We reached the end of another year. The Journal turns 26. A retrospective analysis points out the reason why it is a well-established and highly-regarded publication. The Journal follows a well-defined editorial policy and publication standards.

Standardizing is salutary1-3.

1. The Journal has a relevant scientific content in the field of Experimental Surgery. It is the only publication devoted to Experimental Surgery in Latin America. It has ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) – Print ISSN: 0102-8650; Online ISSN: 1678-2674. The Journal is an official organ of the Brazilian Society for the Development of Research in Surgery (SOBRADPEC).

2. The Journal is supported by the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) since 1987.

3. The Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Board Members are highly respected and renowned researchers in the field. The Editorial Board is composed by Brazilian and international members. Each article is reviewed by at least two referees.

7. Clear instructions for authors are available in Portuguese, English, and Spanish at www.scielo.br/acb.

8. It details the actual intellectual and scientific contribution of each author.

TheActa Cirúrgica Brasileira considers all those who have participated in the study to a significant extent to be authors. Authors are those who have made substantial scientific and intellectual contributions to the work.

The Journal identifies the primary author. The primary author is responsible for the integrity of the article as a whole and is not necessarily the first author. The primary author provides information on the contribution of each author listed on the manuscript submitted for publication.

9. Academic classification of each author

All authors are required to inform their highest academic degrees, current title and position, and institutional affiliation, including Division, Department and Institution.

Positions and titles have been standardized in English4.

The participation of graduate students in studies submitted for publication are welcome as long as they are enrolled in a Graduate Research Program and their intellectual and scientific contributions correspond to their expected educational level.

10. Abstracts are written in Portuguese and English.

11. Key words

The importance of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) descriptors is emphasized (http://decs.bvs.br). They are fundamental for searching and locating medical articles.

12. Ethics

Brazilian studies on laboratory animals should be approved by the Ethics Committee for Animal Use (CEUA), according to the Federal Law No. 11794 of October 8, 2008 (http://www.planalto.gov.br/ccivil_03/_Ato2007-2010/2008/Lei/L11794.htm) regulated by Federal Decree No. 6689 of July 15, 2009 (http://www.planalto.gov.br/ccivil_03/_Ato2007-2010/2009/Decreto/D6899.htm).
