais (Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil) with falciparum malaria. Negative periferic asexual parasitemia occured maximally after seven days of treatment. The results of this work indicate that Minocyclina is effective in the treatment of falciparum malaria, even though its schizonticidal action is slow.
