Cartographies of the margins: studies on the experimental production of argentine and brazilian cinemas

ABSTRACT

Between the late 1960s and the beginning of the next decade, several films produced by young filmmakers in Argentina and Brazil radicalized the rupture with the classic narrative style and with production and distribution structures, and were therefore called Underground Cinema (in Argentina) or Marginal Cinema (Brazil). Not seen by many when they were made, these films nevertheless motivated at least four comparative studies presented by different researchers in recent years. The perspective brought about by a comparative view of the historical contexts of the two countries allows these studies on films little known so far to shine a light on similar issues faced by contemporary film production in both countries.
