The Acta Cirúrgica Brasileira journal is celebrating 18 years of existence in 2005. Up to 2001, it was a quarterly publication, and as of 2002 it became a bimonthly publication. It was indexed in LILACS in 1987, in SciELO in 1997 and in MEDLINE in 2005, and has become known as a journal whose main characteristic is to publish original manuscripts about experimental surgery [animal experimentation].

Figure 1 shows that Acta Cirúrgica Brasileira used to publish few articles on research involving human beings.

However, Acta Cirúrgica Brasileira was the journal with the most articles on research involving animal experimentation (Figure 2). This characterized the journal as the only one in Latin America in the field of Experimental Surgery.

The Editorial Board of our journal has now decided to accept not only research studies involving animal experimentation, but also clinical research studies, as long as they present something new and follow the basic principles of clinical research methodology.

The manuscripts submitted are initially assessed to check whether the bibliographic style [Vancouver] and the style of the journal [available from www.scielo.com.br/acb Instructions for authors] have been followed. They are then sent to the specialists responsible for each section. Each specialist will conduct a peer review, examine the English or Portuguese language, observe the use of current scientific terminology, and accept or reject the manuscript for publication.

Our mission is to ensure quality and excellence, and to enhance the impact of Acta Cirúrgica Brasileira.

Our prime objective is to be indexed in the ISI.
