Modernité et sorcellerie: Baudelaire lecteur du XVIII E siècle

Whereas the modern world is characterized by the decline of religion and magic in the face of scientific progress and reason, the meaning Baudelaire gives to modernity is that of a magical operation. Without claiming to solve this paradox, the present article aims to elucidate it more thoroughly than has previously been done in comparing Baudelaire’s aesthetics to his readings of the eighteenth century.
