This special edition of the Annals of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences puts together an important collection of papers, which reflect the discussions that took place in the Brazil/France Bilateral Symposium on Biodiversity, held in Manaus, in June 2018.
The symposium allowed a presentation of an integrated view of the studies on biological diversity conducted in Brazil, in France, and in other countries in Latin America (Val and Moura Neto 2019VAL AL AND MOURA NETO V. 2019. Biodiversity: Brazil-France Bilateral Symposium. An Acad Bras Cienc 91: e20190867. DOI 10.1590/0001-3765201920190867.). Although there was a closer look into the development of biology of the genes and of human and plant cells, important challenges to the future of natural regions around the world were pointed out, more specifically the future of our forests and oceans. The participants showed the breadth of their fascinating work and the preoccupation with raising questions in the field of biology.
In addition, the symposium has strengthened relationships between our countries and our scientific communities, not just in this particular field of research, but in science in general, and for sure it has been an opportunity for cultural interactions, which is an essential part of our fraternité.
We hope this symposium will launch a new chapter in the collaboration between French and Brazilian scientists, allowing our young students to interact and get trained on a deeper level. Scientific endeavors always profit from cooperative efforts among different countries. The Members of our Academies are surely eager to establish these alliances.
Thank you all for all the wonderful discussions and contributions, we will meet again.
