Bryophytes from the Alcatrazes, Bom Abrigo, Casca, and Castilho islands of São Paulo State, Brazil

Collections of bryophytes amount to a total of 61 species. Chiloscyphus subviridis (Hook. f. & Taylor) J.J. Engel & R.M. Schust. and Lejeunea autoica R.M. Schust. are new records for Brazil. Lejeunea phyllobola Nees & Mont. ex Mont. is new for São Paulo State. A more diversified bryophyte flora was found in the largest islands covered by the Atlantic forest and the smallest number of taxa came from the smallest islands with vegetation covered by sparse trees of the Atlantic forest or sparse shrubs exposed to adverse conditions. Most of the taxa are restricted to certain islands. Alcatrazes is similar to Bom Abrigo in liverworts. Castilho is similar to this first group of islands in mosses. The most distinct bryoflora is found in Casca island. Rock and bark are the most available sites for bryophytes. Rock is the most available substrate for certain species in Alcatrazes and Castilho, and probaly the preferred places for these plants in Bom Abrigo and Casca.
