Mario Conde’s critical gaze: from disenchantment to heresy

Abstract:

This article explores the evolution of detective Mario Conde’s gaze throughout the eight neo-crime novels that he stars in, spanning two decades (1989-2009). Conde’s way of understanding and facing the reality that surrounds him is transformed as his knowledge of it increases and as the Cuban context itself changes. As I will try to explain, the protagonist’s gaze shifts from acceptance of revolutionary ideals to disenchantment faced with the reality of frustrated projects, and from this to heresy against all dogmatism.
