    Ranzani, G.; Porta, A.

This paper describes an apparatus designed to carry on the continuous measurement of the water absorption by soils under laboratory conditions. The apparatus was called "sorbímetro". The principle accordingly to the "sorbimetro" works is the same which governs the flow of water in the usual linked flasks. The apparatus has a U tube whose vertical arms are connected respectivelly, to a soil colunn and to a 100 ml burete; the burete keeps constant the volume of water in the U tube since the liquid is being absorbed by the soil. In the present method the readings on the burete substitute for the usual weighings. The method is recommended for measurements in time intervals in which the gravimetric method does not work too well.
  • Sôbre a determinação do nitrogênio, do fósforo e do potássio no mesmo extrato

    Malavolta, E.; Arzolla, J. P.; Haag, H. P.

    Resumo em Inglês:

The determination of total nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in plant material can be carried out in a common extract prepared with sulphuric acid and 30 per cent hydrogen peroxide. Nitrogen is estimated by direct nesslerization of a suitable aliquot (1-5 ml of the 50 ml extract made out of 250 mg of dried material); in order to avoid excessive acidity, 10 ml of Nessler's reagent should be employed. An aliquot of 1-5 ml suffices for the colorimetric determination of phosphorus by the molybdenum method; to reduce the phosphomolybdate complex 2 ml of a 2% SnC12 soln are necessary. Potassium is determined by the cobaltinitrite method after elimination of ammonium salts with the aid of aqua-regia.

A new example of protoplasmic streaming occuring in the hairs attached to the inner wall and just above the anthers of corolla tube of Allamanda cathartica is described. There are five fascicles of hyalin and unicellular hairs, one for each stamen; they are united together, forming a conical protection over the anthers. The following procedure is recommended for microscopical examinations: it is necessary to remove most of the corolla as far as the level of the cone of hairs, and then the tube is divided in to five parts; under stereoscopic lupe, thin tube sections are obtained with a scalpel, lanceolated needle or razor blade, and the sections with a few hairs are mounted in water or liquid vaseline. In order to obtain good slides it is important to remove the air kept among the hairs with warm water, ten per cent ethyl alccohl or liquid vaseline. The only inconvenient presented by the use of liquid vaseline is some refringece around the hairs. The protoplasmic streamings are very active, but currents have not always the same course along the hairs; many time they change their directions and the cytoplasmic flows may be rapid or evenrushy in a protoplasmic strands. The bodies called "microsomes", which are suspended in the protoplasm, in most cases are carried along more or less rapidly by the currents. The observed movements belong to the gyratory, and ondulatory types.

    Gurgel, J. T. A.; Gomes, Frederico Pimentel; Trivelin, A. P.

    Resumo em Inglês:

The authors prove some approximate formulas for the computation of the mean and the standard error of quotients of two variates, correlated or uncorrelated, with not too high coefficient of variation. The formulas obtained are subsequently applied to some date on mensuration of horses of the Brazilian breed Mangalarga, by the eclectic system of LESBRE. The relsults obtained directly by the actual computation of the quotients as well as by means of the formulas with the aid of statistics of the numerators and the denominators are given in table 3, showing excellent agreement.
  • Nitrificação e aproveitamento de alguns adubos nitrogenados

    Malavolta, E.; Coury, T.; Arzolla, J. D. P.; Haag, H. P.; Brasil Sobrinho, M. O. C. do

    Resumo em Inglês:

The rate of nitrification of several nitrogenous fertilizers (ammonium sulfate, nitre-chalk, ureia, and cottonseed meal) was studied in three soils, namely, "terra roxa legítima", a red soil derived from basalt, "terra roxa misturada", a soil also derived from basalt but with a higher proportion of sand, and "areito Corumbataí", a sandy soil. The effects of the following treatments on nitrification were considered: addition of limestone of micronutrients (Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, and Mo), and inoculation with a suspension of spores of Aspergillus wentii, a heterotrophic nitrifier. The results showed that: in "terra roxa legítima" limestone had no influence on the nitrification rate, whereas the micronutrients estimulated the oxidation of nitre-chalk, cottonseed meal and urea; inoculation with A. wentii helped only the nitrification of ammonium sulfate and of the cottonseed meal; the latter, in all the treatments employed gave use to a smaller amount of nitrates; in "terra roxa misturada", all the fertilizers depending upon the treatments they were subjected to, presented maximum values for nitrification; limestone estimulated the oxidation of ammonium sulfate as well as the mineralization of the cottonseed meal; the addition of micronutrients helped the nitrification of all the fertilizers, except that of urea; inoculation showed a benefical influence on the nitrification of ammonium sulfate and cottonseed meal; in "arenito de Corumbatai", the amounts of nitrates produced was roughly the same for all the fertilizers investigated; limestone estimulated the nitrification of nitro-chalk, ammonium sulfate and cottonseed meal whilst the addition of micronutrients benefited only the latter two; the inoculation with A. wentii helped the oxidation of all the fertilizers. In order to study the availability of the various fertilizers above discussed, two plant growing experiments were carried cut, one in pots, using the three soil types and another one in the field, with "terra roxa misturada". In "arenito de Corumbatai" there was no significant difference in the yield both of straw and rice grains for none of the fertilizers: Chilean nitrate of soda was used as a control; ho marked agreement could be detected between the data concerning nitrification and the yield results. In "terra roxa legítima", ammonium sulfate won the competition and there was a good parallelism between nitrification and yield. In "terra roxa misturada", there was no statistical difference among the various fertilizers; the agreement between nitrification and yields was reasonable. In the field (corn), Chilean nitrate, ammonium sulfate and nitro-chalk were clearly beter than urea and cottonseed meal which did not differ from the minus nitrogen plots.

    Graner, E. A.

    Resumo em Inglês:

The results reported in this paper did not show statistical differences in production of seeds, number of plants and number of ears when corn fertilizer (combination of Chilean nitrate, superphosphate and potassium chloride) was applied either in the sowing furrow or in lateral furrows (one or both side). The treatments with fertilizer were better than the treatment without fertilizer used for comparisons. Cotton seed meal, used in combination with superphosphate and potassium chloride, placed in the sowing furrow, reduces statistically the number of plants in the row when compared with the treatments where applications were made only in lateral furrows. However, this reduction of plants did not affect significantly the number of ears and the production in the treatments.

  • Influência lunar sobre plantas hortícolas

    Simão, Salim

    Resumo em Inglês:

The aim of this paper is the study of moon effects on ten different crops divided in four groups: 1) salad and cole crops (lettuce, endive, cabbage, cauliflower); 2) root crops (beet, carrot, radish, turnip); 3) bulb crops (onion); 4) solanaceous fruits (eggplant). The design of the experiment was randomized blocks, with four replications, the different treatments being the four phases of the moon. The analyses of variance are given in the work of Simão (1953) and the analises of the mean in tables 1 to 2. The main conclusions are: 1) No difference in production were found related to different moon phases, even it the crops supposed to be sensible to moon effects. 2) In a few cases, where some increase in production was observed, such increase could be atributed by other apents 3) The agents supposed to interfere with increase in production were temperature and photoperiodism, rather than moon phases. 4) The most sensible crops to low temperature, during the night, were: lettuce, endive, cauliflower, cabbage, carrots, turnips and radish. 5) The most sensible crops to both low temperature and photoperiodism were: onion and beet. 6) The moon phases supposed to have opposed effects, namely full-moon and half-moon, gave mixed results sometimes both giving the best yield simultaneously and sometimes giving the poorest crops. 7) As a final conclusion, no moon effects could be detectable in the present experiment.

    Gomes, Frederico Pimentel

    Resumo em Inglês:

The author studies, with the aid of Mitscherlich's law, two experiments of sugar cane fertilization with vinasse. The first one, carried out in Piracicaba, State of S. Paulo, by ARRUDA, gave the following yields. No vinasse 47.0 tons/ha. 76.0 tons/ha. 250 c.m./ha. of vinasse 75.0 do. 112.0 do. 500 do. 90.0 do. 112.0 do. 1000 do. 98.0 do. 107.0 do. Data without NPK were appropriate for the fitting of the law, the equation of which was found to be: y = 100.8 [1 - 10 -0.00132 (x + 206) ], where y is measured in metric tons/hectare, and x in cubic meters/hectare. The optimum amount of vinasse to be used is given by the formula x* = 117.2 + 1 log w u , ______ ____ 0.00132 250 t being u the response to the standard dressing of 250 cubic meters/hectare of vinasse, w the price per ton of sugar cane, and t the price per cubic meter for the transportation of vinasse. In Pernambuco, a 3(4) NPK vinasse experiment gave the following mean yields: No vinasse 41.0 tons/hectare 250 cm./ha. of vinasse 108.3 do. 500 do. 134.3 do. The equation obtained was now y = 150.7 [1 - 10 -000165 (x + 84)], being the most profitable level of vinasse x* = 115.2 + 1 log w u , _______ ____ 0.00165 250 t One should notice the close agreement of the coefficients c (0.00132 in S. Paulo and 0.00165 in Pernambuco). Given the prices of Cr$ 20.00 per cubic meter for the transportation of vinasse (in trucks) and Cr$ 250.00 per ton of sugar cane (uncut, in the fields) the most profitable dressings are: 236 c.m./ha. of vinasse in S. Paulo, and 434 c.m./ha. in Pernambuco.
  • A new species of Pseudophyllid from Brazil (Orthoptera)

    Piza Jr., S. de Toledo
  • Nota sôbre o gênero Mononchus de nematódeos predadores

    Lordello, Luiz Gonzaga E.

    Resumo em Inglês:

Seven species of the nematode genus Mononchus Bastian, 1865, were found in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. Such are: M. subsimilis Cobb, 1917; M. ibitiensis Carvalho, 1951; M. piracicabae Lordello, 1953; M. risoceiae Carvalho, 1955; M. soutoi Carvalho, 1956; M. coronatus Carvalho, 1956; and M. jairi n. sp. Outside the State, the following species have been found: M. papillatus (Bastian, 1865) Cobb, 1916; M. monhystera Cobb, 1917; M. muscorum (Dujardin, 1845) Cobb, 1916; M. gymnolaimus (Cobb, 1893) Cobb, 1916; M. consimilis Cobb, 1917; M. trichurus Cobb, 1917; M. reversus Cobb, 1917; and M. dentatus Cobb, 1917 (LORDELLO, 1953). This field of investigation has scarcely been touched and additional collections will doubtless add new forms to the number of species known as yet. M. jairi n. sp. most closely resembling species is M. monhystera Cobb, 1917, from which it differs in having: a) labial region more expanded, set off from neck by a broad shallow depression; b) anterior portion of the pharynx-wall rather thinner and directed outward; and, c) smaller dimensions (788.0-924.0: 1,100.0 micros).

Each lot consisted of two pens of 45 White American chicks was raised in batteries for 6 weeks. From results of the analisis of variance the AA. concluded for the superiority of the ramie leaf meal (586,4 g) over the alfalfa hay meal (540,1 g) in the conditions of the experiment.

    Torres, Alcides Di Paravicini

    Resumo em Inglês:

In a feeding trial cassava root meal was used as a substitute for wheat bran and wheat middling (mixed) in several ranges: 10, 15, 20 and 30% of a ration. Five groups of 32 seven day old Rhode I. Red chicks were used during 6 weeks of the trial. The results are shown in the Tables (Quadros) I, II and III. Table I shows an high mortality in R4, receiving 30% of cassava root meal and no wheat by product. It was observed a depression of the development of the chicks that was so much high as the proportion of the cassava meal increased in the ration consumed. The A. suggests cassava root meal might have an antagonistic factor acting as a "toxic", that he imagine could be corrected by a higher vitaminic and mineral proportion. This hipothesis must be investigated.
  • Conservação do bambu

    Simão, Salim

    Resumo em Inglês:

This paper brings to light new data on the absence of influence of lunar phases on the preservation of bamboo sticks. The author cut down for one and a half years (from - June 18, 1947 to December 30,1948) bamboos in every phase of the moon. With part of the sticks obtained a fence was built; the rest v/as kept under shelter. In the fence there were: 5 whole sticks with no preservative, 5 whole sticks with thanalith, 5 halved sticks with no preservative, 5 halved sticks with thanalith, all buried 10 centimeters in the soil. An equal number of the same types and in the same fence were kept upright 10 centimeters above the soil. Under shelter, in a shed, there was another group of sticks, 10 of each of the same four types. After 5 1/2 years no damage was observed in the fence for any treatment or any phase of the moon. On the other hand, for those bamboos kept under shelter the following numbers of perforated sticks were observed. Number of perforated sticks after 5 1/2 years Without Thanalith Thanalith Date of cutting Phase of the moon Whole Halved Whole Halved 8 - 25 - 47 Prime 0 3 0 0 9 - 29 - 47 Full 0 3 0 0 10 - 7 - 47 Wane 0 3 0 0 10 - 14 - 47 New 2 4 0 0 10 - 29 - 47 Full 0 5 0 0 11 - 6 - 47 Wane 3 3 0 0 11 - 13 - 47 New 0 1 0 0 4 - 1 - 43 Wane 3 5 0 0 8 - 27 - 48 Wane 1 3 0 0 10 - 10 - 48 Prime 1 3 0 0 Totals 10 36 0 0 So, among the 400 sticks kept under shelter, after 5 1/2 years, only 46 were perforated, all among those withe no preservative. No influence of lunar phase at cutting down of sticks seems to be present.
