This special volume of the Annals of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (AABC) is the third and final one celebrating the fortieth anniversary of the Brazilian Antarctic Program (PROANTAR - Programa Antártico Brasileiro) in 2022. The first one was published in 2022 (Kellner 2022) and dedicated to the late Professor Antônio Carlos Rocha-Campos, who served as president of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) from 1994 to 1998 (Simões et al. 2022) and featured 52 scientific papers. The second volume, published in 2023 (Simões et al. 2023), contains 31 papers.
All three volumes are multidisciplinary, examining processes at the southern high latitudes and their global significance. This third volume includes articles covering a diverse range of topics in Atmospheric Sciences and Geosciences, including geophysical, glaciological, limnological, paleoclimatological, paleontological, pedological, and sedimentological research, as well as Life Sciences, which encompass biocontrol, biological oceanography, health surveillance, health and microbiological and ornithological studies. Collectively, these articles explore environmental changes over various time scales, utilizing a variety of methodologies and technologies, with an increasing reliance on satellite sensors and computational models.
Many of the findings presented in this third volume stem from the efforts of Brazilian scientists engaged in activities promoted by the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) of the International Science Council (ISC) and in collaboration with colleagues from various countries, mainly Argentina and Chile. Most of the research highlighted here was funded by the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI - Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação) through the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq - Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico) as part of PROANTAR’s initiatives. Additionally, the production of this volume also received financial support from the National Institute of Science and Technology of the Cryosphere (INCT da Criosfera).
The PROANTAR, managed by the Secretariat of the Interministerial Commission for the Resources of the Sea (SECIRM - Secretaria da Comissão Interministerial para os Recursos do Mar), owes much of its success to the ongoing logistical support of the Brazilian Navy (MB - Marinha do Brasil) and the Brazilian Air Force (FAB - Força Aérea Brasileira).
