Abstract
“O autor de si mesmo” and “Mineirinho” are both chronicles written as reactions to newspaper reports about cases of extreme violence. Both are also texts published in the mainstream media of their time: Gazeta de Notícias, in the case of Machado de Assis, and the magazine Senhor, in the case of Clarice Lispector. This article seeks to analyze these texts in parallel, in order to investigate the modalities of reaction to the violence that they embody.
