PARTY LEADERS, POLITICAL CHANGE AND SOCIAL TRAJECTORIES: THE DESTINATIONS OF LEADERSHIPS OF THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY OF PARANÁ AFTER THE FALL OF THE EMPIRE (1890S)

Abstract

This article analyzes the political paths of leaders of the Conservative Party of the state of Paraná in the years following the fall of the Empire. This analysis shows three arguments. The first argument claims that the leaders of the Conservative Party of Paraná were politically split at the time of the establishment of the Republic; the change of political regime occurred in a moment of internal instability the party. The second recognizes that the conservatives that belonged to the last board of the association remained as allies in the years after 1889. The alliance with the historic republicans was crucial in gaining prominent positions in the political institutions and the new parties. The third argument states that dissenting conservatives did not hold together in the First Republic. The trajectories of this group of coreligionists were marked by low electoral competitiveness and short-term affiliation with minority parties of the state.
