Summary
A brief history of the taxonomy of the genus Victoria Lindl. is given. It is observed that the species still frequently referred to as Victoria regia Liindley should in fact be called Victoria amazonica (Poeppig) Sowerby. Although Sowerby made the new combination in 1850, the correct name is seldom used in South America. It is hoped that this paper will draw atention to the nomenclature and encourage the use of the name Victoria amazonica.
