OBITUARY
Posthumous tribute to prof. Ruy Noronha de Miranda
I am glad to have met Prof. Miranda, who showed exemplary professionalism throughout the years. He stood out in the areas of teaching, research and medical practice in Paraná. I now have the opportunity to describe the brilliant dermatologist I knew for 50 years.
Born in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, on July 29, 1914, he was the son of Alcebiades Miranda and Paulina Noronha de Miranda. He attended the schools 'Delfim Moreira' and 'Colegio Militar', both in Rio de Janeiro, where he finished his elementary and secondary education. In 1938, he graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the Federal University of Paraná; in 1943, he received his Ph.D. and became a member of the Faculty of Tropical Medicine at the same university. He successfully became Professor of the Department of Dermatology and Syphilography at the Federal University of Paraná. As a researcher, he founded the Sousa Araujo Center for the Study of Leprosy at the Federal University of Paraná, where he published the Journal of the Center for the Study of Leprosy for 20 years, which divulged original work, such as the Mitsuda Phenomenon, the treatment of sporotrichosis by sporotrichin.
From 1960 to 1962, he was Professor of Dermatology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná. He was also a member of the Academy of Letters and Academy of Medicine of Paraná. He was Director of the Sao Roque Hospital, Head of the Division of Leprosy Prophylaxis, Vice-President of the Brazilian Medical Association, Regional Founder of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (Paraná), and President of the Brazilian Conference of Dermatology in 1968.
He created the Pro-Hansen foundation on July 18, 1990, and remained active until the date he passed away - May 27 of 2010 - at age 95.
He published a book about the Principles of Dermatology in 1972.
With his dedicated wife, Hesperia, he had a son, Ruy Paulo (In Memoriam), and a daughter, Zea Regina, who gave him many grandchildren.
He competently formed a team of highly qualified professors in the area of Dermatology. He was an extremely ethical and honorable human being, a humanitarian with a strong personality. He remained intellectually active until his last days - he published monthly articles in information media titled "The Mysteries of Life"
Professor Miranda left a legacy to the history of Dermatology in Paraná.
